The Lexus That The Dealership Couldn't Fix is Finished! I'm Sad and Happy at The Same Time

- We discussed the story of this 1994 Lexus ES300 that the dealership and a few other shops couldn't fix. Now it's the day before delivery back to the owner as the car is 100% fixed and it's making me a bit sad.
This car has been in the shop for close to 4 months and through all the work we put into getting back to running well I truly have grown fond of it and while i'm happy that it's going back to it's owners who are very happy and excited to get it back and running well, I will miss it dearly because it's truly a special car in exceptional shape.

take care of that car. make sure you do maintenance when needed and change the oil on time. it will last you 6 times the miles on it right now.

Love how you said you wouldn't give name of the manufacturer of the aftermarket idle air controller, but flashed the name three times(7:47)in upper left hand corner. Priceless.
Our shop just serviced a 2005 Chevy Avalanche. Vehicle owner installed an aftermarket MAF from Orielly 6 times over a period of a year. We chose the GM OEM part and that solved his problems. You’re only saving money for the pain medication you’ll be taking for using that cheaply priced/manufactured part. Listen to AMD, he’s taking the time to educate his followers. 👍🏼

It’s only running now because AMD took the time and is skilled enough to keep it running.
At 12:50 it’s suprised me that the trunk lid did not go down to bumper level, considering the original (Camry based) ES250 had the trunk lid go down to the bumper level.

Love seeing a fellow technician dedicate themselves to a car. Even if it isn’t his or hers very own. Taking pride in your work is sooo important in this field. The absolute BEST car I ever owned was my wife's 1995 Lexus es300. "WOW" what a car. She bought it from a used car dealership with 90k on it. I was very skeptical at first and advertised against the purchase; However, after a brief test drive and a pretest smog check (I live in California). We decided to buy it. I still recall every morning hearing her start it up and drive off to work. Well this went on for year after year after year....I often recall saying to myself "Wow, is that car ever going to break down". Well, year after year turned into 12 years and 110 thousand miles later...I kid you not.. Absolutely NOTHING BROKE..All the maintenance I did myself. One brake job, oil changes, one Axel, air filter, tires and coolant flush. I eventually sold the car to my friend and he finally changed the timing belt. I later learned the car was destroyed in an accident.
Thats fantastic! “Nothing is unfixable” is so true. I can imagine many nights you lay in bed running thing’s possible through your head.
he technically lucked out finding out new in box MAF. That said, he could try to search for a used one from a wrecker.
My mechanic's version of this is "I can do anything you want if you have the time and the money" (usually in relation to proposed performance mods) . Dealerships are not the place for other than routine services.
It would have been unfixable if he had not been able to find those vital parts.

Well the original parts became defective after 75k miles, so probably not.

I admire you and your conviction. This mechanical resurection video is also posted on Easter Sunday. What a coincidence ....or perhaps a purposeful act. God bless a mechanic like you. Fact is cars have become overly complicated. This happened as a result of pursuit of fuel efficiency. There are now too many parts, too many complicated mechanisms and diagnosis and repair can frequently be a nightmare or nearly impossible. Thanks for saving this beauty. Mid 1990s Lexus ES300 can still be seen quite often on the highways in California and Nevada where I live.
Exact same car I owned when I was 19 years old. I paid $19k for a 2 year old Coach Edition straight from a Lexus dealership. Best car I ever owned, by far!

Needs a whole timing belt job, new transmission speed sensor, new brake booster, new valve cover gaskets.
After that I should be good for 10 more years.

I have a '93 Chevy Camaro Z28 that spent almost seven months at an "old-school" mechanic shop that was determined to fix a backfiring issue. I originally took it into a local shop near me to do a tune-up since it had a slight idle and hesitation problem. After replacing the spark plugs and wires with brand new ACDelco ones, it didn't fix the issue. Then they literally replaced every ignition and fuel system parts with new GM/ACDelco parts, except for the fuel pump and the optispark distributor, which were both discontinued. The optispark was replaced with an ACDelco remanufactured one, and the fuel pump was replaced with a new Delphi aftermarket. The idle and hesitation went away, but then the car began backfiring when you apply half throttle to wide open throttle. At this point I already sunk a butt-load of money into the car. I took it to another mechanic I knew, who recommended that I take it to an old-school Ford/Chevy mechanic that he knew in a small podunk town about 50 miles away from me. I told the guy, that there was no rush, and the mechanic originally spent about three weeks working on it on/off, and finally concluded that it was a bad fuel pump and replaced it with a Carquest Premium pump. Not five miles down the road, after picking the car up from the shop, the car was still backfiring, so I immediately turned around and dropped it back off. I told the mechanic to take his time and for the next six months, the guy worked on/off on it. Any test you can think of, compression test, leakdown test, fuel pressure test, etc., he performed it. At that point, we kind of narrowed it down to one thing. The remanned optispark. Unlike other traditional distributor cap and rotors, the optispark distributor is non-adjustable for timing. We didn't originally want to delve into it since one, it was already replaced, and two, the thing is a pain in the ass to get to, since you have to remove the radiator fan shroud, the water pump, the drive belt, and the harmonic balancer, just to get to optispark. I mean it was already replaced with a part remanufactured by ACDelco, why shouldn't it work? We finally decided to replace it with a new Summit Racing aftermarket optispark, and lo and behold, the backfiring went away. It goes to show you that even first-party remanned parts are bad out of the box, just as much as you can get a bad brand new part. But the mechanic was pretty determined to find out and fix what was wrong, and even though his shop is 50 miles away, he gained a repeat customer because of that.

There isn't anything that likes aftermarket parts. ALL aftermarket parts for ALL makes for ALL brands are to be avoided at all costs

I wish I could take my cars to your shop. This video really demonstrates your passion for Toyota/Lexus. I used to have a 87 Celica GT Liftback that most shops wouldn’t give the time of day. Despite it having less than 100k miles (I got it with 54k miles in 2009) and being extremely clean. Thank you for all that you do.

Jimmy and daisy dog mobile mechanic here! Just. Fixed a 300 es lexus for a neighbor. RTs ate up 11 wires and a multitude of issues. Fixed up for him and he's so happy! Rebuilt his fuel injectors,new intak manifold gaskets,tranny service coolant system, charging system rewired ,tons of maintenance issues,made it like new.hes so happy.takes a brain old school and dedication.love your videos God bless

I love the old Lexus. I sold a 1995 SC300 last year with 203k miles. It idled and ran like new. Very little maintenance needed. Great car.

My dad had a 1993 since new (same one, same colors, only rims were the trident OEMs ones, dual pipe exhaust, a beauty, a symphony), one of my best childhood memories were with that car. Then I bought 1998 ES300 champagne grey on top, dark gray bottom, everything as the 1993 one but improved, the platinum edition with AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension) which I kept until 2018 (Yeap my sweetheart, for 20 years), now with a 2019 Highlander... But his highlander XLE is almost like having a high ES with AWD, power, reliability, comfort, ready for another 20 years. Great videos Car Care Nut Channel, love your honest, responsible and deep focusing tutorials. Share same passion with you. Great video, thanks for your dedication. I had a 2001 ES 300 in this color combination which I drove for 12 years. I now have a LS 430 along with 2 RX 350s. Great reliable cars.
Nice. I had a 93. I bought it used and abused. It drove great. It did have an oil leak. Passenger power windows became a problem. Head gasket was now an issue. And it ended up at the graveyard. I can imagine a good running car will give comfort and appreciation…

I remember the company president had this same car. I always admired it when I'd walk pass it in the parking garage. Not a huge fan of two-tone paint jobs, but there's something about this Lexus that works. Good job saving it!

I completely understand you when you look with so much love at the cars that cross the threshold of your service. Today I went for a drive with my 2007 Avensis and I was looking at her and actually I couldn't part with it because it brings me so much joy and beautiful moments. Show us the Supra project, otherwise I'm looking forward to the next video.
As a technician in another life, now a driveway mechanic, parts availability for these older cars has become a real issue. Things like a simple IAC valve, would never imagine would be an issue to find. Even things as simple as a windshield are getting hard to find sometimes, and these are things I never imagined would happen with my vehicles 20 years ago. I horde parts, especially when they come on clearance and are a good name part, especially if it is an OEM maker of the part. Just in case.
Parts are getting way more expensive, my 1996 Camry with the 2.2 needs new oil pump gasket and seal, I figured while I was in there, I would do the timing belt, water pump, crankshaft, camshaft seal, and thermostat. $200 Canadian for the seals (cranksaft seal on back order). Dealer wanted $100.00 for oem thermostat. Sourced that one out of the states for $50.00 including shipping. Ordered timing belt kit from Amazon was good deal for under $200.00. TKT-200 kit
ITs an antique approaching 30 years old. It's the same as working on something in 1994 that was manufactured in the 60's. 15 or so years on a car, then the parts start to drop off as the cars on the road start to drop off.

Nice job! So so wonderful to see somebody that really cares about the end result and how nice that you had a customer that was willing to trust you to let you keep working on it until you got it right. My 96 Tacoma probably has some similar Engineering in it. I take very good care of it but I made that same mistake by buying a third-party idle air control… threw it away and replaced it with the Toyota one. this was a few years ago and judging by your experience it looks like I might not be able to Get a good replacement if it goes out again.
The topside creeper is what I was saying you needed early on. I use it for working on my land cruiser and tundra and it saves my back big time.
This was a great episode - really unhelpful for my tendency to keep cars way too long, but wow what a car that 300 is! Has to be really satisfying to get it all set back up. A whole bunch of us wish we owned that car! Ahmed, I feel the about the color of the Lexus ( which is the focus of this video) with pure love, in the same exact way that you feel about the large SUV color you spoke about. It's such a classy looking 2 tone with that silvery bottom color under the off white upper. They had the same paint combo available on Camry's of that time period, and they were very popular here in RI and Ma. I almost bought a 2000 Camry in that color, but I detested how the used car dealer treated me, and never found another.

My first day working at Lexus of Kedron in Brisbane back in 1993 , I was 22 yrs old and they gave me a brand new ES300 as I was doing customer service pick up, I was crapping myself as OMG ,I drove this for a few months as we changed them over every 5000klms , it was a privilege .

I used junk yard parts to replace a 91 truck MAF sensor. $1000 at dealer and $100 at junk yard …. Worked great.
Once again a beautiful story with a very happy ending. Wow that car was 30 years old and looks beautiful. The year my niece was born and now she is a dentist. Brings back a flood of happy memories and how fast time goes by.

I think it would make sense for you to work on finding a good local detailer that you send your cars to so that they can do a fantastic job and you can extend the video progress to see the actual truly finished product and to help the detailer grow their business in a nice synergy of sharing and helping. AMD I think you need to contemplate a shop extension and a few more lift and one or two more high quality certified mechanics to help really get your business to the next level.

My Ex GF father had one of those ES300-s. He was a doctor, I remember I used to see a lot of these with professional folks driving it as a commuter. That car is super comfortable and quiet! And got plenty of power too!
It speaks volumes about the automotive industry when the 1994 ES300 still runs perfectly without leaks, requiring only minor repairs while the 2017 RX350 has the engine out for repairs. Long live the 90s Japanese products!

Before I bought it, I knew very little about Lexus and Toyota, but it’s a beautiful car and I found your channel right after I bought it and was very happy to see it’s a classic!
