when I was in highschool, my girlfriend asked me to change the oil on her Camry. Easy enough.... too bad I drained the trans fluid rather than the oil. Luckily I noticed it was red and was able to solve things before I bricked the car!
Tightening up alloy inlet manifold with 1/2 circle spacer behind it breaking the manifold lug. Good to see you got to the bottom of it with a simple fix, every day is a school day. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2021👍

Spending 4 hours years ago putting a new clutch in a MK1 Cortina. Finished the job proud a hell then noticed a C clip laying on the floor,. After scratching my head for an hour wondering what it was and a phone call to my mate I discovered it was the C Clip off the clutch plate. I had to spend another 3 hours disassembling it to put it back. I will never forget that.

Liking your channel, good job - I have 2 1980s mini van related mistakes - fitted a LCB manifold but there was no hole in the three bolt flange gasket - how did we not see that the hole was not there when we joined it up ? ! ! ! (it would not start and took us days to sort) on another day my girlfriend was baby sitting at her brothers on a posh housing estate, block paving road in the cul-de-sac, you know how it is, as I was leaving in the early hours I backed off the drive a bit sharp and got to full lock with a bit of a bang - a lower ball joint snapped, the wheel folded out and it pulled the drive shaft out, there was oil running down the road ! - hell of a job to get it back on the drive - was scrubbing the street with a broom the next day ! - but at least I had got to stop over !
Absolutely love your van mate great colour! I've got a 1979 mini van in white that I'm just restoring it has the factory fitted rear bench seat so it's a derived van.
Rear bench seats are rare!!
It's so frustrating when these little errors keep you head-scratching. A few years ago I rebuilt a 1978 Piaggio Ciao moped - full strip down, respray and engine rebuild. I got the engine started without much trouble and it seemed to run well until I hit a bumpy patch in the road - that's when the engine sputtered, lost power and sometimes gave up completely. It took me weeks to work out that I'd forgotten to replace the O-ring on the carb's float chamber 🤦🏻♂️

Everyone is living and learning, so pleased the problem was easy to sort.
I once tried deleting the EGR on my ECU. My car never did run again. In fact it's still on my driveway!
We can wait a couple of months to see the van on the road, I wouldn't want to take it out in the damp and salt either Alex.

My stupidest car mistake? When I was 17 I had my first car (a Mini, very rare in the US) and after a while it would barely crank to start. I decided it was a bad battery so I went and purchased a new battery. That seemed to sort of fix it for a couple of days and then the problem returned. So I was convinced that the generator (dynamo) must not be charging the new battery so I pulled the generator out and cleaned it all up and put in new brushes. But that didn’t fix the problem. More head scratching and then I finally determined it was a bad starter that was pulling too many amps. So instead of diagnosing the problem correctly I ended up buying a battery I didn’t need and then rebuilding a generator I didn’t need to. All because I was 17 and I thought I knew what I was doing.
We knew everything when we were all 17 😂
Tried starting my lotus elan plus 2 with the tachometer not wired in, needless to say it needs to be! The ol’ man sorted me out but I felt like a right Wally!

My dumbest mistake (possibly): I took our 90 Mini on the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2019. A week long trip of 2500 miles over multiple US states accompanied by thousands of high horsepower cars. The Mini ran like a champ and folks loved seeing it. At the end of the event I had to drive from Norwalk, Ohio to Atlanta, Georgia (another 685 miles) to get home. About half way it started missing. After some trouble shooting I convinced myself that it was a fuel pump. I got it to a friend’s house about midway and left it there. A week later I got it home and started working on it. After finish all the fuel system stuff I did a run through the car and found the clamp on the distributor loose. There is a good chance that the fuel pump was ok, but the issues were caused by it being badly out of timing. If I would of kept my head, and known a bit more about the car, there is a chance I could of sorted that out.

I was jet washing an old Porsche 924 just before a potential buyer turned up - (it was an old banger at the time worth at £1200). As I jet washed the front valance, all the white top coat came off and left a big grey patch on the car. Luckily a quick trip down to Halfords for a tin of touch up and a quick respray in the car park and all was well! :-)

Daftest thing I ever did was on a BMW Cooper S - I topped the water up cos I had a slow leak but forgot to put the screw cap back on the expansion tank. Boiled it self to buggery in about 5 miles. Very hot run home begging water whenever I could.

Mine was also on a Mini - my first car, a 1972 Clubman. I had checked the oil on the dipstick with a rag before heading off to Portsmouth Polytechnic. Halfway down the A3, there was a bang from under the bonnet, I lost power, and the car came to a stop, thankfully I coasted to a layby. In the dark, I had left the rag on the rocker cover, it has slipped off and got caught by the cooling fan, which whipped it round, severing the fuel line. I lost a full tank of fuel (£10 worth!!) on the A3.
A tank of fuel for 10 quid! I wish that was the case now!
I just watched the episode of Bangers & Cash (Series 1, Episode 1) where the 1965 Mini Cooper S went for 18,000. 😉

Yeah i saw that! Absolutely crazy money considering the car was getting a heritage shell. For me the cars gone when you do that but its not frowned upon because its a new shell

Have a Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year! My late Dad’s mini van played up after he put a new fuel tank in it, turned out it was the fuel cap caused the new tank to air lock! Solution soaked the cap in fuel for a day or two, the breather hole had gummed up! The old tank had a hole on the top section so the air locking never presented itself!

I'd been working on my Midget doing a bit of electrical work and had switched the ignition on to test a circuit (pull starter so it's turn power on before starting and I didn't need to start it). Anyway I got called away and forgot to turn off. Upon return fried coil leaking wax and oil. Not made that mistake again 🤣

This was a good one, about 1970 bought an old 1100 power unit. Completely rebuilt it, a lot of new stuff. Engine/ gearbox was complete ready to go in the car. Had a clear up, found one new big end shell in the packet that they came in! Disaster, must have used one old shells when building engine. Took engine off gearbox, undid first big end bearing, 2 new shells in there, undid second big end, 2 new shells, sod's law it's going to the last one! Undid third big end, 2 new shells in there, undid last big end, guess what! 2 new shells in there as well! I did curse, must have been an extra shell in the packet! Still, the Engine 1098, 12G295 head, duplex timing gears, 1 1/2"SU, was (is) a good one, was in the car for more than 25 years of hard use, upgraded ? to a 1275 that didn't really provide anything more. 1098 engine is still fine.
Breaking down, thinking it was the carb... Got a replacement from the scrapyard. Still wouldn't run. Turned out the screws for the points weren't tight enough... Always check the small things first.

You could run an inline valve under the dash off the overflow and make a nice cheap immobiliser...
Don’t beat yourself up mate, easy mistake. I was selling a car many years ago and wanted to pull a few toys off it and left a earth connection loose so each time I turned headlamps on engine stopped, felt a right plum when breakdown bloke came out. I know exactly how you feel about not wanting to take those motors out in the salt, I have a 26 year old 4x4 that’s in mint condition and hate the idea of taking that out in the salt.

Had a similar issue with my s in the summer, one minute it would start ,the next it would not, tried everything like yourself, turned out the condenser was breaking down

Most stupid mistake I’ve made- nudged the brake pedal when installing some parts on the interior, brake fluid flew out of the master cylinder and sprayed onto the Mini’s freshly painted door left at the side of the workshop. Full respray needed, nightmare! Don’t panic mate, everything can be sorted and these things happen

Mk1 mini fuel pump on subframe played up in the middle of nowhere,decided to hit it with the wheel brace and smashed the plastic fuel banjos....bad times......Have a good christmas

Back in the early 80s I Was to tight to buy a new head gasket for a Hillman imp so I used Isopon ( filler ) to stick it on 🤣 but it did work for a while anyway I bet no one ever took that head off again lol

We have all been a numpty. Years ago, pre google, I pulled all the plug leads off a metro, without noting the order, duh, luckily my dad had an old mini Haynes manual in his garage, followed that order and it started ok. Also years ago, I disconnected the battery on a Sierra, once reconnected it would not start, called breakdown, who found I had missed a small earth lead off.
Its all part of the fun being a numpty 🤣 i have very little idea with electrics earths are one of them!
Changing the oil filter and leaving the old O ring in the housing, wondering why i had oil squirting all over the engine bay. Merry Xmas from South Australia, and stay safe. Hope New Year is better for you guys in the UK.

(Stupid mistakes) had a great 850 mini in the seventies as my first car...me and my mate Dave had just finished fitting a scrapped MG1100 engine to it which was brilliant. Decided to replace my old damaged multi blade fan with a really nice yellow four blade metal fan from a scrapped moggie. Got all the way (20 miles) to a Sunday Brands Hatch race day and the darn thing cooked in the entry que.....I hadn’t given it a thought when I put it on but of course a moggie radiator fan sucks, and a mini one blows! I felt like a right idiot, all my mini gang mates dined out on it for weeks ha ha! Happy days 🎅🏼🇬🇧👍

Checked plugs all easy practical things.
Called out breakdown and I looked a right dick. The fuel gauge was faulty and I had no fuel lol.
Didn't think to check I had fuel at filter Carb!!

Hi Alex. Would never have thought of that one ! I guessed you'd pulled off a coil wire. Am l right in thinking you don't fit the hubcaps because you don't want to damage the paint when taking off the caps ? Why not use a plastic door card trim remover ? Just a thought . Hope l' m not being nosey but what is your job ? I.T ? Well, have a peaceful and healthy Christmas and lets hope next year brings us back to something like normal. Take care and stay safe.

I once had issues with mine and changed the starter solenoid and it still wouldn’t start but my mate said put a spanner over the terminals on it and we we did this it would crank. I was well confused and turns out i had the terminals the wrong way round on it. 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️

Mine was failure to see the issue that stared me in the face, Van started to resist acceleration, generally up a gradient, was told it may be exhaust....my thinking too deep, had it in garage, he’d everything tested, couldn’t find it so took it home in desperation, thought would just swap exhaust as I have a spare.....yup...it was exhaust...doh! If only I had listened to advice in first place! The cat inside had come loose and when going up a gradient it tilted and caused a restriction, downhill and on flat it tilted back and was fine!....you are nor alone 😉

when i bought my old 2005 polo 9n3 1.2 6v
i found out it had a overheating problem as the fan didn't kit in i looked at the Haynes manuel checked the fuses in the fuse box they where fine, tested the switch it was fine so thought it was the fan at fault, to replace the fan means you've got to replace the radiator as its a 1 piece deal, so new one fitted still didnt work, then went online and found out there is 4 fuses that are hidden on top of the battery and not mentioned in the Haynes so went too them and low and behold the fuse to the fan had blown, changed it out and it worked fine, felt like a right idiot after that
Changing radiators is a pain! Certainly on a mini!
Has it got standard points and plugs? If it has have you changed the points as the little capacitor sometimes go pop

@@classicminidetails8887 it was the only real major hicup I had with my mini van it would turn over but not fire up. As for the metro distributor it shouldn't be any different as my last mini saloon came off the production line with a metro engine. My late father was a parts manager for 50 years and when we decided to check out the timing chain and found that it had a chain tensioner fitted which was a bit confusing. So he made a note of the engine number checked it out and found it was supposed to have been fitted to a metro, but that's not unusual for Austin Rover!
Daftest thing I did was have my dad try and sort my old mk3 escort as it wasn’t starting. Just before I left (borrowing his car) I said don’t forget the............immobiliser slap face

Been there mate, I serviced my Mark 1 Cavalier, plugs, points, condenser, oil and filters etc and once I'd done it I spent and hour and a half trying to get it going. Scratching my head and almost flattening the battery, f-ing and blinding and then I put my hand in my pocket......it was never going to run cos I had the rotor arm in my pocket.......what an a-hole! 😂. Still tho, this year's been shitty covid wise but I've managed to go from out of work and skint to in work and owning decent little 9 year old car in 4 months with no debt owing so it's been decent for me.
Done exact same when built an 1100 engine fir my mini, took rotor arm off to get oil pressure first...tben forgot in excitement and wondered why it would not start! Few beafs of sweat there as it was first engine I had built!

@@classicminidetails8887 interesting, I’d be looking to do the same as a later mini mine has a bracket which holds the throttle cable and heater hoses but doesn’t go through the inlet. That DSN part sure is nice 👍🏻
I did not properly tighten my datsun's battery to its tray and after a few minutes of driving i heard a whiny sound, and thought it was the fan belt. When I opened the bonnet I found the battery touching the alternator pulley and had splashed all the battery acid all over my prestin shinny engine bay. Although I had washed it all over , in a week's time I had white corrosion all over and just lost my interest in the car.
Battery acid is savage!

I wouldn’t say biggest mistake but a series of things on one car in less than 3 weeks and being in the south of France made it all the more difficult!
Did the clutch on my Mini Copper Innocenti 1300 the night before driving to Weymouth (live in Cardiff) then from Cherbourg to just outside Bordeaux, all fine and dandy, for the most part th fastest thing on the road.
4 days in and the car wouldn’t run properly, had to persuade my uncle to drive me 25 miles to a Leyland dealership which after some investigation I decided it was the coil....it wasn’t.....more investigations new plugs leads as I hadn’t changed them in a while , still not right. Last night of two weeks I had to get the English speaking euro camp rep to phone a mobile mechanic, turns out the rotor arm I changed along with the points and dizzy cap when doing the clutch, had a minuscule crack in it, changed that and my beast was back! Thankfully as I had to do the journey back to catch the ferry (400 miles roughly) in 6 hrs......remember loosing my back bumper at about 80mph flying through a village at 3am.....then when I did make in time to check in the ferry ran aground and we had to wait 12 hrs !
Still an adventure and the next weekend was the Mini’s 30th birthday party at Silverstone
But from that adventure I have not had a car or van fail on me since
But that’s the joys of owning cars especially now classic’s you will have these occasional things happen but that’s what the AA RAC Green Flag are for !

I managed to blow the brake cylinder out of my front drum brake while I was changing the shoes. I accidentally stood on the brake pedal when I stopped for a cigarette.
I fried a brand new electronic ignition module when I got two wires crossed.

Float needle in carb stuck are you getting fuel in the cylinder spark plug wet with fuel
Was definitely getting further to the top of the carb not sure it made it to the cyclinders because of the pipe
@@classicminidetails8887 love minis simple to work on a little tight for space but great cars normaly I start with a spark if its got that then fuel and if you have that air cleaner of it should have air not to many things it can be so should be easy to diagnose you be surprised how many people don't understand the basics but sometimes it just under your nose and you are looking to hard to see it anyway great channel 👍 keep up the good work
I turned the boost up to 14psi on my mini turbo before i had it rolling roaded and set up properly. As a result i completely melted piston no3 of a brand new engine freshly built by Avonbar 🤦♂️ i will not make that mistake again

Stupid mistake: leaving the engine oil cap off then going for an hour drive... silly move wouldn’t recommend. Great video as always.
A mechanic in a garage I worked at got distracted doing a service and forgot to put the new oil filter on.....similar result but luckily the only damage done was to his pride 🤣

Best one was my cousin Bob (know all) helped him change the door from a 100E for one off the one my neighbour was scrapping after much puffing and bruises he slammed the door and it dawned on him that four door and two door card don't seem to have all the same , did I laugh (guess) I was 12 🤭🤭

My stupid mistake was starting the car while it was in gear and it bumped forward and hit the corner of the garage. It dented the chrome bumper and the headlight surround
It was the day I’d finally finished getting it road legal again and I had the inspection the next day (my old Mazda, not the mini)
I’d also recommend putting a bit of hose on the fuel overflow that goes away from the exhaust. Last thing you’d want is a stuck float valve and fuel leaking onto the hot exhaust!

Had a DCOE Webber on a Aussie clubman I had ram tubes on it because they looked good didn't box bulkhead around the carby so when a full noise on the motorway engine would cut out pull over check everything it would restart and driveway fine had me stumped I took it to a local mini expert told him the Simptoms he didn't even pop the bonnet he said let me guess all you young blokes didn't box the bulkhead and I bet you still have the noise deadening Mat on the bulkhead I said yes we'll there's your problem put an air filter on it. What's that going to do I said ......now it can suck from the side with the ram tubes it's sucking the mat off the bulkhead and blocking the air intake of the Webber not enough clearance when the engine stops loses vacuum falls off by the time you get out open bonnet all ok again
Guess what he was right never did it with an air filter

First time I drove to a hot country, I parked up and saw a lot of water dripping out the underside. Young, and foolish, I thought I had a coolant system leak. Waited several hours for a very chilled Spanish mechanic. Stuck his head under, motioned me over to his van, and pointed at the AC button. Then pointed to the pool of CONDENSATION dripping off the heat exchanger of his van.
Very. Embarrassing. gf of the time ripped the P something rotten.

Used to go to meets and track days as a kid (started around 7 or 8) - only stopped because I got a bit disheartened that I might never be able to afford my dream cooper s (Brit flag top and all). Must have watched Italian Job a million times.

Not using jack stands when refitting engine on my 62 mini in 1974, used a sissor jack at full stretch on top of blocks of wood, i was laying underneath getting ratty with rubber driveshaft couplings . . . Car fell on my head, and i was working solo! Pinned down and screaming for what seemed a lifetime, spent hours in A & E having head xray'd . . Didn't find any sense at all 🤔
Pouring in seven litres of expensive oil in a stag before realising that I hadn’t replaced the sump plug 🤡🤡🤡

@@classicminidetails8887 Yes..I bought a 1966 1293 S and swopped the front subframe complete with engine box and remote, hardy spicer driveshafts, neg camber bottom arms, s displacers and rear arms etc. rh tank the clubman i had was hyrolastic so all ok.. it was my second S. ford olympic blue with black roof... stoopid mistake to make but had a youn family
