I was given a new Fiat 126 for my 21st in 1978 - the cost was £1001. It was dove grey and the starter was a lever thing between the front seats and the choke immediately beside it. No frills, air cooled and noisy as hell. I loved it. I didn't think about safety then but it was such a fun wee thing.
I`ve had 3 126`s, they have the highest smiles-per-hp of any other car I can think of, & they are one of the few cars of the 90`s that are worth significantly more now, than they were were new (£2400 new in the early 90`s), which is pretty impressive, & no one would have predicted that 20 years ago!
I would love a 126, my best friend had one as her first car back in the 90's, she had a 1980 652cc air cooled model in blue with a blue/grey interior, I loved it although it was a bugger to start in the winter. I like little cars, I drive a 2011 Smart for two

Foot hard on the brakes, and sliding back, rested against a wall, with a 500 foot drop below us. Somehow, managed to spin it round and make our way back down, Scary stuff 😂😂

Foam back on the headliner is a no go. It will get moist and moist to long so that the roof will actually get heavily rusty! The original 126 from Italy came with a headliner with room for air between the liner and the roof to keep it breathing. Seat well done. But there are new covers on the market. Or just swap the seats. Normally you take out the engine and the gearbox all at ones. The rubbers of the axle/gearbox are most likely leaking oil too. That's a common point to check and change. Block and head are both aluminium so one may wonder why the coolant was that rusty (?). My guess is that there was some oil deposits in the coolant. All that sanding of the rims. Absolutely not necessary. You could have used a paint remover of just sand blasted it. Then some powder coating would do a proper job here. Or just buy another set. Have not seen you checking the steering, brakes, brake fluid, oil change and so many more to be done before selling it for 3800 P/Sterling.
