Thanks for bringing this to our attention Geoff. I have to admit that it has taken me a while to realise that my wife knows more about the faults of electric cars/vehicles than I do, and she is not the least bit interested in cars. When she first told me about these incidents where they quickly burst into flames, I thought it was someone sensationalising electric car hate, if you know what I mean. I do like a lot of the leccy cars, but gradually have turned away from them, and now practically ignore new releases due to these shocking problems. Best wishes to all involved , it sounds a terrible incident. But in a new car it’s very likely a manufacturing fault not an inherent failing of the concept. Having said that, hybrids are the most likely to catch fire, followed by ICE with full EVs being statistically the safest of all. So that’s what I drive. Oh and one of my cars is going back into the dealer as it apparently missed an important safety recall some years back to prevent fire (a number of them burned to the ground before they discovered the design flaw.) A thought occurred to me this morning. The UK Motability scheme, provides cars for all manner of disabled people, some of whom, have significant mental and physical disabilities. The scheme, is one of the biggest purchasers of BEV and Hybrids. Just imagine the problems, if a car did ignite! I think, the people, who use that service, should wake up and refuse either type of vehicle.
The service does not require customers to refuse any vehicle. It offers a broad selection of all types (more ICE than non ICE btw) of vehicle from which customers choose (not refuse).
@@BasketCase The service requires the customer to choose a vehicle. Then to choose a dealer to provide it. Motability has nothing to do with the service that the dealer provides nor the availability of any vehicle chosen.

Yes. Less than one percent of all car fires are with EVs - that was from the honest John web site. Anyway All cars contain combustible material like brake fluid which is extremely flammable. The problem with battery fires is they are very hard to put out though
He did make t very clear it was a hybrid if you listened properly. He mentions the hybrid battery caught fire which in turn ignited the fuel tank. So very clearly a hybrid.
Except that EV fires are becoming materially less common than then already-vastly less than ICE that they were. And probability of hybrid fires like this one were always worse than OCE and not getting any better at all.
@@aidanapword You can't prove that because we don't have very old EVs that have let the repairs becoming neglected. The amount of EVs that are over 25 years old is extremely minimal.
@@aidanapword Let me take you back to my original statement that you replied to. "When EVs get older and repair neglect happens is when EV fires will become common." That is not a strawman argument, that will become a fact.
@JoeBManco except the data on the trend of EV fires from the 2012 to 2024 is clearly understood and incidence of fires is actively and markedly falling too.
I was in Wales at the weekend and on my way back on Sunday, I saw 2 seperate car fires on the M4 on the other side of the motorway. I didn't have a chance to see what make they were but I would guess they were either hybrid or electric.......
Clearly Volvo has a problem. HOWEVER, recent statistical research indicates that an ICE vehicle is 20 times more likely to catch fire than a pure EV. Oddly, an Hybrid is 40 times more likely to catch fire than a pure EV - no explanation was given for that phenomenon. Now, while it has been documented that pure EVs are less likely to catch fire (and will always hit the headlines when they do), the problem is that IF a battery suffers thermal runaway, resulting in a fire, they are a bastard to put out. Newer battery tech (notably the BYD Blade battery) are less likely to suffer thermal runaway, even if the battery is pierced. I feel sorry for the family that got injured by this event and that they should have a good case against Volvo for financial compensation. Volvo should not have been delivering new vehicles if there was signs of a fire safety issue.
For Mr Butler, a nightmare, but My God, that poor child - that he couldn't even SEE her because the noxious smoke and gas from the battery was so thick.
Hell, that must have been terrifying. This fella should sue Volvo as it sounds like they knew about the risks. His granddaughter could have been killed, as could he and his wife. 😔
He should have done his own research because if he did he would have seen that they are the burniest cars you can buy! Wouldn't touch one with a ten foot bargepole tied to another ten foot bargepole!
I’m grateful to the owners of EVs and hybrids for putting those poncy green flashes on their number plates. It helps to show the areas to avoid when parking at the supermarket.
Don’t conflate hybrids with BEVs. Gas cars catch fire 11X the rate of BEVs and hybrids catch fire 40X the rate of BEVs. Hybrids and BEVs are at opposite ends for fire risk.
Risk and consequences are different things. Battery fires are quicker and more intense so may well have 100 times the injuries, fatalities and property damage even if there are less of them.
A very serious situation, but it isn't an electric car. It is a hybrid. Where there is little to no thought in the design of battery cooling. This same nightmare has happened all over China with BYD Hybrids. Whilst many members of the general public think that Hybrids are the best next step... they are clearly unsafe.
My neighbour has bought an xc40 and leaves it on charge overnight, somewhat concerning to say the least. I've discussed with my missus what we should do if it bursts into flames (jump the back fence)
I and his parents won't even let my grandson charge his RC car overnight or put it on a fast charge . The heat even from the small battery is quite high
I had a horrific burns injury a few years ago too my legs! Real painful they are still get grief from it now! God bless Dave and grand daughter hope they both make a speedy recovery! About time these lithium battery's was baned from cars they are a danger!
This may explain why I am seeing some hybrids with green number plates now. Its as if they are being made as a warning and identification for emergency services. Saw a Range Rover Evoque on a 24 plate today with that green identification on it which may clarify it as a PHEV model.
@anonnona8099 as I said I saw a brand new Range Rover Evoque today with the green plate on it. It was one of the JLR staff cars so I can only assume they have put that plate on for a reason.

I guess when I said "No, you're not" I should have said "Not any legal ones you aren't". > It was one of the JLR staff cars so I can only assume they have put that plate on for a reason. Well, I know that JLR are close to launching a fully electric RR, but AFAIK it isn't out yet, and I don't think it will look like an Evoque. If they are also developing/prototyping a pure EV Evoque, or using one as some sort of mule/technology test-bed they generally keep as low a profile as possible. I know not all of them will do this, but the chances owners are taking are far to much. They all need to complain very loudly to the highest level of manufacturers, get them to recognise these safety issues and resolve them as quickly as possible, immediately.
Doesn't matter how expensive they are, or how good they look or how good they make you feel, they are never (potentially) worth the lives of your family, never! But in a new car it’s very likely a manufacturing fault not an inherent failing of the concept.
Having said that, hybrids are the most likely to catch fire, followed by ICE with full EVs being statistically the safest of all. So that’s what I drive.

A thought occurred to me this morning.
@@DwaynePipes The service supplies EVs and Hybrids much much quicker and cheaper than ICE vehicles.
@@BasketCase
The service requires the customer to choose a vehicle.

When EVs get older and repair neglect happens is when EV fires will become common.

Mate. To be fair don’t assume. Observe. This is what wrecks our cause - supposition.

Volvo better pay out massively
Volvo should not have been delivering new vehicles if there was signs of a fire safety issue.

toyota and honda hybrids have a good safety record … I think …. this is horrific
