Passing a test does not mean safe driving. If this is the only technique you do, you will eventually get into a wreck. Sometimes what the highway department people want is not necessarily the correct way to do something.
I honestly feel like it's sometimes dangerous to shoulder check. Even if it's just for second, that's a second i lose from my central vision - I might hit the car in front of me. Also, I shoulder check just so it looks like i shoulder check. There's something different between shoulder checking when driving, and when riding a bike.
I know it can be pretty daunting taking eyes of the road just to shoulder check while vechicle is still in motion especially if you have to shoulder check at a 90 degree angle. It only takes a split second for something to happen in front of you while looking to the side performing the check.
@@rosequeen2461 Yes i always get dizzy while moving my head right and left. The amount of shoulder check in this video would give me severe motion sickness 😐😐😐..But yes for test purposes you have to do this.
Well i understand how you feel about the shoulder check.. Honestly it got good and bad when we're using shoulder check.. And it depends on the person..how good there periperal vission.. But in this video..its helping people ..especially to all new driver if they having an exam.. This is really helpful..i swear.. Because this video was my foundation ..thats why i made it and passed my roadtest on 2nd try... Its hard to explain it.. But its so intense..but still i made.. And shoulder checking is the main job that you have to work hard and practice before were taking roadtest.. Just sharing my experiences.. Thanks sir rick august for the helpful tips regarding roadtest.. Your the best sir..i mean it..
Passed my drivers in Sep 2017 in Montreal. It was my 3 attempt so I said screw it and was telling the instructor what I was doing out lout, "speed check", "distance check" "mirror, signal, shoulder, again shoulder and turn check" blew the exam out of the water, perfect score, thanks Rick !!!!

Thank you for this. I've been a driver for over a decade, but haven't driven in the last four years. I was only able to get about two hours of practice before taking the road test, and these head/shoulder checks were the most terrifying thing for me to relearn. I kept wanting to get a really good full gaze at my blind spots. I watched this video last night before my test this morning, and you mentioning that the purpose of the check was just for a quick glance with your peripheral vision was tremendously helpful for me. I passed the test with a 94.

thanks for sharing...yeah I am making those mistakes as I am not too familiar with brakes and acceleration sensitivity...I cant feel the speed control also like I dont know when I cross 50 limit and went to 60...and then it takes time to bring down
@@smartdrivetest SO...my instructor wanted 110 degrees. Also, my instructor asked what the speed limit in a residential area on a rainy day. I said it's normally 50kms but that under ideal conditions so it's 45km since it's rainy. He said it's 30km an hour on rainy days and claimed I was speeding by going 45km. So why do we even have school and playground zones then? Am I crazy? I looked online and it said 50km and slightly less in rain or snow. BUT 30km?!
I failed simply because of not shoulder checking enough. The examiner said if I just shoulder checked once I would have passed and got not points. Now I know what I need to ace the next test

Same thing with me. Lane changes are scary for me because you have to do 3 things while still driving at a moderate or high speed at the same time and you have your eyes off the road in front of you. I usually just slow down as I look at my mirrors and over my shoulder because I'm afraid I might not have enough room. Another thing to keep in mind is shoulder checks should only take half a second, which is all you need. I guess before doing a lane change, you need to be aware of what's in front of you and at your sides first.
Yeah singing, head bobbing, drumming the wheel, texting, flipping songs, flipping birds, checking make up, ashing that joint, popping that top, adjusting that camel toe ride up, peeling that bra, flooring it, brake checking fools, tossing out trash, running granny in a ditch, playing chicken, firing out into your haters, obscene gestures to that fine assed, $!*, dozing in and out, eating and rubbernecking. Thats a lot of shit that you be doing Maisha. But you havent wrecked yet so chill.

you are too good! this video helped me improve my shoulder check in a single class.. even my instructor was shocked and I passed my road test in first try on Thursday! I didn’t make a single mistake in turns and lane changes. Thank you for explaining so well and demonstrating it.
Thank you so much. This video helps a lot. I had a breakdown driving last time I went out with my mom because I didn't understand how to look at and pay attention to all the little details of driving all at once. I guess it's just lots of practice though.
Hi Courtney Lynn: Thank you for your comment - yes, driving is a lot of practice, and then some more practice. 80) And yes, there are so many little details, and what makes it harder is that in one situation the details are harmless, and in another situation the details can be dangerous. Because driving is dynamic--always changing--the skill of driving can only be learned through experience. But keep in mind, like any learned skill, it gets easier. Just remember to breath, which will cause your body to relax. If there's anything else we can help you with, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Quick question, when you shoulder check on the drivers side, are you looking through the drivers side window or are you trying to look out the backseat window? I find that I often cant see very well through the back seat window because of the b pillar getting in the way. Thanks!
Just enough to see out the drivers side window. To make sure a person/bike/whatever is not coming up on the side. Even though the side mirrors do probaly 90% this already..there could always be that 10% chance that a person can swing by out of literally nowhere..you don't check and boom! You smash em. Make sure it is just a quick check also, you don't need to have your head turned and eyes off the road for more than a second. If you are unsure of what you saw..just take another quick check and put your eyes back on the road ahead. The only time you really want to be looking through the back window of thr car is if you are backing up.
Thank you for this! I faild my first road test because I never shoulder checked on my right side. Everyone told me to left shoulder check all the time while on the highway or to changing lanes. But no one mentioned that you have to shoulder check on the right side too or when you're simply turning at a stop sign. Which now that I think of it, its silly not to 😅 but anyways, I'm taking my road test later today and thought I'd go through all your videos again bc it simply helps me calm down 😌
I had to revisit this video … I’m 40 and my 20 year old is teaching ME to drive 😊… and shoulder checking is definitely something I have to work on. We went out on the road just the other day and it was nerve wracking at first but after a little while I actually began to enjoy it ❤
Watching this before my second attempt for my drivers test. Since the time I failed I have been practicing shoulder checks a lot but only once. Now that I watched this video I will be embedding in my head to shoulder check twice always for turns and lane changes. Thank you hopefully I pass my test tmrw.
Good luck on your driver's test. Remember to breathe. That will cause your body to relax. Drop back and let us know how it goes. All the best, Cheers Rick
Really helpful. I didn't know that you should do at least 2 checks and how to time them well enough, and that it only had to be 90 degrees. Also, I usually get anxious when doing shoulder checks because I always either get the feeling that my arms are going to start going in the direction i'm looking if I look too long or that I will miss a hazard the appears out in front suddenly. This helped lower a lot of the anxiety.
Thank you! This is something I was having trouble with but now just watching this short video made it make so much more since...because I know the SMOG thing but I “thought” to much about it....but just watching this video made me realize I was just putting to much into it and it’s that simple...click,mirror,shoulder,....mirror,shoulder, check other direction (when safe go) 😀 my test is on July 2nd, and yes I’m 37 years old and this will be my first drivers license 😑 😄

Hi When I am shoulder checking am I looking to see what’s beside me? Or the tail end beside me I have a hard time judging what I need to observe before turning and making lane changes. Thanks!
Hi TARA CANN - Thank you for your comment and query. You're simply turning your head 90° quickly. You're looking to see if there is anything in your blind area. And it is your peripheral vision that is attracted to light and movement. If there is something there, your perisperhal vision will pick it up, and then you will bring in your central vision, to inspect closer and decide if you have to take evasive action. So, just a quick 90° turn of the head for your peripheral vision to check. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

To my understanding here in Saskatoon, Canada shoulder check is more than 90 degrees, one must able to see through the window at the passenger side of the second row. I am preparing for my next road test and hoping to pass. Thank you Rick for the video clip. God Bless you and your channel.:)
Somebody's given you misinformation my friend. It's only a 90° turn of the head. You're peripheral vision is 180°, so you're looking there when you turn your head 90°. It's just a quick check. If you see something, then you look forward, and then take another look to determine what's there. Thank you for your kind words. Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick.
@@smartdrivetest First off thank you for the informative videos. But I have to disagree with you here Rick. I too am in the same city as Jimbo above, and I failed my driving test. The specific comment of the instructor was "I saw you looking through the passenger window, you have to look through the window behind". My reply was similar to your reasoning, I said "my head was to the side but my eyeballs were looking through the 2nd row window". Instructor firmly told me "I can't see your eyeballs. Turn your head more". He had the power, I failed. Been driving 20+ with no accident to my fault but I failed because I wasn't turning my head enough, sheeeesh
I had booked my road test but didn't complete it because my trainer said my shoulder check was poor. In fact, he gave no lessons and just asked me to report an hour before my schedule vicroad test. In fact your video is more instructive and good for practice. In actually driving, we are more guided perhaps by the dynamics of driving in real time situations than observing the shoulder check prescribed rules. I have been driving for decades and it was quite frustrating to postpone the test for shoulder check reasons.
Hi Gurdev Grewal - Thank you for your comment. Was the trainer a driving instructor or was it the driving examiner at VicRoads? I'm sorry to hear about the postponement, but some times these are better than going and failing the test. Hi, I saw this video months before my road test. I really appreciate your work. I followed this method and the examiner apparently thinks that 90 degree shoulder check is wrong. He told me to check all the way to the back and gave me points on my road test. He made me do turns multiple times, I followed what you did here and he said it was wrong. I am so disappointed as it is really hard to book road tests these days.

Hi Rick. Thank you so much for all these videos. I watched all of them before the test and I passed my G2 and G test on my first try :) I will keep watching your videos so that I can stay safe on the road. BTW, could you please do some videos about lane changing on highway? My driving instructor told me that I tend to turn the steering wheel too much when I change lanes on highway and sometimes on city road as well :( . And when I check the blind spot on the highway, I shake the steering wheel as well. Could you please share how you keep the steering wheel straight when you check your blind spot and how much you turn the steering wheel when you change lanes on the highway and city road? I really appreciate it! Thanks again for all your videos.

I didn’t pass my behind the wheel test today because the examiner I got thought I wasn’t looking at the mirror or over my shoulder when making left and right turns. I was but I guess I wasn’t exaggerating it enough for him to notice. So I’m glad you made this video to help me improve on my driving and I will watch more of your content to help me prepare for the next one. Thank you so much.
Also, I have question about merging bike lane when making a left or right turn. Do I need to turn my head at least 90 degrees before merging into the bike lane and do a shoulder check when making a turn at a controlled intersection?

Hi Rick, just wanted to say thank you for making these helpful videos. I took my road test yesterday but unfortunately I was unsuccessful. The examiner moved her seat back quite far when she got in and she was tall and large. I didn’t realize how my vision was blocked until we set off driving. I was trying to do my right shoulder checks by turning my head 90 degrees and using my peripheral vision, but where she was sitting blocked my view and it completely threw me off. She said I didn’t shoulder check on any of my right turns. :( It seems like she was expecting me to turn my head closer to 120 degrees.

it verry impormative and helpful of this video.. but the thing is when i got my first roadtest i fail..not because of this video..because the examiner want to over ract everytime your shoulder checking..and i think thats unfair..because i do shoulder 90degrees and 3times before each turn...others said you have to exaggerate your shouldercheck for the purpose of the roadtest.. i just really mad of there decission.. so unfair.. sir rick..your the best ..thanks for this video..and please do more video like this so everyone will pass there roadtest.. one more thing about the Learners drivers license...its not good..you cant even use your car unless you have a class5 DL person.. but what if theres no one can help you on the road to practice?.. and you know yourself that you can drive safely..because of this video.. i know some of you that reading this can understand me.. especially to those who dont have a money to get an driving school..like me.. thats why rick said..driving its not for spectator...ifyou want to learn get on the car and practice practice practice.. aaaahhh!!! im just really mad of the result.. thanks for understanding guys..drive safe..

Ok so I get that you're turning your head 90 degrees but where exactly are you looking? The rear passenger windows? Also, could you make a video on defogging windows. I had my fan on andI think that makes it worse. Thanks
Hi An Droid - Thank you for your comment and query. You're simply turning your head 90° quickly. You're looking either out the driver's or passenger windows in the front to see if there is anything in your blind area - cyclist, motorcycle, people on scooters, animals, children. And it is your peripheral vision that is attracted to light and movement. If there is something there, your perisperhal vision will pick it up, and then you will bring in your central vision, to inspect closer and decide if you have to take evasive action. So, just a quick 90° turn of the head for your peripheral vision to check. And this is the video which you seek for defogging the window: ruclips.net/video/cym0WKWolOQ/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hey Rick, I'm short so what's your advise if the seat and the part of the door area where the seat belt is attached to blocks my view of the driver side blind spot? I can't have my seat as far back as you have in your videos and my eyes are like at the middle of the headrest so I can't see above my seat. I feel doing a 90 degree shoulder check isn't enough for me.
Hello Smart Drive Test, I'd like to see a video on switching lanes at night. When I drive at night, I often have trouble gauging if there is a car in the lane next to me since there are so many headlights on even when doing shoulder checks. Thank you for your time.

4:25 This part really helped. I was unsure of what to do when you're coming to an intersection if you have the right of way, but the other street is stopped by stop signs or not. So if you scan your surroundings and nothing's there or the other street is stopped by stop signs, you just keep going.

Thanks for the video, it helped. However, I don't understand how you can pick up cars in your blind spot by your peripheral vision. For the driver's side, the B pillar and headrest are obstructing my views and I don't feel that I can see clearly. For the passenger's side, mainly the headrest would be a pain in the neck. Whenever you look over your shoulder, how can you tell if there is a car or not? I seriously doubt that shoulder check would help you check your blind spot. My instructor always tells me not to hesitate when the blind spot is clear. I then asked him what do you see when no cars are in your blind spot and what do you see when someone is riding right beside you, and he just cannot answer me. I feel like I cannot be sure of whether there is a car lingering in my blind spot or there isn't. By the way, my eyesight is perfect. Is this an intuition thing? So if it is, how can you tell that your intuition is accurate most of the times? Thanks in advance for any input.

What helped me understand this was asking someone to stand next to the car. My mirrors were adjusted to how I would normally drive. As the person moved around I checked when I could see them in the mirror and when they disappeared. Then I checked where they were standing in relation to the car and I knew from then on that those are the blind spots. (This is usually directly next to your vehicle, the personin the blind spot would be somewhere behind the mirror but before the back door.) That is the direction you want to be looking towards during shoulder check. Of course there are blind spots caused by the pillars/headrest of the car, the only way to correct for that is by moving your head around and constantly observing the surroundings. This takes a bit of practice, but the key to learning it is to know where to look and what information you want to pick up.

Where Im at we have to shoulder check before turn signal my dood
Passing a test does not mean safe driving. If this is the only technique you do, you will eventually get into a wreck. Sometimes what the highway department people want is not necessarily the correct way to do something.
Same, this vid helped me pass.
Stevo Canuck I do the same thing 😣😥
I know it can be pretty daunting taking eyes of the road just to shoulder check while vechicle is still in motion especially if you have to shoulder check at a 90 degree angle. It only takes a split second for something to happen in front of you while looking to the side performing the check.
I think it’s meant to be done while stopping or slowing down not while moving the car at a high speed
@@rosequeen2461 Yes i always get dizzy while moving my head right and left. The amount of shoulder check in this video would give me severe motion sickness 😐😐😐..But yes for test purposes you have to do this.

Greeting from 4/5/22 what are the odds
Thank you for this. I've been a driver for over a decade, but haven't driven in the last four years. I was only able to get about two hours of practice before taking the road test, and these head/shoulder checks were the most terrifying thing for me to relearn. I kept wanting to get a really good full gaze at my blind spots. I watched this video last night before my test this morning, and you mentioning that the purpose of the check was just for a quick glance with your peripheral vision was tremendously helpful for me. I passed the test with a 94.

Where I live, if you make 1 mistake, you fail.
I did everything you just mentioned perfectly. I got failed because I didn’t look over my shoulder. Not fair imo.
thanks for sharing...yeah I am making those mistakes as I am not too familiar with brakes and acceleration sensitivity...I cant feel the speed control also like I dont know when I cross 50 limit and went to 60...and then it takes time to bring down
@@smartdrivetest SO...my instructor wanted 110 degrees.

Its scary because you have to look away
think of urself as a fighter pilot, see how they move their heads in cockpit
OMG I was looking all the way back. Like 360 turn. Thankyou for this
Thank you so much.
I failed on this part
Quick question, when you shoulder check on the drivers side, are you looking through the drivers side window or are you trying to look out the backseat window? I find that I often cant see very well through the back seat window because of the b pillar getting in the way. Thanks!
Ryley I was wondering that too. Sometimes I feel like I move my body too much lol

@@smartdrivetest passed my test thank you.

Just passed my test today after watching this video. Definitely make it a point to shoulder check. Thanks 🙏🏽
Keep in mind that observation is one of the key components of both a road test and defensive driving. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help.

Hi is there a video on shoulder checks leaving roundabouts? I find it difficult doing a shoulder check while turning, I always swerve when I am.
Hi Nicole - Thank you for your comment. Speed up your shoulder check; as well, be sure to scan the roundabout as you're coming into it, that way you can expedite your shoulder check when you're leaving because you've already done some of the reconnaissance. I will keep watching your videos so that I can stay safe on the road.

4:25 This part really helped. I was unsure of what to do when you're coming to an intersection if you have the right of way, but the other street is stopped by stop signs or not. So if you scan your surroundings and nothing's there or the other street is stopped by stop signs, you just keep going.
Hi Nothing to see here - you are most welcome my friend. Have a look at this vid too: ruclips.net/video/dQH1puYzMlM/видео.html Drop us a note if we can help further my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Mike Liang - Thank you for your query. This video should answer your question my friend: ruclips.net/video/TrtgVbd87SY/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thanks for such a simple and clear demonstration of the shoulder check! It really helped me grasp the intention

I passed test in Burnaby, BC. Now I'm looking forward for getting a car :)
