#howtoturnleftandrightwhendriving #smartdrivetest #passfirsttime
The steps for turning right are below.
• Locate the turn - is it legal?
• Move the vehicle to the right and slow in preparation for turning.
• Check the mirrors, signal to the right and shoulder check.
• Determine if you can slow without other vehicle’s potentially rear ending you.
• Determine what controls (stop, yield sign or traffic lights) are at the intersection, if any.
• Scan the intersection for other vehicles, pedestrians or fixed objects.
• Shoulder check immediately before turning. Turn to the right when the post on the passenger side of the vehicle is in line with the cross-street.
• Turn the vehicle.
• Recover the steering wheel. Look up into the intended path of travel and accelerate with your right foot.
Good luck on your road test!

@@marisololmos4910 this is why I failed, I didn’t know I could get into the bike lane to turn right 😞 that’s why I’m here watching this video! You got this!!! Practice, watch these videos, and remember to stay calm during your test.

For all new drivers.
Turning right or left take your time, relax, and observe, and most importantly don’t panic. If you mess up try a different corner to the one you was at and keep trying,
Once you’ve done a few turns, pull off somewhere safely, take a breather and relax then try again soon. Don’t do to much to start with as there is a lot to take in and remember. And don’t forget your signals and lifesaver shoulder checks.
Have fun out there.
My examiners failed me for “turning too slow.” So how much time do I take? 🤔
I passed my driving test yesterday just by watching your videos! Thank you!!!

Im still working on changing lanes. Im living here in the US right now and I want to know if its okay to change lanes a mile early before im supposed to turn to either side of the road. My weakness is that i tend to slow down before I change lanes.
Hi Artessa - thank you for your comment. Indeed, it is okay to change lanes early. Yes, you need to speed up every so slightly when changing lanes to compensate for the extra distance you're travelling when driving diagonally. So, as you stated, slowing down is not good. But your strategy is a good one. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

@@ahri4423 Are you serious? Sorry to hear that.
Dr. Rick August:
You never fail to amaze me with how you break down driving maneuvers that appear relatively straightforward to the uninitiated but have a lot of cryptic fine print that can spell disaster if not accounted for. Believe it or not, I found left turns a bit easier than right turns during my training because more often than not I had to come to a complete stop prior to executing a left turn; as you have said and I have had demonstrated, vehicles turn with much greater precision at slow speeds. On the few occasions I had to proceed through a left turn without stopping, I misappraised my speed -- while not ridiculously fast, it was still enough for me to be really clumsy with the turn and earn me quite an admonition from the instructor. If I did not decelerate enough (or was late in initiating the turn), I wound up turning really wide to where the left turn looked like a question mark; if I decelerated too much, the instructor would criticize me for this pause that felt as if the vehicle had been brought to a complete stop during which she feared we would be rear-ended (both left turns and right turns).
My right turns in the early going were governed by the anxiety that I would accidentally overrun the curb so I would initiate the turn a bit later and end up turning like a commercial truck; further inflaming matters, I would get flustered at having to recover into the right lane and compensate for that by rapidly accelerating to speed. It would not be weird for the tachometer to report engine speeds of 4K-5K RPM when I was doing this. Anyway, the silver lining to this cloud is that with additional practice, I have discovered that the steering wheel will gradually unwind as I accelerate from a turn; I believe that this is the vehicle's way of congratulating me on successfully executing a proper turn. Am I correct with this interpretation?
Hi Damon Mason - Thank you for your query. You are correct on the steering my friend. Have a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/L4DkGGJKzlE/видео.html Also, if you're having trouble with the turns, I would suggest you revisit the fundamentals. Thank you so much for the advice. I’ve been doing just that for the last few days and I will continue to shoulder check around 3-4 times whenever I’m about to turn to another street. Before and after the turn. Thanks a billion. It’s starting to go into my system even for a hard headed guy like me. I’m so going to kick butt on my driving test. It won’t be a perfect score but I know that I’ll pass it. Shoulder check will be BIG on my driving test. I know my instructor will keep an eye. And most importantly stop before the solid white line up front before turning right to another street just like on the video.

PS - how has the first week of driving gone my friend?
This is now one of my biggest challenges for some reason. I have a really hard time judging how fast a car may be traveling from the ongoing traffic before I decide to make the right turn on red. I also have a hard time positioning my hands correctly when making the right turn... left turns are great but right turns are super sharp.
Hi yunaeso - thanks for your video. Did you see this video: ruclips.net/video/9QtZD0LDhls/видео.html Yes, turning right on a red light does take some practice and patiences. And know that if you're not comfortable going, than you can wait for the green light - that is an option. And be sure to sneak out a bit to ensure that the gap is sufficient to turn. Sir, I have a question. In the event that you're hauling a trailer and need to make a right turn, should you turn into the left lane to ensure that you don't hit the curb?
Thank u
Thanks for the videos. That is really helpful. I have a question. How do you make sure you won't go to the road shoulders when you make a right turn? Sometimes after you turn right, you found you are blocked by the cars parking on your right.

Cross traffic has the right of way. Thanks. Good tip. My neighborhood has an intersection where right on red traffic generally ignores left turners coming from the opposite direction of the original road. Bad.
That's called social driving my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
nice! only one reminder look down the sidewalk behind you, have had kids ride right out onto the crosswalk on bikes without realizing I was making a turn, they were coming fast and sometimes out of alleys!
Hi Ladonna - that is a good point, and is the reason that driver's should shoulder check at least twice before executing a right or left hand turn. And this is especially important for both drivers going for a road test and those operating bigger vehicles. All the best, Cheers Rick
Your videos and contents are really, really good and thank you for that. Got ticket because of new overnight installed Right Turn sign without prior notice, is that legal for city or any traffic involved control agency or department to put a new sign without notifying people living around? I'm living in this area for about 18 years and I know every traffic signs, but suddenly I got ticket for not knowing a new and far away installed sign, I know not knowing is not a good excuse, but what about mushroom like overnight growing signs for people like me who are living in this area for a long time?
hi Art O - thank you for your comment, compliment and query. Yes, as you said, not knowing is tantamount to admitting that you're not seeing the road signs. However, as you say, there should be some public outreach when new traffic signs are installed - often they'll install those "NEW" signs to warn motorists - were there any of those? If you believe you were unfairly ticketed, I might suggest going to court and explaining to the judge. Often it is the municipality or state/province authorities that install the sign, but fail to communicate to police that the sign is new and there should be a period of grace while motorists become accustomed to the new traffic controls. In other words, the police educate the public. Let me know what you decide. All the best, Chers Rick

Hi Rick. Can you please explain in more details as to what you meant by "turn when post is in line with cross-street"? My driving instructor keeps on saying my turns are too wide and too late when turning right.

What I would suggest is to work on the exercises in these videos: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/w3Dc8k1jOq8/видео.html The cross street should be just in front of you when you start turning the steering wheel. if i want to wait for a light to urn green before i turn right (instead of turning on a red light), Do i get into the bike lane or can I just stay in the my lane (right lane)?
Hi Rick,
If the light is red, do I lose points if I don't make a right turn - just wait until the light is green?
So once you guys went for your pre license course how long did you have to wait before the road test ? My pre course is in two days
Hi Essence-Realzy - - Thank you for your comment and query. Where in the world are your working toward your license. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
when turning right onto a two lane road, which lane can one use?
Do you have to yield to an ongoing traffic or stop for the traffic in the same direction when you are in the right turn only lane and the light is green(4way intersection)?
Hi Stella Park - thank you for your query. If you're in a right-hand turning lane and the light is green you do not have to stop; however, ensure that you scan the intersection thoroughly before proceeding and give the right-of-way to other road users--pedestrians, cyclists, scooter--and then proceed. If there's anything further we can do, drop us a note. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hey Rick, can you please clarify, "If I am in the right most lane, can I make a right turn when the signal shows a dedicated green left turn signal?"
Hi Ch@o$ Artifex - Thank you for your comment and query. No, because the left turning traffic has the right of way. See this video: ruclips.net/video/9QtZD0LDhls/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
hi sir rick, when turning right do i need to stop then look at my mirrors and blind spot then make a turn or that isnt allowed???
Hi Allen Sayson - thank you for your comment and query. Hi Rick. Can you help me with a question? Can I merge into the bike lane a few feet in front of a bicyclist? Should I slow down and allow the bicyclist to pass before merging?
Hi Zero T - you should let the bicycle pass; otherwise, it sounds like you're cutting off the cyclist. See this video: ruclips.net/video/aLfiLdPEC6U/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
You need to stay on that the lane closest to the curb when turning correct if you makea wide turn into the middle is that illegal
What if the right turn would put you in a right-turn-only lane? Are you allowed to go directly to the left lane, or do you have to enter the right-turn-only lane and then move over to the left lane?
How much are you turning the wheel? And does it depend on the width of the road that you're turning to?
I either turn it way too much or way too less, which then messes up my turns.
By the way, your videos are helpful!
Hi Zahra A. - thank you for your comment and query. Yes, every corner is different. Thank you for the video. I just posted it on FB because I am so tired of people who are turning right driving into the shoulder lane over the white line, then slowing down to granny speed before turning.
This didn't used to happen in Austin, but we have had so many people moving here from other states. I can only assume it is a norm somewhere else. But it is illegal here and damned frustrating if you are behind one of these drivers. I don't want to pass them because they need their berth to make the turn, but they think going into the shoulder first entitles them to drive at 2 mph before making their turn. I guess some timid driver somewhere decided that was safer than slowing traffic down for turns, but it has caught on here in Austin. No, no, no! That is not the proper way to make a right turn!
Hi AnonymousUser - Thank you for your comment. Sorry to hear about your turning woes there in Austin; however, I suspect with the aging population my friend, it's not going to get much better. Breath and take your time - life is too short. All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest I haven't noticed it being restricted to any age, but you are right that all one can do is deal with it. That and remind people what the laws are.

Hi Rick, Great videos! I have a question about inching/creeping forward. If I see cars moving in front/near me from the intersecting lane, can I still slowly inch forward to gain full visibility or do I have to wait for them to disappear before I begin to inch forward?
I believe the former is correct but the reasoning for the latter (waiting) would be 1) it might scare the moving cars into thinking I'm moving into their lane 2) it might scare the front passenger/examiner. Thanks!
Hi cafe123 - thanks for your comment and query. For the most part, I believe you are correct in your supposition. You can move forward so long as you don't enter the intersection, and so long as you are going slowly and leading the other road users to believe that you are going to proceed. No, if you just creep forward, you will be fine so long as you stay out of the intersection. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thank you so much!
Rick, I need some clarification about inching/creeping forward. 1. I have to make a complete stop before I'm going to creep forward, right? 2. is it true that you can creep forward just once? I've heard that if you creep forward once and stop and after creep forward a little bit more they count it as a mistake? 3. after I crept forward I have to make a complete stop again? right? I'm Ukrainian, sorry for my English but I have no one more competent then you to ask.
What if you're turning onto a main road, with two travelling lanes, and a curb or parking lane? I was told two different things, one in which I must turn into the parking lane if it is clear for half a block, then signal and go into the first travelling lane. I was also told to turn into the first travelling lane, not the parking lane. Which is correct? I'm taking my test soon, and this is confusing me! Thanks
Hi cookeandyehyaman - apologies for the late response, and thank you for your comment and query. Your first option is correct if the curb lane is clear and free of parked cars for a block or so. If the curb lane is littered with parked vehicles than move into the first clear travelling lane. See this video: ruclips.net/video/aLfiLdPEC6U/видео.html You're best option when turning right is to turn into the right lane; if you're turning left, turn into the left lane. One of the reasons that this can be complicated is because traffic and driving are dynamic, and the same street will change during different times of the day. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hi Rick, could you clarify what you mean by (starting to turn) when "the post on the passenger side is in line with the cross street"? My turns are oftten too broad so I really need to learn when to initiate them. Thanks!
Hi Brian Zayman - thanks for your query. I'll give you another reference point - just before you are in line with the cross street, start turning. And I would surmise that you're going too fast on your right hand turns owing to the fact that these are too wide. Slow down to 10-15kph (8-12mph) before executing the turn. Remember, the slower you go, the sharper the turn. Also, if you're having trouble with your turns, I would suggest you return to the parking lot to review the basics: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html If you have further questions, drop us a note. Why do you have to shoulder check right before you turn? I thought you shoulder check when you lane change to make the turn. Should I be doing all those extra shoulder checks on my behind the wheel test?
Hi vanchark - thank you for your comment and query. Yes, you have to shoulder check minimum 2 times every time you move the vehicle laterally or turn. See these videos: ruclips.net/video/OpiZNRU8gKE/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/MzQAmiEtXzk/видео.html For the blind spots that you can't see around your vehicle see this video: ruclips.net/video/hksBvkf78VU/видео.html And remember that the 4 key components of a road test are: 1) observation 2) communication 3) speed management 4) space management. As well, you can't shoulder check too much on a road test. If you have further questions, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
I am still confused on how I can prevent blocking crosswalks when turning right. So before I turn right, I need to stop before the white line but if I can’t see, I have to move up a little, but then wouldn’t I be blocking the crosswalk? My question is, what should I do in this case? If I can’t clearly see the cars coming up when I’m behind the white line and have to move up a little more, then at that point wouldn’t I be blocking the crosswalk while waiting until it’s safe to turn?

Question scenario: I am in a right hand turn lane approaching an intersection that has 2 lanes of oncoming traffic from the left. The street I am turning onto has a broken white line right hand turn lane (that I would be turning into). There is is a light for this right hand turn lane that gives you a green arrow/red light. My question is. When it is a red light and (since it is a right hand turn lane that is clear) can I after coming to a complete stop (even if the light is red) make my right turn - even if oncoming traffic (coming from the left) is still moving through? The only issue that would come about that I can see is if a vehicle in the right hand lane moves directly into that right hand turn lane before completely crossing the intersection. Thanks.
Hi Zachary - Thank you for your comment and query. Do you have the address of the intersection which you're thinking? If you send that to me I'll have a look on Google and will be able to give your more precise information. All the best, Cheers Rick

Referring to the question - heading north on Market St. getting into right turn lane to Lake Blvd.
You had mentioned to turn in behind the vehicle when it is clear however since it is a right hand turn lane that you would be turning into initially are you legal to make the turn even with oncoming traffic moving through from the left? As I would think they would have to wait until they were all the way across the intersection before they could signal and merge into the right hand turn lane if any of those oncoming vehicles wanted to do so - hence if that is the case - it would be safe and legal for me to make my right turn and then they would have to negotiate their lane change accordingly. I notice some people don't make the turn even though it is clear and it seems like it should be ok to do so.
Hi Zachary - Thank you for your query. If you are turning right and facing a red, and the traffic on the opposite side of the intersection are making a left on an advanced green, the left-turning traffic has the right of way. If they don't have the turning arrow (advanced green) then neither has a "clear" right of way, which I know is odd. And this comes down to the saying, "You can be right, or you can be dead right." Yes, you can turn right and let the left-hand turning traffic figure it out. However, in many, many occasions, the left turning vehicles are not going to turn into the left lane, they are going to go right over to the right lane. Thus the defensive posturing of moving into the spaces behind the left turning vehicles. After you made the stop at the obstructed right turn, you moved forward across the pedestrian crossing.....In the event a pedestrian comes into view do you proceed or wait for them to step into the street and cross in front of you?
Hi Mike Moore - as long as the pedestrian stays on the sidewalk you would proceed. However, if the pedestrian steps out into the road, then stop. Whenever in doubt on a road test, just stop. I can't stress that enough - when in doubt stop. Too often students fail a road test because they barge forward. Remember, the right of way is never taken, it is always given. Watch this video too for pedestrians: ruclips.net/video/tjgFps8i2MY/видео.html All the best, Cheers Rick
Do u press the gas pedal first or turn the sterling wheel ?when turning
Hi Amaan Amjad - thanks for your comment. Slow the vehicle, turn the steering wheel, and recover the steering wheel and accelerate. Depending on the size & configuration of the corner, you may have to use a bit of throttle, but on most right-hand turns you turn first and then accelerate. If there's anything further we can do drop us a note. Thanks Cheers Rick

some people are telling me that when I turn right, I have to turn into the parking lane first and then signal left to merge into the actual driving lane, is that correct? I am really confused.
Hi Bryan Timbal - Thank you for your query. When turning right, you have to move to the most inside lane. However, if there are parked cars close to the intersection you'll have to move over. Again, that is going to take a bit of practice, and I would counsel you to take a practice driving test with an instructor if you're not already taking lessons. Quick question, if im making a right turn on a green light but is someone crossing in the crosswalk parallel to my car (the crosswalk to your right before you turn) and they’re on the other side of the crosswalk, do I have to wait for them to fully cross or can I proceed with my right turn since they’re not yet in my lane. I have my test next week and I’ve been confused about this, thanks.
Hi Dave - see this vid my friend: ruclips.net/video/bLqTWM8xJE4/видео.html Basic rules: if they're going away from you, you need 1/2 lane buffer; if they're coming toward you 2 1/2 lane buffer, otherwise you have to wait for them to attain the curb on your side. Do you have to yield to people who are turning left onto the street you're turning right onto?
Hi lizab - great question. Now keep in ming, that the right of way is never taken, it is always given. If the left turning vehicle are turning on an advanced green, than yes you have to yield to them. If not, then it becomes a bit more complicated, but yes most of the time, right turning vehicles can proceed before left turning vehicles. I would love to know when you can do hand over hand when making turns? I am so confused when some people say you don't then someone else says you do.
Hi Sharon - Thank you for your comment. Yes, some places allow hand-over-hand, and others require the push-pull method. The best place for that specific information is a local driving school or the local licensing centre where you're going to take your driving test. I had some chump that was turning right while I was turning left onto a dual lane road. I take the left lane and I assumed chump would take his right lane. But he proceeds to block both lanes perpendicular to the road stopping me in the intersection yelling and screaming he has the right of way. Who is in the wrong? I also proceed to yell and scream at him shit got real. Since we both had a lane to turn into who is in the wrong? He seemed like one of those lane jumpers that always turn into the far lane.
