- “Darwin, diet, disease, and dollars: how the sugar in processed foods changed society”
The Western diet is a primary factor in the etiology of metabolic syndrome. This lecture will explain the two phenomena most closely associated with the metabolic syndrome; that is, leptin resistance, which leads to obesity; and insulin resistance, which leads to chronic metabolic disease (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease; and likely cancer and dementia as well). In each case, we will explore the specific relation between dietary sugar and the pathogeneses of these two phenomena, in order to explain how these two processes, which in the past were adaptive, but which in our current dietary environment have become maladaptive. These maladaptations belie our current global pandemic of chronic metabolic disease, which threatens the healthcare budget of every country.
We will also investigate how the food industry has usurped these evolutionary mechanisms for their own purposes, in order to foment continued consumption and our current global health crisis. - Наука
Dr. Lustig is the bomb. His lectures should be compulsory listening for all medical students. I'm amazed how hardly anyone has heard of him.
I agree. Instead slaving away learning useless biochem, we should learn this stuff.
gtrdoc911 Over 3 milliion views on his sugar the bitter truth doc. More people than you think have heard of him ;)
regina george Despite all those views, any of my patients that I ask have never heard of him. Thankfully the message that added sugars are bad for you is starting to pervade the general public and some people are listening.
regina george Yes, I agree. He's famous. He even talked about how his first video had changed his life.
+regina george To be fair, I argue over half the views are ppl watching it who already saw it--never bad since it's a lot to, uhmmm, digest... and students I teach (when I teach nutrition courses to med students and nursing and dental school kids) tend to watch him 2-5x depending on how quickly they get the info... and how much they freak out in the best way!
Becoming aware of Dr Lustig's work is actually Life changing ... His presentations are amazing.
I personally have given up all sugar and alcohol for the past year. I have lost weight and feel great. I am over 50 and have a waist of 31" Wake up people, sugar is devastating.
i am to addicted and have no help only those interested in keeping me down fat and addicted
Super! Absolutely adore Dr.Lustig! 👏🏻
I love you Dr Lustig. You are the bomb!!!!
This great lecture answered a question for me regarding fructose . I couldn't understand how one type of sugar - sucrose - was being metabolised in a completely different way from another - fructose !? It is obviously an evolutionary development that allows the bounty of fruit in late summer to be utilizised rapidly for fat storage prior to winter with its calorie shortages , or for hibernation . In nature this is a beautiful adaptation , but when fructose is available in the diet all year around and more dangerously found as fructose syrup in commonly eaten processed foods , then this adaptation becomes very dangerous . Thank you Dr Lustig .
Interesting. Thanks Dr.
fantastic info, what this is not mainstream info
blows my mind
There is an enormous number of people that stand to lose a lot of money if Dr Lustig's message becomes common knowledge. The healthcare industry makes i'ts money from selling pills and procedures to sick people, not selling meat and vegetables to healthy people.
What a fabulous channel you have UU!!
Great explanation of digestion & brain biology culminating around 17:06, and then that little joke about "his patients" right after was great ^ _^
A real hero I look up to him so much, he inspires me to continue studying nutrition. I hope to be even half as knowledgeable as him someday. THANK YOU DR LUSTIG
Excellent presentation! I love those funny moments
This man is great.
Thank you so much Sir
what about intermittant fasting doc...to simulate the same effect as this drug. cant see my doc wanting to perscribe anything that would help as Im a sloth.
Cross reference these lectures with Dr. Chris Knobbe's presentation on SEED OILS!!! Then hear Dr. Eric Berg, Jason Fung, and Dr. Boz.
The sound quality need here needs improving though. I'd recommend plugging in speakers or listening with mobile or something.
If you don't believe Dr. Lustig, listen to Will Smith tell you @ 37:30.
lol
There needs to be corresponding development of recipes and cooking videos. I have his cook book, and I like oatmeal, but the book is starving for contents.
sobidoodle
See Dr Tim Noakes has a LCHF cookbook .
I have that book and can recommend it too :-)
I praise First Lady Michelle Obama, her effort to bring fresh food knowledge and access to young people, as well as the importance of exercise, is extraordinary !! President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle, accomplished much for American people's health & fitness! 🇺🇸
32:30 If it's lowering of insulin using the drug which resulted in the weightless why not go in a low carbon diet, would that achieve the same results ?
12:15 Peptide YY
I spoke to my Friends in Africa about the change in their diets and health.
Diabetes was not a word they knew.
Their food choices have changed .no cheeps no Pepsi/soda, processed , prepared food. That their parents didn’t have .
Imagine all the mainstream lies in all other fields of medicine.......
Sadly they are not imaginary and you can read about them in such books as "Malignant Medical Myths", "The Pioppi Diet", "The Salt Fix", "Fiber Menace" and "Misguided Medicine" and "Medical Myths Doctors believe". I'm so-called 'Type-1' diabetic and Dr Richard K Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution" as well as his RUclips series "Dr Bernstein's Diabetes University" debunks such beliefs as protein causes kidney damage and that diabetics should therefore restrict their protein intake. Just don't get me started on the red meat cancer nonsense and five-a-day fruit and vegetable mantra.
Commenting for algorithm
Cruelty to the poor mice is just awful beyond belief and all the psychopaths laughing in the audience. God help the animals.

Sugar, dairy, meat feed the lustful demons.
How many inches is his waistline? 40? Fruit won't make you fat bud, protein will
Imagine what he would look like if he ate sugar.
if from fruit, lean as can be
***** lol you obviously don't watch my vids
***** you called me vegan brah
When does he say that fruit is bad?
Hmm, another fat person claiming that carbs cause obesity. What should I make of this pattern?
+Clyde Rembrandt Not carbs, just Fructose, a subset of carbs. Carbs in the form of Glucose if just fine
Hey Look! It's a troll, probably a vegan, probably developing mental disorders due to his low fat diet!
Stan Rodgers
Actually, vegans are less likely to suffer from dementia. www.karger.com/Article/Abstract/110296
But, don't let that bother you. After all, since when has the low-carb cult been interested in science?
Sorry, but I think it is the vegan group that works hard to be blind to facts. I do believe in freedom of choice so have fun.
Stan Rodgers
Indeed, I'm free not to respond to brain dead folks.
A bit of sophistry in there. Sugar alone isn't the problem, although it will do a number on your teeth unless you take care of them. The problem is meat or sugar in combination with meat. Yes, it can be stuffed into your stomach, but so can poisonous mushrooms. There are some organic life that we can eat, and others we should avoid at all costs. Meat is one that we should avoid. Yes, it is possible for the body to adapt and even thrive on eating meat, however it will be short-lived before the problems that Lustig mentioned surface and can remain a problem for decades.
My mother ate land animal meat or fish almost every day. She ate a lot of vegetables, too, but not much processed food because we couldn't afford it. Everything was made at home.. She turned 90 in January. She stopped driving about five years ago. Since the near death of her youngest son a few years ago, her memory has been slipping, but she walks unassisted and takes care of herself as she still lives in her own home with two younger relatives. Pills were foreign to her up until a few years ago, so she's lived a healthy life and brought eleven kids into the world. We can say meat is much different today than in the 80s and before then, but grass-fed animals would still be okay to eat today.
I can't believe I used to buy into this bullshit. I want to see this guy's lab values
