    Life expectancy, quality of life and health-span are going down, and not because of Covid. We are witnessing an epidemic of chronic noncommunicable disease (CNDs) (such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke, fatty liver disease, cancer, dementia) as well as mental health issues (addiction, depression, anxiety) and autoimmune conditions which are increasing in prevalence and severity. These diseases of metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction cannot be helped with a pill, but rather with food. But not just any #food. “Let food be thy medicine” is true only if it is the right food. The wrong food, however, will poison you over time.
    Prof. Robert Lustig, paediatric neuro-endocrinologist and best-selling author of “Fat Chance”, advises us to take our health into our own hands in order to dodge the agendas of big food, big pharma, and to an extent, modern doctors who don’t have the time (nor often the knowledge) to teach us about prevention, lifestyle and the power of food to heal.

    Love this man. He isn't selling vitamins or supplements or pushing a particular way of eating. I have exercised all my life but menopause caused a bit of spread! I dropped my carbs to around 50g a day and lost 9kgs. Lots of healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables. Simple unprocessed food. It's finding what works for you.

      Be careful: a lot of people have serious health problems with keto. The danger is that on keto you feel so good at the beginning...but some people lost their gallbladder, developped thyroid problems and dry eyes disease: we don't know the long term consequences of keto.

    I’m an ophthalmologist. And I totally agree with him. This explains why diabetic complications like diabetic retinopathy still continue to progress and cause damage despite perfect glycemic control. We’re treating symptoms not the disease.

      I get confused with some of this. Fruit contains Fructose so does that mean to stay away from fruit or should you stay away from added sugars as much as possible?

      @@NoContextRDH Even though fruits contain frutose and gluetose, they are packed with helpful vitamins and minerals, therefore, the sugar in fruits compare with sodas and soft drinks, is good for us. Although we shouldn't over do it because of the sugar content. Please check out Dr. William Li on this topic. He is an expert in this subject.

    My French immigrant friend got very sick and finally agreed to see my alternative health care person. After months of suffering, she cured in one session: told him he’s allergic to wheat and gave him some Standard Process vitamins. Instantly, he got better. He stopped eating wheat, but only in the US. When he returns to France, he has no wheat allergic. It’s our American wheat, poisoned by glyphosate and such.

    When I have no time or money to eat, I just fast and feel much better afterwards. The best thing when eating correct things and fasting is that it clears the mind, now taking own decisions, easier to say NO, thinking about several things at the same time qualitatively and with nuances, while walking and enjoying the scenery. The mind opens, because all the small capillaries are now flowing. It is not 110% it's brain = 200%. Fact checked on myself.

    This is what I did in high school ate huge salads common, vegetable ice berg lettuce ,green and red pepper ,radish , tomatoes, onions , it change my health .
    I would eat it for lunch then did eat till dinner . That would be meat and potato usually .
    I learned to eat my Potatoes a day after I cooked them . I just did .it bring downs the Suger .
    I would eat whole wheat toast with jam .and fruit too . But not every day .
    Wheat was different back them .
    Then keto came along , I knew to much protein . I was eating out a lot . Not good , full of canola oil and sauces laden with hidden Suger .
    It's all gone down hill .
    Learn to cook .🎉

    I purchased a book YEARS ago called, "Suicide by Sugar," but did not take heed to it - I am now, and have gone carnivore and in only two weeks, I feel SO much better and problems with stomach have almost gone.

    Thanks a million times for sharing your wealth of knowledge with ordinary people. Doctors for the most part have very little training in diet and its importance in the wellness of their patients.       It's difficult to stop craving sugar, but don't be too hard on yourself either. When you get to the point that sugary "treats" that you once loved are now too sweet for you, you will know you're definitely on the right path.

      @MaggieTrudeau Hi! That's my daily struggle too! My Endocrinologist told me that when I get that urge/craving to eat a hand full of walnuts and dried cranberries (naturally dried no sugar added) with a glass of water. So far it's helping.

    I'm glad I found this channel. I've been following preventative medicine type doctors for 3 yrs as a chef pastry chef an chocolatier and with all you smarty pants type people explaining great information to people who will take time to listen an care through research on nutrition..
    But what about the masses. Why haven't us smart people simplified the info for people who have trouble learning new things. Cooking properly is important and we are doing it wrong (high heat )...
    But in schools, on TV shorts like commercial..time to go go work

    Such a kind, wise and incredulous thorough healer of the century! Been his fan since "Sugar, the Bitter Truth" came out 2 years after RUclips came on the horizon! I felt so relieved that finally all my life's fight against sugar has a scientific and authoritative proof then (my family, my next generation and the whole Western culture, esp. the dentists giving lollipops right after the examination, teeth extractions). Therefore am so elated to see how it grows like a beautiful sunflower during this 14 years! Love for the 2 super human beings for such excellent video!.

    If lack of fiber makes the "bacteria feed on the mucin layer of the intestinal lining (19:05)", then using the same logic, the same has to happen while we do intermittent fasting (making it bad for the body). Am I missing something?.

      It's interesting that you found the presenter charming. I did initially and then increasingly found her irritating. Referring to intermittent fasting as a fad? That ruined it for me. Asking questions as to whether grass-fed beef and dairy are better? I assumed that a basis of understanding would be required in an interviewer. When she called intermittent fasting a fad she essentially gave permission to others watching the video to assume that she is correct. She isn't.
      She did a similar thing with gluten-free. I'm not gluten sensitive but many are including Dr Lustig. She has this condescending snickering affect when she talks about things she doesn't understand and asks questions that she should already know the answers to.

(A note about nut milks, besides what was said: Most have an emulsifier added such as carageenan, gellan-carob-or any other gum…And these are reported to be quite damaging to your microbiome.)

      and they are gross! Chalky and nasty on the tongue. I buy heavy cream, and most brands have a lot of that crap. I can get farm local cream for $9 US/pint and it's actual cream through and through.

    "Wholegrain " bread is not wholegrain , and is therefore a Refined Carbohydrate that raises blood glucose /insulin .However, the manufacturers are legally permitted to write "wholegrain" on the packaging , because they started with a whole grain when they made it .This is actually happening in this day and age !!!. (2,023).

    Thank you Dr. Lustig. A wealth of research and information. It’s a big PILL to swallow!! I am curious as to why the health insurance companies continue to pay out for all these claims that are essentially caused by sugar and the food industry. Do the health insurance companies some how make money off of this visous circle of death? I would figure they do somehow otherwise they would not continue to pay out all these high dollar claims !!! And I would bet they have the money and power to fight these industries if they wanted to!!!!

    Dr. You are BIG Fiber Fan. But you work with people eating sugar and veggies and you may need Fiber to clean out system. BUT, I don’t think Fiber is needed if you are on Carnivore Diet. I am on Only Meat diet, 78 yrs old, and I have lost 100 #! My memory has greatly improved, pain free, no longer diabetic 2, and I feel good every day. I stopped ALL statins and I only take thyroid med! When I hit 313# and doctor increased Crestor to MAX amount plus stomach injections to lower chlorestetol…I could not find my house one night! That was it for me and I went to meat! If you think I am a nut…fine…I live in Mississippi. 😂

    I know I'm late to this party because it was made a year ago, but I am hoping to get an answer: since honey is made of fructose and glucose, is it in the 'bad books' for consumption?? I use it in my tea instead of table sugar. Do I need to cut out honey altogether or are there enough nutrients in honey to make the little bit of fructose it contains OK to use?? Thanks in advance.

    Why not slow-cook the meats or other foods in Olive Oil on lower temps??? Would that not fix the problem of creating Trans-fats?? And what temperature floor actually caused the transformation??? Also, I'm very surprised you didn't broach the subject of sugar substitutes such as Splenda and Stevia. Has Dr Lustig addressed these previously???

    PLEASE HELP
    I have a little girl whose got Cysitic Fibrosis- at almost 2 years old and after priceless information from a very close & valued friend I started her on low carb low sugar non processed food minimal
    Vegetable fats. High protein high animal fats everything is being cooked from scratch- making sure her diet is highly bio-available.
    Since making this change I’ve seen a massive reduction in her symptoms and she’s passing normal stools (ie not even a normal for CF stool- a normal person type stool), as well improvement in activity levels and cognitive function.
    Because her weight again is slow is but she cognitively very switched on (when she’s not had carbs) they want me to increase her carb load by 150% despite me showing them evidence of how it her effects her stomach with bloating, her breathing and her activity levels.
    I’m a paediatric nurse myself so I have good working knowledge of A&P so I understand the nature of videos like this very well.
    All my team want to do is subject her to food trials, further testing, and the biggest problem increasing her carb load.
    They don’t seem to be interested how much better her physiological symptoms of her condition are when she’s on a low carb
    And she suffers with raised liver enzymes.
    Please help- I’m worried I’m going to be accused of neglecting my girl when I’ve seen how much more improved she is on a low carb/sugar high fat diet.

      All for doing something different from the “normal”that has seen significant improvements for my daughter- she’s never has a respiratory infection and she has CF.
      & It’s not just from a disease perspective but and all round holistic perspective her emotional and social, physical and cognitive abilities all greatly improve and her self drive and motivation with it.
      Yet when she has carbs she’s wheezing, bloated miserable and teary because she can no longer do simple things like going up the stairs or climbing on to a chair to wash her hands at the sink after going to the bathroom.
      It’s so heartbreaking- I now I’ve got defend my actions due to there outdated skills knowledge.

      @@Crochedandconspiracies . Carbs as in starch? I'm retired & started intermittent fasting and have my 1st meal at 2-3pm everyday. Had my main meal at night. A full stomach help me to sleep. I'm 66 and my stomach is still flat.
      Have you thought about Milk Kefir? Gut health is everything and most (70%) of our immune cells are in the gut. My mum 92 was half dead after the 2nd Pfizer jab. I brought her back to life with Milk Kefir.

      Thank you, I haven't tired Kefir with her yet- but I will definitely give it a consideration.. She has High animal fats, home made bone broth she has a mixed diet mostly consisting of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food and everything is cooked from scratch so packed full of beneficial spices and herbs also. she loves her olives, fish, meat, avocado, feta cheese and full fat greek yoghurt and low GI fruits- she has raised liver enzymes and vitamins deficiencies which consumption of sugar is known to inhibit- so it baffles me that the want to increase her carb allowance including simple and complex carbs. which all converts to sugar. Even her dieticians have stated "she has a better diet then we do" and "she has a very grown up pallet" yet its still not good enough for them because she not following todays projected national growth and weight gain trends.

    Turns out... this guy is a damn genius. Looking fwd to reading his book. So how do you cook things? Extra virgian olive oil? Lower heat? And some foods are easier to digest when cooked obviously ..like...broccoli! Oh and cooking helps get rid of lectins in veggies. What is the best way to cook fish? Baking? Many studies have exposed olive oil to high heat for long periods of time. Even under such extreme conditions, the olive oil does not form significant amounts of harmful compounds. Some studies use it for 8 hours whixh is a bit extreme and bogus.

    American steers grass-feed for 1000 days then go to a feed lot for six weeks, which is an open-air compound. They do not get antibiotics until they go to the feed lot. This information is available all over, including USDA publications that get sent out to ranchers. I live in ranch country and can see cows grazing out my window, and I've met ranchers, who care a lot about their animals. The reason the ranchers do the feed lot finish is they can pack on 500 pounds to each three-year-old cow, and that means they can feed their own families because 500 pounds per steer adds up to sufficient income to pay the mortgage. If the cows were grass finished, we'd be paying $20/pound for burger. I love Lustig, but he has that totally wrong. Test: if you're american, have you ever seen cows in the field, grazing? Then clearly, they don't grow up in factories, do they?

      I know many animal farmers, including my uncle, that raise them CAFO for convenience of space and cost. It certainly isn't as healthy, you're right. We have signs all over the Midwest protesting CAFOs, yet obviously those are cheaper per pound to eat, for good reason... Less healthy. It's hard to want to spend $20/lb right?
