Yeah, me. I can talk for hours on end, without repeating myself about fire engines/fire trucks. Difficulty talking on a phone. LOVES a routine. Anxiety. Yep. Oh, and hyperlexia. There is a tree in Southern California, that when it blooms in the spring smells like an unwashed hind part of a person. Smell drove me crazy.

I just want to say that I think you’re an awesome guy Dan! I know that like most people on the spectrum, you have talked about your own struggles with loneliness and not having a lot of friends and maybe it’s because I’m on the spectrum too but nothing about you seems odd or unusual to me. You seem like such a fun, sharp, genuine person and I would love to have a friend like you! Great video as usual. 😊

I have to say, being on the autism spectrum has made dealing with this pandemic really easy for me. As I work in live theatre/music, I haven’t worked hardly at all since February 2020. I’ve barely ever left the house. I love this! I’ve had the exact same routine the entire time. I haven’t had to deal with people (other than my husband and doctors). I’ve been able to delve into my special interests - LPs and CDs and music of all sorts - and I’ve had no interruptions. I think I’m the only person I know who loved having to stay home all the time.
I’ve missed seeing my few friends as often as I’d like and I’ve really missed having a paycheck, but I’ve spent very little money - no eating out, no new clothes, no driving, no travel - so I’m doing OK. My anxiety levels are much lower, too, since I’m almost never in social situations and I don’t have to deal with traffic, noise, uncomfortable clothes, etc.
Of course, I have a compromised immune system and am in the highest risk group for severe COVID, so I’ve been terrified of being in public, but being vaccinated and having gotten my booster shot, I’m feeling less anxiety about going out into the world. I’d still prefer not go out in public, but I’m at least able to function reasonably well when I’m out and about.

It's important to eat some "green stuff" , so I personally try to put in a bit.... even if it is just some potato product (crisps, chips, latkes, mashed potatoes, potato soup...) or weirdly enough onions and cabbage.

I was diagnosed at 28, and didn't even suspect it until one day my best friend's girlfriend, whom both are Aspies said, have you ever noticed that all your friends are autistic? It dawned on me then. I thought I was in 2018 then in 2019 I thought "hmm maybe not". I'm very vocal and open about being autistic. Because so much stigma exists. And my special interest was a combination of cars, aircraft and mathematics and science. I did my degree in Mechanical Engineering. And became inducted to the iron ring ceremony. Today, I remind people that I am autistic. But I'm also qualified to work as an aerospace and automotive engineer. I became an expert in Lean process implementation and got into MIT's research on Toyota. And despite my social shortcomings, my special interest got me alot of attention from recruiters. But my social issues and anxiety has caused me issues at work too. It's hard. But when people make fun of autistic people, I ask them if they are rocket scientists too

I recently came across your channel as I was feeling that maybe I am on the spectrum but have never had an official diagnosis and wanted more information to relate myself to the symptoms and honestly, thank you so much for the information you share! It's really helpful!
Growing up, my teachers at school complained (till my 10th class) that I was the quietest in class, but I thought that was because I was not interacting enough. So I started interacting more but even then, till the last day I was called the least talkative student. I also had problems picking up the phone (we used to have only fixed phones without caller IDs so you can imagine the fear) and going to the market to even by an eraser for myself.. So when I left home for college, I decided I would talk a lot and be outgoing and basically "become an extrovert" because honestly I thought it was because I was an introvert.. and going out, talking to people was not that bad but there were times when this weird social fear would take over and I would just freeze. Luckily, I was surrounded by good humans and always got out of such situations without scarring myself psychology.
Earlier I hadn't paid much attention to my mannerisms and was not at all connected to myself, because that just used to overwhelm me and shut me down. But as I have had time for myself to sit back and think, I do see a lot of traits like not maintaining eye contact, hyper concentration, not understanding verbal instructions, shutting down when in large groups and then coming back home and be like why didn't I say this or why didn't I do that and the crippling social anxiety which had prevented me from leaving the house in a very long time. I don't socialise anymore and find people uninteresting but actually I know I just find them intimidating and always think that they will find out that I am faking my way)
So I took the AQ test (got the link from one of your videos) and my score was 35.
I am planning to go get a formal diagnosis soon.
This was an elaborate thank you that I wanted to tell you. I am watching more of your videos and it's just so good!

I just wanna say I digg ya man, and I appreciate every single video you post, every single one has benefited me and my son! I'm just starting to understand myself, and only because my son is on the spectrum and I've HAD to stop and slow down and learn, and in that understanding I've discovered a lot about myself and why I am the way I am, I put myself on the back burner til I couldn't ignore it anymore lol, but now I do! And it helps me be such a better mother(and like "self" to myself! I understand myself and my son so much more!) Thank you. So much. Your videos "please" my analytical\logical mind lol. Kinda wondering if I should see about getting diagnosed cuz your videos are soooo relatable and not cuz ive been diagnosed with dyslexia(dyscalculia, dyspraxia, ADD)...figured im on the spectrum, I do have several people in my family on the spectrum, my paternal cousin was diagnosed with asburgers at a young age and i always thought we were similar
    ......
But the obsession(mythology, certian fantasy novels), food habits(food cant be touching, it have to disassemble chicken wings and eat the meat seperate from the skin), i suck with socializing, (coincidencdentally, several of my better friends are on the spectrum and i get along with them the most), ive had panic attacks cuz of overwhelming stimuli before as well mainly at my inlaws cuz my mil used be challenging but she's chilled
    ...
I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which has over laping things but theres always a chance i could be on the spectrum too

AAAH! Yeah, I should totally get tested. I identify with the food not touching thing, the routines, the obsessive interests (if I discover something that gets me hooked, I will become completely obsessed for months on end to years and it will be all I want to talked about), I've had a lot of embarrassing meltdowns/shutdowns over the years that are still a thing for me, and my social anxiety is though the roof. Basically, I can only be around animals for long periods of time, I am not good at socializing with people.
However, the lines might be a bit blurred with certain symptoms as I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder so there may be a bit of gray area there. I still need to be tested, though, and I'm not sure where to go since I'm 35 and in the US. I'll figure it out, I guess.
Thanks for all the videos, Dan, you're amazing!

The rectangular plastic trays with pastel colors and separate compartments in junior high AKA middle school... They were fantastic for not touching food! I'd mash up my peas and then eat them. Or if my food had aluminum foil, I always compacted it into a crude swan shape (or 2 swans, bigger mama and smaller papa) and take it home to give to Mom. Any extra aluminum foil was made into a small bowl-like nest with exactly 3 tiny eggs in it...no more no less.

I am sure it's the noise or vibrations of loud voices and many voices at once overwhelming his senses. He won't eat in groups settings. He gets angry at kids his age not playing with him or understanding him. He has no sense of stranger danger, just goes up to random people and hug them, or refuses to respond to someone trying to engage him. He will obsess over a story or video all day long.

Anxiety could bring on heart problems. It could lead to you going without sleep for weeks. It can lead to you being so frantic the GP's and overworked Pshych's label you as Schizophrenic. In my case it was brought on by 'bringing home' a software coding project, by its nature alone, in an insanely short deadline. My exhaustion was then compounded by other projects 'til my body and brain could take no more. From the age of 36 to retirement I was essentially unemployed. And yes, I was a lonely child, mid kid of five, shy, bashful, rarely fitting in, hated sports (rugby especially) excruciating handwriting even I could not read on occasion. But a little above average in some ways. And now I'm a lonely adult with a very few friends, and learning ukulele with a class which performs locally. And in some ways I am glad these labels weren't invented when I was young.

I’m 45 and am being reviewed for an ASD spectrum and Cyclothymia (“mild” type of bipolar)
Yeah I admit I have routines
Yeah I have loads of special interests
Yeah I eat Sunday dinner into positions and then eat them in food orders (carrots, peas, sweetcorn, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes then parsnips)
I will deconstruct a chicken biririani.. or chilli or lasagna….
Yeah I used to be really shy and bad at talking but I developed a mask at age 22 and I’m fine but some days I need to decompress privately….
Yeah I do have occasional rage/anger issues
I was quite a loner when little and have a small group of freinds….
I always assumed I was just “odd” or (ugh I hate the term) “quirky” but the low end bipolar and the possible low end ASD Asperger’s all makes sense as to whom I am… this is also all coupled to the fact I come back as an MBTI E/INTP-A or INTJ-A and enneagram…
I’m happy to be on the “mild end of both neurological spectrums and coupled with my mild Dyslexia and clumsy (dyspraxia) makes me whim I’ve been for 45 years…
Love the video and your channel…

Okay, I pretty much fall into all five of those categories. I also have ADHD. This probably explains why a friend's non-vocal daughter who didn't connect with anybody, just adored me! She would come over and lay her head in my lap and go sound to sleep. Her mom was like, "she doesn't do that with us her parents?" I had no clue at that point that I was on the spectrum. My ADHD is severe, and I have tried to blame so many things on my ADHD, but wow! Yeah! I am 57 now, and I am just now getting intervention and therapy for my ADHD and my therapist keeps alluding to the fact that I probably have autism too. Explains why my life has been so f*d up not knowing that I was neurodivergent!

Hi Dan ! I have a friend who has high functioning autism. He likes to play a game called "Animal Crossings," and he loves videos with airplanes. He flies an airplane in an online game that he has. He sends me videos or pictures in Instagram of "Animal Crossings" and airplanes over and over again. I'm not really interested in that. I love my friend though. I try to treat him with understanding, kindness, and love. Also, I have 3 grand kids who have autism. I hope you are doing well Dan. ~ Love & God Bless =)

I haven’t been officially diagnosed, but I’m trying to find someone that can do that for me but it’s hard to find. Anyway I truly believe I have ASD. One reason is I absolutely freak out when force to wear a mask. I go into panic mode every time I have to go to the doctor or the store. I can’t even do face shields, because I can’t breath. I absolutely hate doing dishes yet I’ll have a meltdown if the dishes aren’t done and cleaned. The smell make me nauseous and I hate the feeling of the soap or water or whatever else I touch. My hands get dry as well afterwards and I hate the feeling of lotion on my skin.

My son has autism and ADHD - he does really well in class but when it comes to taking the tests his results don’t reflect how much studying etc he has done (his test results are really poor) and he honestly puts so much work in but for some reason he just doesn’t do well when it comes to the tests! He sits in a room by himself with a teacher (so no distractions) and he also gets extra time - but I was wondering if their was anything else that would help him?

Is he allowed to ask clarifying questions about the test? I would sometimes struggle if I didn't understand a question or the answers. Not due to lack of knowledge in the topic but due to weird wording that didn't make sense to my brain. Maybe consider that? But I would try asking him if he knows what part he is struggling with.

Could you do a video on ASD and internal sensations. My son is nearly 6 and he's still not toilet trained. He's verbal, very smart, can do the typical large motor skills of his age (hop, climb etc.... ) though not particularly adeptly at some, but he claims he can't feel when he needs to poo. He doesn't poo in his u derpants at school though, which seems to indicate control. My husband's doctor thinks it's because my son is tense at school but relaxes when he's out of school.... but he seems relaxed at school, he definitely enjoys school. Do you have any insights? (I know it's a delicate subject.)

I'm on the spectrum and unnatural disaster has it spot on.
One other thing to note, I understand that a LOT of people with ASD have GI issues. (I am gluten and lactose intolerant.) This may also impact the issues with control. I found as a child that I had MAJOR issues with IBS. Looking back and taking the autism into account there were probably a few factors:
      - interoreception
      - intolerances to food
      - stress (this is a major thing and will cause GI issues even now)
      - sensory input overloads (trying to mask in a crowd, too much noise, in a whirl and you don't see/feel other stuff)
Try using HALT. I can't remember who I stole it from but before you do something are you Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. (You can also use angry as emotionally upset and tired as thirsty because they can feel similar.) I found it good for actually identifying "Yes, I'm tired, yes I need to go to bed."
If he can identify those, it will help him identify other sensations EG needing the loo.
By the way, your husband's doctor is wrong. Unless they're on the spectrum, they have no clue. I've been there and got the T shirt.

    • @Fyr35555

Not sure how any heavy metal is relevant in autism since its a developmental disorder? And less women are diagnosed because the diagnosis criteria are outdated and they are often able to mask behaviours.

It speaks to it in that Mercury toxicity and Autism share many symptoms. I know that you’re speaking about the official narrative. I’m suggesting that Mercury may play a roll in many illnesses and diseases. Sad that, because of legal liabilities, it’s being avoided. But I’m not alone I my opinion. People have improved their symptoms through detoxing. I should think people would be interested in possible remedies? 💜

Why do you continue to use terms like high functioning when they are harmful and inaccurate? Genuinely asking as a fellow autistic person. I understand your older content and that I believe Asperger's is still used in your country but these terms have widely been criticzed by the general autistic community because they are harmful and/or inaccurate. So I'm just confused why you continue to use them while trying to educate people that likely don't know anything about autism and will take what you say to heart and possibly use it to spread misinformation.
