Hey, thank you so much for this information! I'm trying to gear up for my first time salmon fishing on Lake Michigan and these videos are tremendously helpful in figuring out what I need to do!
I've just got to say Thank You for all the time you've put into these great tutorial videos. Probably the most practical and helpful information I have found searching for exactly these topics. Your videos are excellent from the content to the production. Nice job! I have been fishing for many years but just bought my first "salmon boat". Last weekend I drove from mid-Michigan to Appleton, Wisconsin to look at a 1992 19' Starcraft Superfisherman 190. It was an amazing deal and everything checked out so I bought it and towed it back home with my Subaru Outback. The boat has a Merc 135 Black Max, Big Jon downriggers, Traxtech track, rod holders, Minn Kota Terrova TM, a 9" Garmin Echomap and a 7" Lowrance Elite, many, many other extras. I'm really excited but now I have to get some gear together. I have been fishing inland lakes for Bass and other species but I've got no real trolling stuff. Thanks to your videos I already know what rods, reels and tackle to purchase to get myself started. I'm planning on doing some solo outings this year on Lakes Michigan and Huron. That could be a good video for you: "Single handed trolling tips and techniques." My biggest worries are landing a good size fish by myself while keeping the boat moving in a safe direction with 2 other lines out. Anyway, sorry for the long winded comment here. haha Take care and keep the videos coming.

Great video explaining the set up clearly, but I fish from a 9 foot inflatable, so I struggle to see how I would net a fish on a 20 foot leader. At least it has saved me buying a dipsy diver and learning afterwards, so thanks for that.
@@PecheurAnglais we hand line our fish to the net but you don’t need to do that. Just run a leader length the same as your rod length and you’re good to go.
Just echoing everyone else, Thank You for helping this fly fishing guy get started!!! You're a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all you put out. Dreamweaver is making a killing off you/me LOL!!
How do you land a fish with a long leader. I have a 17.5 ft Lund fisherman and there wouldn’t be enough room to handle a leader that length. I like to use a leader as long as my rod so it’s easier to net the fish. I’m interested in trying slide divers to be able to run longer leaders.
I run my leaders the length of my rod i catch plenty of fish on my dipsys no need to have it any longer for the simple reason of netting the fish is easy. i fish by myself aot and or with my girlfriend and i end up reeling in the big kings and netting them myself you cant do that with a 15 + ft leader. I run 10 ft dipsy rods.
Another very informative video Chris!!! A few questions for ya. What are the two holes on the back of the flasher for?? I see a bunch of you guys run wire!! Do you need special rods for that? I would think wire would cut through your eyelets on the pole like braid over time does. Ever use the Slide Diver where you don't have to worry about leader length when landing a fish?? Thanks!
The two back holes can be used to vary the action of the fly behind the flasher. Each flasher usually has information on it. For wire I use Okuma Convector Pro wire rods. They have stainless steel eyelets which keeps the wire from cutting in. I use slide divers at different times throughout the season. I have a few videos on this channel showing how to use them and set them up.
When you attach your braided line to the dipsy, do you tie it directly to it or do you attach a snap swivel or something like that to take it off the dipsy without having to re-tie it everytime? Thanks!
Hey I appreciate your work w this channel! I’ve learned a lot! I’ve watched most of them I think lol. Question- In one of the vids you mentioned the fish hawk discounted. Black Friday is coming up again and I was wondering if that sale may return this year? Hoping so!! Pls lmk. TIA
You have great timing. Tangled Tackle just started a FishHawk sale today. Call the shop at 231-887-4242 and inquire. It’s only going on for a couple of days so don’t wait.
Probably missing something but, if you are running a dipsy, then 18' of leader, then the tackle, how are you getting this 25' of gear close to the boat to net the fish?
Great video! I'm on the other side of the border fishing Lake Huron. What length would you suggest from the flasher to a spoon? Any Info would be appreciated. Thanks!
But...But...the dipsy will stop retrieval of line/fish and you're left with 18 ft. + of distance to the fish. How do you get the fish in the boat ? Do you have a net w an 18 ft. handle ?
Hello Chris thank you so much for this video Really appreciate it I'm from grand rapids , I wonder when an where will be a good place & time to go fishing in lake Michigan ? North or south ?
I’m surprised at the length of the leader. 18 feet??? Do you get the fish close and then bring the fish in hand lining to the boat? If I used anything longer than 9 feet I would not be able to net a fish without bringing it in by hand.

That’s correct.

Love it and subbed. Just getting into the game. Why clinch knot at 1 end and palomar at other of leader?
Ease. You can do a palomar knot to the snubber but your loop has to be bigger to accommodate the extra material of the snubber.

Not with spoons or plugs but definitely with flies. KRW Flies makes a triple fly rig just for that purpose. Great set up.

2.0 to 2.2. Lake Michigan.
Hi Chris
Would you still use the 11-12 foot leader for a deep diver in a small boat?
It would depend if you have someone to have line it in. I’ve found that the longer leaders do produce more fish.
thanks for the tips.
New follower here from WNY and greatly appreciate your videos they're very informative. I have a question, what length and action trolling rod will work best for dipsies And planer boards ? Your recommendation. Thank You.
Low divers are nine feet. High divers are 10 feet and lead core, copper and rigger rods are all 8'6".
8.5 to 10 feet. If you're fishing solo, two 8.5 ft rods works fairly well, one on each side. With more rods, some variety in lengths helps.
Do you hand over hand the last 20 feet? Your salmon will be 20 in back of the Diver.
That’s exactly what we do.
How do you get it in the net with such long leaders? Don’t the dipsy block the line?
