Invented right in my home port of Sheboygan. Albright knot end of the wire to 18’ of braid then 6’ of 30lbs mono behind the slide diver. Can run em shallow or snap on the mag kit and run them instead of mag dipsys
I have been using slide divers for Lake Ontario trout and Salmon for years . I find a lot of the dipsy rods are to stiff . My favorites are 10 ft Eagle Claw Starfire . Med action . I use 80 # braid albright knot to 50 ft of 30# big game mono ( both fiod for flea control) , the diver sliides on that . Then a bead , swivel and 6 fr of 15 or 20# flouro . Works great and catch a ton of fish on it . I find mono has to much stretch ao i like the braid . I have 4 setups . I small diver for up to 40 ft down 1 reg size dor down to 60 ft . And 2 reg size with depth rings good to 75 fr or so. Landed many big kings on these setups .
Chris, with braid as my backer, how much 30lb mono do I add to the braid? Is the slide diver then clamped down on the braid verses the mono? Thanks for all your help, you are fantastic and extremely knowledgeable / helpful to this new fisherman!!
I know Im asking randomly but does someone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
Hi Chris, on the diver, you put the rubber on the arm. The directions show to thread it on the line and the arm will pinch it down. Does it make a difference?
Good class. I run slide divers with the 7oz weight upgrade and the ring (called the performance ring) as my high divers on a 5 setting. I let out the slide diver slowly on the 40’ shelf in Frankfort and it was 140’ of line out to get the diver skipping on bottom. So a 3.5 to 1 ratio is accurate for the big ring and weight on a 5 setting. Slide diver does not have tables completed for the performance ring with the 7oz weight.
You say that rod is a medium heavy in the narration, but at 2:54 as you're saying it and showing the specs of it, it says 8'6" 2M, which I'm pretty sure means 2 piece medium power. Just a minor note for anyone watching and wanting to replicate this setup. I use medium-heavy for "dipsy" divers, which are a bit different and pull pretty hard. But I've read that these slide divers don't pull like that, so if that is the case, a medium power rod would be fine. Either way, thanks for the video and the info - I am looking at trying these and need knowledge!
Chris, we also have the green mono. Just to be clear, can I use that green mono with a 6 ft fluorocarbon leader? Or is that green mono not stealthy enough. Right now our reels are fully loaded with the green.
Very good informational tip on slid divers, I have tried the lite bite kit as well... still trying to tweak the trigger release....I like the 100' of mono. for the slide. I need to spend more time perfecting the method for sure. Would you consider doing laker set ups including whirly gigs?
Great videos, you need heat in that shed! Couple of things I would add. 1. there is no need to have any more than a short lead after the last swivel, 6' or 7' is way over kill, 2'--3' is all you need, one of the main benefits of using slide divers if you do not need the long lead. Makes it much easier to bring fish close enough to net. 2. If you are spending money on slide divers get the light bite version. You will not regret it, and they can be set tight or lose, so they can be used for everything. 3. there is no need for a small swivel between the backer and the 100' of mono, just tie the line together with a suitable knot (depends on what lines you are joining) 4. for even easier storage you can add a clasp at the end of the 100' of mono (after the diver), that way you can remove the short lead, to make it easier to put the rod away. Cheers from Canada
Like I’ve always said, this is just my way of doing things. These setups have put many fish in our boat so I’ll stick with this system, but I appreciate the input. I’ve used the lite bite version and found myself drift back to the original. Lite bites felt over engineered to me and I’m a fan of less moving parts equals less problems. But, again, there is no wrong way. The best way is what the particular angler has confidence in.
@@tangledtacklefishing Small swivel between the backer and the 100' of mono. Had dipsy diver twist main line then go in to spin unnoticed while trolling. Eventually 40lb line simply snapped on its own loosing dipsy. In case when diver tangles and spins or using wire - mono this swivel is a must.
This is the best video about slide divers. I am new to this tehnique but learned a lot just from watching Chris. What brand is your rod? I am trying to buy a dipsy diver rod but people have really split opinion about the rod length and I now understand why. I would like to buy rod similar to yours, 8’5” MH. Much appreciated and thank you.
It's an Okuma White Diamond. The shop is out of stock right now on that rod but here is another that would comparable. tangledtacklecompany.com/collections/diver-rods/products/okuma-big-lake-tournament-series-dipsey-rod-90-blt-dd-902mh-medium-heavy
Loved the video, I’m a slide diver lite bite guy myself. I have 50 lb braid to a fluorocarbon leader that’s 9’ long. I feel like after watching the video I might not be stealthy enough with the 9’ fluorocarbon to braid. What do you think?
If you're catching fish consistently then I wouldn't touch a thing, but if you're not then I would think about some experimentation. The 100 feet of mono gives you a great amount of space to move your slide diver around and dial it in for better bites.
I have and I found myself going back to the original. But that’s just me and I’m an advocate of sticking with what you have confidence in no matter which system you use.
Do you use the medium rod with success? You say medium heavy is better but the rod in the video is medium. I have a spare medium Diawa wilderness trolling rod just got my first slide diver. Not sure if it'll handle it
With slide divers I mostly run plugs and spoons, but you can certainly run anything you want. You may have to adjust your arm tension to keep it from tripping.
Great video, 1 when you look at the back of the boat your left would be port and right would be starboard in a manner of speaking. lol 2 if people would set up two rods exactly the same except for a 6ft leader, one with mono and the other with floro, and keep a tally of strikes and fish for each line they had all summer or a full week of fishing they can find out which may be better. But then who will remember this come fishing time lol
@@tangledtacklefishing Thank you for your answer, really appreciate it. Do you have a tip for me which rod I could/should buy? if I buy a new rod for it, it should at least fit perfectly ;-)
You are taking about the lite bite slide divers which, in my opinion, are more suited for walleye and smaller fish. I used the standard slide divers without the lite bite arm.
so on the main line from the reel theres a swivel then a 100ft leader and the diver then another leader to the hook I gather, how can you reel a fish in as when reelin in the swivel eventually reaches the rod end and you still have 100 ft of leader out there unless you are suggesting that you just keep reelin in with the swivel passing through the rod eyes cant see that think I missed something a drawing would have made it clearer thanks though
Why not eliminate the 100' mono leader and just use clear mono main line to a 6 foot leader? Wouldn't you still be able to set the slide diver back as far as you want?
Because we run slide divers on mono. There’s a lot of stretch already in mono and more is not necessary. If you run slide divers on wire or braid, then you’d need a snubber.
I switched from the slide diver to NFN (NoFishNick) version wit the s clips and modified it with no swivels. Been a couple seasons now and no failures and like it. Look him up on here (YT) he also has good tips like Chris does.
Is there anyone making trolling flies using mono instead of fluorocarbon? Let me know please. I’m starting a trolling fly business and was wondering. I’ve used both and catch just as much with both. Would starting out making trolling flies using mono hurt me as to say selling? Let me know….
To each their own personly ive noticed better hook up with floro and i used mono for years until recently when the fish cant see floro was told to me by n ol timer i switched and seem b catching more

stretchy mono thats the key for landing mr big. braid wire copper even flouro doesn't stretch enough and wind up straightening hooks and lost fish

That micro swivel between your backer and 100’ mono line reels through your reel’s line guide ok?
Absolutely no problem. You can also use a double uni knot at that junction.

How many LBS should the rod have at least for the Slide Diver Lite Bite? Is 12 - 20 enough?
That should be fine. Try to get one in a MH.

You are taking about the lite bite slide divers which, in my opinion, are more suited for walleye and smaller fish. I used the standard slide divers without the lite bite arm.
I must have a different type of Slide Diver because it has a trip lever on the back of it. I still have not used it as it seems so complicated.
That’s a lite bite version. I don’t use those.
@@tangledtacklefishing Don't feel bad. I've had mine for 5 years and I still haven't used it but once

What pound test mico swivel 35 or 75 ?
Why not eliminate the 100' mono leader and just use clear mono main line to a 6 foot leader? Wouldn't you still be able to set the slide diver back as far as you want?
Because the six foot leader will get nicks and cuts and I just replace that section.
How come you don’t need a stubber for a slid diver?
Because we run slide divers on mono. There’s a lot of stretch already in mono and more is not necessary. If you run slide divers on wire or braid, then you’d need a snubber.

20 pound Big Game or Suffix smoke.

Question, can you run these on your main line? Do you have to use leader?
You can run them on the main line. The leader keeps it from sliding down to the lure.

Absolutely.
