Thank you Campbell Rice!!! for showing us your road techniques. I despise using drywall compound as its difficult to work with. I am going to try doing a parking lot for an industry with cardstock and simple spray paint.
Loved this episode of What's Neat. Campbell Rice's roads, now that's neat! i'm going to try this method. Beauty of it is if you make a mistake it's not down, attached to the layout yet, so no mess to existing scenic work already done. I did miss the usual drone footage but keep up the great work Ken, you rock.

Thanx for sharing your experiences in modelling, Ken, it's appreciated more than I can express. I sorta rely on these kind of how-tos bc covid has rendered my memories of how-tos insufficient to be effective...it's been months since i've been at a meet or show. Can't wait to start going again!! In the meantime, just know it's channels and people, like yourself, who are ridiculously generously sharing with us, so we all can stay updated on..."what's neat" in our favorite hobby!!
Especially appreciate the spotlight on the rolling stock inventory readers! That will keep my conceptual phase N scale modules computerized and especially updated for future show connectivities with others who wish to simplify those tasks vs using the "tried 'n true card method" of 70 some-odd years ago!! [Great for backup- in case of a power failure- not so much moving forward with DCC & no power failures!! 😉😎] And THAT was VERY NEAT!!

Love the Campbell Rice segment on roads. I do mine fairly similar except I use Sheet Styrene and I'll mist in some black with various tones of gray and white. I also usually spray yellow or white where the lines will be first, mask them off, they spray may gray base with mists of other colors afterwards. Never tried the alcohol trick (need to try that in the future), but I do use the chalks as well. Great episode as usual!
What a neat video! The Brad Slone bridge..looks so realistic! What an outstanding job! Then you have the..RFID Card System by Carlton Brown. It's neat but need more info! Last but not least..Campbell Rice & his roads! I need to try this out! Oh yeah, love the MoPac banner hanging up in your "Train Cave" How cool is that!! Great taste in railroad's...my friend! great video! definitely use that for the roads on my layout. Especially for sharp uphill streets and hilly roads.
Great video and easy way to create roads with solid weathering. I will definitely try it out and you made it so easy-love it!!
It also leads to thought on designing a weathered road in a photo app, like Photoshop with all of the details and in scale and printing it out on colored stock paper. In essence, the heavy lifting on the design front would be done on a computer and you can control and add all of the detail of the road.

Ken can you do a segment on how you clean the dust off that huge locomotive collection on the shelfs?
Yes. I did a What's Neat Video on just that subject making a special brush for the vacuum cleaner. I don't remember what month or year. There is a special index on all the WN videos since 2012. I will look it up and do a follow up post. Any one out there know the answer is welcome to help me with this. I will say a paint brush and vacuum works the best as it is gentle on the fine details as it cleans. KP

Amazing road Campbell has done. I will have to try that that when I get to that stage of my layout. One comment though. Your road would not have so many cracks to be filled if Mike Budde would slow down for that the school zone when he is test driving all those Camaros and other incredible cars.

arthurhouston3 i tried to get it going but could not find out how to complete it. I would hir build and it would always say error. Could you do a how to set up and use the jmri ops? Otherwise im doing car card routing system since i am in a tuesday night ops group and most of the gentleman use cars card and waybills. I have gotten used to that method. Daniel

Btw: Ken, have you seen LUKE TOWAN's "Boulder Creek Railroad" how-tos on youtube? He's Austrailian and VERY talented. He has one video that's VERY NEAT: it's how to build an RC H.O. Range rover from a commercially available kit!! It is just...to die for!! You gotta check it out!! It brings any HO layout or diorama completely to life!!!

Just tried to find the KwikStripe tape and it seems that Great Planes is no longer making that product. I was not able to find any white or yellow using the typical Google search. Any substitute for the 1/16th wide KwikStripe?
Hi Ken, another excellent "how-to" video along with some great outdoor shots which you do so professionally. I loved the step-by-step of Campbell's paper road making. He took the time with each step which I found really beneficial. Thank you. I do have one question: How do you align a series of the "watercolor" sheets to the breaks don't appear obvious? In other words, how do you get the match-up without apparent seams? Again, well done and greatly appreciated. - Dean from Minnesota

I made it easy, print it on an common paper and glued down with white glue at mix50/50 with water
I have talked with some people who use that flex seal paste out of the bucket do make roads.

Nice roadproject. But why not download a couple of pictures of roads from google. Print it to your scale and there you go a new road with cracks, patches and lines. Works like a charm. Try that also on roofs. Weathered and nice. Thanks !
What pastels did he use on the roads, perfect round and easy to use
I use pan pastels that I got from scenic express
well for N scale it may faster just cut that paper to size and run it threw a printer. =p Thanks for showing us your technique. I wish I had a G scale layout cause that Jupiter Engine looks awesome.

I do my roads using a standard printer / scanner. My sidewalks are cut with my laser on 1/32" taskboard.
Is there anything else you can use other than paving tape
Hi, I just watched this video on "What's Neat," and am interested in the idea of using this paper for my roadways. I do have a question. I was hoping that you would show how you connect pieces of roadway together for a long section of road. Thank you, Andy K
What model manufacturer makes the model of the southern 4501? In the Johnny cash hurt music video he was running that locomotive and I think it would be neat to model that on my layout

How to stripe a curved road?
How do you attach the paper to the layout for the roads? Particularly the adhesive.
I use elmers spray glue. Spray it to the back of the road and stick it to my foam and weight it down.
