Geo Prizm High Idle: Thermostat Replacement

  • I just got a 1997 Geo Prizm off a friend of mine. It had a high idle and the temperature gauge was not really getting up to its optimal temperature. It would hover around the quarter mark even after driving around for an hour. The engine was probably not getting hot enough to trigger the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve into a low idling mode. Replacing the thermostat took care of the problem. Thanks for watching.

    I had exactly the same problem. The temperature fell while driving at a constant speed, say, 40-50 mph. I opened it and the thermostat was disintegrated. Now the temperature is at an optimal range (1/4-3-8, can get to 1/2 in a very hot day), and it doesn't fall on highway driving. The idle is perfect right now :)

    I have a 1995 with the same engine. This is the same procedure for that year as well.Taking the air filter cover off was so much easier to get the bolts for the thermostat.

    That's a good question! I suppose it's about the diagnosis. The thermostat replacement worked in my case to fix the high idle. The problem could be elsewhere, for example a sticky idle air control valve.

    This is a very helpful video, now I believe I will be able to change the thermostat on my 1997 Geo Prizm. And mine too is white!! Thanks for posting your video.

    I drive a 95 corolla pretty much the same basic features as the geo prism...my problem is that according to a mechanic that checked my car the other day is the thermostat remained close hence why it overheated on the freeway. Will replacing that and the radiator and water pump fix my problem?

    If you don’t replace thermostat will it cause problems for the car?

    • @CactusNaga
      @CactusNaga  Год назад

      I would think so. The engine is not operating at its best temperature and the fuel mixture is always too rich. That can cause carbon build-up inside the cylinders as well as overload the catalytic converter. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    did u have plastic reservoir full too when tryna get air bubbles out when u refiled the radiator with the cap off......or does it even matter

    • @CactusNaga
      @CactusNaga  7 лет назад

      Hello again. It does not really matter at that time whether the overflow reservoir is filled or not. The radiator cap is off and this puts the reservoir out of the loop.

    Thanks for the video. Question: Why do shops charge so much if the work is that "simple"?

      Labor costs can vary quite a bit depending on where you are located. I'd say the typical would be between 100 to 200. Thanks for watching.
