Just to point out, you need to push the air bubbles out only if you are injecting directly into a vein. With what Ellie was doing it isn't a big danger.
I hopped into chat at this point just to make this point. For intramuscular or subcutaneous injections, it really doesn't matter, and doing the tap-tap-press to remove air just wastes medicine.
Still can hit a blood vessel, with intramuscular injections. Obviously aspirate it. Anyway I was shocked stuck it right in Joel's liver wtf. Surprised Hollywood even put a deep wound there, definitely be dead of toxicity in the blood stream or hypovolemia.
@@drach420 out of curiosity, do you work in medicine? because it was my understanding that this isn't supposed to be a subcutaneous injection. it's just sort of a "movie medicine" kind of moment. it's actually supposed to be infused over a period of 20-30 minutes intravenously.
I came back to say from everything I've found, it can be given subcutaneously, but not at high doses and to me--that looked like a high dose as she didn't appear to be mixing it.
@@stephmgreen I do not work in medicine. I'm repeating something my instructor said during my wilderness first responder training, when we were learning to load and administer syringes intramuscularly and subcutaneously. He was a PA at the time in addition to being a wilderness EMT. He stressed that the dangers of air bubbles are over-dramatized in film and tv, and moreover they really only matter if injected directly into the bloodstream. He said that if you're administering a subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, as long as you're not actively trying to fill it up with air, you're probably good without needung to stress about tiny bubbles. As always, don't take medical advice or training from a RUclips comment yada yada.
Re: the injection itself in the show -- yeah, she was basically injecting it directly into his abdomen, which would not be appropriate. You'd probably stick that in the muscle in the fleshy part of the butt or the hip. They accurately depicted an untrained teenager having no idea what she's doing.
@@drach420 lol, I know. I have basic medical training/knowledge but I know I to not to take advice from RUclips. I was just curious as you were commenting with utter confidence. This is true-but the air in those syringes can be marginally uncomfortable for the injectee. Not that it’s a major concern, but if you have the time, it’s best practice to keep them air-free. Especially because it just creates a good habit-but that’s more so for people working with intravenous injections/infusions as well. But everything you were taught was accurate. As far as intravenous injections go, it is dangerous, but it’s a matter of volume AND the rate of injection. It likely wouldn’t cause an air embolism if she had pushed it through an IV either just by what I could glean from the syringe they showed. That being said, obviously don’t take my advice either lol. This is still RUclips.
Now I'm curious if the Bella haters are still haters at this point. God I'm obsessed with them now! Can't get enough of Bella content. Can't wait to hear them sing in the show too. This show hurts my heart but can't stop watching it
I literally saw a comment the other day saying they thought the Ellie in the show "hard to look at", so yeah there are still disgusting haters
@@Henrique-wv9xq really?!!! Well fuck em, and I really hope they get all the more miserable when Bella gets all the awards
@Rick King 22 they/them = Bella = non-binary, her preferred pronouns.
I do hope they sing and play the guitar in the show just like in the game.
Wait, there are people that dislike Bella's performance?!
@@newsoulsam3889 there were fans of the game who were against Bella being cast as Ellie from the moment it was confirmed. There were also those who said they weren't impressed by her performance. Guess they had their minds set on not liking her no matter what
20:46 I counted 10 strikes. 21:28 this is the moment Joel earned the title: PapaJoel.
David was creepy as fuck and Ellie showed off her badassery what a wild episode
Another low point for Ellie and a turning point for her. Here the animal in Ellie came out with her overkill and the experience she had to make. Almost r*p*d and eaten. Here she experiences for the first time the worst abysses in man. I think if you've seen Ellie's past reactions to losses, there wasn't much anger involved. She swallowed Sam's death completely. Here in her outburst really everything came out, which was not seen before.
There is no way back for her. She will not be the same anymore. The episode is also important for the future. It shows what Ellie is capable of. A dark side in her that people like David recognize.
I also think it's cool that the torture scene actually showed us explicitly how Joel has proceeded over the last 20 years. This was the first time it was really shown why everyone was afraid of Joel in episode 1.
A nice Tess callback from Ellie in the conversation with David.
"Your (our) luck had to run out sooner or later." were Tess's words shortly before she had shown him her bite.
The father of the girl Joel killed will always be with her. I'm sure she enjoyed the meal. That's macabre. 😁
And here is Troy Baker (Game Joel) in a not so small role as David's henchman James. You can even hear Joel out of his voice from time to time.
I also didn't think that one day I would have to see Ellie kill Joel.
The reason why no one notices the burning house is probably because the weather outside just sucks and everyone is in their houses.
"When you are lost in the darkness, look for the light"
Joel who lives in the (his) darkness has found the light in Ellie. At the same time, she loses hers through him and the world he shows her.
There will be another big timejump. At the beginning of the next episode they will already be in Salt Lake City. Also, we'll see Ashley Johnson, who was Ellie in the game.
I mean, in regard to there not being infected in this episode, I would imagine any infected outside in the weather portrayed would be completely frozen and harmless, if not straight up dead. That leaves only the infected inside buildings that are still in good enough condition to stay warm enough to survive in, which after 20 years of sitting at ambient temperatures would probably be very far and few between. Finally, the town itself where the cannibals reside was likely cleared of infected ages ago. So I'm not surprised that we don't see any "zombies"
The tapping the syringe isn't to prevent air from getting in the person.. it's to make sure the volume reads correct. Injecting air into someone won't kill them.. in fact it's mostly completely harmless, unless it's a lot of air.
If you inject into muscle you're pretty ok, and Ellie would probably be fine here, but if you inject directly into the bloodstream bubbles can do extensive damage and kill. Probably wouldn't happen here, but I'm not down to risk it
If I were a rich man I'd buy you guys two multipoint wireless headphone sets because I worry you're not getting all of that glorious sound design.
P.S. another great relatable reaction as always.
P.P.S. The best salami I've ever had was from horse imported from Italy.
What's even more unsettling is the fact that David was a teacher before the outbreak happened...so he was already a creep before he doubled-down on it and went the Jesus route for the apocalypse 🤮
Please forgive my novel I'm about to write.....this is my favorite episode of the season, however dark & disturbing, second only to Episode 3. David was one sick individual, I hate this guy. Again, I’m not a gamer but right away, I found David to be a little off. There he was quoting scripture when he was the last person who should be holding that bible. I got a wicked bad vibe from him & his congregation. They all looked so meek, quiet & unhealthy looking. David however; did not. When he slapped Hannah, you could tell her mom was pissed but David seemed so controlling & cruel. We find out so much more so later on. When he said he was a teacher to kids Ellie’s age, big red flag, huge! Was this town a real town of like-minded people or a cult? Felt very culty. I don’t understand why they were all listening to him. Obviously, some of the guys questioned his motives. Enough about him.
Ellie was truly one of a kind here. She has learned so much! Talk about girl power! She saved herself! She can track, she can shoot better, she can sneak up on people & she took the ammo out of their guns, she’s so smart! I was so scared for her & just knew nothing good was going to come of these guys. That ear reveal, so creepy. Joel was amazing! He was so out of it tho, I was shocked to see him up & around. I’m sure part of it was adrenaline but maybe a little unrealistic but I don’t care, I’ll allow it. He did say he was a determined person, yeah no shit right! I honestly don’t know where he found the strength. And when he went into the meat locker, yikes! 3 hanging bodies & the horse. Talk about creepy! When he called her baby girl, I lost it.
I have no idea what next week will bring but this show needs to be winning all the awards!
For acting, writing, set design, sound design, editing, sound mixing, directing, all of it! End of major rant....
Joel is at 1 percent of his total power and it ripping through guys like he's an Assassin's Creed main charachter.
With his smarts at 1000% coz he needed to rescue Ellie, they never stood a chance at so litlle effort... coz they were dumb 😬
The Next to Last of Us.
I see what you did there
FYI: The actor you hate so much who says maybe it's gods will voiced Joel in the video games...
Edit: Okay I see now you knew that when ellie killed him
Great reaction. I’m curious, you mention the game does a better job of explaining why no one comes out as the fire is happening. What is that storyline? 21:43
Possibly just you playing as Joel and splashing everyone
"That gun is so large". "Yeah, and they're a very tiny person". Ellie in the show is a she/her. Respect that.
ooo god , now you sorry hahaha
Can’t believe Ellie killed Joel this episode
Cutting out the baby girl line 🥹
Clarus she's like a funny beautiful little elf
Who knew the “frustrated cannibal” joke was actually a foreshadow 🤷🏻♂️😆
Omg 😂😱
gamers lol
Bella Ramsey deserves every award. Dude the fact that David is even more fucked up than in the game.
Agreed!
I thought his voice in the game was more creppy but thats just me
@@OhyeahMrKrabz that's the point!! Normal looking people sometimes are the worst. Look at Kathleen, the show runners does it for purposes.
The added information of him being a teacher before the apocalypse just opens all sorts of horrifying possibilities as to what he did in his past. Because his line to Ellie about how the best part is the fight they put up means he's done this repeatedly and probably even before everything went to hell.
@@mst3KGf EXACTLYYYY!! To me it was more disturbing because in the game it’s always implied that he wants to “BE” with Ellie but here he explicitly says it. God and Bella’s scream really sent chills down my spine
I picked up on the possibility of cannibalism from the very beginning, talking about the dead dad being buried in the spring.
I live where we actually do that when necessary. And often families opt to have bodies frozen for the winter; for a summertime funeral.
and when they talked about how much they had left, 'venison, elk, rabbit' was code for male, female and child.
This episode is the ultimate "Do you know where your food comes from?" PSA.
well, it WAS locally sourced....
I think David can tell Ellie is a natural leader because he knows Joel is sick and with her size and age, she took the initiative to go hunting and seek resources, and held her own with grown men, rather than remain helpless letting fate run its course. Let's be honest, how many people would fold under those circumstances?
I know you have to cut down the video because youtube but how could y'all cut out when Joel finds Ellie?
I was absolutely shocked that you didn't show the part where Joel finally completely lets down his guard and calls Ellie his babygirl
Had to make room for that "bad day" joke

@@yohanespaskal9352 It's a job
Wait I'm about to watch... really? ._.
@@Saphthings yes. I was really surprised and kind of disappointed
Best Line in the show, and you ommited it. Joel to Elle: "It's ok babygirl." Brings me to tears all the time,..... then the strength with which she hugs him. Ya, just remebering it, I am ugly-crying.
The performances in this show have carried it. I can't think of a single actor who gave an inadequate performance. They are all great.
This episode had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Bella deserves an Emmy for her incredible performance
They absolutely do! They've been unreal this whole season
She deserves an emmy? Nah she deserves like 15 emmys
@@NerdyNightly does Bella go by they/them? I was unaware of that
@@iczorro I read an article where Bella talks about being nonbinary and said that the pronouns don’t matter as much to them. “I’m very much just a person. Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.” This is a quote from them in an article published by Distractify.
@Amy Sinyard I saw that same article, or perhaps the quote from Teen Vogue.
7:32 Note the size of David's platter compared to the others. 13:43 Episode 1 Tess told Joel that Robert is terrified of Joel. This is why.
Nerdy should rewatch the episode. The cannibalism was referred to from the get-go. Why was the girl crying and wanting her father buried in an early scene? Why did the cook ask what the meat was? (The stag hadn't been dressed yet.) Etc.
There was lots of foreshadowing and framing to make the audience uneasy and allowed for the possibility of cannibalism, but according to David, only him and a couple others even knew they were eating humans. While it's possible he was lying, it doesn't seem to fit his MO to lie about that. He was trying to convince Ellie to join him and that she was special to him. That he would have told her what was going on even though he didn't tell the others.
The statements of the girl asking about her father and the cook asking for the origins of a meat are normal enough without them thinking about cannibalism. Especially the cook, why would she ask at all if she knew already. And in a earlier scene when James and David are accounting for supplies they specifically talk about deer and rabbits when they are talking about food stocks. Not much need to lie about it if everyone knows, although it could just be a euphemism for vanity.
And at the same time the congregation in David's town... Being so low and vacant... That could be the demoralization if knowing they are cannibals... Or just resignation and desperation.
I don't think we're given enough info honestly to definitely say if everyone knew or not.
@@Nomadic813 Exactly, and I think the ambiguity is what makes this episode so good. Once again I'm not only impressed by how the show manages to add these details and make a story that was already great even better, I'm also impressed at how thoroughly people will analyze each episode so they can find every last detail
@@Nomadic813 There is an implication that some of them know or suspect what is going on but are in denial or too afraid of David to say it outloud. The children probably do not know but women probably do, especially if they are married to the men who go out and bring in the "venison".
@@przemekkozlowski7835 I like that. Very likely I think as well. A lot of, don't ask don't tell happening.
The butcher's delivery of that "Venison..." line immediately raised red flags for my GF and I. (Morgan Freeman voice: "It was not venison.")
David was the most terrifying “ monster” of the season.
Joel at 10% will destroy you.
This was Bella’s Emmy submission. They were PHENOMENAL.
Great commentary as always! But I was bummed you didn't show your reaction to the big payoff -- the hug, and Joel saying, "Baby girl, I've got you. I've got you." Aghghhg. (sniffle)
Terrific episode, and Bella and Pedro were incredible. I would also note that the reason the townspeople don't come running is (1) the kitchen/dining complex is a separate building and they had all just had mealtime fairly recently; (2) the henchmen were all off searching for Joel; and (3) the fire had been started for about 3-5 minutes tops, so it's understandable that people off in their own separate buildings might not realize it right away.
I agree that I don't mind the lack of Infected -- the show is about more than that, and it's trying to be more than a play-by-play of the game. Great commentary as always!
Honestly that line didn't get me as much as the simple "It's Me" and her realization that he really was there. I didn't tie in his relationship with his daughter immediately there.
@@NerdyNightly Shame!....Shame!.....Shame!!
Jk 🙂
@@NerdyNightly Aw, not even Ellie's "He...", as she couldn't even articulate a sentence? Guess I'm going for Patreon then

Another amazing episode. I'm sad there's only one episode left.
right?! Sepanx has already started. Maybe 2yrs till season2? They just confirmed and probably haven't started on anything yet 😬
Given the end of the game is a lot of fairly long bits of action, I think it should be possible to do well in a single episode if they trim it down to some smaller set pieces. Kinda like how in this episode they show Joel dealing with a few people instead of what happens in the game.
"... the original voice of Joel in the game..." and the host of the HBO Last of Us podcast
I love love love that podcast
Cannibalism was eluded to in the kitchen scene when Hanna's mother asked what sort of meat it was. Josiah hesitated before saying it was venison. That hesitation is what gave it away. So, in a way, cannibalism made an earlier "entry" than you thought!
I am not 100% sure of this, but I think that while the show is going through the winter months, the infected are being left out as the fungus doesn't do well in the cold. Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin seem to have updated the science of how cordyceps works to keep the show a little more real and believable.
You know it’s a shitty editing, when they cut out the Baby Girl line out, which was an emotional gut punch, and that was just one part that shouldn’t have been cut. Luckily, I’ve already watched the better channels.
My take on the episode is that this show has an ongoing theme on the human social need to belong to a greater group, and how far they will rationalize things and go in order to "belong" and let external sources become their moral compass instead of their own self.
Earlier it was Fedra, and trusting the "government" to decide what's right. Then Kathleen's "resistance" and the Fireflies, and trusting radical groups with one extreme agenda to dictate what's right. Then there's Jackson and the community, and thinking that "same" means "equal", when equality without equity isn't true equality at all. Jackson sounds nice and all, but the body's left around show it's not the best. And now here's religion and once again blind faith.
And every single time, people following Fedra with, "wherever you go, we're behind you", with Kathleen, with the fireflies, with Jackson, and now with the preacher. No accountability. Politicians, leaders, friends, it's like as soon as they're part of your social bubble they can do no wrong, and the person will follow them no matter what.
The only people in this show that end up doing well, or living longer and better are people like Bill, Frank, and the elderly couple an episode ago. Even between Bill and Frank, Bill was like, "Ok, help me understand why you need the paint". Even there he was like, "I need to understand so that I can agree with you". Basically if you think for yourself and make your own decisions instead of just "following" you have better odds of living better.
Human instinct is that it's safer in groups, which is often true for survival. But when you mistake the feeling of belonging for justice, morality, or anything other than what it is, it all goes downhill from there.
This episode was fking amazing. I need to play this game now.
PLAY IIIIT
It's so good!
This is the turning point in the game, you get to play Ellie, even though it's stupid hard to kill that deer
I picked up the hints about canibalism from the start. they did it super well, havnt played the game just a fan of cult movies. they really captured the shady cult vibe. especially with the new age tail shit.
The fact that david mentions he was a school teacher and taught kids Ellie’s age.. it’s absolutely terrifying to think how many children he must’ve sexually assaulted. He’s a man who uses his position of power to get what he wants and he clearly has done it his entire life.. TV show David was definitely more terrifying that video game David.
Joel called Ellie Baby Girl 😭
You skipped "I got you, baby girl" in the edit, and that's baffling to me. That's the emotional core of the episode.
Preview'd skipped when Ellie told David her name and I felt the same way. 🧐
Edit: So did this fuckin channel. 😠
@@Blinkptx chill dude
I just assumed that if anyone from the town showed up to check out the fire, they would have gone to the front of the steakhouse. Ellie and Joel being around back and walking to the water's edge would allow for the camera to not show anyone in the shot from the town that might have gathered.
"She's never seen snow before" 🤣 it snows practically 4-5 months a year in Boston
“We’ve eaten in that restaurant”.. I hope you didn’t order the “venison”…😮
I had horse steak, once. Tasted great. Can recommend.
I think it takes a lot of air to cause a problem with an injection, and it would have to be directly into a vein. Also i think needles have a gas release at the tip nowadays, but i might be wrong about all of this haha
I kind of think that the reason why there isn't really anyone infected is that Cordyceps doesn't work so well in snow and cold... in the first episode they talk about Cordyceps needing a high temperature....
Typically medication that needs to administered via syringe will have the route of administration labeled on the vial itself, so it would have been Ellie's best bet to had read the bottle for instructions; also I believe the penicillin she had would have likely been administered intravascularly (i.e. the vein) and not in the stomach which would be delivered in the subcutaneous tissue where meds like insulin typically go.
I’ve been just waiting for this notification to pop up ❤
For those that don't know, it's not illeagal to kill horse and sell their meat for consomption purposes in Canada. It's also very regulated by the federal SFCA, SFCR, the FDA, FDR and CFIA. If you go to Quebec, and order Chevaline, you will be eating horse.
6:10 really good reaction so far! Just to specify, an air bubble wont be harmful if you are just injecting something through the skin or into a muscle. It is mostly dangerous for people who routinely inject themselves for one reason or another as it can build up in your body if it isn't filtered by your lungs fast enough. So basically you CAN get a lethal dose of air but its like 100ml of air at once, not a stray micro bubble. And yes blood absolutely carries oxygen. But it carries it in the hemoglobin, not just in the bloodvessel/vein.

Your assessment about injections is apt, for injections given into a blood vessel. Unlike most medications, penicillen is administered into tissue, not dorectly to the blood stream, which is why 1. An air bubble woukd be minimal concern, and 2. Why Ellie administering it directly into the wounded area actually can work.
"Theres a secret door!? They found the best house!
Ellie pushed a piece of furniture in front of the door to the basement to hide it. That is *not* a "secret door"
Calling that a secret door is akin to calling the spare tire compartment in a car "a secret compartment" but worse, because at least the compartment in the car may have been intended to be "out of the way" with a panel laid over it.
@Nerdy Nightly,
Basashi in Kyushu, huh? You can eat in many places, though Kyushu's known for it. When where you here, Nerdy?
That's actually not true. It's a movie thing. I have our dog shots for a decade. We were never told to squirt a little out before giving the medicine.
I'm 90% sure that's a movie myth. Maybe an actual doctor or nurse can confirm or correct me.
“Joel needs a shot of whatever they put in Patrick mahomes ankle in the Super Bowl. “ 😂😂💀
You have to be injecting intravenously, I mean you mentioned blood stream so I'm assuming you meant that, but yeah, when injecting intravenously is when air bubbles can be fatal...

I never got interested in the Zombie Shooter game genre and so, never played the game upon which this series was based. I would imagine that the game includes fungus zombies attacking our intrepid travelers at fairly regular intervals in ever-increasing numbers. I don't really miss that in the TV series. I do question devoting an entire episode to the Bill and Frank story (no objection to the story, but it did nothing to advance the plot) and another whole episode to discovering the source and circumstances of Ellie being bitten by an infected. I don't object to including a flashback of the infected bite, just devoting an entire episode to providing the backstory. I do object to devoting two entire episodes (22% of the season) to situations which could be handled in ten minutes of screen time and then advancing the story with a simple super of "Three Months Later..." as though nothing happened during those three months and the relationship of our two protagonists did not change, develop, or evolve during the intervening three months.
I noticed that HBO/Max is streaming "Fringe," a 2009 series which ran for a handful of seasons - say, in the neighborhood of 100 episodes. The cast includes Anna Torv, recently seen in "The Last of Us" until her character's death in episode 2 or 3, and the wonderful actor John Noble. With TLOU winding up, you might be interested in adding "Fringe" to the rotation for reaction videos - assuming neither of you have already seen it. Actually, it probably wouldn't matter if you had seen it given it's age and the fact that you each have memories like Swiss cheese. The latter fact is demonstrated most Friday mornings during book club.
