- Join me, DiagnoseDan, as I tackle the challenge of diagnosing a BMW diesel that's throwing some puzzling EGR fault codes. In this episode, I walk you through every step, from verifying the initial complaint to the nitty-gritty of pinpointing the issue. While that check engine light might play hide and seek, the stored fault codes have a tale to tell. With a mix of technical know-how and a dash of humor, I'll show you the hurdles of dealing with an elusive EGR valve problem and the crucial role of a meticulous visual inspection. But here's the catch: what's really causing these fault codes? And how can you ensure the EGR valve is installed without a hitch? I've got the insights, but the final solution? Well, that's a secret you'll have to watch the video to uncover. Let's roll up our sleeves and diagnose it together!

You are armed with the knowledge and the right tools and you know how to use them! You would make a great weatherman I am sure.
🤣🤣Thanks!
I'm so glad I found your RUclips account a few years ago, everything you do seems so easy and professional. I work as an educator in car mechanics and sometimes I make my students watch some of your videos and answer questions, keep doing what you do! Best regards, Jake!
When the egr valve is open, the temperature of the exhaust gas will decrease. With a closed valve it Increases wich is necessary for the regeneration (around 600°c i believe)
Thanks for watching!
Exacta!
I was going to give grief over the security-torx, but the potential damage from improper installation makes sense.
Thanks man, Interesting those EGR valves.
When I bought my iQ in 2010 the EGR was draining from before the catalyst, from the exhaust. These were the then " older" model iQ's (till second half 2010) . After some strong discussion with Toyota Holland they replaced the EGR valve, that now was draining after the catalyst. All the newer models from second half 2010 had it in this way.
The older models had some problems due to the placement of the EGR valve. I think owners in England went to court about this. Cars would randomly stop having power and go in limp-mode.
After a lot of discussion here in Holland with Toyota, they exchanged the valve and catalyst. For free.
It has never been a recall action. Weirdly.
hi Dan, in answer to your question, to regen the DPF , it need to be heated about 600 degrees, and it would be done by injecting fuel ATDC ,it's like to make stroke in the DPF,so the EGR should be closed , to not cooling down Exhust temperature.
Love the bloopers, I have been putting them in my videos for several months now with positive results. They want to see that we are not perfect.
Thanks for watching!
Dan, I've been sitting around waiting for you to ask for help.
Next time Garth 😉
The best and most interesting technician on youtube , need more big dan , 1 video a day should keep everyone happy.. thankyou sir..
Thanks for the great comment!
The cars are so well made nowadays, that it's amazing,
they inteligently manage to carefully design and make a simple 2 bolt EGR valve that you absolutely need a 1000 euro computer to allow you to tighten those 2 bolts,
just amazing
You can make this procedure with 10$ ENet cable and dealer Software. Bmw diagnostic Software is very-very good.
bmw so over engineered it is sublimely stupendous SIMPLE ENGINEERING EQUALS CLEVER ENGINEERING ALWAYS.
I've been through the same exact thing but the scan tools I had did not have the feature to put the EGR into the fitting position, I had to work out which wires were for the actuator and simply supplied them with 12V while I fitted it, and fitted it quick because who knows what duty cycle the EGR actuator is designed for, but it worked, the only other thing you didn't say, and this could be my memory here as it was a while back is that I recall using a diag tool to tell the ECU it had a new EGR valve fitted, which is common these days.
EGR valve should be closed during dpf regeneration, then all heat will come thru dpf to help gain particulars burning temperature. Another great video Dan!
Yes am with u with the answer
Thanks for the comment 😉
Interesting that RUclips just notified me 4 weeks after you uploaded this video! Not sure what’s up with that! Yep all notifications selected! Thanks for the video Dan.
Excellent! Do you think this is the reason that a special key is required? To ensure that the engineer is alerted that there is something special in the assembly procedure? I see no other reason for the manufacturer not to use regular bolts.
Excellent point. I was cussing the manufacturer when I initially saw those security bolts thinking to myself, 'why, just why?' Your observation probably explains the very reason.
Yes that's the reason!
I'm amazed with the details of your work giving excellent visuals to really make sure we understand. I wonder what the graphing multimeter would have shown.
Very excited to see another new video! Thank you very much DiagnoseDan, its always helpful to review your videos on certain topics I haven't dealt with in some time, as a course refresher. Its like going back to tech school for 10-15 minutes. Awesome teacher. Thank you again!
🤣🤣👌
We don't need paper directions when we have you Dan to tell us to read the directions. lol Excellent info!
And we don't need a workshop manual on a Corvette when we have Glen💪💪😁
Most enjoyable channel on RUclips for auto enthusiasts......! Perfectly explained in detail with entertaining commentary.
These EGR valves have similar issues with many vehicles including Ford and Toyota. Lots of RUclips videos on the cleaning process but these repairs seldom last. Thank you for producing the best diagnostic videos of all. Please keep them coming...!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
To be honest, this fault is down to very poor design or manufacturing, but it should be easy enough to make this unit remain sealed and stop this. But this is just planned obsolescence.
Something new you learn every day. I wonder how many people have been fitting them wrong all this time. 👍👍👍👍👍
I was thinking the same🤣
The EGR and the Throttle Body are active during regeneration, (I’m not going to say open or closed as their positions change) the reason for this is to control the level of oxygen entering the combustion chamber which then controls exhaust Temperature during regeneration.
👍🏽
Thanks for watching my video!
EGR stays closed on my 3.0 TDI.
@@FoookOff intentionally?
Stays closed on my 2.0 TDI PD BMP. Infact my EGR is programmed off so it stays closed and is blocked off. It still regens and reaches temperatures of 800c. The only time my regen can't initiate is when there is an EGR code stored on the computer.
Awesome Dan
Bit of an asshole design on that valve, it would be simple to make that fork-like actuator arm and valve itself to be attached together with couple screws and it would be serviceable assembly, just disassemble and clean it. Brass gears and it would last lifetime of vehicle if maintained correctly.
Thanks for another great video Dan, just wish you had time to make more as they are really enjoyable to watch.
Yes it would be great to do more videos
So, yet another BMW engineering flaw guarantees service department revenue.
....'Poof!' And he fixed it. Got it? Got it? XD!!!
hello dan,
i only change egr cooler and egr valve.👍
Dpf regen happens by injecting more fuel post (after tdc). This will make exhaust heat. Egr is allways closed under regen to get maximum o2 in to combustion. A leaking egr valve will make combustion colder and less clean, making life for dpf hard..
The engineers failed their goal. If you reached the EGR valve in less than two days, they didn't hide it well enough.
🤣🤣🤣👍
Maybe, if you didn't have a scan tool that offered that feature, maybe you could retract the plunger with the tool you used to test it with? Even if you retracted all the way, it would seem you would have adequate clearance for mounting.
That's funny, Rheinmetal makes auxiliary power supply units on the trains I work on 😎
Its a big company with alot of departements
I am a technician and so when you asked the question "Should the EGR valve be open or closed during DPF regeneration?" and I didn't immediately know I thought huh? How come I've never had to consider that before? Good question.
But what I do know about EGRs is they allow spent gases to occupy some of the combustion chamber therefor reducing exhaust temperatures and NOx emissions as a result.
What I know about DPF regeneration is the temperatures are extremely high to break down the hydrocarbons clogging the filter.
Logically then: The EGR should be closed during a DPF regen. But I imagine there are specific circumstances in the mapping that will allow for it to be open maybe some of the time.
Good video again Dan. You're a legend and obviously really know your stuff.
I love these videos and your diagnosis are alaways great but you surprised me that you made a mistake in that you never checked to see if the egr cooler was blocked or leaking coolant as this is a very common problem on these bmw/mini engines there is even a quilty enhancement for that issue at the moment
If the egr cooler is blocked i wouldn't have the faultcode egr flow to high. The car is not loosing any coolant and everything was dry inside
@@Diagnosedanhi Dan love your videos but didn't say it was blocked I said you should have checked it while you had the valve out and yes they can start blocking up and sooting up the egr valve that was your fault sticking egr return spring valve ya ? When the soot builds up after a period of time they over heat the egr cooler then crack and leak coolant I see it every day unfortunately anyway keep the videos rolling 👍
Nice video and diagnosis. It will be interesting to see more of the new scan tool. I like the big TV for the visually impaired crowd I belong too. 😂
Me too 🤣🤣🤓🤓🤓🤓
thanks king for another great educational video!
My pleasure
Hello Dan. Glad to find your video. Can you advise for BMW 320D with Fault code 290900 air to EGR air mass flow, plausibility measured air mass compared with calculated air mass to high, please
Re egr I think open/partially open as its between the engine and the dpf so shouldn’t be affected by the dpf cleaning process, and should therefore re-circulate assuming engine warm. Do you think the low mileage of the car accelerated the egr sticking?
I dont think so.
The EGR valve should be closed so the fuel injected on the exhaust stroke goes into the DPF to heat it up to allow regeneration and not back into the cylinders and be burnt .
Awsome answer💪💪
@@Diagnosedan I still have a lot to learn. But thanks 😊
YAAAAAAAY
NEW VIDEO !!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
🤣🤣
Hello I'm French from Marseille.
Thanks you for your video.
Should I use the diagnostic tools to remove the egr valve or only for installation?
I subscribe 👍
You have the coolest tools. I would be lying if I told you I wasn't jealous
The axel or pushrod on that EGR valve has a manufacturing flaw where it meets with that "fork" arm that the gear operates. The soot was collecting in that area causing it to bind within the fork. Amazing that the pushrod seal allowed all of that soot inside the mechanical area but if that was its design then the fork and pushrod meeting point is a dumb design. If that seal is supposed to keep out the soot from the interior parts then, the seal simply failed and likely due to heat and not so tested seal materials. Maybe the owner needs a few trips on the expressway !
Thanks for the comment
Always enjoy a new upload from yourself, diagnostic for simple people like me. Just an observation tho, your filming seems to have changed and was a bit more confusing to watch? Still seeing the egr in use was very interesting 🙂
Thanks for watching
Thanks Dan for making this great video.
My pleasure Kenny
Nice! What if you had used your PWM driver to retract the EGR? Is the retraction amount critical?
This is a pwm driver, yes it the % the egr opens is regulated
@@Diagnosedan So, if you had retracted without the special function of the tool, you should do a calibration for the ECU to learn the limits of the EGR valve?
thanks dan for your great videos, please do a video for the new tool with the pros and cons..cheers master
Thanks!
This is the reason why this job become harder to do. A lot of parts to remove for a dirty job egr, fancy tools to install. The trick with egr during regeneration I think it start when they manufactured cars with regeneration active without driving.
Thanks for watching
Great video, Danny!
i love your videos, so informative i learn something on them all :)
That's great to hear
@DiagnoseDan Do you put the answers to the bonus question somewhere?
Yes i will post it on my Facebook page
Ha, "Hydraulic Press Channel" Dan your a funny guy, that made me really laugh. Thanks for another Great Video
Hello Jon
🤣🤣👍👍
I'm a BMW tech and done to the letter. Not to mention the EGR cooler issues. We also carry out an air mass test via ISTA to confirm repair. Very interested in the Top Don machine have used the Pheonix Elite very impressed .
Thank you danny, amazing video as always... keep up the great work 😎👍😎👍😎👍😎👍😎👍
Thanks Hosé😁👍
Love your videos, Dan. keep it coming extremely educational, stay away from Diesel cars.
🤣🤣👍
Well done BMW for making it even harder the average joe to replace it themselves 😡 I also bet that there's hardly ANY OTHER security torx on that car ???
What is your ducking problem BMW?! 😠
During the DPF regeneration cycle, some diesel gets sprayed by the injectors on the exhaust stroke, to help burn off the soot caught in the DPF. EGR valve would need to be closed. Always love your videos man! Greetings from South Africa!
Great work Dan, Love all the bonus footage as well 🤣 :)
An EGR valve installation position, does it also need a relearn after install?
The extra lengths to stop people working on their vehicle I guess it could be possible to retract by applying voltage during install if the shop had no feature on their scan tools, similar to electronic brake caliper and using the electronic brake switch/button for adaption afterwards.
Always good to see your videos, I hope ya get time to post up more often😃
EGR should be closed during DPF regen
Thanks James!
Thanks Dan! Always learn something new when watching your videos!!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Mike!
Translation: only compliments
I had this on my 2011 520D , new EGR sorted it, FYI there is a couple of EGR cooler recalls of the BMW B47 engine [ my Current one] , cooling fluid leaking from the EGR cooler onto a hot exhaust manifold can cause a fire.
You are right👍
Another AWESOME video Dan ! Thanks for all the lessons you provide us all !!
Much appreciated !
Thanks!
DAN IF ONLEY YOU HAD ASK ME . BUT YOU NEVER DO . DO YOU WILL HAVE TO KEEP DOING IT THE HARD WAY . 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 DAN HAVE YOU GONE UP A SIZE . TUT TUT . IS THAT A HARLEY DAVIDSON IN THE BACK GROUND.
Hey Tony its not, its a Japanese bike😁

You've been watching the Hydraulic Press Channel Dan. And the EGR valve should be closed during regen. Thank you for another entertaining and informative vid!
I was about to comment about the Hydraulic Press Channel too !
Yes indeed i've watched some of the videos 🤣🤣
I’ve just had a letter from BMW about my 2013 X3 Diesel saying there is a fault on the EGR valve saying that they will replace it free of charge. This is a recall from BMW,mine is the 3litre diesel.
There were some recalls indeed
apple methods outside...for every single thing you need a 1000euro scanner.
How interesting you have a large monitor to see the scanner info. I just suggested this to Eric O. at South Main Auto the other day.
My eyesight is getting worse 🤣
There are regular car technicians, and the there is Dan. 👍👍👍
My petrol Skoda Octavia EGR valve was sticking/jamming last year and my local garage took the top off to reveal the same problem ... Soot & Carbon.
After a vacuum, scrape-out and lubrication everything was fine .... but only for 3 month.
Than I broke down at a particularly bad junction, and had to be recovered with my Dog in the car .... EGR was the fault code.
A new EGR valve installation was £303 in rip-off UK ...
Thank you for another great video 👍🏼
Thanks for watching
Excellent video Dan!
I've have this exact issue with my 520d, BMW replaced the valve and cooler and updated the software, issue resolved for a couple of months, then new EGR got clogged/stuck again, replaced again, I now have the same symptoms again with the 2nd new valve. Any suggestions why it is still happening? They mentioned the software update controls the valve differently now depending on the temperature 🤔
The whole purpose of EGR operation is to reduce combustion temperature to reduce Nox emissions but during DPF regeneration heat needs to be generated so EGR should be closed 👍🧑🔧🧑🔧🧑🔧
66000km and need this!!!! why Mr. Kilmer hates bmw/audi!!!!!!
Thanks for the tutorial Dan,
Followed everything you did, except i used ISTA.
When i activate service mode it retracts the valve to 30. But once install it and screw it on, as i tighten it slowly retracts the valve position to 50+ as if its hitting something?
Any ideas?
Driving it like this still puts the car into limp mode.
I have that exact bmw, 2017 x1? I have had problems with the exhaust flap not opening and now they are replacing my entire exhaust
Hello, thanks for the video. I have Fiat Bravo 2008 1.6 multijet 105. Since I have it often has an unstable idle when the engine starts to get warm or is already hot. It is like that for more than a year and nobody can tell what is the problem of the car - I have visited a few mechanics, diagnostics etc. From a few months, I have a check engine light and when I read the code it says P0487 - Insufficient EGR opening. Is it possible the EGR to be the root cause of the unstable idle? I have already disassembled my throttle body and the egr valve and cleaned them - no improvement. Thanks!
Closed I believe. A great video.
Thanks for watching
Hi. I watched your video and it really helped me understand how the EGR works on my car. My question is, can I use a pmw that pulls the valve before installing it because I don't have access to an expensive scanning tool that has that special function. Do I need to do the relearn on the new EGR? Thank you
EGR open or closed during DPF regen depends on the regeneration strategy i guess.
In case of heating up the EGT temp closed 100%, how ever the strategy of late injecting fuel and dumping unburned fuel in the cat to heat up the EGR i think it may be fine if the EGR stays active (same for systems that have a separate injector in the exhaust).
Why do they make an EGR valve that is spring loaded but breaks when you push it? Could they not have made it pushable and then skip the installation position procedure? This is bad engineering. Also trying to stop people from removing the EGR valve with security torx is dumb.
Hi boss, can u help.my vw tsi scirocco kept showing break servo yet the brakes seems ok.but anytime i reset the battery,it always doesnt let me start n showing stering button funtion malfunction.with red color stering icon.smtimes 2,4days it need to get them to b ok.fyi,my scanner always shows,10a5.along with egr,n p0441.some ppl say it was the flap problem.but since the day i bought it,it has run 3clynders 3times.even when it was ok,it kept showing simptom of misfire.the aircondtion also not working when brake servo shows.now cos i dnt know which wrksyop that i can trust,it has been driven with stall.cant past 3k rpm.so frustrated.thingking of change car but still need to repair this🙏🙏
The EGR on my 84 Lincoln Mark VII would get stuck open and I would have chunks of carbon holding the valve open . When stuck open the car would not idle. Never figured out what caused the carbon. I think it was related to slack in the timing chain , causing the vehicle to run rich. The work around was a screen that caught the carbon .
The manufacturer made this on purpose to fail. If they designed a valve that has a tight fit on the bushing and the entry point of the bushing is shaped like a scraper this would never happened. The amount of side play of the valve in the bushing is just to much, on the new EGR. If it was up to me I would make a new bushing and some mods to it.
Thanks for your comment!
Great videos Dan, can you show where the oil pressure sensor is on BMW 520 diesel 2014?
Rheinmatall bought Pierburg (carburater) many years ago and still develop car parts related to fuel supply, injection etc
Re. The EGR Valve not being retracted. It's not retracted so as not to pre-tension the return spring. If it was sitting on a shelf for months/years, the spring, if under tension, would weaken.
EGR valve must be closed during dpf regeneration, so more oxygen can get into combustion chamber and the burning temperature can get higher.
Charging wires laying on paint..... ALWAYS put a fender cover or your are going to one day be paying for a paint job.
Hi Dan a potential cause for the parasitic draw could actually be the egr too As its commanded shut after engine is off then it will often try to satisfy the position sensor by trying to release the egr, this is the reason you sometimes hear a loud buzzing from the failed egrs with electronic actuators. Its not something I've proved like but I know the egrs are required shut during start up to allow the maf and intake calculations to be accurate without unmetered egr flow. The current draw could be similar to when a starter goes duff. You still send the same power that's required.... but it does nothing and if the computer is trying to close a stuck open valve by commanding the motor to give the spring a little push for a while after cars of it could create a draw. Just a thought. Hope your well. Haha get top Don to send me freebies and ill love them long time hahaha
Thanks for the feedback
Great vid man, obviously dont do as much diesel stuff here as you guys back there however really interesting to see the install position. I didnt know that but I do now. I am guessing that the egr is closed during re gen due to temps involved during regen and not wanting to burn valves or seats, but not being a diesel guy i am guessing
Great to see you here Adrian, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment its really appreciated.
Dan , you are 100 percent right in your diagnosis , and fitting of this part , i am a BMW tech of 30 years , as you know BMW are on a masive EGR cooler recall , the last few EGR recalls have being change the Valves and program the car , then was change just the EGR coolers , now it change EGR coolers with valves as well , i suspect the cat will be due for that recall .
Thanks for the comment 👍
Have just taken my 2.5d for recall on EGR software, seems BMW are on the case.
Hello mister Dan .
I followed you for a long period of time.
And only in 1 video you put the link to the tools s that you use .
Question where I can find the egr tester or any body on the comenta please.
Gracias amigo
just put the egr to carbage and block the holes it left.. then program it off from the car. then wash the intake mabifold and remove flaps from there.. that way you get more power and extend motors life very much!!
Diagnosedan can plz explan why to initialize the egr valve , because the movement of valve is according to length till the closer position of valve so there is no option it can hit the metal and extend its postion because it made to make movement till the closing postion not above that postion ?
cool dan
DAN i cant leave a comment on your latest ALFA AC THREAD ...there are no comments whatso ever
Dan...any need/did you check the seat that the valve closes against? Ever see any problems there?
I thought the valve could be cleaned with soot cleaner liquid [forget its actual name /chemical].
