We buy home security hardware (Ring, Simply Safe, etc.) and have to pay to get access to the features. At first it was a nominal fee but now the fees are outrageous for no added value.
It should auto cancel if you have not used it in 60 days.. but I also only have one and I use the prepaid card method.. so they can't charge me I o don't put money on it ..

I think you might have overlooked the 'Ring' model (although an argument could be made it is a subset of sunk cost fallacy): Acompany sells extremely expensive products, like ring camera/alarm or oura ring, and makes them 98% useless without recurring MRRA subscription fees. I ended up accepting the $2,000+ loss in the Ring hardware investment, as I refused to keep paying for their ridiculous subscription charges after my one-year free trial from Costco ran out. I despise Ring. Every time the branch blew in the wind I got a human alert in ring. Brw- Eufy offers a solid alternative with security cameras that don’t lock users into a subscription (for now), providing local storage and fully functional security cameras without a monthly fee. I will be pissed if/when they go the route of evil (force subscription). In contrast to Eufy, Ring demanded $20 a month just to notify me every time a leaf blew in the wind or a cat crossed the frame with a “human alert.” Worse yet, I couldn’t review the footage to confirm if it was an actual intruder without paying the fee. On the flip side, somehow my disdain for subscriptions is Costco. Most people in Hawaii love Costco, and so do I. Even though it’s technically a subscription, I have zero resentment about my membership. Costco has never changed how they treat their members, and they consistently offer the best prices around, especially here in Hawaii. Their famous $1.50 hot dog and soda combo has been the same price my entire life! Plus, their return policy is unmatched-they’ve really got your back (though recently, the optical department seems to be an odd exception, but I digress). As for Adobe, I stopped using their products back in the early days of Creative Cloud. Their transition to cloud and discontinuation of the original suite made me suspicious. It's been nearly a decade since then. I used to consider Adobe as a must-have; now I'd rather avoid it. I've even seen artists like Jazza transition away from Adobe. What a fall from grace.
And this is why I do not subscribe with/to my devices (I do not need to connect to my fridge, it's insane), and only a minimal amount of internet services.

Idk man - this pessimism towards all these technologies we created seems a bit extreme. Taking subscriptions as an example; the alternative 20 years ago for Netflix was going to Blockbuster and paying £5 to rent/buy a single DVD. And now we spend, what, £15/month to watch an endless amount of content? Whether people choose to make the most of that, or even cancel it after the month, is completely up to them. Sure, companies will try to use psychology to keep people engaged, but it’s ultimately our own responsibility to manage ourselves and our time. The majority of subscriptions are significantly more efficient than one-time purchases, especially when you consider you can cancel whenever you want. I’ve always like your content, and by all means continue producing it; I like hearing the pessimistic viewpoints, but I feel like the majority of people focus on the negative and overlook the positives, which I’ve been noticing a lot from your videos recently. Social media and phones are seen as inventions that have done mostly harm to us. I believed it was Aperture who stated that “Facebook/social media was meant to connect us but it’s not done that, instead it’s spawned a plethora of mental health issues”. I agree that it has exasperated mental health issues, but it has ALSO allowed us to interact with people globally. We now no longer rely on a centralised news source that feeds us unbiased information. We can stay in touch with long distance relatives and friends. We can build a community of like minded people, which without the internet can be extremely hard to do in real life even with local communities. But in regard to this video, subscriptions have been very beneficial for making products and services more accessible. The “negative” we typically focus on is that people lack the ability to properly manage how they spend their time. People complain that “big businesses are brainwashing us” when, while they’re definitely using psychology to keep us hooked, what’s really happening is that we are becoming undisciplined, which ultimately falls down to us to solve, not some kind of mass change in how things run. My main point is that we need more focus on the positive, which is why I create content centred around this. Even if you look at movies, the majority narrative around the future is bleak. Where some new tech goes on a rampage and destroys civilisation. But there’s rarely any narratives that highlight all the good that’s come from all these new technologies. It’s a shame because then we get to where we are today, where the average person allows tech to ruin their lives, while at the same time complaining that it’s “not within their control” which is completely ridiculous.

A lot of cosmetic and graphical errors when displaying the text on the screen (especially the y's) and some overlap or repeats of something you had already said. Many good points, however; don't blame Capitalism. Individuals have a choice, and a capitalist system enables freedom of choice. In fact, I like supporting artists, creators, and authors if I enjoy their craft. I found a free PDF of Dan Simmon's Hyperion and read the whole thing in a matter of days. Went out and bought the book shortly after. I wouldn't do the same for a book, show, or movie I didn't enjoy. Idk man - this pessimism towards all these technologies we created seems a bit extreme.
Taking subscriptions as an example; the alternative 20 years ago for Netflix was going to Blockbuster and paying £5 to rent/buy a single DVD. And now we spend, what, £15/month to watch an endless amount of content?
Whether people choose to make the most of that, or even cancel it after the month, is completely up to them. Sure, companies will try to use psychology to keep people engaged, but it’s ultimately our own responsibility to manage ourselves and our time.
The majority of subscriptions are significantly more efficient than one-time purchases, especially when you consider you can cancel whenever you want.
I’ve always like your content, and by all means continue producing it; I like hearing the pessimistic viewpoints, but I feel like the majority of people focus on the negative and overlook the positives, which I’ve been noticing a lot from your videos recently.
Again, I still like your content, but as someone who is pro-technology, it’s a bit disheartening how such a large majority of people just focus on all the bad of life, when life is actually extremely beautiful and prosperous.
No, you need to focus on both the positive and the negative. There's no that one or these ones. You must always remember the positive and negative. If you overlook the positive, you'll fall into despair, but if you focus solely on the good, you start to allow the bad to run rampant.

Social media and phones are seen as inventions that have done mostly harm to us.
I believed it was Aperture who stated that “Facebook/social media was meant to connect us but it’s not done that, instead it’s spawned a plethora of mental health issues”.
I agree that it has exasperated mental health issues, but it has ALSO allowed us to interact with people globally. We now no longer rely on a centralised news source that feeds us unbiased information. We can stay in touch with long distance relatives and friends. We can build a community of like minded people, which without the internet can be extremely hard to do in real life even with local communities.
But in regard to this video, subscriptions have been very beneficial for making products and services more accessible.
The “negative” we typically focus on is that people lack the ability to properly manage how they spend their time. People complain that “big businesses are brainwashing us” when, while they’re definitely using psychology to keep us hooked, what’s really happening is that we are becoming undisciplined, which ultimately falls down to us to solve, not some kind of mass change in how things run.
My main point is that we need more focus on the positive, which is why I create content centred around this. Even if you look at movies, the majority narrative around the future is bleak. Where some new tech goes on a rampage and destroys civilisation. But there’s rarely any narratives that highlight all the good that’s come from all these new technologies. It’s a shame because then we get to where we are today, where the average person allows tech to ruin their lives, while at the same time complaining that it’s “not within their control” which is completely ridiculous.

- My point is that people focus TOO heavily on the negatives, while not focusing enough on the positives.
- Negatives are important, but a lot of the negatives that get stated, such as social media not connecting us, I think aren’t valid as there’s so much connection that has come from social media on a global scale.
- People will complain about big businesses ruining their lives with tech, while at the same time WILLINGLY using the technology.
- The vast majority of media spins a negative narrative on future technologies, usually ending up with it harming humanity in some way. While it’s important to be aware of these potential outcomes, I don’t feel as though there’s enough representation for the positives, which then prevents people from wanting to accept innovation.
But I agree with your comment overall. Both sides must be taken into account to get a truly holistic perspective and approach to future developments and their impact.

Had to comment again to say that the video felt a little rushed. A lot of cosmetic and graphical errors when displaying the text on the screen (especially the y's) and some overlap or repeats of something you had already said. Definitely would have benefited from having the team watch the video from beginning to end prior to releasing it.
Yeah I noticed two instances where the same line was repeated twice which was a bit odd. He should take his time to ensure great quality. There is no need to rush.

Many good points, however; don't blame Capitalism. Individuals have a choice, and a capitalist system enables freedom of choice. Agreed, it is very difficult to sidestep and/or contain the subscription system, and it requires forethought and commitment from the individual. If anyone or thing is to blame it is the hallowed investors and venture capitalists who are manipulating the system to their advantage. It is a simplistic suggestion to blame capitalism. The culture of voracious greed makes it ok to idolize these investors and the IP churn.
I wonder if there is a correlation between the decline of participation in organized religion and tithing and our susceptibility to the subscription model. People with AppleTV seem kinda religious about it, lol

One last one, piracy is a fantastic alternative. Perhaps you should make a video exploring it a bit further. Does emulation equate piracy? What if I own the game but it doesn't work anymore or the system is obsolete?
I personally pirate content that is not available for free elsewhere or in one of my subscriptions, but I purchase the ones I enjoy. Be it Blu-Ray or digitally. In fact, I like supporting artists, creators, and authors if I enjoy their craft.
I found a free PDF of Dan Simmon's Hyperion and read the whole thing in a matter of days. Went out and bought the book shortly after. I wouldn't do the same for a book, show, or movie I didn't enjoy.
