Multiple landslides are blocking highway 276 north of Brevard, NC, preventing access to the very popular Looking Glass Waterfall. This waterfall filmed along with signs of tree damage and erosion. Also a crawfish found high up on steps, and other signs of the peak water flow reaching at approximately the same height of the waterfall. The nearest gas station to these landslides has a very long wait and is one of the only places to get gas (cash only). #ncwx #brevard #helene

Back in 2016 i went camping with my boyfriend and our friends at Looking Glass. Seeing this is so terribly heartbreaking.
It was so gorgeous when we went. I'm hoping it can be restored.
I'm looking for my daughter, Kaci Fawcett, son in law, Joe Fawcett and my granddaughter. If anyone meets up with them at a shelter or anything please tell them their family is safe and to contact us as soon as they can. We are worried sick!!!

Thank you for the video. A piece of my heart is at Looking Glass Falls and I hope to be able to visit his resting place again.
I proposed to my wife right under the waterfall at Looking Glass falls just after the path down April 22, 2022. My sister lived off of Brevard Rd - Seeing this video and knowing the devastation just breaks my heart. I loved going to Asheville and the surrounding communities.
Nothing but good memories from our last visit to Brevard and the Pisgah National Forest. We spent days visiting waterfalls in the area, walking many miles daily. Can't imagine the volumes of water from this storm coming over any of the falls. It seems impossible. Best hopes for all.
2 of my fav things, Looking Glass Falls and US 276 😢😢😢. guess I'm cancelling Nov. trip ... may God help everyone there ✝️

@@jboote it's one of mine as well along with the Parkway ... I live 800 miles away but have vacationed there my whole life ... I'm just in shock 😲
@forestghost7 Check with the county as to the condition of the roads or with the NC DOT (department of transportation) or Dept of Tourism. The Blue Ridge Parkway in NC remains closed but is open in VA.

Last year my wife and I went to Pisgah and saw Looking Glass Falls and it was so beautiful. We also went to Chimney Rock and it was such a cool little town. This is so incredibly sad. We have a trip planned for the first week of November to Hendersonville, but I haven’t seen much about the damage there. If anyone knows if it’s too bad to consider visiting in about a month, let me know.
Google the town Hendersonville, NC+ Helene damage. Much of the area has severy damaged roads, Many towns if near creeks or rivers have been hollowed out or swept away. There might not be a place to stay. Many places have no water due to broken waterlines, and damaged water systems. There is no food, and other than air drops, no way to feed anyone. Due to the trillions of gallons of water from Helene, the leaves won't be worth seeing. Apple crops, ruined.
Years ago I went on a camping trip in this area with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks & Rec. It was SO BEAUTIFUL there, so this is very heartbreaking and devastating to see. 😢💔😣

Went to Brevard college, in 91 I recall a guy kayaking over Looking Glass falls, he bottomed out, got out of his kayak, got in his car and drove himself to the hospital with a spinal compression injury. Hope Brevard is faring well post storm.
I've been temped to ride by and go up to Looking Glass but think I'll wait till Spring
My Dad lives on a side of a mountain in Pisqugh forest. He has no cell service. I'm so worried.

Mountain people tend to stick together and help one another so don't worry. He can hunt for food.
I just heard from my friends by Highlands on Sunday, no cell service but they got electricity back down in Horse Cove, and that's relatively isolated down there. If your dad lives that remotely by choice, he can likely handle it just fine.

WOW! That is some sticky slippery wet red clay from those land slides! Much worse than sand!
That red clay is just nasty, wet OR dry! 😜 The only thing I didn't like about the area.
@@VickiRiley-jx5zp Yes, it will stain, but it makes wonderful bricks, and a certain different clay in the center of the state, makes stunning pottery. (Seagrove and Jugtown) are examples.
My father and step mother are in Pisgah Forest. I am unable to contact them. Anyone know a local number there to call for information?

Pisgah Forest is one of the prettiest forests in all of the Blue Ridge Mountains there's so many beautiful Falls up there I was hoping it didn't get hit by Helena but I should have known better I went to school at Brevard College back in the nineties and I know the little French Broad River Flows right through that college so I don't know what it actually did to that area but I don't even recognize this I mean I know this is the road up to the Blue Ridge Parkway I assume. God bless them all
I was there in July 2023. I’m heartbroken 💔 to say the least. So much devastation
We came from Brevard...drove all night last night. Our son has a house in Pisgah, we left due to no electricity. It's not as bad there but I 26 had portion that was flooded. Cascade Lake Rd was flooded, and not passable on Friday. The camping road people use as a detour was flooded as well by Friday. Saturday the water receded on Cascade Lake Rd.
We were on higher ground but decided to go back to Orlando, Florida yesterday because we've heard that Brevard will take 2 weeks before the electricity comes back.
We had to use East Airee Rd (inside Pisgah Forest) to get out. We saw trees and power cables down.

What about the town called Brevard my brother is there

@@lilbits4173 Thanks for the update, Hope everyone you know is ok. We've stayed in Brevard right outside of Pisgah several times and I'm glad to hear it's not as bad as other parts of NC.
My friend is down the mountain in Pisgah Forest and who knows if the house suffered landslide. Cannot get through even to the Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and police and fire department. Praying that he, his dogs and everyone is safe.
Find any gems stones down there? Wonder what the Cullasaja looks like?
I remember arriving in Highlands right after Hurricane Ivan back in 2004, didn't even know about the storm hitting there, finally found the only way into town by driving over a blacktop road with no earth underneath it, that was a gamble but people were amazed, the town paper interviewed me to find out how I got in. LOL

I haven't heard from my son. He is at school at schenck Job Corp just a few miles away from looking glass falls in Pisgah Forest.

@@forestghost7 I live in Mount Pilot down in the foothills near Mount airy. My husband just met a Park ranger in town that was loading up on supplies to try and get up there I guess as close as he can. He was getting pet food and diapers of course. I hope you hear from your friends soon. The rain has just started again here. Just what we need 😲

For Pisgah Forest - I have been trying to find a way to get in contact to find out what the status is. Chamber of Commerce, downtown business in Brevard, etc. Cannot get through. Worried as well.

Very likely. Check with the place you were going to. NO ONE is welcome but emergency help. Roads are going to remain impassible for months = pavement is GONE, Roads on sides of mountains swept away as well as underpinnings! We got more than just mudslides, water 20 ft deep tore buildings and homes and bridges away and turned everthing into rumble.

@@Pquns Depends on why you were going. The leaf color WILL be affected by all this rain. The forest slopes have suffered severe erosion. So, if into hiking check with hikers/ hiking sites. Your B&B might not be entirely truthful with you. They might be able to house you, yes. They aren't responsible for your enjoyment of the area, though. With the dock strike food is going to be in short supply and tractor trailers can't get up there to supply stores, due to road issues.
NC has a Dept of tourism. You can also check with them for an unbiased assessment closer to your trip as well as checking with that county and the town or towns, you with to visit. Right now, they are still recovering DEAD BODIES... EVERY DAY!
@@BetsyAmos we are going for a celebration of life. So will mostly be at air bnb. Just worried nothing will be open and roads will be washed away still. But they should have most of that fixed by the 18th I would think but I’m from Indiana. So never had to deal with. Hurricanes *

I have a best friend who lives off Rosman Hwy., & Clement Rd. And, two other friends nearby & I can’t get through on any cell service. Does anyone know the status of the area?

My best friend lives in Brevard. I heard from him Saturday night. He said it's bad, but much worse other places. They have electric and water, but no cellular or internet service. He drove out of town to check in. Text message is probably the best way to contact.

Most electronic devices have ability for volume up/down/mute. Pretty simple solution.
It isn’t added noise. It was a slowed down part to show the water.

Everything looks pretty normal for this area. Slides only occurred because the road was cut in there. Normal mountain stuff. Same everywhere in western, nc. Only problems are the one caused by too many people living there. Just be mindful about your impact if living there.
