Fun fact: Julius Caesar suffered from "Falling Sickness". The term was, back then, used as something of a catch-all for any ailments that tended to result in the sufferer collapsing. It's believed that Julius Caesar himself suffered from epilepsy. Which would result in seizures, and thus, him collapsing/falling to the ground. Hence.. Falling Sickness. ......I guess this fact isn't quite as fun as I advertised it as being.. :P
Jon, from all the research that I learned, command actually increases attack of units in the army and also increases the radius of influence for increased moral around the commander on the battlefield AS WELL AS how well the auto resolved battles go. It's the main reason that fights are very fast in RTW since attack is increased but defence isn't so troops end up dying a lot. PS: My research is reading forums ahahah
Jon! Answering some questions you raised: 1. Your Hastati in Larissa stopped throwing their pila at the enemy general because he was engaged in melee with your forces. Units will not auto-fire when they will cause friendly casualties (calculation made at moment of firing). 2. You can order your Hastati (and other missile-armed troops) to charge without throwing their spears by holding ALT. This would have gotten those Hastati piled into the enemy general much more quickly, rather than milling around trying to reform for a pila throw. 3. You didn't auto-win the capture of Larissa because, while the pikemen broke, they broke into a "fighting to the death" state due to being completely surrounded with not even a small corridor to retreat through. Units which are "fighting to the death" still count against an auto-win due to routing the enemy, because they're not fleeing - they're still fighting (albeit with heavy penalties due to their morale being broken).
Key words being strict. Western quarantine was a strongly worded letter to please stay inside if you want. Chinese/other quarantine was speakers in all public areas and broadcasts on TV ordering everyone to stay in their homes or risk being arrested or shot. China and a few other places were done with covid after the first lockdown, nobody else seems to understand what quarantine actually fucking means.
Ships are actually truly powerful. That is because of all the seamen. Just throw all the seamen you've got into the face of any empire and they will choke sooner rather than later. Literally drown them in seamen and you will prevail.
The command stat also gives units fighting bonuses, so for example: A general with 10 star command leading is similar to units having 9 chevron experience in terms of bonuses to fighting skill, morale etc.
Gosh, It felt like an eternity since Thursday, Jon. I dont know why this series is so addicting to watch, but I do know that four days is way too long to wait for this series!
Patrick Jackson yeah I agree. This series isnt just a fun strategy game to watch, it's just perfect for Jon. He loves this kind of stuff and it makes me love Rome too
The Samnites were a people group in central/southern italy around the modern regions of Campania and Molise, so it makes sense they would be found in Tarentum and probably Capua as well.
one incredibly minor tip: If you hold ctl as you give an attack order units will switch to a different weapon, this can be used to have roman infantry charge without throwing Pilla, have missile units use their melee weapon, and Cavalry switch to their backup weapon (usually swords but Cataphracts wield Maces) That in particular is more useful after a charge and the enemy unit hasnt broken, Swords do better than spears in prolonged cavalry combat against infantry
I remember reading on the totalwarcenter forums that general's command increases the stats of the units in the army by 1 per star, so a 3 star general would give units +3 attack +3 defense ect. I don't know if it also affects morale but I'm pretty sure it does.
Even better than charge and rally, is to run in the correct direction but issue the charge command when at normal charge range. The general rears and falls back, the unit hesitates but then accelerates with the general rearing. Of course approaching obliquely and "reflecting" off before the general is engaged also works well.
I feel this is a good place to share my R:TW story: the tale of Genericus Romanus (I've forgotten his name and he was a really stereotypical Roman General so I have dubbed him thus) Genericus the faction leader of the Brutii, and was RIDICULOUSLY old, but he was also the man who had conquered - Gaul, Greece, Turkey, Carthage and the middle-east, and had lead each major battle and siege personally, his bodyguard having many times turned the tide of a battle and winning the day. Eventually he decided "to hell with all this 'Republic crap' I control most of the known world! And so marched on Rome, killing ALL their generals (several personally) and finally marching into Rome itself. Then he fucking died of old age, the bastard.
44:15 Huge missed opportunity to weaken those hoplites. It's a great tactic to charge into them while they're not in phalanx formation like when they're being moved because they take huge casualties. I've had full units of armored hoplites and the like break from one good heavy cavalry charge while they had their pokers up. It's truly bewildering to me to see so many players scared of hoplites, as if touching them instantly causes any cavalry unit to just vanish in a instant no matter what and instead, they have them wiped out units that wouldn't much damage at all anyway. So long as you don't charge into the front of a prepared phalanx, you can engage hoplites with cavalry without risking annihilation.
Seconded. I'd often take on hoplites with equites - the trick is to isolate a hoplite phalanx, then surround it front and rear. They'll advance on one, and you charge it from behind with the other. Even armoured hoplites can't handle that.
command gives several important buffs, firstly is the increased chance of autoresolve victory but also each star gives a battlewide moral boast, so a 10 star general gives 10 moral bonus to his troops in battle, making routing them near impossible without killing him
Hi Jon, when you're chasing down units with cavalry, don't click on the unit you want to chase down (unless you're leaving light cavalry chasing infantry or slower cavalry without waching it yourself), instead target ahead of them so that your cavalry runs -through- them. You'll mop up the fleeing troops much quicker as your unit will attack while moving past the enemy. This stops your cavalry from doing a "false charge" where they stop charging and slowly amble into the enemy once contact has been made by the frst soldier from the unit.
I've been meaning to stop and comment. For the longest time I have watched all of your Fallout videos. I came along during your FO3 Kill Everything run. I have been addicted to you channel every since. But I cannot lie. I was always a little bummed out when anything else was done. Don't get me wrong its your channel, you do you. But then I got impatient and checked out this series just a few days ago and it's like wildfire. I can't stop watching. I may have to check out even more of you playing other games. In short. Keep up the good work and thank you.
So I'm playing as the Julii, I decide to do something odd, instead of going after the Gauls, I made an alliance with them, just to make sure they they don't stab me in the back. I instead took my 2 best generals and marched south to take on carthage, I take the town sitting alone on the island with minimal losses, I then go south to take carthage itself, at this point I had already helped the Scipii take the peninsula. I'm able to catch carthage with it's pants down, with only a young general, a single unit of light cav, and a unit of elephants, all of which were already damaged, I assumed because they were fighting rebels too. So I build a couple of ladders, send in my archers to panic the elephants, (Which I didn't realize until later, had gone thought the town square and killed the General), and sent in my Hastatii to finish the job. I had easily taken the capital, it wasn't until I looked at the town build sheet that I realized why it was so easy, the town had a plague, and my two BEST generals had gotten it, now there is a fair chance that both of them will die, and even if they survive, they won't be able to take towns or they will spread it. So I am scared, very scared, because the Greeks are building a massive army, and will steamroll the Gauls, and my two best generals are at least 5 turns south.
The problem is I want the cities, and plagues last a while. Plus, if I send a infected general to an uninfected town, then the only way to spread it is for the general to enter the city, and my spies are over in greece, sizing the enemy up, and stopping an untimely assassination on the gaul leader, which would have sucked even more.
Duxio Aven The thing about the cities being infected for a while is what I had in mind, you're fighting 2 wars on two very separate fronts, if you handicap Carthage for a while you'd be able to concentrate on Greece without worrying about Carthage, yes you'd loose the cities, but later on you'd be ale to come back and claim them with ease the moment the plague goes away, although spreading would be difficult without spies wouldn't it
+Duxio Aven "I made an alliance with them, just to make sure they they don't stab me in the back" I'm not sure how much experience you have with Total war, but the AI ususally considers things like alliances or peace treaties more as a suggestion than a binding agreement :P At some point they'll probably try to backstab you anyway, alliance or no. Since you weren't in a bad enough shape yet. Also, maybe try to ship your generals to greece? You're not focusing on that area, so you might as well cripple the whole thing. Or just train a new spy at Carthage.
sander heutink I learned this the hard way in my playthrough (also the Julii). Almost every alliance betrayed me at once. Parthia, Pontiac, Egypt, Greece, Thacia, Briton...
Ive been watching this series all day today! I started watching the series at 10am today and now it's 8:45pm in the evening XD I can't get enough of Jon and his RTW Brutii campaign, it's just legendary!

I can not wait for the Marius reforms, that will be such a boost in fighting power. Also, thanks for promising another episode bridging the gap between Thursday and Tuesday, that will be a lovely treat.
8:00 the biggest issue with the Seleucids isn't that they're surrounded, it's that the only territories they hold that aren't a town is Antioch and Selucia (which is too far out of the way to be viable to send population to bolster the other towns). you're left wanting to wait until you hit large towns to build up your army to not hamstring yourself later, but the bigger, more established territories your rivals hold are ready to go almost right away (Egypt has cities nearby, Pontia has both territories ready to go, the Greeks have Pergamum ready to roll and Rhodes to back it up, etc...). It's that little delay that makes a big difference in the difficulty spike. Look no further than the Greek Cities: they can face almost immediate pressure from 2 houses of Rome, Carthage, Macedon, The Pontics and the Seleucids, but every territory is a small town and better so they can begin the defense/attack almost right off the bat and an aggressive (and a little lucky) early game means you're essentially coasting all the way into the late game with only the house of Julii and Egypt as major threats (and you can get to 50 and Rome without major conflict with them assuming Julii takes a ceasefire once the rest of Rome has fallen).
Easily your best series yet, and I think I read somewhere that a general having more stars is like experience to other units, allowing it to gain twice as much veterency, but don't quote me on that
Have you heard of the game Battle Brothers? It's kind of like a turn based total war but on a much smaller scale. You command a party of mercenaries and you roam around the land taking contracts and the like. It seems like something you would really like and it's only 20 American dollars so I would recommend you check it out.
For some reason saw these in my sub box and didn't register what was really happening. Rome total war is still my favorite of the total war series. Love finding out details I didn't notice when I played as a teenager. Making my way through the episodes slowly but love the series :).
You should be careful not to over-exert your cavalry, Jon. They were exhausted for most of that fighting and one mistake could've spelled doom. Also, since you weren't using timers, you could've kited the hoplites to within range of the towers. Sure, it would've taken a while, but you could've beaten their entire army during that sally freeing up your big army for the Macedonians.
16:00ish: I don't believe mercs come out of the population, as I've been able to buy some and immediately disband them to push population over into the next settlement size a turn or so early. edit1: 23:00ish: I've noticed that units sometimes act alone and advance or otherwise move without being ordered--and I don't mean 'may charge without orders' troops. Sometimes I catch them in time, others I'm looking for a unit and find it's walked into an enemy unit of its own accord and committed suicide.
THIS IS MY Favorite series on RUclips it got me into total war and I wish you could upload these everyday (sorry for my fanboying) but thanks for making this M.A.T.N
You know what, I gotta say this...I FREAKING LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! I am so surprised by how skilled you are at this game and how much you can do in this game, heck I didn't know you could do biological warfare in this game.
hey. i just wanna say i love youre series, youre very good at this game and learning me a lot of things i think myself this game is one of the best games made and for sure the best total war game. keep up going and do some more campaigns.
Jon, you could have run the cavalry close to the walls, in front of the hoplites and pull them into range of the towers as well, once the peltasts were dealt with. It would have caused more chipping damage at the very least!
Ahhh, you could have sallied out the mercenary peltasts and hastati there at the end, considering you wiped out their ranged peltasts and all that was left was a bunch of lumbering phalanxes. Free kills baby. I love this walkthrough man, keep feeding those Greeks to the dogs!
Hey Jon a little tip here, I don't know if its viable in this version of total war but if you want to clear out running/fleeing enemies faster you should try and do follow-through clicking. What I mean is when your trying to kill a unit of enemies don't click on the enemy to attack them but instead you click on the ground on the opposite side of the enemy unit to your cavalry so what happens is you 'follow/run-through' the enemy unit, killing all of them as all your cavalry has to do is minutely touch them to kill the fleeing units (it has to be a fleeing unit as the whole touch killing doesn't work on combat ready units). This is really good for killing units faster, but as I said I'm not sure on the viably of it though.
Deadly Fish Stix that has sometimes worked for me, but I think it's inconsisyent, because a move command is being issued, half the time the units will think that it is a 'disengage/ignore' order, and not engage the unit they are riding through, killing no one.
hey john just wondering if you knew this or not but when your archers are firing if you press the del button you get a cool camera which follows single arrow no strategic help but is quite cool :)
That sally in Thermon reminds me of a nature documentary showing a pod of Orcas separating a humpback whale calf from the mother using feigned charges at the mother and calf, forcing them to separate as the calf could only move away and the mother could only focus on repelling the Orcas charging at her, leaving the calf vulnerable.
you should use the phalanx charge have the pikes up just before they reach the enemy then drop them right in the face of the other units works surprisingly well
Holy fuck I'm learning so much I didn't know about this game before! My life would've been so much easier through the years if i knew you could sally out and still keep the city! Dammit! XD
I literally just found out about you yesterday and have spent the entire day today bingeing this series to find out you released a new episode just as I catch up. Fucking lucky.
Seleucids have just about every type of unit in the game, they got Pikemen, thye got sword infantry, they got Cataphracts, Armoured elephants, and even archers and scythed chariots. Problem is a lot of this stuff is late game so seleucids can't field a lot until late game
Just to let you know, I'm playing a grueling Total War: Attila campaign at the same time as these are going out and every time you say 'that's something you don't see in later games' I am trying to find it in Attila. Attila has almost everything you miss from ROME (except the nuanced population stuff). Now, I'm not saying that Attila would make a good sequel to this series but if you WERE to do another Total War series immediately after this, I'd recommend Attila.
the command stat also buffs up the generals morale bonus for his army. with 10 command troops will almost always fight to the last man when the general is nearby
Biological Warfare in Rome. "Dominus?! What did you just propose? We're supposed to get our spy infected with the plague and move the poor lad from city to city? That's... probably the meanest and most despicable idea I've ever heard of, Dominus!... Brilliant! Let's do it!"
Jon when you sallied you didn't use your peltasts. I know they are not very good but they are ranged and with no cavalry the greeks have no counter. Just something to keep in mind.
"And the population of the entire game world was massively reduced. It was great fun!"
Jesus, Jon.
Same thing when a wife died, his reaction: "marvelous"

Jon! Answering some questions you raised:

I can not wait for the Marius reforms, that will be such a boost in fighting power.
Also, thanks for promising another episode bridging the gap between Thursday and Tuesday, that will be a lovely treat.
Roxnaron Morthalor But it is such a pain converting units and not being able to heal maniple units
Which will make for more interesting content.
9:20 that's pretty much true.
28:00 check out lone doggo attacking them from behind. Good dog, brave dog.
Been playing the Brutii campaign along with you John, so happy the new episode is here!! Now I can advance on Greece!
ugh, I need more of this, Tuesday and Thursday just isn't enough for me
This is my favorite MATN series. Roma invicta!
Ah, just in time to get one in before bed.
get what in? hm?
Damn! Monday, Wednesday, Friday would be perfect! The suspense is killing me.
love the series keep up the good work!
I love this series!!!! Completely stopped editing my video and watching this despite being in a rush lol
Yep, still astounded at how much I didn't know about my childhood favourite.
You should be careful not to over-exert your cavalry, Jon. They were exhausted for most of that fighting and one mistake could've spelled doom. Also, since you weren't using timers, you could've kited the hoplites to within range of the towers. Sure, it would've taken a while, but you could've beaten their entire army during that sally freeing up your big army for the Macedonians.
can you please do barbarian invasion and medievil 2 after this series
GoatSuit Gaming NO! ROME 1 AND ONLY ROME1!
Sir Bobert Medieval 2 is actually quite good.
Barbarian invasion is Rome 1. Just a little bit on
barbarian invasion would be great, I'd love to see MATN get harassed by invading hordes and finally git gud at the game
+Sir Bobert No it's good to have variation on the channel
16:00ish: I don't believe mercs come out of the population, as I've been able to buy some and immediately disband them to push population over into the next settlement size a turn or so early.
edit1: 23:00ish: I've noticed that units sometimes act alone and advance or otherwise move without being ordered--and I don't mean 'may charge without orders' troops. Sometimes I catch them in time, others I'm looking for a unit and find it's walked into an enemy unit of its own accord and committed suicide.
why is this so entertaining? Its amazing to watch maybe its his commentary and skill plus the extra history you learn!
I've just gone back to school today and started my mocks and this is the perfect thing to make my day better
The income of Tarentum decreased when you purchased the mercenaries, because it's your capital, and that is where the armies are being funded from...
8:36 nope, MATN the Seleucids also start with Hatra and Seleucia, so it's more of a straight line from Seleucia to Sardis
Just as I was wondering what to watch, this pops up in my notification tray. Ah lovely
The reason the pikemen didn't rout at 29:50 is because they are fighting to the death. It happens when they can't flee the battle.
Jon, I have to tell you that your stratagy videos are the absoltly best
I love that one war dog trying to fight an entire unit of troops
THIS IS MY Favorite series on RUclips it got me into total war and I wish you could upload these everyday (sorry for my fanboying) but thanks for making this M.A.T.N
You know what, I gotta say this...I FREAKING LOVE THIS SERIES!!!! I am so surprised by how skilled you are at this game and how much you can do in this game, heck I didn't know you could do biological warfare in this game.
This is really an excellent series Jon. I could watch hours of this.
I've only ever played Cossacks and Red Alert 2 when it comes to RTS games, but Jon is making this game look good.
Can't believe I've played this game since I was a kid and didn't know about half these mechanics, cheers Jon.
hey. i just wanna say i love youre series, youre very good at this game and learning me a lot of things i think myself this game is one of the best games made and for sure the best total war game. keep up going and do some more campaigns.
I love the way Jon says archers
Jon, you could have run the cavalry close to the walls, in front of the hoplites and pull them into range of the towers as well, once the peltasts were dealt with. It would have caused more chipping damage at the very least!
I bought this when episode 8 came out and I've been playing so much that I've done 4 full campaigns.
The Charm Where did you buy it from?
Alex Lastname Steam
Think a Medieval II playthrough might be in the cards for the future?
Nostradamus, we meet again.
I haven't played/watched these games since AOE2, but I am ridiculously invested in this series.
29:45 If a unit is cut off or completely surrounded, it will fight to the death.
I believe command increases the area of the morale bonus units get for being near the general, as well as giving every unit a small attack bonus.
Loving this series, made me pull out my copy and starting playing it. Brutii were always my favorites.
I'd love to see a Star Wars game like this
Loving this series. Great job earning another subscriber.
That sally in Thermon reminds me of a nature documentary showing a pod of Orcas separating a humpback whale calf from the mother using feigned charges at the mother and calf, forcing them to separate as the calf could only move away and the mother could only focus on repelling the Orcas charging at her, leaving the calf vulnerable.
you should use the phalanx charge have the pikes up just before they reach the enemy then drop them right in the face of the other units works surprisingly well
"A Greek and Macedonian sandwich with Larissa as the filling..." DYING
28:25 That dog is the real MVP
Watching this in 2020 is way too real
Just to let you know, I'm playing a grueling Total War: Attila campaign at the same time as these are going out and every time you say 'that's something you don't see in later games' I am trying to find it in Attila. Attila has almost everything you miss from ROME (except the nuanced population stuff). Now, I'm not saying that Attila would make a good sequel to this series but if you WERE to do another Total War series immediately after this, I'd recommend Attila.
honestly been counting the days inbetween these episodes. gib more rome 👍
12:05 nope, the Pontics are closer to Armenia and Colchis, they start with Sinope and Mazaka
29:50 They didn't instantly flee because they were surrounded and were fighting to the death.
the command stat also buffs up the generals morale bonus for his army. with 10 command troops will almost always fight to the last man when the general is nearby
who do you deal with devastation?
Jon should play mount and blade warband like if you agree so Jon can see this.
It is fairly similar in some ways and he could do it as his next strategy series.
Nachocheese What are you? I went Vaegir after I found out Nords were so underdefended.
Biological Warfare in Rome.
"Dominus?! What did you just propose? We're supposed to get our spy infected with the plague and move the poor lad from city to city? That's... probably the meanest and most despicable idea I've ever heard of, Dominus!... Brilliant! Let's do it!"
Help! The Macedonians are here! And they brought ice cream cones!
If you get this you are a legend
"When large part of Europe is infected with the plague it was lots of fun" MATN. Priceless
Do you think you will ever mess around with the Roman Ninja units and Gladiators when you get to the Marian reforms and arena buildings?
Jon when you sallied you didn't use your peltasts. I know they are not very good but they are ranged and with no cavalry the greeks have no counter. Just something to keep in mind.
I got new headphones recently and just noticed the music in the background
