I still look at Rome 1 and I like the graphics, they're still very good. There's games that come out nowadays with worse grpahics.
And I'd rather them be clones than with say, Rome II's logic of "this dude has heavy armour, this dude is almost naked"

+150booyadragon yeah I half agree there, but I reccomend a re skin mod for those units that annoy you. I know people hate how some hastati and prinicipes men in a unit sport a 'pot' like helmet but...its historically accurate. some men were poor and some had more money, thus the marius reforms.

What I love about this game (apart from everything) is the fact that when it came out, I thought "this isn't possible", and yet it was and the machine I had could run it reasonably well. So many great memories. Coming from the original Medieval, this was a huge leap forward and was a stand-out title back then and stands out even now as being a great game. Love it. :)
As far as the replenishment goes, I quite liked how Empire handled it, as in it could happen anywhere in your territory, but you had to instigate it and pay for it and then it took two turns. Made it more of a problem to solve than just waiting.

    • @lunarixis9957

I'd say the Julii are the easiest, at least prior to the civil war, you constantly go toe-to-toe with barb units, which for the most part aren't armoured well, and are weak af to missile fire. They also will never have stone walls, so besieging settlements is a lot easier. Granted, the Julii are kind of gimped by the fact that they can't build experience or weapon/armour boosting shrines (though you can keep, say, a +3 missile attack grove from the Gauls), and the fact that, since most settlements you take are inland, you don't get much sea trade, but all in all they face easier forces in battle, in my opinion at least.

I think you nailed perfectly what made this game so great. So easy to immerse yourself from running cities, family members, the music, seeing landmarks when fighting a battle (like fighting on Rhodes or the west coast of Asia Minor and seeing the wonders and nearby fleets in the water while fighting a battle? FUCKING AWESOME!) etc. Even the next game in the series Medieval 2 felt like a little bit of at step back (ex: cities are A LOT easier to keep in line). It's a pity Rome II fell flat on it's face because this game really deserved some updated loving

To win the brutti campaign quickly and easily do the following.1 The first city to take is Athens at the start you will be neutral/friendly with both Greece and macedon so you should be able to reach Athens by ship easily.2 after taking Athens ally/stay friendly with macedon and prepare an army to take sparta Greece should not have a large army defending it.3 After taking sparta move on to take on macedon Greece is out of the runijng with only thermon and maybe an army left.4 with macedon defeated and thermon taken you should have uncontested ownership of Greece/macedon 5 With Greece/macedon your money problems for the rest of the game are over.6 Ally with Thrace and prepare for war with pontus.7 once prepared for war with pontus cross the ocean and invade pontus with agood mix of infantry/archers and some cavalry pontus should be relatively easy to take.8 After defeating
eutralizing Pontus repare for war with Egypt. Egypt will be your most difficult foe at this stage.9 use a two pronged invasion have one army besiege Alexandria by ship (should not be very well defended) and one army attack from the former lands of pontus. Alexandria should be easy to take . After Alexandria move on to Take the other two Egyptian city. Fortify the city you took from in the attack from the former land of pontus and be prepared to defend it from the large egyptian armies that will come.10 move on up to pontus with the army you deployed to Alexandria and take/sack egyptian settlements at this time Egypt will soon run out of money.11 Once you have weathered the egyptian armies and egypt runs out of money conquest should be easy.12 After egypt move on to Armenia and Parthia They will have strong armies but few settlements.13 Take one Thrace and then move on to scythia or Dacia which ever of the two is still alive at this stage. you should have 30 + settlements at this time and nearly unlimited gold.14 once you reach 50 settlements train armies to take rome .

I opened up with Brutti by having 1 army taking Epona and then the rest of Greece. 1 army taking the Balkans then moving on to the Po valley. and 1 army sacking Syracuse and all the Carthaginian cities. After about 10 turns you basically have infinite money.

Interesting reading how people have their own strats, i’ve recently been grinding this game and I developed a strategy to expand north right away and have been able to take Apollonia, Salona, Segestica, and Patavium all by the end of turn 6 with the faction leader, basically the entire starting army and the spy. I think its another solid starting strategy to get quick money especially with Patavium growing at a crazy rate you’re able to pump out peasants to disband at Salona and Segestica for faster growth.

From tests it appears to be a tool to minimize pressure on your CPU. Aka large battles tend to have a delay until some units are killed. Small battles no delay is needed. This is experienced based, not game files

What they could do with replenishment is the units get 0 exp after you recruit them and get up to like 10 after a year of training. If you go to a battle with them you don't get unit exp but every person has its own exp so after you fight a battle and lose 20% of your units and replenish them you will have 80% of the units exp at 18 or something and 20% at 0 making the unit's exp 14 after the battle. Also instead of just being a modifier units with more exp could fight better visually. That'd be really cool.

Looking forward to this Legend. Like you I'm a bigger fan of Rome and Medieval II than Attila and Rome's sequel. Looking forward to this. As a side note, have you been considering going back and doing another "normal" M2TW game in the near future? Your HRE series was pretty cool, I think it'd be nice to see another series there. Maybe Venice or a Muslim state? Just something I'd like to see.

Is there any way to turn adblock off on a particular channel? Ads annoy me, especially the ones for free versions of Minecraft as of lately, but I really would like to support Legend. Should I uninstall adblock? I really don't want to give it up, but I feel bad for using it, so I'm not sure.

Ok quick question. I noticed when you click on a unit to move it around the battlefield you have this yellow pattern appear on the ground which shows how you want to arrange the pattern and direction of the unit you're moving. Which key or button are you clicking in order to do that?

I enjoy the older games. I started playing Rome the other day because Rome II has ben problematic for me since the last update over a year ago (I think). My favorite is the original Medieval TW because of the immersion, the atmosphere of the game was incredible.

They can have a maximum of 8 retinues, not 6.
Also I hope we get to see 3 gold chevrons again this campaign! How badass would it be to make a 3 gold chevron full urban cohort army? :D I´d always tried doing it but the campaign always ended before it was possible haha. Please do it!

yeah, the general traits were the best. if you used one general a lot, his traits would tell his whole story. and you really felt it when a good, long-time general died of old age or from battle.

You could consider doing mod campaigns with more limited goals than conquering the whole map, perhaps? Generally the last half or two thirds are just snowballing/roflstomping anyway, so you could consider just setting yourself challenges like "conquer 20 settlements in 6 turns in EB" or whatever. Solves the problem with the campaign length, but it lets you play mods.

piasecznik I second this, even this campaign should have been like either short campaign or campaign that doesn't necessarily extend all the way to the civil war

Good to see you going back to a classic I miss the day when CA put real effort into the actual strategy and depth. Personally I think the older games look better, just about every damn settlement in Attila looks like they pilled a bunch of shit, wood, twigs in a ugly mound and called it a city.

It seems the pathfinding gets extra fucked when approaching the town plaza for some reason. My units always tend to go and tap the enemy on their shoulders saying "I'm here, dude, come and get me!" instead of orderly going into formation... Ah, but then again that's what makes this game so good imho xD

Hey Legend, I don't know if you've heard of OfficiallyDevin but he's a TW RUclipsr who has made an audiobook about his backseat game design of Rome III should it ever get released. It does take years to listen through (6hrs-ish) but it is very interesting.

No. But they do have one or two units unique to each faction.

Should try doing this with the Darth Mod. Adds a lot of great variations and "historical" changes, while not really making it last longer, just more of a challenge.

I found my favourite tactic was to close the other Romans in by taking the settlements they take first, generally that halts the other Romans from expanding that much. that means those strong factions are much easier to deal with (since they have a smaller economy)
