MATN total war episode: 33% talking about how great it is 33% using archers to murder enemies 33% talking about how crappy his generals are 1% "slamming into the rear"
One of the things I loved about RTW combat (And MTW2, which used the same engine) is how mechanistic it is. The unit takes a swing and it compares attack vs defense, weapon vs armour etc. The beauty of that is that is did a great job of modelling the advantage of outnumbering the foe; if you have more troops than the enemy, multiple soldiers can take swings at the same guy, giving a greater chance of killing him quickly. Starting with Empire, this was no longer the case. Units in melee selected one opponent and engaged in a series of pre-canned choreographed combat animations. It looked much prettier, but it meant that your men couldn't gang up on the enemy any longer, as units were locked into a series of one-on-one duels. It made flanking and surrounding enemy units far less effective for anything other than trying to break morale.
You see the title is funny because he fought a bunch of horses in this episode in the area where Troy is thought to have been. I see what you did there Mr. Mat.
Orders his infantry away from hopelites to save them, then spends so much time looking for the general that he lets them get slaughtered until the 4 remaining guys break. Then edits it out so no one will notice.. i noticed jon.. i noticed. Love the vids btw :)
I think the smart play would be to attack Egypt. Take the islands, control the Mediterranean, fight them on the seas with a nice powerful Navy. Let the Pontus take the brunt of the army, you can sweep up Pontus after the Egyptians have been taken care of. You said it yourself they have little relevant cavalry, mostly infantry. A few well arranged units of archers with the right terrain and they'll melt before the might of Rome.
I'm not mean. Jon's just that sort of person. It's great he came up with the title, but he's known for doing such things. He says such things on the Patreon casts and Podcats. Like how he purposefully mispronounces Arkansas and coyote despite being told otherwise. I still think Jon is great, but it became clear when he passed up the greatest possible title of "All Rhodes Lead To Rome." when we suggested it on the subreddit. He used none of the titles from the guessing game on that one nor this video either. I still enjoy the bastard, but sometimes he is one. :P

I love how you infuse the game with your historical knowledge and funny commentary. Reaaaaaaally looking forward to another playthrough with a different faction :)
Megagig He's talking about who might be besieging the city, not who currently owns it. Besides, he can see who it holding a settlement by holding right-click anywhere in the territory. As he is doing. And as he described right at the beginning of the series.
I love this game and just happened to stumble on this series. This is pure entertainment! I can not stop watching. The commentary is absolutely hilarious. Im literally watching someone else play a game & loving every second of it. Bravo!
I always set fort with one cheap unit at every ford or mountain pass on the border. It often stops the enemy on at least one turn, or infinitely if the army travels from one fort to another.
Jon I bet you get this allot but You are honestly my favorite youtuber. I love watching all of your content. Every time I see a video it brings a smile to my face. So keep on keepen on Jon.
i find Jon's play style refreshing to me since when i play rome total war i always just rush to the marian reforms no matter the family because Legionaries and its interesting to see someone playing properly XD
Hey Jon whats the earliest you've managed to get the marian reforms. I managed to get it around 250BC but I've no idea what the game requirement is. So I'm basically conquering Pontus with real roman legionaries really early in the game.
It's a Roman faction hitting Level 5 city. So basically just rush to a high growth area (Alexandria, Patavium, etc), don't train any troops, and invest in all the growth boosting tech (including religious tech) as early as possible. Plus, ensure you have the Wonder for 5-turn-plus build time reduction.
JoeJackAttack I just want to see a playthrough that takes place in the other side of the map becuase we didn't really get to experience it a lot from where he is now and he said they were a really good faction to go with. I would also love to see him do other Total War games. Heck, I'd love it if this channel just became a Total War channel.
In BI, each layer of academy gives an extra 5% to public happiness via law, which is important, because higher law reduces corruption. They're vital to the WRE, as they both cut into the massive losses from corruption, which start almost as high as the cost of the empire's army, and fix the fact that all of it's starting leaders are, without fail, terrible.
Our beloved Spurius could be even more invincible if he got the "horribly scarred" trait (a direct upgrade from "been in the wars"). That would give him another 7 hitpoints I believe.
I believe that big ole river is the Drava River which drains from the Alps and runs through a system of lakes along the Croatian-Hungarian border until it intersects with the Danube and dumps into the Black Sea. Or does that big river system represent the Una and the Danube? I've never really compared maps until this video, so thanks to Jon for inspiring a little geography.
Hey Jon I'm pretty new to this channel I've started watching about 3 months and I've hooked since. To take what I originally thought was a boring game and able to bring it to life is your gift and even games where I've put hundreds of hours into like new vegas and make me so good damn stupid is pretty cool. Keep doing what your doing! (Also I'm loving the extra Rome:total war day)
You should attack Egypt in their homeland. They leave it defenseless. You also need to use ship to blockade the ports. It staves them to death and they can no long spam armies out of no where.
Does no one else get a massive sense of deja vu from this episode? I feel like Jon destroyed Pergamum last episode, and made the exact same comments about it being underdeveloped but with a temple of Hermes. Have I gone slightly mad since yesterday?
I think you DO get notified if a faction is destroyed, and you just missed the notification. I'm playing as the Julii and expanding into Gaul and was notified that the Seleucids were destroyed.
I believe that academies have an additional benefit, that is not explicitly stated in their description: they seem to lower corruption in cities. Their effect isn't instantaneous, so that's probably why they don't tell you outright, just some "the city is run by better and more qualified men" or something like that, but I definitely felt it in the late game after a couple turns, managing to almost completely eradicate corruption in Egypt. Any experience with this anyone?
Actually, the game sends you a message if a faction has been destroyed even if you aren't the one who killed them, or at least it does for me - it actually has different text based on who did it. If someone else has killed them, the text is along the lines of "An enemy is gone, but perhaps only to be replaced by those who defeated them" whereas (if you are roman) the text is more along the lines of "An enemy of rome has been vanquished, this is a glorious day!"
when it is Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday, I get so happy, then when the video ends I feel empty, I hope you do more Rome: Total War after you finish the Brutii. I want you to do what others have said which is do a campaign for each of the factions.
Short campaign is good enough for unlocking everybody. In fact, before I found out about the text file trick (Which was a shame I didn't figure it out earlier, because the factions that are marked as unplayable tend to be more interesting than the PLAYABLE factions, for some reason) I would just play a short campaign as the Julii and quickly tear my way through the Gauls just to unlock the other factions.
Bruh, they're not getting pushed off the walls, at least not in the militia hoplites case. They were actually running off the wall, preferring suicide to getting killed by your troops. Always thought it was an amazing little detail.
Remember one playthrough of this game where I besieged carthage and sandwiched a hoplite unit on the walls between two principes. Glorious seeing all of them get pushed off the walls
There's definitely more unplayable factions than that - I'm almost certain that Pontus, Spain, Thrace and Dacia are unplayable without tweaks to the backend files.
According to the wiki " Macedon, Pontus, Armenia, Numidia, Scythia, Dacia, Thrace, Spain, the Senate of Rome" are unplayable. Well, without tweaks, though playing as the senate just doesn't work even if you force it.
Sorry, yes. Just booted it up and checked - Pontus, Armenia, Scythia, Dacia, and Spain area also unplayable. I must have a fuzzy memory, as I swear I've played as Spain before without tweaks, but it would seem that it is my mind remembering things that never happened. Funny how it does that...
I really love your series! I've watched all of them and I love your analytical assessment. Keep up the awesome work! (I wish this could be a general post but unfortunately it's not!)
There's a good two parter video, "Treatise on Rome 2", which talks about the failings of Rome 2 and why it's so disappointing compared to Rome Total War. The guy also talks about the intricacies and details that RTW had, though he focuses on the battles - IE campaign positioning, and the ways the units fight. I think you'd like it, Jon.
a way that you could have completed that senate mission would have been to offer a ceasefire but demand an impossible price for it maybe 90 000 denarii for 10 turns. the computer wouldn't be able to accept it, and if miraculously it did and had that much money you would get 90k a turn.
Patrick Fadgen Actually not that hard, everyone throws everything at you in the beginning, so after they're moped up you can conquer the middle east fairly easily
My most recent Julii campaign is pretty interesting, my empire currently stretches in a straight line from Lemonum to Byzantium. It is incredibly annoying to defend.
No Jon, you always are told whether a faction is destroyed. I can 100% guarantee it. You must have missed it earlier in the game. I also missed it, but it still it happens. I'm always told when I'm playing Parthia that the gauls are defeated, or germany, or whomever that happens to fall and yet is way away from me.
Hey Jon, are you using the disk version of the game or the steam version? If you are using the steam version, how did you get around the performance issue that most people are having?
17:45 -- Hastate you can do better than this you're embarassing yourself Soldier: Maybe, Commander, if you didn't send us alone when we had two thousand soldiers behind us, some of whom were _spearmen_ when we were fighting cavalry!
Think of it this way: Once a person dies of sickness or has to leave cause of old age, a new person would be happy to join. Getting 160 men could take a while, but one random person is easy to get.

Travis Sloan I think Jon should start buying his enemies dinner with the amount of "slamming into the rear" he does.
Travis Sloan 10% "The Game cheats"
And the most boring man in the world
Can't go wrong with a bit of rear slamming,
I just realized what the symbol on the flag for the Greek Cities is.

That river is called the Danube. It's where the Romans put their boundary as well.
Its called Dunav but that is how other countries pronnounce it. (the way you said it)
That's the Sava/Savus, the Danube is a tad further up north in Pannonia.
This is a roller coaster of river names.
it joins the Danube down stream
its the same river bro

Thanks to you Jon i have decided to do Classics for A Level and possibly for a degree.
Yay!
Just a warning, as someone currently doing the A level I can tell you that it's mostly just about plays and essentially completely focused on Greece.
@@Cazadorian I do classics gcse and it’s about 80% Greece tbh

I'm missing the general's speeches.. Can we have more of those please?

Yeah, Machiavelli said to destroy your stronger enemies, and keep your weaker enemies around, but don't let them get stronger.
