    This series made me buy the entire Total War saga. I can now say that if you think the Scipii have an unfair starting mission, consider Spain in medieval 2, who are literally told to kill a guy who is to this day a legend in Spanish culture due to his military achievments.

    Jon, the Anger trait is generated by the Temple of Mars building line. Any family member in a city with a temple to a violent god (including Mars) has a 10% chance to pick up Anger. They may also pick up Bloody or Lively. Lively is supposed to have the highest chance to pop (15%) but I always seem to get Anger on everyone.

    in case anyone out there is wondering what the 7 wonders of the ancient world do here is a list for you.
    1) Statue of Zeus: provides +4 loyalty (public order basically) in all settlements
    2) Colossus of Rhodes: all income from naval trade is increased by 40%
    3) mausoleum of Halicarnassus: reduces construction times by 20% for all buildings that require 5 or more turns to complete
    4) Temple of Artemis: construction costs on all religious buildings is decreased by 30%
    5)Hanging Gardens of Babylon: increases income from agriculture by 20%
    6) Great Lighthouse of Alexandria: decreases likelyhood of all nearby ships sinking and increases movement range of all naval units
    7) Great Pyramids at Giza: +4 Loyalty of all Egyptian peoples to the owning faction.

    • @tuurekeranen1771

      You'reThatMantis Rhodes alone is maddeningly good, ALL naval trade +40%?! Even if it was that one province that would be worth going to war for. I wonder why Jon hasn't nabbed it yet.

    @oneofmanyjames-es1643 8 лет назад +196

    I have a quick tip about wardogs, because a couple of episodes ago you used them against cavalry and I died a little. Here are the best times to deploy wardogs:
    - Once the enemy has broken, as the hounds will chase down the routing force.
    - From behind enemy lines as the enemy is marching toward you (provided you can sneak them around somehow), this will force the AI into either breaking their battle line to deal with the hounds, or let them nibble away at ranged infantry like Cretan Archers. The AI will usually choose the latter.
    You can, of course, deploy them to charge into the melee but they will die quick in that situation.

    • @ManyATrueNerd
      @ManyATrueNerd  8 лет назад +90

      Definitely good ideas - especially archers, though I prefer to use them more simply; purely as pressure to apply to one point where I want to start a break, throwing infantry, cavalry and dogs simultaneously at the weakest flank...

    • @witchitahable
      @witchitahable 8 лет назад +113

      Or, as 11 year old me used to love doing. Just have a 20 stack army of dogs follow your main force around and set them loose as soon as the fight starts because its hilarious.

      @kyteillingworth 8 лет назад +27

      Oh shit that's a great idea. I usually have two armies following each other round, mainly to replenish troops if needed, but avoid fighting with both because the AI just charges in and doesn't really work with you - two thousand wardogs charging into the enemy at the start of a battle though...

    jon the reinforcements were AI controlled even though you turned it off because when you look at the enemies units on the pre battle screen it turns on the AI even though it says it's turned off its just a wee glitch so instead just look at the units before you attack and then turn off the AI without looking at their units

    I remember first time I heard that this series is going to be 3 times a week. I was giggling like a child hearing that. Back then I thought, "Now I don't have to worry about not having things to watch.", and it made me pick up this game more frequently.
    Life has been different since that day for me. Becaming an adult, physically and age-wise at least, I can't just sit down and watch a full long video in RUclips anymore. But, returning to watch this series once again at least ease the stress that was brought by adult life and giving me the same feeling I had like my first time watching. Thank you very much, Jon. Depending on where you aim to take the Brutii, it may be worth getting catapult ranges, and having two to three units of Onagers in siege armies. Yes they move slower, but you can sit at a safe distance and take down a good couple of wall sections, plus accompanying towers with them. Also, it is fun to watch garrison units standing on walls fall to their deaths when the walls give way!
    Of course, Onagers aren't good against barbarian cities as I don't think they ever get stone walls. But you can do a similar tactic with standard Ballistas.

    • @HRPufnsting
      @HRPufnsting 8 лет назад +1

      Siege equipment definitely slow you down a little but they are nice to have, its funny to see an onager send a shot into a line of infantry and see them get blast arounded.

    • @Gorbz
      @Gorbz 8 лет назад +1

      If I can, I have two armies moving around the map together - one for dealing with armies, and the other for besieging cities. It s a strain on cash and, with large armies on, really sucks down that population

      Wy Vern Indeed, but Gorbz mentioned how Siege weapons are less useful against barbarians because they don't build Stone walls, and I pointed out that they can't if I'm not mistaken. Obviously there is still the Greeks, Egyptians and all of that.

    Indirect fire is aiming and firing a projectile without relying on a direct line of sight between the gun and its target, as in the case of direct fire. Aiming is performed by calculating azimuth and elevation angles, and may include correcting aim by observing the fall of shot and calculating new angles.

    Run the army leader out the back gate, keep all other units at town centre. Once you run your general out the back gate the entire enemy army will run after you, wait a bit before you go back into city. Along the way the wall arrow boxes take out enemy. Just keep them chasing you around the city and you'll wipe them out. You can do this with forts too, ive destroyed thousands of enemies with one unit many times. :) you can sally forth 3 times per turn too

    Jon, I think I know why the reinforcing units were AI controlled. Its because you clicked on the mark for them being player controlled and after that you looked at the greeks army roster which makes the reinforcements AI controlled again, after you look at the enemys army roster you have to recheck the marker again for your reinforcements to be controlled by you.

    If you have AI control checked off in the battle balance screen and then look at the enemy forces, it may be switched on again, so it's always handy to check it on and off again before starting battle.
    also, the trick for going head-to-head with roman infantry vs. hoplites is Guard Mode. This means they keep their shields up against the spears and tire the hoplites and don't get skewered too much. you can then flank them with cav. alternatively, if you keep your infantry units 3-4 ranks deep, they may have a broader frontage than the phalanx and wrap round, once that happens, switch of guard mode and see the greeks die.

    Here's a tip for anyone stuck with a broken retail edition of Rome or Medieval 2. You can input the CD Key on steam to receive the steam edition for free. You're welcome.

    I just wanted to say that at least in part, your playthrough of Rome here has gotten me to go back to a couple of my old favorites. I've already re-installed Age of Mythology, and when I finish the campaign, I'm probably going to reinstall Medieval 2: Total War. So thanks :)

    if you you want to kill the gliched men that are still on the battlefield, you should use "guard" mode on the chasing unit. this makes sure they kill any enemy within the formation. hopes it save you some time! keep up the good work !

    I do miss Steve Jon, from when you had the flu. He seemed a bright lad, bristling with fresh ideas. I hope you lay your scene on Capua soon for he was last seen discussing comunist politics there on the forum.

    Your reinforcements were being commanded by Narces, it would seem lol. And tbf during that sally, you literally told the Hastati to stand at the gate and said if anyone wanted to fight them it was fine. Brave guys were just following orders lol

    Jon! Last episode you made a big point about using the Rally Troops ability of generals to keep the general in the middle or rear of a charge formation, but this episode I don't think I saw you do it even once! Your generals were at risk far too often during that sally.

    • @mistahsusan2650
      @mistahsusan2650 8 лет назад

      The rally ability is limited to just two IIRC...

    once you charge with your general you can press alt and attack the unit they charged, the general unit will switch their weapon sword and will be incredibly effective without keep charging over and over
    check it by the way, because not every unit can, but if they do, they kick ass

    The reason your reinforcements were AI controlled in the first battle was because you looked at the enemy army page (where you can see all their units) after you unticked the AI control box. It doesn't actually show it, but that apparently resets your reinforcements back to AI controlled. It makes no sense why that happens, but it does.
    if you just tick and untick the box again it should be fine.

    To be honest this may be my favorite non fallout series you've ever done. I hope you follow this up with a medieval 2 campaign or maybe a modded version of Rome. Europa Barbarorum for Rome is great and Stainless Steel is amazing for medieval 2.
