Lots of requests for this one. I'm analyzing and reacting to Hannibal. Hannibal Lecter is probably the most famous forensic psychiatrist in TV and film, but please be reassured, most of us aren't serial killers and cannibals. Interestingly, this episode depicted him as a very good psychiatrist - probably something to helps him blend in and for his crimes to go unnoticed.
This episode covers mental illnesses such as PTSD and even a bit of physical medicine such as a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Hope you like!

Hannibal is very much a gentleman serial killer. The jokingly motto of this show while it aired was, "Eat the rude." Mikkelsen said that he played Hannibal like he was Lucifer and tempting Will to sin. And throughout the series you see him slowly trying to twist Will into becoming like him. The Devil metaphor came up frequently. And.....yeah, that wasn't chicken they were eating..... Again, it fit in the Hannibal = Lucifer theme. He tempts you with the most delicious, elegant looking meals only later you find out the meat was human.
Ironically Hannibal can also be quite rude/petty as well

yeah, from Hannibal's view he's shaping Will into something More. he sees potential in Will, and he wants to use it, but he also wants to see just how much Will can evolve.

They get away from the “monster of the week” procedural pretty quickly. There’s none of that in seasons two or three. It’s amazing they got this show on television. If you can stomach it, watch it all. It’s batshit crazy.

Imo, it doesn't really even have the same boring aspects 0f the monster of the week formula bc everything contributes to the main villains plan (Hannibal) or the main characters...development lol

Hannibal minimazing Will's ptsd actually alligns with his plan - he wanted to gaslight and alienate Will enough to play around with his illness
On one hand, I get what you mean but on the other, I kinda feel like sometimes we minimize shit not to say it isn't there but to not make the other person feel bad about it. I assumed it was just that, more innocent.
@@operationada Hannibal isn't "we" though. He's a very specific character written in a quite intentional way by the showrunner. Season 1 Hannibal is shown to be gaslighting/manipulating Will from the very beginning. We literally see him hiding MRIs and clock-drawing tests on a consistent basis. So, yeah, the OP is 100% correct. The minimizing is intentional on Hannibal's part.

I think he didn't watch the first episode. In which they also suggest he might be on the spectrum.
@@papl20 Hugh Dancy said in an interview that Will IS NOT on the spectrum. He isn't. How do I know? Because I am. Also Hugh played a role who WAS on the spectrum some time before (watch Adam) and did his research for the part. Will uses it as a means to stop people seeing him as he REALLY is. You tell people 'yeah I'm on the spectrum, i'm weird.' And they stop looking to label you. That's what happened. If you read the book Red Dragon you get a real sense of the character - whereas Hugh's job is to make the audience LIKE him. I've rewatched this show many times and keep appreciating it for different reasons etc, and I honestly like the fact Will is a snarky bitter bitch. Sure he has glimpses of decency but he's really troubled deep down and he mirrors Hannibal is his 'dysfunctional functionality' and how he doesn't fit into society as we know it.
@@fadelessdreamer oh I agree with you 100%, I expressed myself incorrectly, what I meant was that the doctor stated Will was on the spectrum, and it sounded as if he thought it was something novel, when in reality the show suggested it in the first minutes of episode 1. Still the show did put that idea, very intentionally I think, to throw the audience off, but hopefully people who know even a little bit of autism spectrum or are neurodivergent and curious enough to do some research, are aware that Will uses this to keep people out. Maybe season 1 can confuse some but by season 2 one knows Will is most definitely NOT on the spectrum. On re-watch you can see it even clearer that Will's true colors have always been there. I've also read the books (that's what attracted me to the show in the first place when it was released) but I see the books, the movies and the show as three entirely separate creatures.
TV and movie leads are all too often portrayed as emotionless. Will getting his power from his emotions is a Hollywood rarity!

I know you were making the funny (and it hit, I lol'd) - but just to be clear I think he was using grandiose in the psychological sense, where someone "wrongly holds themselves at an extraordinarily high status in their mind." - Fair dues to Hannibal, he is erudite and sophisticated and excellent at murder, but he is not God, or even 'a' god among many, and he seems to be equating himself (and by extension Will, or vice versa) to God in a sense with that scene - hence "well that's a bit grandiose"
You should totally watch the whole show.
They have a few "killer of the week" episodes to introduce the characters, but it becomes something else entirely a few episodes in and season 2 and 3 are something else entirely.
The cinematoraphy is great, the cast is excellent and it's pretty gay.
Edit: Also Hannibal is such a shit psychiatrist, it's hilarious to watch.
He tells Franklin with his Anxiety basically: "You have to try to be less anxious."
i mean his whole thing is generally making sick people worse, and franklin was probably just a coverup
@@pemo2676 He has quite a good reputation so I think he has to do his job properly at some point - but you're right, I think he weeds out his patients for those he could manipulate to murder someone.

He had the full intention of killing Franklin eventually, Franklin triggered an instinctive rejection to weakness in Hannibal, he was also overstepping the border between doctor and patient by stalking Hannibal and showing up at places just to meet him outside of a clinical context and seeking his friendship, he was also rude, not purposefully so but unintentionally prone to social faux pas due to his awkwardness and anxiety disorder and this irked Hannibal heavily; he was itching to kill him since day one and he was making him worse on purpose or at the very least wasn't very interested in helping him.
Guys, don't give everything away lol let him find out for himself and Hannibal didn't tell Franklin to be "less anxious." He talked about how "Franklin, you have to convince yourself the lion is not in the room. When it is, I assure you, you will know." Let's not take the eloquence out of the show, please. The writing is brilliant.

To be fair... Eating people doesn't breach confidentiality agreements. I am FINALLY in much needed therapy, and in all the paper work I signed there was no section where it said that my Therapist was not allowed to eat me... However there is a great deal of agreements made in regards to confidentiality :)

Hannibal is a slow burn of a show. A very good one in that. I recommend watching the whole show. The micro expressions of both, Hannibal and Will are amazing.

One of my favorite examples of this was that one scene where Mason stabs the chair with a knife. Paying attention to Hannibal, his annoyance is very subtle but it's there and it makes me laugh because he just looks annoyed/flabbergasted for a brief second
Agree! The micro expressions are so subtle that you aren't even fully aware of how your perspective has been shifted by a flick of a glance to the side.
Hannibal is less interested in helping Will and treating his condition, he wants to use it to his own advantage. The more Will is struggling, the more he can be manipulated.
When Hannibal and Will were discussing Will’s ‘empathy disorder’ they weren’t talking about him LACKING empathy but instead having too much. He gets into the heads of serial killers to catch them and it affects his mental health.
They say that Will has too many special neutrons in his brain that we have as babies to pick up on other people and to mimic their actions but lose as we grow up. Will didn’t lose his and now feels what everyone else is feeling. It’s why he avoids people and is so good at his job.
It’s weird science and is probably BS but that’s the shows reasoning why Will is so affected paired with his autism/Asperger’s.
Watch the whole show. Its really good. The thing you should focus about is the chemistry between Will and hannibal and how in each episode a new killer is effecting Will. Hannibal is manipulating Will, so dont take it like how a psychiatrist should treat their patients. Please watch the whole show. Would love more of your analysis of second season.

i agree that they showed hannibal being a very good psychiatrist! the thing with hannibal in this show is that he is a very skilled doctor, its just that a lot of the time hes on purpose manipulating patients because he enjoys winding them up and watching them go. this was a very interesting reaction and if you ever feel like reacting to more of hannibal, you’d definitely have one viewer here!

Hannibal is an amazing show throughout the first two seasons. Season two has one of the best finales in the history of television in my opinion.
If they had stopped the entire show at the end of season 2 it would have been simultaneously the greatest and most frustrating moment of TV ever.
I recently saw a commentary about how ticking sounds are all over the s2 soundtrack as a reminder how the season is avalanching to what we were shown in s2ep1. There are so many details that make the final ep almost feel like fate but also consequences to the characters actions.
If I remember correctly, there's stuff in the very first episode of the show that doesn't get revealed until season two, ie: the swinging pendulum that Hannibal uses to hypnotize Will. I may be wrong, but I think they start building to that in the very beginning but don't show it until season two.
for real, season 3 was fun because it was more hannibal but i feel like it should’ve ended after season 2.
The third season gets too much flack in my opinion, the first four episodes were hit or miss but episode five and on had some of the best episodes of the series - and the finale was more satisfying IMO
For other S1 episodes, I might suggest Episode 6("Entrée"), because it introduces Dr. Chilton to contrast with Hannibal and Episode 8("Fromage") because you see Hannibal with another patient(who you also see in Ep 1) AND Dr. Du Maurier.
I would also just recommend the show to watch on your own time because it's excellent.
Conversely, we should recommend the whole show

I didn't read the books but the Chilton in the series was just too insignificant of a character to exist. I don't like the implications of any potential contrast I'd have between Chilton and practically anyone else. He didn't have enough substance, enough meat. Hannibal would have fed him to a pig and eaten the pig.
the episodes that i would say get more into hannibal’s medical malpractice (well, worse than what you saw) are the episodes in season one that work toward the finale or the middle of season two!

Malpractice is such an understatement to describe what happens
The amount of essays written by fellow fannibals makes me laugh so hard and yet I am reading every single one of them.
The big thing about the show (especially in season one) is while Hannibal is the Bad Guy and Jack's supposedly the Good Guy he's not. He's disregarding clear signs of distress in his team, doesn't aknowledge his errors (Myriam Lass or Will later in the show) and pushed both too far that he lost one and broke the other, still not showing an ounce of regret for what he did because it was for some Greater Good.
That's why he brings will back to Garret's shack even though he probably have PTSD, that's why he pushes him even though he's sick later in the season.
Hannibal though a dubious ethical therapist in my opinion make actually a great decision on sharing his emotions to Will.
Will is very guarded about therapy and therapist which he sees as one way exchange, he probably had terrible experiences with other therapist to get so defensive, Hannibal brush that off and make it a conversation between adults like he says in other episode, first because he's not officially Will's therapist and second because he knows that with that approach he will open Will more to him. It's probably not good therapy, but that's not Hannibal's goal, his goal is to understand will, gain his trust, get close to him and experiment on him because Will's peculiar and always surprise him.
The show has an interesting stand, because while Hannibal is morally bad, he's the best thing that happened to Will because Will is the same as him, minus the fact that Will repressed it. He's what people expect to see of him : Jack sees an emotionally unstable man and that's what he is, Alana see a poor broken puppy that needs protection and that's what he is.
Because yes, Will's not that broken puppy he shows himself to be in the first season, lots of people says he became twisted because of Hannibal but for me Will always was "twisted", and was just very good at hiding it to others (and maybe himself)
I just want to say that you’re 100% correct, I’ve watched the show 5 times and seeing people blatantly misunderstand Will’s character is so frustrating
There is a difference between Will enjoying killing Hobbs and the desires that Hannibal expresses and acts upon. Assuming that Will did actually enjoyed it and it is not no emotion that he attached himself to help him deal with his guilt - we don't actually see to what extent Will "becomes" the serial killers who he hunts. The are also also two important episodes which reflect Hannibals motivation in general and towards Will Graham.
9:16 - note that first he asks if Will told Jack. THEN he minimizes what is obviously not something to minimize. You would LOVE this show. It’s basically an elaborate psychological game of chess. Ethical? No. Polite? To the extreme.
Honestly I hope you react to the entire series. It’s so good.

the writing is the best i've ever seen/heard on TV. truly, out of this fucking world man. i wish i knew more people that were so educated.
This is one of my favorite shows. And yeah there's a serial killer for each arc. If you're comfortable or okay with watching the gory parts I'd love to see more reactions to the show
I love how the serial killers always reflect some issue going on with the main cast, the episode where Jack realises what is going on with Bella is a highlight.

I would love to see you react to Hannibal in its entirety; it’s my favorite show and apart from the psychological thriller elements, it’s also just deeply queer. If you’re looking for specific episodes in season 1, 1x4 “Oeuf” might be a good starting point since it’s not too far out. I truly think you could find so much to talk about in every episode, but I’m greedy 🤷🏼
Also, a note: Will is canonically portrayed as both potentially autistic and possessing “pure empathy,” which the show defines as having the ability to empathize completely with anyone, including killers, and to assume their points of view, which is often difficult and painful. Bryan Fuller (the show’s creator) has said some messed up things about how Will couldn’t actually be autistic since he’s so empathetic, but a lot of fans (including me) disagree with Fuller and still see Will as an autistic character.
As an autistic person I was once ruled out of being autistic for being too empathetic too- by mental health professionals. Me and an autistic friend really loved Will for actually seeming to be a really accurate (if completely murderous) portrayal, or at least having a lot of very relatable behaviours whilst getting to be a character with full agency. I feel like non-autistic people can never really write autism because they don't understand it's more that just a list of symptoms, or the complex internal side of it because they can't live it (however good the intension), thus for me the most relatable characters have always been ones creators say are almost autistic but not quite- because they end up written as full characters not characterised symptoms.
I wholeheartedly agree with watching Oeuf next. There's lots and lots to talk about in that episode.
Hugh Dancy has also said that Will is not autistic. It has nothing to do with his empathy or stereotypes concerning the empathy of autistic people. Will is dishonest. He does and says what he needs to in order to shut others out so they won’t realize what he really is. But Hannibal sees it, and so does Freddie Lounds.
@@AmalaFrequents I agree...also on the spectrum and I have always been very empathic, compassionate. I feel like the cognitive empathy thing can totally grow and we often work on it. We are not stupid. We can often focus so well and improve in an area that we can eventually become skilled in areas that we might not have innately gotten in the same way as a neurotypical and in some unusual ways...we can often exceed neurotypicals in areas that they would consider hard for us.
For example...I am also quite flexible. When my mental health is good I am more willing to change shifts and adapt to changes than many, many neurotypicals and I believe it's partially because I do not like to be told that I cannot do something.
The biggest thing that I struggle to improve is executive functioning and interoception because I feel that is so nervous system based. When it comes to developing EQ, being responsible and changing my mindset...I can often seem to totally defy autistic stereotypes and that's partially because when I focus on anything intensely I can generally get quite good at the subject.
So I completely agree with you. Autistics can become very, very skilled in learning how to empathize and most of us are naturally compassionate which is the actual important part. A lot of neurotypicals believe that empathy = compassion. It doesn't. Dark empaths totally understand human emotions and can put themselves in another's shoes but they lack compassion, and that's what makes some very emotionally skilled people, such as Hannibal, dangerous.
So I wish the distinction between compassion and empathy was also more often discussed. Most autistics are very justice oriented and compassionate. And you are so right...we can grow quite a bit in any area when we put our mind to it! I see it as the difference between innate or instinctual ability and intellectualizing to achieve the same end goal, however. I still struggle with getting sarcasm especially with new people. Once I 'study' a friend and learn to read between the lines I can suddenly make much better determinations about when they are likely sarcastic.
The stereotypes are so, so problematic because they really limit how people see the autistic neurotype. Given our attention to detail and our passion when interested in a subject - and many us seem to be fascinated by psychology - we can often overtake the neurotypical norm simply by drive alone!

tbh i don't think the show really very well accurately portrayed most of the mental health issues involved in it, i have an autistic brother and his dad has asperger's/mild autism and my understanding of it from knowing them and other family members and also having adhd like.. didn't really line up with will's character at all. i thought he looked a lot more like cptsd/ptsd as opposed to having the problems he had due to neurological or developmental problems. i don't think he actually lacked emotional skills rather than he hindered them to avoid actually having to connect
I truly suggest watching the whole show. It has some interesting lines and weird character development that can take a lot of analysis. I would love to see more of your comments in the show as a whole. Now, I can definitely suggest from season 1 episode 8 and 13. From season 2 episode 3, 8 and 9. Now, season 3 has so many interesting episodes and twists I am sure you will enjoy. Especially the last ones. So yes, watch the whole show and react/analyze your favorite parts.
I think you'd love Hannibal. Its a relatively quick watch at 3 seasons from beginning to end so not too egregious a time investment.
This is one of my favourite shows, and probably the most beautiful thing I've seen on TV, despite its macabre subject matter.

So I would hope that they would realize something is up before they go into DKA. Then they could go get their revenge on Eldon before he gets them in his trunk. 🔪🔪⚰️
The show makes the viewer question whether Lecter is actually helping Will or not. Lecter sees the gift that Will has, the ability to embody the killers he chases, as maybe something he can manipulate. Lecter always has his own agenda that does not always fall in line with the people who rely on him. It's one part that makes this show so great. Specially with the acting by Mikkelsen, where you can't really read him and his true intentions.
I've been waiting for someone to make a video like that for SOOO long! Hannibal is my favorite show since, like, middle school. Hannibal and Will's relationship are very complex, they cannot be defined by one word. They're manipulative, twisted, loving. It's really interesting to watch how these relationship progress, please make a series of these videos since there is more therapy later in show.
9:10 so, about that... hannibal knows it's something more serious than stress. but that is the point: he doesn't want will to know that. he wants will to get worse and worse so he can manipulate him to his own image. he sees himself as a god, he thinks he should decide who lives and who dies. but when he finds someone interesting (as will) he molds them to be like him, a killer. he wants will to feel out of his mind then makes he thinks he is a murderer by gaslighting him, it's crazy

Back in the day someone on tumblr studying the APA ethics guidelines did it during a Hannibal rewatch and highlighted everything Hannibal violated. Their study copy was very colorful by the end XD

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for addressing the misconception about empathy and autism. My mum was completely disregarded in her queries as to whether I might be autistic for the sole reason that I demonstrated empathy.
I hope someone showed you the episode and part where Hannibal goes to HIS therapist.
It's kinda interesting how Hannibal knows how to play the game of human and he could have been really good therapist.
But I never watched the show until the end, sound-design gives me too much anxiety and is so loud.
Also they should have made Hannibal bit less creepy feeling from the start, so it would be more realistic that they didn't suspect him at all.

I read and enjoyed this comment a full year later - thanks for sharing, extreme choices in sound design aren't talked about enough, they can make or ruin a piece of AV art, sometimes just because it's messy (e.g. I always have to have subtitles on if a film dials its music too loud and muddies its own dialogue) or sometimes because sound effects can cause actual misophonia - I'm glad that sensory triggers are getting included more often where shows have lists of trigger warnings available
Its a really amazing show! Its actually a piece of art. The cinematography, the acting, the writing, everything about the show is incredible. Ive watched it so many times over and there is always so much more to analyze. Mostly, the interest of the show is the relationship of Hannibal and Will. Their dynamic is amazing and their chemistry is next level. It can be analyzed so heavily, but what is truly interesting is how Hannibal and Will bring out certain characteristics in each other. Hannibal brings out Will's darker urges and Will erodes Hannibal's carefully crafted control and apathy.
I highly recommend watching the entire show! It is really interesting how Mads plays Hannibal as Hannibal is shown to experience at least some level of care and love (which requires empathy). His actions towards Will are often emotionally motivated and even when he does things that seem apathetic, the emotion the Mads himself portrays makes it seem as though that apathy is a shield which Hannibal uses to hide his emotions.
I would actually be really interested to hear from a psychiatrist who has seen the whole show whether or not Hannibal is a "psychopath"/has anti social personality disorder. I would argue myself that Hannibal (at least this show's version), though lacking empathy to a significant degree, does experience emotions that are only possible through empathy. I would say that Bedelia is more likely to suffer from that disorder than him.
I could write an entire thesis on this show so I will stop now. I highly recommend this show to everyone who can cope with the gore because it is a literal masterpiece.

5:30 I am SO glad you mentioned that! I absolutely love Hannibal, but there are so many subtle issues that keep stacking up. One of which is being abelist.
Later on in the show, they are interrogating someone and Alana goes to hold his hands. He immediately recoils and stays away from her. Hannibal instantly jumps to telling Jack that this is "psychopathic" behaviour when it's just some guy not wanting to be touched by a stranger.
As an Autistic person, your pointing out the difference between cognitive and affective empathy instantly earned a subscription from me.
I would love to watch you watch this whole series because it's so cleverly done. The character details and psychologies are fascinating, and the relationships. If you are interested please watch the whole thing. There are layered references that mean jumping to particular episodes can make you miss a lot of depth- for example if you make it to s2 it gets truly fascinating as a long character study arc. I found the show is very good as it goes on at making you sympathetic with mindsets you're objectively horrified about (just like Will), and then pulling you out for a second to be horrified. It's clever psychological horror, and I'm sure there will be many moments of the psychiatry you will be horrified by but it will be so fun to watch.
I know this is an older video but the fungus analogies hold water. Fungi have intricate networks, very similar to the brain, and they can sense the presence of people nearby (in a very limited capacity).
The show gets to a point ( rather quickly btw) where the “monster of the week” dynamic, that is so common in the procedural-type of crime tv, turns into something you need to endure to get to the main attraction, which of course is the relationship between Hannibal and Will, and the house of mirrors he (Hannibal) creates around Will in order to shape his decisions, detective-wise, for the ultimate purpose of staying free, and continue to sáciate his hunger, both physically and intellectually.
Definitely recommend it, even if you never react to an episode on camera again.

Although if I had to request only a single episode to watch it would be episode 4 of season 1 titled Oeuf as it had many therapy session moments and is not too far in to the series that you lost context 😉

Interesting to hear you dissect this show. When they talked about Will’s empathy “disorder”, they weren’t talking about a lack thereof. They were speaking on his wild ability to empathize with people which is why he is always being brought in to investigations. He emphasizes with the killer and that helps them solve the murders. This is also why they keep talking about him getting too close to it all. Jack and Alana are afraid it’s going to break him. It was also interesting that you mentioned that many psychologists and psychiatrists have their own therapists. Hannibal actual does have a therapist named Bedelia and she shows up many times in the series. It’s a really interesting and captivating show overall. Would recommend watching it in full.
hannibal was actually a good psychiatrist to will... for maybe two encounters. then he was all about inducing an organic psychosis

- I think it also says a lot about Jack Crawford that he accepts a “rubber stamp” so easily. While he treats Will like he’s fragile, it’s mainly because Jack needs Will functioning to catch killers and for that Will needs some measure of sanity. Jack often edges ethical boundaries if it means getting results, which is what makes him a fascinating character.
- As an autistic, I’m really glad that you broke down the two kinds of empathy and can confirm that’s what it’s like for me. Will, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to lack cognitive empathy either, seeing as he can deduce specific things about people based on how a crime scene is laid out. If anything, he has a disorder due to an over abundance of both kinds of empathy, not a lack of either.
- You pointing out Hannibal opening up about his feelings and saying it’s an actual technique adds something to this scene. First, Will mentioned knowing all the “tricks” a psychiatrist might use, so Hannibal being genuine (or at least appearing as such) might be a way to reach Will without rousing suspicion. Second, considering that Hannibal is trying to push Will into becoming a killer himself, he might be trying to encourage his feelings of guilt and responsibility to potentially manipulate him in the future.
- It’s actually not surprising that Hannibal is a good psychiatrist (minus the times he crosses ethical and moral boundaries for his own curiosity). Something established in the show is that he’s something of a perfectionist; everything he does from cooking to drawing to how he dresses he strives to be impeccable. Later in the series he talks about how he was a surgeon before someone died on his table and that was too much for him. He frames it as guilt for someone dying, but it was more because that death was a grim reminder that, no matter his skill, there is always room for failure. And that was too much for him to handle, so he swapped to psychiatry instead.
Overall, it was great hearing your thoughts on the character.
Hannibal is one of my favorite shows because they actually take a lot of the medical side seriously. Yes some of it is a stretch for good TV but a majority of the show is a psychological horror for a reason. There is more mental manipulation than murder in my opinion.
I normally don’t comment much, but I am now because I, and I’m willing to bet SO MANY others, would watch you react to this show in its entirety. Because not only is it just a fantastic and beautiful show, but your perspective on the psychological aspect of it would be AMAZING to hear and see. Please consider at least reacting to some more specific episodes, and if you enjoy it a lot maybe the whole show!
Oh I loooove Hannibal. And I loved this video. There are some scenes I’ve always been interested in someone breaking down. Hypnosis, physical disassociations, spacial issues, patient relationships, etc. I feel like you’d enjoy the show. Even if you started from the beginning and fast forwarded to moments with Hannibal and patients. I would love to see more of this broken down.
Great video, I'd love to see you do more 'Hannibal'. You're absolutely right that Hannibal minimises Will's PTSD as mere "stress". If you watch the whole show you'll find out this is part of his plan. He's an excellent psychiatrist when he wants to be, but he is unethical and delights in manipulating patients.
The violence in this show is so ridiculously over the top it actually makes it easier to watch, the scene that disturbed me the most (besides every one with Mason in it) was in "Roti" (s1ep11) where Hannibal pushes Will into a seizure for his own amusement.
me and my friends found the horse episode hilarious just because of how goddamn ridiculous it is, like a lot of the show lmao

ive been waiting for a video like this ever since I've finished this show a few months ago, seeing professionals react on series like this is so interesting
I really like that not only is Hannibal doing a great job at playing an intelligent, competent, experienced psychiatrist - but his use of leading language and incepting positions is what makes his insidious nature so fascinating on screen for this show. He is incepting into the mind of his vulnerable patients ideas and ways to look at situations, while having entirely plausible deniability.
He posits God feels powerful and feels good when he kills - self projecting but also offering the olive branch for an emotionally vulnerable patient to metabolise their trauma and make it meaningful in a destructive way. It is interesting to him to sow seeds of dysfunction and escalation in patients. He has the endless air of ‘I am waxing poetic in a way to provoke you to respond, so I can work with your responses in a psychiatric manner’ while also planting validations for dysfunctional thought patterns. Brilliant.
I absolutely loved watching this. Having a "professionals" honest take on this show is necessary. I watched this week to week as it was aired on NBC and was shocked what they got away with. How this slipped through the cracks is beyond me.
4:50 im not completely sure anymore but wasnt wills disorder like in the other direction, so he feels too much empathy which is why he knows how murderers think?
Will said it himself that his 'disorder' is "closer to autism and aspergers' in the very first episode when Jack confronted him about it noticing how he avoids direct eye contact
And, you can have more than one (disorder i mean) plus being empathetic isnt a disorder, despite what will thinks

hannibal is just a master at taking people's issues and turning them into murderers. in this case, yeah empathy did really break will because hannibal made it so (pushing him on all directions for it, kept crawford going when he shouldnt have).
chris chan is a great real-life example of how someone is treated when they already have neurological issues can push them to extremes (obviously not to the same fantastical sense as the show)
PLEASE do more videos on Hannibal. You'd quickly realize it's filled with such interesting themes, never seen on TV before! I feel like you would get a lot out of it. It's so many things; psychological horror, seductive melodrama, explores different toxic relationships, manipulation, and it's also very poetic, artistic and romantic... in a forbidden romance typa way.
I'm glad this ended up on Netflix where more people can find it. This is such a great show that deserves more

One of my favorite TV shows of all time even though it’s completely fictional. I took it to be more of an interpretation of two people trying to find connection in the world that refuses to except all of them. I loved your analysis of the show. Most of the show centers around the relationship between Will and Hannibal. I hope you review more episodes later. ❤️

This has got to be one of my favorite shows. Foreshadowing, writing and acting are superb. While it does break away from the books here and there, and I have issues with one break, but it nails the characters and feeling of the story amazingly.
i loved your understanding and explanation of how ketones function on both tiers, low levels to feed brain and heart, high levels that actually cause a problem. Too many docs treat all ketones as bad.
You need to watch more of this show, it's got so much to analyze and dissect it's wild

From a psychiatrist POV I would say that 6 is the most heavy in terms of both exploring Will, but also the killer of the week, who will be quite memorable in the whole show

I recognize the "it won't work on me" attitude.
I'm speaking of psychologists in particular when it comes to therapy (though I suppose the same can apply to MDs of various stripes; try having an MD as a patient and see...).
It really is harder to reach a point of useful interaction when the techniques are familiar. It requires a therapist who is flexible enough, confident enough, and experienced enough to deal with the patient at eye level, on their terms, without discarding boundaries completely, and a patient willing to invest in it. It can ultimately be rewarding but it takes a lot of adjustments to find that equilibrium.
For instance, if I tell you that X happened, it bothered me because of Y, which is related to Z, are you going to accept that I've done some of the work due to experience, and that it would be a possibly frustrating waste of time to not just go directly to Z, or are you going to delve into why I chose to skip those steps? Am I hiding/deflecting something, or have I reached Z "properly" and it would be beneficial to focus on that? How much do you say/ask about it, and to what extent do you trust my judgment? To what extent are you willing to question my judgment, or ask me to question it, if it's possibly risking harming the relationship? I could go on, but basically, it can be a tightrope and not every dyad can walk it.
And now I'm going to rewatch the entire show, so thanks for that

I'd love to see you react to the whole show! I'm coincidentally binging the series for the second time, and the dynamic between will and hannibal is fascinating and wills ability is fascinating. Hes a pure empath and puts himself in the serial killers shoes so well he becomes them. 10/10 show

Hannibal is absolutely terrific series, especially from psychological perspective. And it goes to some wild places. I'd agree with others that watch all the episodes, but if you can't then from season 1 ep8 "Fromage" and ep12 "Relevés" give you probably the most to work with as stand alone episodes.
Absolutely love this show, within the top 3 of my all-time favorites. Love Hannibal & Will's characters, dialogue and their relationship.

You should watch the whole show. Not only is it genius and fascinating psychologically but it's a queer villain love story between Will and Hannibal. It is arguably the best show ever and I can not get enough of it. ❤️
Additionally the creator, Bryan Fuller, initially went to school to become a psychiatrist and his professor told him to go into film school. So he knows a bit. Hannibal and Will are like the exact opposites of each other. Will is so empathetic he can relate and understand the minds of killers. Hannibal is not entirely lacking empathy but he is in control and chooses when he uses and feels empathy. He absolutely adores Will's mind and recognizes the possibility of Will being able to see and understand his mind from the moment he sees him. It's like a love at first sight. I could talk about this for years though. Watch the whole show. 🙏🔥
