Well TV shows are entertainment first, so a lot of shows aim for drama or comedy and put that at a higher priority than medical accuracy. Doctors (and other people with medical knowledge) aren't the majority of the audience, so it's hard for shows to impress people by their educational value over their entertainment value. And sometimes it just takes a while for a show to develop an audience. Still, I appreciate the effort to make it as reasonably accurate as possible.
I loved that show... sadly the second season didn't really caught the audience here in germany.. it is such a great show and it got me so many times.... for notice i didn't enjoy greys anatomy or others except for scrubs... and code black just hooked me from the first moment... mama is the best :D
You know instead of enjoying the scene of the baby's birth just you know "how about suturing the patient back up so she doesn't bleed to death..." that cracked me up how serious he got.
Well she does have to wait for the placenta to come out before suturing. I have observed a lot of C sections, assisted in almost 30 and performed 3 as the primary surgeon ( under supervision ) and it takes 5 minutes posts delivery of child to deliver the placenta.
What got me about Code Black was how much emphasis it put on platonic relationships between the staff. Like they love each other so much and are like family to each other, but there's no relationship drama. Also how well the patients' stories were integrated into each episode. They held weight and felt important. When medical dramas focus too much on the interpersonal (sexual) relationships between its doctors and hospital staff, I lose interest quickly because it feels like a cop out. Your show is set in a hospital, a place of life and death and despair and hope. There's your drama. That's all you need!
I remember that they started some romantic stuff, like Angus having a crush and Savetti banging a surgical resident, but it was dropped pretty quickly, especially in the later seasons (Dr Ethan does have one later, but it was done quite well IMO). It was genuinely quite refreshing to have a no-nonsense medical show, since most of them are romantic dramas first, medical show second.
Totally agree. Too many shows these days get lost in the surface level relationship drama, that they miss out on the more contextual drama (I.E, medical emergencies, patient issues, etc) I completely avoided missed out on this show because I had assumed it would be just like those. I had no idea it was so medically accurate, and actually focused on the doctors as a family for a change. That is really cool. Too bad it was cancelled, but I'm definitely interested in watching what's there.
Wasn't there a ghost or angel at some point? Edit: Don't get me wrong, I liked the show, too. And I'm just reading now that there was a thing about how some of the staff of the hospital they based it on believing there were ghosts in the old building that weren't in a new building they moved to, and that they needed the ghosts. So maybe that's accurate, too. I'm not saying people can't and don't believe in ghosts/angels, I just thought it was weird that the show seemed to be depicting them actually being there.
I remember watching this and it felt like it went off the rails after the first season. At least that was my thought at the time. I remember thinking it got increasingly fantastical and unbelievable. They had a child on a flying plane build a makeshift defibrillator because the mother was unresponsive for christs sake. There is only so much I can suspend my disbelief. Something changed over the course of the show and whatever it was, it lost its charme with it imho.
Gina Darling I was so confused when he mentioned he told people to stop doing cpr on his mother without any background explanation like, what happened?
I started to cry when he said this. His voice was being professional, his eyes said different. I have so much respect for this man. This is what a doctor SHOULD be.
8:45 When my grandmother died, my father was hysterical, so the doctor called the police on him. A police officer then proceeded to mock him for being distraught over his mothers death. ("What are you, a momma's boy?" according to my father) I believe it took 3 police officers to restrain him after that. (he was 20 and fit)
i dont get people who mock other for that, if there anyone in this world you should have that amount of love for is your parents, i still have a mother gladly and i cant even imagine what i would do, i just know that i wouldnt be myself for a while
Hi Dr. Mike so I actually got the pleasure of meeting the writers/producers of this show and you were absolutely correct! These writers/producers WERE doctors in this specific hospital, and because their ER was so small and in such a high traffic part of LA, they had to call code black more often than normal. That explains why this show is so incredibly medically accurate and also why there seems to be little to no "fraternization" between the residents 😂.
Little to no fraternization? In a fictionalized confined intense environment designed as entertainment for the masses? Clearly you didn’t watch the show. The head of residents got involved with a first-year and two first-years hooked up...before she hooked up with the head surgeon....and that was just during the first season
9:35 “I’ve had to ask residents to stop doing CPR on my mom” .....Jesus, that sounds like one of the darkest scenes I can imagine. Imagine you’re the one before everyone else in the room knowing that there’s nothing else you can do, and you have to actively STOP them.... Dude that’s haunting just thinking about
Being not too popular means less money from advertising and it’s always about the money. Who cares about quality anymore? I really enjoyed this show and the cancellation means I don’t watch network tv anymore.
And for me, better stayed that way. Code Black is something most real doctors can learn from. Long running seasons tend to become less and less medically accurate in my opinion.
@Mortisha the shows do cost money to make. So if a show is just breaking even or not even breaking even, the business side is what determines its future. Things like what's costing the most money are looked at, are these things crucial to the quality of the show, can any of those things be cut, if not, what other things are potential reasons for the show not pulling in the ratings it needs to maintain quality while also justifying continuation, etc. Just because a show is exceptionally good doesn't always mean it will have success. There's a number of factors, especially when it comes to network television. Day and time slots are huge. Sometimes a great show will come along that can POSSIBLY do better on a different day in a specific time slot, but all the prime time slots on the network on all days feature shows that pull ratings that far outshine the ratings of the struggling show, therefore it becomes impossible to try and see if that show will do better. Sometimes they'll put the struggling show on hold and air it in the prime time slots when the big ratings shows are off season, which can be hard due to the long seasons some shows tend to have, which lead to smaller off seasons for those shows. It's a combination of things, not just money, although money is in every single one of those reasons. To think that networks aren't thinking of the quality of the show or aren't proud of having a high caliber show on their network is just incredibly pessimistic. Networks tend to have to be a bit more cutthroat due to their limited window of figuring out the best course of action to save the show and land it in an area where it will find its audience and as we know, sometimes that just doesn't happen. That's why you see many safe choices on network television with sitcoms and reality TV shows because those are cheaper to produce while yielding results that allow those shows to continue and draw in advertisers. I'm not saying that networks don't completely fumble a show's life, but there's definitely more going on behind the scenes, all of which lead to money or are influenced by it. But that's the influence behind ALL types of media. It's a business. And nobody continues a business that doesn't make money in the long run.
Intense introvert here: If only people weren’t getting sick and dying, I’d be happy as a clam, closed up in my shell with no one pushing me for contact!
The little girl listening to her father's heartbeat in the recipient's body reminded me of my mom. Due to MBC, my mom was unable to donate her organs, but she was able to donate her body through the Genesis Legacy Whole Body Donation Foundation, because she wanted to keep helping others, even after she was gone. A few months after her passing, they sent her ashes back to us, along with a lovely letter listing all of the things various people were able to learn. It was bittersweet, because I was (and still) missing her so much, but I knew she'd be happy to know all that, because she was always helping people.
I just wanna say thank you Dr.Mike you've taught me everything I know today and I'm only 11 and I'm hoping to become a paramedic in the future I'm known as the mini medic or small doc at our house since I'm learning so much in such a small amount of time.
Stay Hydrated and Mind Your Business Your blood does not suck, it saves lives. Yes, O- is an universal donor, but for each person their own blood type is the best, as well, O- would run out fast, if no other blood group donated. I’m AB+, my blood can be given to only others with AB+, I can receive all blood. However, by donating my blood, I contribute to AB+ getting AB+, and thus not using other type of blood. Blood rules, donate! :)
@@fooxy13 Donating as an AB blood type is great because even thought O Neg is the universal donor for RBC, AB is the universal donor for plasma since you don't have any of the antibodies that would attack A,B, or AB blood.
I still have physical contact with people every day. It's my job lol.. But I also hugged two co-workers today too. Granted we were wearing lab coats, face shields and masks..
Woah, you personally had to ask residents to stop doing CPR on your own mom? That's so heart wrenching I almost teared up just hearing that sentence. Sorry you had to go through that.
Naielle Nunley No it’s not. Having a cold is a common thing that happens and affect the whole body. It’s normal for people say “I have a cold”, no one gives a fucking shit if you are ovulating are not, and it’s more uncomfortable to talk about. If it’s normal, go walk up to someone on the street and say “I am on my period” and then do it again saying “I have a cold”, see the results.
I absolutely love when a doctor is honest with me. I really appreciate EVERYTHING explained to me to calm my anxiety. That's why I ran away from a mental health clinic. No one would tell me what was going on so I panicked and ran out door and never came back.
This might actually surprise you, but medical people especially doctors don't usually insist in keeping their families alive when it's due. A CPR more than 30 mins is a sign. Some really old age we don't even allow them to even initiate. Sometimes the best end is a peaceful end. And we have seen a lot.
Leidy Barrios not always if your unable to make medical decisions your medical proxy ( normally a spouse or child unless other paperwork has been filed) is allowed to make the decision to discontinue medical treatment. So if you just show up at the ER no paperwork on file they will do their best to keep you alive until they either find the paperwork or ask you family what they want done.
Oh my gosh. I started crying when you mentioned about having to tell your residents to stop cpr your mom. I can't imagine how hard that is. I really appreciated the perspective about having to tell family members bad news and everything. Thank you for sharing ❤
He seems so pleased with this. I’m so happy for him to be able to watch something that’s refreshing accurate enough to make him smile this much and be able to say “this is accurate” so many times.
The fact the act of “baby abduction” happens enough to elicit a specific name is slightly unsettling. I wonder how many baby’s have accidentally/purposely been switched at birth
It actually doesn't happen that often . It has a code so that if it does happen they can lock down the hospital without spooking the abductor. It would (at least in most hospitals in the UK) be very difficult to abduct a baby
Hospitals usually have ID bands on 2 of the baby's limbs immediately after birth, befor they can leave the delivery room, so they can match it to the bands on the parents to make sure everyone has the right baby. Some hospitals even have electronic trackers now that will automatically lick down a unit if the tracker is sensed in a place it shouldn't be or stops sending a signal where it should be. Even with these security measures, though, they need to have a code they can call so nobody in the hospital panics and so they can discreetly look for the baby without anyone knowing there's an emergency, including the person who took the baby. It's a rare occurrence but there has to be a plan in place in case it does happen. It's like how you would still wear your seat belt and have car insurance even if you've never been in an accident.
JustGame I recently gave birth and before I did, the nurse went through all the precautions they have to avoid it. Such as the color of the name tags of the people working in the birthing unit (so another employee can’t pretend they work there and take the baby). They have the ankle bands to match with the parents. They also have a tracking device on the umbilical clamp that sounds an alarm if it goes near the exit doors or elevators. At least now they make it very difficult.
I would like him to make a video about this!! That's literally my bf's biggest fear so I told him if we ever have a child, we will get a midwife so he doesn't have to worry. I wonder if Doctor Mike ever experienced this.
You talking about your mom made me tear up, I’m so sorry. I was with my grandma when she got taken off life support. That was almost 8 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.
Those types of memories really do stick with you throughout your life. The best thing we can do is to use those moments to become stronger, more empathetic humans.
Awee you're seriously my new fave. Love that you have such compassion yet professionalism in the medical field. The part about never being offended because you understand where the anger stems from was very empathetic. (PS please do another Grey's reaction I freakin love that show)
Lol comments like this are stupid , you know nothing g how he conducts him self at work by how he act in these vids , you need more logic 101and critical thinking skills
People will always find a way to make a nice comment a negative one, almost always because they are unhappy with themselves. It's okay with me. I just feel bad for them :/
0:43 Bomb threats are Code Orange in mine. Code Gray is combative person, and Code Silver is an active shooter. We don't have a Code Black, which makes sense, as we're in a very rural area.
Absolutely LOVE Dr. Mike. How about this part... "I had an 84 year old patient.... She asked for a hug- OF COURSE I'M GONNA HUG HER!!" I have a feeling that Dr. Mike is super popular in his practice. Such a sweetheart!
I just want to say a huge and heartfelt thank you to those families who say yes to organ donation. My mother received a kidney transplant 26 years ago and she was lucky enough to have her own mum be a match. That transplant transformed my mum's life and I was born 2 years later because someone selflessly offered to donate a kidney to their own daughter. Whilst my mum was waiting for tests after first discovering she needed a transplant, she was on a ward with other people who were waiting for a new organ. She met many people who were in a desperate need for a fast transplant and new chance at life. Many died and many lived. Please do your part and, as long as it does not go against your religion, please become an organ donor and discuss it with your family
@@juliaspoonie3627 Thank you for your lovely comment. Since I posted this, the UK has now changed to an opt out system like in Austria. Hopefully more lives can be saved now
Finland has had the same opt-out system since 2010, working well. I don't see a reason why any country would not do it that way, as long as organ transplants are not against the majority's culture or religion.
I just turned 16 recently and I've known for a while that I'm going to donate my organs just because of it possibly helping other people live an improved life.
The country I live in recently put in place an 'opt out' system, so unless you actively choose not to be an organ donor, for whatever reasons, then your organs are used for donation. Everything, including, eyes, skin etc. and I think its a really good idea. It means that many people who don't really care either way or don't bother with organ donation are still donors, so there isn't a shortage of donors, but everyone still has a choice and it is easy to opt out.
Fun fact: in Quebec, there's a whole transplant program that supports families that go through the same process as the child in this show, but it is strictly forbidden to reveal the identity of the organ recipient. We've actually had some cases where it could lead to harassment (i.e. the family tries to intrude into the recipient's life as a coping mechanism, or if the family is unsatisfied with who received the organs because it doesn't correspond to their 'ideal')
I love how you talked about the importance of physical affection. Human connection is undeniably what makes life worth the pain in intense situations like these.
I agree with people thinking doctors are allowed to hug patients, recently I was having a very horrible incident and my primary care said to me " I know I might not be allowed but I feel you need a hug, is it ok if I give you a hug" She was right it was what I needed, I was going through a hard time with my MS relapsing and other things and just had a bad panic attack. The best thing she could have done and did do was hug me and let me know I was not alone in what I was going through.
Layna Sunshine uh I don't get your comment, you're agree doctors don't hug patients, but you're thankfull your doctor did? It's just a little confusing
Layna Sunshine I’ve gotten hugs from doctors when I being put on amd taken off life support /intubated , every single time bc I’m always in life support and it’s always scary. Technically only one doctor hugged me. The nurses all did ...I absolutely needed those hugs...it helps so so much sometimes
This made me so emotional. I'm so so so grateful and appreciative of the fact that there are real, genuinely good ppl out there like Dr. Mike doing their best to make the world a better place. ❤️
Tøp Billion hi! it is true, the antidote to carbon monoxide poisoning is literally breathing 100% oxygen. You know how oxygen reaches your organs? It actually attaches to a part of your blood called the hemoglobin. However, oxygen wont be able to attach to your hemoglobin since carbon monoxide steals away the hemoglobin (like a love triangle where the other woman steals the hubby). Therefore there will be little to no oxygen that will reach your tissue organs. Sooo, in order to reverse that. You need a hella lot of oxygen! I’m actually a 3rd year medical student I also found it weird, confusing, and funny before! Life is so silly 🤣
When my husband died every doctor that was involved in his care and also my psychiatrist and therapist were very free with hugs. It was very helpful as we were far away from our home state and family. I was so alone.
Watching your videos never fails to motivate me to become a better person. You're amazing. I've also lowkey binged some medical shows based on your videos hahaha
Code Black was one of the few hospital shows I actually liked. My sister is a nurse anesthetist who worked in a medical center in LA, pretty close to gangsta paradise. The ORs had deadbolt locks so a rival gang member couldn't barrel in there and finish the job.
Love these videos, Dr. Mike - especially because you use your platform to correct misconceptions. And lol at them diagnosing a pneumo based on country of origin - we’ll have to check out the data on that one 😉
David Hindin, M.D. Yes! Thank you!!! That is sooo stupid and actually racially profiling or shall I say racially diagnosing, especially *without a physical exam!* There should be a disclaimer on these shows because even though it's Hollywood, some people still think that it's accurate.
I'm so sad that the show is cancelled 😰 Season 3 is the last season Really loved this series and hope it can be picked up by another network or Netflix
I can understand it though, I watched about 4 or 5 episodes because of Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman, but eventually lost interest and stopped watching. I actually thought they cancelled it years ago. It just didn’t click with me. Might have been too real or not dramatic enough, hard to say.
When my husband passed away the doctor who pronounced him (it was around 4am) hugged my mother in law and me and he was very emotional too. Some of the nurses even came to the funeral to pay their respects, he had been under their care for two months, and we became very close. My husband was very friendly and was great with making people feel special and cared for, so he was very popular in the ward. There's nothing inappropriate about this, they were incredible caretakers during his time in the hospital, and were super profesional all the time, and in that moment they also grieved with us. We are all humans, and they comforted us and we comforted them, coz we all needed it. Best team of nurses and doctors I could've ever asked for, my family will always be incredibly thankful for their love and care.
So glad to hear someone put it out there that humans NEED physical contact. Brother in law's father died. While in a discussion, his mother looked at me and said that is what she missed most right now was her husbands arms around her. She asked for a hug and I hugged her. She hugged me so tight it made me realize how much I needed it as well. Patients need this too. I have held hands until the patient feels better and they always thank me with such sincerity, it makes ME feel grateful.
Totally agree about the hugging thing! I'm a nurse, can't say I've ever hugged a doctor, but I have hugged fellow nurses when shit hits the fan with their patients and they get overwhelmed, and I have definitely hugged my patients before or even more common held their hand, nearly every shift it feels like. Sometimes just discharging a patient or sometimes if their really upset or struggling with something. I work on surgical but also worked tons at a retirement home and bonded with one resident really well and she'd tell me she loved me every time I dropped off her HS meds put her medicated cream on and tucked her in to bed ahah and I'd say it back, she became like a grandmother figure to me. Sadly she passed but I still think about her all the time. And Heck I've had more old men and women kiss my hand than I have by anyone even remotely close to me age. Fellow female nurses will totally know what I mean! Hahah
I dont hug, I just fix people. I leave emotional stuff to less talented docs and nurses. Fixed someone, next one please. Mike would say I am one of those who knows it all...nope...just know what is actually out there. For example guy comes with Vitiligo. It is supposed to be shit you cant cure. For majority you can actually fix it so it stays totally under control and as long you do what I tell you, you are OK. Usual books are for example terrible in that issue. It is embarrassing.
My mom worked as a paramedic for the fire department in south central LA & other areas in southern CA. She then became an ER nurse: she worked throughout southern CA but mostly in the downtown LA areas & she’s seen alot of gang violence & some of the most insane heartbreaking things. She had been sh*t at almost unalived many times working as a paramedic especially in the areas she worked in. Shes had partners that she worked with who were taken hostage c unalived & several of her fellow Paramedics & firefighters took their own lives over the PTSD they had from what they’ve seen in the field. She ended up retiring to have kids she worked with other men in the fire department who had kids & she watched how their injuries or passing would devastate their families so she made the choice to quit because she always told us she never wanted to risk not being able to raise (us) her kids. The stories she has are some of the most heartbreaking & some of the most insane miracles of people surviving despite the odds. But she worked in that field decades & decades ago. And the violence has only gotten worse & worse as time goes on .
" i have had to ask residents to stop performing cpr on my mom..." me:..."starts crying" if that aint real sh** i don't know what is. Especially coming from a medical professional and having to go through that. The amount of professionalism when dealing with patients in a time of need and showing that empathy is just astounding. So much respect. Def...enjoy watching these videos. I could never have the heart to go through being a doctor .
13luberri this. I had to stop going through school just before i finished training for mental health work counselling. I realized that I’m not able to separate my emotions from my clients, and i would take a lot of the things i saw home with me at the end of the day. And I hadn’t even finished school yet LOL. I have such an appreciate for people who work with other people, the burnout is real and i am so grateful for the people who devote their lives to helping keep the rest of us whole.
@@jesslynch94 I'm a nurse. As a nurse, I've been during the most intimate moments with my patients. I have heard the saddest things someone could hear. Many times I've come in tears. I still can't get over certain things I've seen or heard. It's just part of the job. It is heart wrenching, but to feel so deeply is also a beautiful thing.
How long did it take you to get used to the sight of blood, or were you fine with it from the start? Have any of the procedures you've done made you nauseous or even come back to haunt you in your dreams?
I’m watching this in March 2021 & coronavirus has been ramped & hearing u talk about hugging coworkers & patients & their families gave me automatic response “nooooo social distancing” then u coughed ‘have u been tested Dr Mike???’ Overall loved this video & can’t wait 2 more like this. I can’t imagine having 2 tell drs/nurses 2 stop cpr on 1 of my loved 1’s. My heart goes out 2 u.
Honest question: are there really hospitals with such dim lighting? Most of those scenes looked like they were working by candle light, with only 2 or 3 candles in the room. I've never seen a hospital so dimly lit.
It’s probably a combination of how they lit the scene and the color grading in how they edited the film. They definitely have full lights from above but I think they have accent lighting from different angles to cast shadows for dramatic effect.
12:00 I went to urgent care I wasn’t able to hold any liquids down for 12 hours and I was running a fever. Doctor listened to my heart said I had a murmur and with the same breath asked if I ever used iv drugs. I said no. Then he berated me saying I was lying and I had a suspicious endocarditis and sent me to the ER because I wasn’t helping help me 😑 I’ve never done any drugs i was understandably upset. ER nurse took a urine sample within minutes of my arrival and found out I had a uti. 😑😑😑😑😑
There is a cancelled medical series called The Night Shift. It's based in San Antonio, Texas. It's a medical drama that involves the army in the episodes
Goddess FourWinds if you’re watching season 4 that came out months ago but (i think) has only been released on netflix recently x its such a good show its one of my favourites
Glad you liked it, Mike. Code Black is easily one of my favorite medical dramas (and I watch pretty much all of them), and it's nice to hear that they're reasonably accurate about the medicine. I'd love to see another reaction to a season 2 or 3 episode as well, though I can't recommend a specific one, since they're all good.
My grandfather died just before Christmas this year. My whole family agreed that we're content knowing his passing meant someone else got to live. Be a doner. You don't need it all when you're gone.
It’s 2024 and today was my first day of medical school in Brazil! Telling us not to be offended or take personally what the pacients say when they have just received bad news is an EXCELLENT advice! It’s so simple yet needed to be said out loud ❤ Love you as always Dr Mike.
LOL - love how you injected your face into the final shot. I'm a nurse (20 years) and totally agree with you on this show. Other than the title, it is the most accurate medical show I've seen.
Mike, you're one of the best things on RUclips right now! Please please, PLEASE, keep this great content up! You're AMAZING and some more CODE BLACK would be great.
"I love you so much that I wanna break you in a half." "I love you so much that I wanna punch your face." Doctor Mike: I love their relationship! 🤦🏻♀️
I love their relationship too. I have relationships like this with people at my work. You don't understand unless you work in these type of stressful situations in the medical field. I work in a very busy office, we see around 200 patients in 8 hours some times more. It can get pretty crazy. I had a patient ask me today how I could handle seeing all these sick, terrible looking people every day because it was sad. My answer was you build a tolerance to it. It becomes normal.
Hi Dr. Mike! Huge fan! I am so proud to see this. I am a trauma OR nurse and this show is based and filmed in my hospital! I wished I could have been an extra when they were filming here. It's too bad the show wasn't as popular. There were a lot of things that were out of date, but keep in mind these were based on the ER docs that worked there like 10-15 years ago. Anyways, fun watching this one video. And yes, hugs are the best! BTW, if I am not mistaken, it was written by two of our ER docs recounting all of their past experiences.
Different hospitals have different codes for different things. "Red" is usually fire, "blue" is not breathing, "pink" is usually a kidnap, and "black" is usually a bomb or some terrorist attack. Again, different hospitals have different codes.
True story: the first hospital system I worked used "code green" to signify something was wrong with the house oxygen supply. Our action was to get all the patients requiring O2 on tanks. Then, moved hospitals. Code Red was called (fire, we shelter in place, so we closed all the fire doors). Few minutes go by and they call code green. I start freaking out, I'm two weeks into my orientation, trying to remember where the tanks are, how many of my patients are on O2. Until my preceptor pointed out that at this hospital, Code Green meant "all clear," previous situation cancelled.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mom, Mike. Seems like she raised a very kind, awesome, compassionate son! Fantastic video, by the way. It's nice to know Code Black is very medically accurate. I would love to see you react to Chicago Med and Royal Pains. They're my two favorite medical shows, and it would be cool to find out just how accurate they are!
I don’t know what the back story is on your mother, but I just want to express how brave and strong you are. You’re immensely empathetic and that alone sets you apart from a lot of other doctors. Your mother would be ridiculously proud. Much love from a nurse. ❤️
This show was one of my favorites. I was very sad when it stopped. Even though I am totally NOT a doctor, I felt at the time of watching this show it was incredibly accurate. Thanks for your insight into this show, Dr Mike!
A good friend of mine is about to become a medical student, and in my efforts to keep up with everything she's talking about, I'm finding myself more and more intrigued by channels like yours. It's really interesting to see someone who knows their stuff react to shows like this. Cheers from Canada. Keep bein' awesome!
I work in a hospital in Australia, Code Black means personal attack, physical violence or threat -- security would be called to isolate, restrain or remove the violent person. I don't think we even have a code for when the hospital is overflowing or something like that. I guess closest would be Code Brown - that's an emergency situation outside the hospital that is likely to cause large number of casualties being brought to the hospital. That could be a natural disaster or a terrorist attack or something huge like bombing. So that means all resources will be mobilised to accept as many patients as possible.
In my hospital we also have a code calle "ED Gridlock" which basically means that they are not able to clear out ED space as fast as it is filling. But yes, code black is for bomb threat or terrorism.
Spontaneous pneumothoraces are divided into two types: primary, which occurs in the absence of known lung disease, and secondary, which occurs in someone with underlying lung disease.[15] The cause of primary spontaneous pneumothorax is unknown, but established risk factors include male sex, smoking, and a family history of pneumothorax.[16] Smoking either cannabis or tobacco increases the risk.
Most aren't realistic like this, super accuracy doesn't mean everyone is going to watch it. Personally I don't like cop/Doctor/etc shows because they are so stylized while trying to come off as authentic it feels stupid and hypocritical. Scrubs I liked cause while it felt believable it was also suppose to have a surrel feel to it
So glad you finally watched Code Black. I don't like other medical dramas because, like you said, they feel like a Hollywood producer wrote it while a doctor contributed. But this show is so much more intense and seems pretty accurate while incorporating some authentic drama. Please watch more! Though I have to ask. They are in their third season right now and a new resident is part of the team. His dad is like super important and rich (don't remember exactly who he is) but this resident thinks that he can bring in a pretty high tech video camera and film everything going on in the hospital, even though he's told to put it away. Hiw quickly do you think he would have been fired for that, even if his dad had some power to his name?
11:15 this makes it so much sadder in Covid times the fact you can't hug anyone. It's so eerie. Especially in a time where so much pain is happening and you cant even hug someone and tell them it will be ok.

Notice how the less popular show is the most accurate.
Well the good doctor is mostly accurate it really popular
BattleBearGamer isn’t scrubs the most accurate?
I loved that show... sadly the second season didn't really caught the audience here in germany.. it is such a great show and it got me so many times.... for notice i didn't enjoy greys anatomy or others except for scrubs... and code black just hooked me from the first moment... mama is the best :D
Wrath C-140 very true
You know instead of enjoying the scene of the baby's birth just you know "how about suturing the patient back up so she doesn't bleed to death..." that cracked me up how serious he got.
AmeleyL that cracked me up too!! 😂
😂😂

It's so frustrating to watch a medical drama and see all the staff constantly banging in the storage closet.
Yeah, if I watch a medical drama show, I want to see *medical* drama
I remember that they started some romantic stuff, like Angus having a crush and Savetti banging a surgical resident, but it was dropped pretty quickly, especially in the later seasons (Dr Ethan does have one later, but it was done quite well IMO).
It was genuinely quite refreshing to have a no-nonsense medical show, since most of them are romantic dramas first, medical show second.
Totally agree. Too many shows these days get lost in the surface level relationship drama, that they miss out on the more contextual drama (I.E, medical emergencies, patient issues, etc)
I completely avoided missed out on this show because I had assumed it would be just like those. I had no idea it was so medically accurate, and actually focused on the doctors as a family for a change. That is really cool. Too bad it was cancelled, but I'm definitely interested in watching what's there.
Network: oh? Everyone loves this medically accurate and emotionally investing show? Don’t worry, we’ll cancel it.
Exactly! I couldn't understand why the network would do that, it was a wonderful show with great characters.
Loved this show and I thought it was doing well...Amazing cast, and mostly accurate
Something changed over the course of the show and whatever it was, it lost its charme with it imho.
it doesnt matter if the people who watch it like it only how many people watch

I don’t blame your dad! I would have punched that officer out!
And Cops wonder why people don't like them...
Makes sense 3 people were required to stop him after he heard that

So there is a documentary called Code Black as well which comes from the residents in that hospital talking about the influx of patients
Cool! It’s sad they cancelled the show! I enjoyed this show realy!
@@SoftColdHearted THEY CANCELED THE SHOW?

The little girl listening to her father's heartbeat in the recipient's body reminded me of my mom. This might actually surprise you, but medical people especially doctors don't usually insist in keeping their families alive when it's due. A CPR more than 30 mins is a sign. Some really old age we don't even allow them to even initiate. Sometimes the best end is a peaceful end. And we have seen a lot.
they still have to do CPR right? unless the patient had sign the durable power of attorney or the DNR.

Mike's giddiness over how accurate this show is is adorable.

Hopefully more lives can be saved now
@@generichuman2044 Same in the Netherlands. Opt-out organ donation saves lives!

*_The treatment is breathing in oxygen_* 😂😂thanks for that Doctor Mike
He means 100 percent oxygen in a mask
Yeah hes not referring to just breathing normally. Controller pure oxygen is needed

Best team of nurses and doctors I could've ever asked for, my family will always be incredibly thankful for their love and care.
gabiluch87 you make me cry
well, i cried when i wrote this, and i felt better... crying is good
I am so sorry😢
TheGoldenLlama thank you

Hahah
Jus I'm a nurses assistant and I know exactly what you mean 😊
Jus n
I dont hug, I just fix people.
I leave emotional stuff to less talented docs and nurses.
Fixed someone, next one please.
Mike would say I am one of those who knows it all...nope...just know what is actually out there. For example guy comes with Vitiligo. It is supposed to be shit you cant cure. For majority you can actually fix it so it stays totally under control and as long you do what I tell you, you are OK. Usual books are for example terrible in that issue. It is embarrassing.
Vlade Putinovic edgy👏🏿 'less talented docs'... so edgy
In every profession you have less talented people....many of them shouldnt even be there.
This dude has the sharpest shirts! On point Sir.
You finally got an episode of a medical show without a sex scene, lol.
Laura Chamberlain I’ve watched everyone episode of Code Black....I don’t think there’s been a sex scene yet. At least not one involving the doctors.
I think there was one between Mario and Heather (tho it wasn't very explicit) and between Neal and Christa
Lmao
Laura Chamberlain YES!!!!
I believe there is a lot of shit involved with hospitals lol
Does nobody realize the outro that Doctor Mike put his face on one of the doctors from code black
Lol he did that with his house review video too. What a savage
Finnaly someone else noticed
I did
Hahaha no I didn't notice thanks for pointing it out lol
Also at the end of the video
" i have had to ask residents to stop performing cpr on my mom..."
me:..."starts crying"
if that aint real sh** i don't know what is.
13luberri that got me too
How long did it take you to get used to the sight of blood, or were you fine with it from the start? Have any of the procedures you've done made you nauseous or even come back to haunt you in your dreams?
I’m watching this in March 2021 & coronavirus has been ramped & hearing u talk about hugging coworkers & patients & their families gave me automatic response “nooooo social distancing” then u coughed ‘have u been tested Dr Mike???’
Overall loved this video & can’t wait 2 more like this.
I can’t imagine having 2 tell drs/nurses 2 stop cpr on 1 of my loved 1’s.
My heart goes out 2 u.
Hospitals are so interesting . People are having the worst, first, best and last days of their lives all in the same building.
Never thought about it that way... wow
Honest question: are there really hospitals with such dim lighting? Most of those scenes looked like they were working by candle light, with only 2 or 3 candles in the room. I've never seen a hospital so dimly lit.
I'm sure it was done for aesthetic and dramatic license reasons. Realistically it would be a lot more brightly lit.
It’s probably a combination of how they lit the scene and the color grading in how they edited the film. They definitely have full lights from above but I think they have accent lighting from different angles to cast shadows for dramatic effect.
We turn on dim lighting for night shift at my hospital so it's easier for patients to sleep
no its usually brighter
En Venezuela si los hay.
This is like the best series on youtube! Thanks Dr. Mike!
THNC yes it is!!!
14:00 "How 'bout suturing the patient back up so she doesn't bleed to death?"
I'm also wondering where all their face masks are...
12:00 I went to urgent care I wasn’t able to hold any liquids down for 12 hours and I was running a fever. Doctor listened to my heart said I had a murmur and with the same breath asked if I ever used iv drugs. I said no. Then he berated me saying I was lying and I had a suspicious endocarditis and sent me to the ER because I wasn’t helping help me 😑
I’ve never done any drugs i was understandably upset. ER nurse took a urine sample within minutes of my arrival and found out I had a uti. 😑😑😑😑😑
There is a cancelled medical series called The Night Shift. It's based in San Antonio, Texas. It's a medical drama that involves the army in the episodes
Okay, thats next!
Cancelled? I'm watching the new season right now! :)
Goddess FourWinds if you’re watching season 4 that came out months ago but (i think) has only been released on netflix recently x its such a good show its one of my favourites
Oh! Oh. oh. /sniff
I'm sooo sad now. /cries
Also Code Black got cancelled :/ season 3 is the last one 😞
I wish my science class was taught by you
But every girl would harass him LoL
Same
Go back to high school
Glad you liked it, Mike. Code Black is easily one of my favorite medical dramas (and I watch pretty much all of them), and it's nice to hear that they're reasonably accurate about the medicine. I'd love to see another reaction to a season 2 or 3 episode as well, though I can't recommend a specific one, since they're all good.
My grandfather died just before Christmas this year. My whole family agreed that we're content knowing his passing meant someone else got to live. Be a doner. You don't need it all when you're gone.
Belated condolences on your Grandfather's death
i love how you explain the science behind each scene and it's accuracy.

So small a time of window that split second of correcting word speaking is time of don't have
@@nashs.4206 Nice one
Bait Maxwell's Adventures Omg Ikr! 😂❤
Yes. Some more Code Black reviews!
"I love you so much that I wanna break you in a half."
"I love you so much that I wanna punch your face."
Doctor Mike: I love their relationship!
🤦🏻♀️
My husband and I are like this. They don't actually mean what they're saying
Lol 😂😂😂😂😂
reed900 in a nutshell
LMAOOO
@chantho730 Dr Mike is looking sexy in pink
In Grey's Anatomy they used "Code Black." When the person had a bomb in their body cavity.
Different hospitals have different codes for different things. "Red" is usually fire, "blue" is not breathing, "pink" is usually a kidnap, and "black" is usually a bomb or some terrorist attack. Again, different hospitals have different codes.
@@danielconiff8178 I had no idea. Glad you shared that information. Thanks very much!
my hospital code black - special threat/hostage (isolate area)
True story: the first hospital system I worked used "code green" to signify something was wrong with the house oxygen supply. Our action was to get all the patients requiring O2 on tanks.
Then, moved hospitals. Code Red was called (fire, we shelter in place, so we closed all the fire doors). Few minutes go by and they call code green. I start freaking out, I'm two weeks into my orientation, trying to remember where the tanks are, how many of my patients are on O2. Until my preceptor pointed out that at this hospital, Code Green meant "all clear," previous situation cancelled.
I can’t remember if black or purple was bomb threat at the hospital I worked at.

Dr Mike: “If we get to the point where you’re not allowed to hug patients, that would be horrible”. COVID-19: **Evil laughter**
I'm obsessed with this series. Don't stop making these videos!!!!!
Will keep on doing these! Please share with your friends and family so as to show RUclips this is something you're enjoying! Thank you Crystal!
when he coughed - i literally thought of the joke he later said about the spontaneous pnuemothorax!
You should produce you’re own medically series!!! Would be amazing!!!
I'm a filmmaking student and thinks the same! Let's do one!
Title: Doctor Mike or NYMD
YES WE NEED THAT
John Daniel Esguerra what does NYMD stand for? We do need that series tho!
He doesn't have time to do that, but a guest appearence would be very interesting.
This show was one of my favorites. I was very sad when it stopped. Even though I am totally NOT a doctor, I felt at the time of watching this show it was incredibly accurate. Thanks for your insight into this show, Dr Mike!
WHO WANTS DR. MIKE TO DO ANOTHER EPISODE OF REACTION TO THIS SHOW?
DROP A LIKE!!!
Ok just seems like I lil thing to just get likes on your comment but I want him to do another Episode reaction so sure ill leave a like.
@@thedeadlysin7984 Me too. This seems like a very interesting show
I mean I want more reactions to it too but the “DROP A LIKE!!!” Was unnecessary, it’s seems like yer just wanting likes 😐
Sarah Tilgner that is so thoughtful of you. I wish I had friends like you
I work in a hospital in Australia, Code Black means personal attack, physical violence or threat -- security would be called to isolate, restrain or remove the violent person.
Same at my hospital
Code grey is an active violence person at my hospital. Code black is a bomb threat
In my hospital we also have a code calle "ED Gridlock" which basically means that they are not able to clear out ED space as fast as it is filling. But yes, code black is for bomb threat or terrorism.
I'm looking at my I.D right now, Qld Australia. Blue-Medical Emergency, Yellow-Internal Emergency, Red-Fire, Brown-External Emergency, Purple-Bomb/arson, Black-Personal threat and Orange-Evacuation :)
Thats interesting. Have you ever seen a code brown? That sounds rare.
The girl putting her head on the organ receiver’s chest to listen to her Dad’s heartbeat. I’m gonna cry that is an incredibly creative drama moment
“i’m about to have a spontaneous pneumothorax” that made me laugh so hard
actually that's possible
def not under your control but possible
Spontaneous pneumothoraces are divided into two types: primary, which occurs in the absence of known lung disease, and secondary, which occurs in someone with underlying lung disease.[15] The cause of primary spontaneous pneumothorax is unknown, but established risk factors include male sex, smoking, and a family history of pneumothorax.[16] Smoking either cannabis or tobacco increases the risk.
Chris Papas i jus thought it was funny,,,
@@spookyhden10 um yep, still possibly lethal
Code Black was such a good show! Why do the good ones always get cancelled?? 😔
Probs too good and they thought most ppl can't handle
Precisely
I think Kong Allen meant “probably too good and they thought most people can’t handle it”
Most aren't realistic like this, super accuracy doesn't mean everyone is going to watch it. Personally I don't like cop/Doctor/etc shows because they are so stylized while trying to come off as authentic it feels stupid and hypocritical. Scrubs I liked cause while it felt believable it was also suppose to have a surrel feel to it
Not enough sex and relationship drama for the plebs.
