      Pretty sure a broken rib while doing CPR is a good thing most of the times cuz you’re probably doing it right. A broken rib will heal, a dead person wont

    • @alyssarh
      @alyssarh 2 года назад +90

      You were completely in the right. It's very common to break ribs when you're doing CPR correctly. A lot of people feel bad about this because you're breaking a bone and "hurting the person" but if you're doing CPR, the person is dead and you're trying to save their life. You don't do CPR on a living person and a broken rib doesn't matter in that sense - if they're dead they won't care (not to sound crude lol but I'm sure you get what I mean) and if they live then the bone will heal and you'd have saved their life

    • @alyssarh
      @alyssarh 2 года назад +62

      @jeff idk if you're doing cpr, the person is already dead. You don't do cpr on a living person. Breaking ribs is a risk you run when doing cpr and I think if a rib were to puncture a vital organ and the person couldn't be saved, it wouldn't come back as murder on you because you were trying to bring them back to life

    • @ThunderingSkies-w8h
      @ThunderingSkies-w8h 2 года назад +31

      @jeff idk I think there's also the whole "Good samaritan" thing, where you can't be held accountable for damage done if you were trying to help a person. Dunno if it applies to injuries done during CPR though

    I think the light-hearted approach is VERY situation specific. Recently my sister was hospitalized following a suicide attempt with sleeping pills and she was fine but unconscious. We had this nurse who kept walking in like "Woo! Is she still sleeping? She sure is sleepy! Wake up honey!" And it was the most tone deaf, upsetting thing. I definitely think it's different if you know the patient well, though

      Last year I was in hospital for a similar reason and my blood pressure spiked. Having a straightforward German doctor was really helpful for me to go "wait a minute, I almost had a heart attack at the age of 28 because of the pills I took" whereas if it had been someone really chill I might not have seen how serious my condition was. I've always hated doctors because my Mum died I felt like they were useless. I went private for my ADHD diagnosis as the GP was just way too light-hearted so often. The NHS in hospitals are fantastic tho.

Many years later I found out it was related to a new medication they had given her but they neglected to do a full exam after she passed away. She was telling us about CPR and chest compressions, so I asked if it’s possible to break ribs when doing this, and she said: “No! There’s no way to break the ribs. You need to do the chest compressions under the ribs so you don’t break them”. EXCUSE ME WHAT.

      I'm an interpreter, though I don't work in healthcare interpreting, and I also appreciated this aspect!
      @Pagan Deva that's unfortunate and unprofessional for an interpreter to say that. Sadly, in many countries, cost-cutting measures have put pressure on healthcare interpreters and degraded their working conditions to a point where many qualified professionals are quitting and their positions are having to be filled by those who are less (or not at all!) qualified. Sadly, short-term cost saving measures cost a lot more in the long term in terms of costs and patient safety :(

    As someone with chronic illness I can absolutely agree that medical professionals who smile, have a laugh and a joke with you, actually pays attention to you and builds a rapor and relationship with you makes an ENORMOUS difference to your time in the hospital and even sometimes to how you feel. They don't even need to be a doctor or nurse, it could be a cleaner or the lady who pushes round the tea trolley; feeling that you're not alone in a building full of strangers makes a world of difference to a patient's experience.

    I really love your expiation on drug use. I remember one of my many trips to the ER for being a 9 year drug addict. I was actually home and got so high I was on the verge of an overdose and I passed out outside and it was a heat wave in my area. My family found me and rushed me to the hospital and I could only make like growling noises as a result of the drugs and I was severely dehydrated (so much that my kidneys were shutting down causing a ton of pain) and I had severe heat stroke (running an internal temp of 104) Luckily the doctors and nurses took really good care of me and were able to save my life. And I was definitely a very unpleasant patient because I was combative and confused like you said alternated mental status. Luckily I got some help and have been clean for almost a year now so thank you for doing what you do. You truly save people’s lives.

    Hey there Doctor Mike, I watched this video a few months ago and it was a bit hard to speak out on this, but I just wanted to thank you, your speech on doing the right thing for your family members who are in the situation of possible brain death and horrible quality of life after whatever happened really made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own situation. My mother passed just over a year ago now due to a stroke caused by TTP, and as I was her next of kin I was the sole decision maker in what happened with her. I of course spoke with my close family about what I should do and what would be best as she had 2-3 strokes prior which she struggled to bounce back from, and after a few days she still wasn’t responding. I fought myself so long on the decision just holding on for hope, but I slowly realized it was different from other times. I decided she shouldn’t suffer anymore, but I always question whether or not it was right. Every single doctor and specialist I spoke to said the same thing; That the risk is very high for her quality of life being extremely poor, and that my decision is honestly the best one they felt I could make, saying if it was their family they would be in the same situation and make the same decision. It just helps me feel better knowing I made the right decision, and that you have the same view they did. I knew the doctors hearts were in the right place, but hearing you say that where we know yours is in the right place, just gives me so much comfort and trust in the doctors that I had dealt with. Thank you Doctor Mike, I know it may not seem like that huge of a deal, but it really is to me

    I’m a nurse in Sweden and I always tell doctors when they are about to do mistakes or if I’m unsure about their decision, because I don’t want to give the patient the wrong medication or send somebody to the OR if their INR is too high. Everybody’s human and makes mistakes and I just want the best treatment for the patient. The doctors I’ve worked with almost never get upset, and especially in the ER some of them asks us for advice.

    I was a drug addict. I’m in recovery but I’m happy you talked about it and did so with respect.
    I overdosed a few times and I’ve had nurses be incredibly rude to me but the last nurse I had was the nicest and actually talked to me. I overdosed from a relapse and she knew my mom was calling my phone and I was crying and wouldn’t answer. She asked why and I told her I relapsed today and she sat down and talked to me. I ended up telling my mother but I still had to get home on my own etc. I had the drugs in my bra and nobody knew. I didn’t have paraphernalia on me so they didn’t know if someone drugged me.
    The nurse hugged me goodbye after I was discharged and I got out of the hospital and dumped the drugs without thinking about it. I wanted heroin but I got carfet. Fetanyl I would of been ok. The amount I did shouldn’t of made me overdose so I know it was probably carfet at this point.
    And also- THANK YOU for what you said about physical dependency and it truly is the worst pain in the world. It’s the flu x100. And the restlessness is horrid.
    I hope any addict out there can get clean and see the light like I did. God willing, I’ll stay clean. Thank you for being a great role model and talking about addiction so unbiased.

    Love the content. I've watched a few episodes of this in Pre-med and was impressed. Now seeing your videos I've realized sticking to your books, watching content from doctors like you who give realistic and accurate information is best. These shows, even if they have some good examples, are purely fictitious and forced for entertaining not for educating at all.

And he says most medical shows aren't accurate, so it's nice to see your commentary and explanation that some of the medical advice and knowledge given in the show is accurate. I enjoy watching your videos. They are very educational without the patronizing tone many doctors seem to develop once they have a patient who is interested or slightly knowledgeable in the medical field.
    I have found that they do seem to inflate the drama and make Conrad seem so arrogant and defiant but the other episodes help level him out. He really seems to care about the actual patient, no matter what.. even when money becomes an issue, which hits home in today's society.. so many untreated or mistreated due to lack of money or insurance but doesnt make their life any less valuable or important. I really enjoy this show for that reason alone.
    Thank you for what you are doing. You are a genuine and caring doctor, wish I could find doctors like you in my area.
