Real Doctor Reacts to THE RESIDENT | Medical Drama Review | Doctor Mike

- We are back with another installment of the "Doctor Reacts" series and this time I'm covering Fox's new show The Resident. I have not watched this show before but in reading your comments on the last few videos it seemed like this should be next up for the medical drama review series.
Considering I was a resident doctor myself this time last year, I was really excited to react to this new tv drama. In your comments, many of you made it seem as this show would be more accurate than the last few I've done so I had my hopes set very very high on this hospital tv drama.
Matt Czuchry does a great job of acting the part of an internal medicine resident but the writing leaves a little something to be desired (from the medical point of view at least). The main plotline of the show might have to develop a little more for me to fall in love with it. The medical accuracy is pretty good but again very very dramatic, which is not new to this type of series.
I hope you enjoy this episode of Real Doctor Watches The Resident / Real Doctor Reacts to The Resident. If you want me to continue making this series please like the video and leave me a comment on which show or episode you'd like for me to review next. Love you all!

When my grandfather passed I was doing chest compressions and heard a rib breaking... My family was around like "you're hurting him, don't do it so strongly". And I just could think "WTF he is dying guys, what does a freaking broken rib matter"?
The same thing happend to me around 1 year ago but with my grandmother my parents were screaming at me to stop because "I'm hurting her" when the smbulace arived they told me and my family that i saved her life
Pretty sure a broken rib while doing CPR is a good thing most of the times cuz you’re probably doing it right. A broken rib will heal, a dead person wont
You were completely in the right. It's very common to break ribs when you're doing CPR correctly. A lot of people feel bad about this because you're breaking a bone and "hurting the person" but if you're doing CPR, the person is dead and you're trying to save their life. You don't do CPR on a living person and a broken rib doesn't matter in that sense - if they're dead they won't care (not to sound crude lol but I'm sure you get what I mean) and if they live then the bone will heal and you'd have saved their life
@jeff idk if you're doing cpr, the person is already dead. You don't do cpr on a living person. Breaking ribs is a risk you run when doing cpr and I think if a rib were to puncture a vital organ and the person couldn't be saved, it wouldn't come back as murder on you because you were trying to bring them back to life
@jeff idk I think there's also the whole "Good samaritan" thing, where you can't be held accountable for damage done if you were trying to help a person. Dunno if it applies to injuries done during CPR though
I forgot how much they made Conrad out to be a villain in the pilot, and changed him to be the lead character over time. Dr. Bell underwent a pretty heavy redemption arc too, because they kept adding people even worse than he was lol.
like. i thougt bell was evil till red cross came, hell till Cain
Looking back at the pilot, everything looks so different and not at all what the show is like further on
Iv only watched the first pilot episode. So good to know
I just started the show and honestly this gives me hope too. i consider that Conrad wasn't a villain but it is a way of getting someone to respect you and follow you, a form of gaining leadership, ig.

Omg I’m dying
Ov M thamks
I just imagined that and it's hilarious !!!!
Im now picturing dr Mike bursting through the wall as the cool-aid man lol
Bruh I’m dead
I think the light-hearted approach is VERY situation specific. Recently my sister was hospitalized following a suicide attempt with sleeping pills and she was fine but unconscious. We had this nurse who kept walking in like "Woo! Is she still sleeping? She sure is sleepy! Wake up honey!" And it was the most tone deaf, upsetting thing. I definitely think it's different if you know the patient well, though
My mom was basically dead in our living room and paramedics were joking with each other while trying to bring her back I was 17 and traumatised/angry
They barely tried…i don’t like light hearted in the slightest even now I have an autistic son and doctors don’t take me seriously and ask why he can’t speak for himself after I’ve said he’s non verbal/he had a fever and a doctor once told me because he didn’t take a piece of paper from him I should get him checked for autism didn’t ever take his temperature or anything
Last year I was in hospital for a similar reason and my blood pressure spiked. Having a straightforward German doctor was really helpful for me to go "wait a minute, I almost had a heart attack at the age of 28 because of the pills I took" whereas if it had been someone really chill I might not have seen how serious my condition was. I've always hated doctors because my Mum died I felt like they were useless. I went private for my ADHD diagnosis as the GP was just way too light-hearted so often. The NHS in hospitals are fantastic tho.
@@saharah101 I don't know what country you're in but I hope your son is getting support now. I have the same feelings as I lost my Mum at the age of 9 and it seemed like all the adults did nothing. Many years later I found out it was related to a new medication they had given her but they neglected to do a full exam after she passed away. It sucks so much to feel so powerless over something that has a big impact like that. Hope you're doing ok. My heart goes out to you x
Agreed, if something is very serious, be serious. We act like that in any other social situation, so medical situations are no different. It'd be weird if your boss was like "You're fired! How about that! Woo!"
@@saharah101 wait so he told you to get your son checked for autism and he indeed has autism? Sounds like a pretty good doctor to me 🤷♀️

Oh the irony
My STEM teacher was teaching us what to do when someone doesn’t have a heart beat. She was telling us about CPR and chest compressions, so I asked if it’s possible to break ribs when doing this, and she said: “No! There’s no way to break the ribs. You need to do the chest compressions under the ribs so you don’t break them”. EXCUSE ME WHAT.
I assume she was more of a TEM teacher than an S teacher
ah yes, compressing every organ possible except the heart sounds about right lol
Compressing the abdomen will absolutely get the heart to beat.
What she meant is that you cut the person open, get under their ribs, and pump their heart with your hand.
Chest compressions except do them on the abdomen and not the chest
"Back in the day, we used to catch translators and trap them in the hospital-- uh I mean they worked there."

Congratulations on your sobriety! I have friends who use, and agree with your post about stigma around drug use. That stigma needs to change. It will save so many lives.
Right there with you. You go girl!
As someone with chronic illness I can absolutely agree that medical professionals who smile, have a laugh and a joke with you, actually pays attention to you and builds a rapor and relationship with you makes an ENORMOUS difference to your time in the hospital and even sometimes to how you feel. They don't even need to be a doctor or nurse, it could be a cleaner or the lady who pushes round the tea trolley; feeling that you're not alone in a building full of strangers makes a world of difference to a patient's experience.

I really love your expiation on drug use. I remember one of my many trips to the ER for being a 9 year drug addict. I was actually home and got so high I was on the verge of an overdose and I passed out outside and it was a heat wave in my area. My family found me and rushed me to the hospital and I could only make like growling noises as a result of the drugs and I was severely dehydrated (so much that my kidneys were shutting down causing a ton of pain) and I had severe heat stroke (running an internal temp of 104) Luckily the doctors and nurses took really good care of me and were able to save my life. And I was definitely a very unpleasant patient because I was combative and confused like you said alternated mental status. Luckily I got some help and have been clean for almost a year now so thank you for doing what you do. You truly save people’s lives.
I need you to react to more of this show. It gets intense with drama, but also a lot of medical conditions that I think you would find interesting, and I would LOVE you’re take on it.

Fans of The Resident: One of the most medically accurate tv shows on right now
Doctor Mike (a real doctor): This show is ridiculous
XD that made my day rofl
lol same
Yup
The Resident is BY FAR the worst medical show ever made. I am nowhere near a doctor but I could not stand allllll of the massive and horrific inaccuracies. I tried to watch it but only could get through 2 1/2 episodes. Half of the last because I just could not make myself suffer any more. Lol
It's seriously just the WORST.
Lol, I know what you mean, I watched a couple eps of it...thought it would be something like House (idc if House is Inaccurate, its funny af) but...it wasn't....IN SO MANY WAYS!
Yeah this show is extremely inaccurate.. and starts off really weird! But it starts getting better half way through.
Hey there Doctor Mike, I watched this video a few months ago and it was a bit hard to speak out on this, but I just wanted to thank you, your speech on doing the right thing for your family members who are in the situation of possible brain death and horrible quality of life after whatever happened really made me feel a lot more comfortable in my own situation. My mother passed just over a year ago now due to a stroke caused by TTP, and as I was her next of kin I was the sole decision maker in what happened with her. I of course spoke with my close family about what I should do and what would be best as she had 2-3 strokes prior which she struggled to bounce back from, and after a few days she still wasn’t responding. I fought myself so long on the decision just holding on for hope, but I slowly realized it was different from other times. I decided she shouldn’t suffer anymore, but I always question whether or not it was right. Every single doctor and specialist I spoke to said the same thing; That the risk is very high for her quality of life being extremely poor, and that my decision is honestly the best one they felt I could make, saying if it was their family they would be in the same situation and make the same decision. It just helps me feel better knowing I made the right decision, and that you have the same view they did. I knew the doctors hearts were in the right place, but hearing you say that where we know yours is in the right place, just gives me so much comfort and trust in the doctors that I had dealt with. Thank you Doctor Mike, I know it may not seem like that huge of a deal, but it really is to me
I'm so sorry you went through that traumatizing experience. I'm sure your mom appreciates the care you put into taking care of her and looks over you now. ❤

I would LOVE to hear your take on a newer episode. There is a villian for every season, but the more recent episodes started talking about insurance issues. Greys Anatomy has had some episodes recently about medical insurance complications as well.

My parents are deaf and having an interpreter in the hospital or at doctor's offices have always been rough because they think that an interpreter on an ipad is good enough. But it can be laggy or not work well at all. So an actual person there interpreting is always best, and I love the fact that you mentioned talking to the patient directly instead of the interpreter because that's another big thing in the deaf world, eye contact and body language
Love the content. I've watched a few episodes of this in Pre-med and was impressed. Now seeing your videos I've realized sticking to your books, watching content from doctors like you who give realistic and accurate information is best. These shows, even if they have some good examples, are purely fictitious and forced for entertaining not for educating at all.

No but like seriously do that tho. It’s like as entertaining as watching the actual show!
"Maybe I've just worked in the wrong hospitals" I'm dying😂🤣
I worked as an interpreter and I think it's great that you made it a point to say you're supposed to have a conversation with the patient and not the interpreter. This statement really educates the masses and makes interpreting easier
The way he tries to explain certain things and explain what happens during the situation. He's so gentle and kind about being there for the patient and understand how to help them. Even if your not certified, learn how to help a person who unresponsive. I love him. Hes amazing
Just wanted to say: Thank you, Dr. Mike for these videos. They're not only entertaining, but I also learn a lot from them. Especially as an aspiring writer, it's incredibly useful to get a professional's opinion on what some shows are doing.

Love that you took a moment to point out how translators and interpreters are used (tech, talking to the patient rather than the terp or translator). Most people don't know how that process works and it warms my heart that you took the time to educate folks about it 😍
Sincerely, a former ASL interpreting student. 🤟
I’ve had phone interpreters tell me they don’t understand the dialect, and once tell me the patient is stupid.
I'm an interpreter, though I don't work in healthcare interpreting, and I also appreciated this aspect!
@Pagan Deva that's unfortunate and unprofessional for an interpreter to say that. Sadly, in many countries, cost-cutting measures have put pressure on healthcare interpreters and degraded their working conditions to a point where many qualified professionals are quitting and their positions are having to be filled by those who are less (or not at all!) qualified. Sadly, short-term cost saving measures cost a lot more in the long term in terms of costs and patient safety :(
I'm only learning ASL but I love it

As a fellow doctor, I strongly recommend you watch Code black. I feel the writers really think about the cases they want to bring to screen. It’s placed in an ER so you obviously don’t spend much time with each of them, but it’s realistic. The relationship between doctors is portrayed really well. And no on call room sex haha.
Paola Andrade but that's the best part😩....I'm joking of course🙃 but fr tho who really watches these medical shows for their realism and medical accuracy😂 (except maybe actual medical professionals🤔...I guess.😐) I tune in to watch exagggerated medicine:) like the best heart surgeon in the globe perform heart surgery on a dude in a plane with nothing but a butter knife, a plastic straw and a sewing kit.😎
Yes, yes, yes...that show is probably the closest thing on television to actual medicine while not being a documentary. Chicago med has some good parts too. I just hate when they justify making ethico-legal violations.
blessing B But...does what you want to watch also involve people having sex in hospital and senior doctors being an authoritarian ass all the time?
I agree with Code Black, but just like most medical shows it can be over the top. They inserted a Foley cath into a nose top the bleeding, then inflated the bulb with 10mLs of hot coffee!!
Dotti it's still on
This is my favorite show ever, I’m so glad you’re reacting to it although I didn’t know it until right now! Lol
The way you said "maybe i've just worked in the wrong hospital" 😂😂
But you really explain all the facts very well.
This show was on TV for the first time in France last night.
My mother (she's a nurse) has stopped watch 2 minutes after the beggining : it was too "fake" for her... x')
TO be honest I find it boring and too dramatic. The only reason I would "watch" it (means I am doing something else whily the show runs) is because of Matt Czuchry who I love since the first time I saw him playing Logan Huntzberger. :)
I think it gets so much better after the first few episodes and the writers figure out how to write for the characters. The pilot sets up a show that they don’t really follow through on and redeem some of the more irredeemable characters from the first episode.

I’m a nurse in Sweden and I always tell doctors when they are about to do mistakes or if I’m unsure about their decision, because I don’t want to give the patient the wrong medication or send somebody to the OR if their INR is too high. Everybody’s human and makes mistakes and I just want the best treatment for the patient. The doctors I’ve worked with almost never get upset, and especially in the ER some of them asks us for advice.
Thank you, for all that you do! With best wishes from the UK❤
Team work makes your dreams work.
We do not have much hierarchy in Sweden, which makes it easy for people further down the ladder to dare to speak out. Employees in Sweden are also expected to make their own decisions and do not always wait for orders. It's no problem to tell a manager that his decision is wrong and there will be no reprimands for such things.

I didn’t know that when Logan Huntzberger left Rory, he decided to go to med school. good for him!
It's so crazy, Conrad and Logan have really similar personalities, if Logan had gone to med school and became a doctor, that would be Conrad lol
Omg yes lol I’ve never seen this show before but I saw him in the thumbnail so I clicked on it lol but like he’s giving off a really creepy vibe 😂
BLESS YOU!!!!! I kept staring at him trying to remember where I knew him from!!!
He's been to law school too apparently lol he's also been in The Good Wife
Matt seems so sweet in his interviews...but he really knows how to play the overly dramatic Bad Boy...and I'm here for it
ep12 of the resident it explores an interesting subject which is
Suicidal doctors
i would love to see your reaction to it !
KhalafZone | خلف زون ايش بتسوي هنا يا خلف
خلف ! ما توقعت اشوفك هنا والله
this is veterinarian professionals in brazil on a nutshell
Where you are watching it because it is not available on prime video ?
i just started to watch the serie and love it. So happy you covered it! intresting
I am in nursing school and I learnt more from you than school. You inspire me so much. I wish we had teacher like you in school
Between the GOOD DOCTOR and THE RESIDENT I clearly chose Good Doctor one of the most accurate med drama lol
YASSSSSs
Yess
Apparently☺
Should I invoke that hashtag, given your "Pseudonymity" enhancing the potential for you relying on it for others, as well?
But you can also try the resident while waiting for tgd s4, im currently watching it and i prefer it over chicago med
"maybe i just work on the wrong hospital" lmao!
I’d love to see your reaction to Casualty and/or Holby City - kind of the British version of ER, and it’s spin-off set in the same hospital.
Also, “24 hours in A&E” - a fly-on-the-wall documentary set in a British emergency department. It’s be really interesting to hear about the similarities and differences between US and UK medicine.
Your voice at the start of the video jumpscared me so bad lmao still love the content regardless
You need to watch that scene from The Office when they are practicing CPR on a dummy 😂
Aspen Smith Michael singing 'I will survive' and dwight doing silence of the lambs. Classic!!
...clarice
Aspen Smith 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow please please this is brilliant
Omg that episode is fucking hilarious
"In your head please" 😂😂
Asti Karner HA HA HA HA STAYIN ALIVE
@@___-pm3wq best thing is that HIghway to Hell works aswell ;)
@@hillbill3502 Another one bites the dust - Queen also goes to @ the same BPM
Pls watch more of it. I LOVE your videos!!
I freakin love The Resident, the wife and I have binged all seasons over the last month.
“It is true that Surgeons play their favorite music... when they are operating.”
I can imagine some one playing Anime music during an operation...
*Evangelion theme plays in the background.*
No one who likes anime is a doctor and vice versa.
Ironleg
There’s no proof to back that statement up whatsoever. It was a joke to begin with... so why even bother.
id say lawyers are more conservative than doctors on average.
That would be me if I wanted to be a doctor
Scrubs, but i'm not quite sure how much you'll get from the first episode. Might have to do a later one to get more into the medical stuff.
I agree. most of season 1 is mostly comedy & introduction of characters.
Its for sure worth checking out. Everything except for Dave Franco's season, season 9 doesn't exist in the Scrubs universe 😅
Jan-Erik Svenning we dont talk about that season
The episode 'my lunch' is a good one with ethical debate about organ donation, maybe season 3 or 4?
What about Nurse Jackie? Idk
I have some scary stuff going on with my heart and this makes me feel better because when you explain all the stuff I understand more that it's not that big of a deal and I can get treatment and I will get better so thank you I love your videos
my mom as an emt always told me “if your not breakin ribs your not doin it right” for chest compressions
*"Maybe I've just work in the wrong hospital"*
*"Well, Dr. Mike, Maybe I was just born in the wrong year"*
Kim Vasquez OMG ACCURATE
After watching these types of shows. You should tell us which one is the best in terms of accuracy
he tells you that at the end of every video
I was going to comment the same thing!
Habib Hassan he does that at the end of each one!
I meant to say that a dedicated video for this. Top x medically accurate tv shows
SCRUBS
I love this show! Conrad gets better because you see that while some of what he does isn’t right he doesn’t care about money or what the head of the hospital thinks what matters to him is that the patient is taken care of and gets the treatment they need
Doctor Mike: “Maybe I’ve worked in a wrong hospital”😂
