Wow this is a great example of form and function combined in a single item! I love the design and the process was well done too. One thing you might want to try when using reclaimed steel is to use spot annealing to soften areas that you want to drill into. Simply submerge the part(s) you want to keep tempered and heat the area you want to anneal.
Thanks! After I finished this project I bought a torch just for that purpose. Before that I tried annealing steel using my gas stove which worked to some success, like for the drill bit darts in a previous video, but it did almost nothing to this steel, even tho I'm pretty sure it's not HSS. The stove is just not hot enough. In the future I'll use the torch for this and also to do some heat treating.
Here I am at 5 in the morning and I haven’t slept at all tonight. I’m in my last year of college and it’s finals week. And instead of sleeping or studying, I’ve been binge watching RUclips vids all night and stumbled across your channel. I’m addicted now because watching these reminds me of when I was in elementary school (I’ll be 25 in July) and watching my poppy (grandad) in his workshop. He served in WW2 in the navy, and in his spare time learned how to do this kind of stuff. It became a hobby that he loved. A few years before he passed away in 2013 he made a couple of bookcases, a hat rack, and a cabinet for my bday and painted them blue. I still have them in my room. I hope to learn how to do this some day to be able to do what he did. And also because Ron Swanson is my favorite Parks and Rec character lol.
This is the BEST marking knife/chisel i have ever seen...Ur work is AMAZING I could imagine the stuff that u could make if u were in a lot bigger shop and had any tools that u wanted...
Thank you. What I lack most is time in the shop. I can live with the lack of space and tools I started to gather quite a collection, but time seems to shrink.
Yeah i know what u mean...If any craftsman could pick one thing to have more of it sure would be time...But honestly it shows your true CRAFTSMANSHIP what you do with a small shop and you INSPIRE the next generation showing them that u dont need 5000 sq ft to make HIGH QUALITY stuff...And to be honest you present your videos so well and i love your small shop...Keep up the GREAT WORK as you always do.....
I am thinking of making one like this only bigger more of a small Froe with chisel end like yours for battoning wood to spilt down or chiseling off knots on a branch I think froeshisel would be a good name
Very excellent work! My father and I are both tinkerers and we tend to use a lot of homemade/modified tools. As such, we had started making cutting/marking/chisels out of old files in which I suggested to him of making something very much like this with the chisel cut blade both side and end. Also mentioned to him that if we ever used a broken file we could even leave the one top side and surface(away from the cutting sides) as files just to have that as an added feature. I will share this video with him for reference. Thank you!
Tim Punkt Nice! Appreciate the heads up. You sir have been awarded"One Free High Five" to be used at any time deemed necessary to you! -Note- coupon not accepted at Asimovs Rulebreaker as such an action would be deemed "stalking behavior..."
I really like how you left that back metal exposed so who could still hammer on the back part for chisel use and not worry about hitting the wood scales and having them pop off. Very nice.
Incredible! I drew this exact blade design onto an old file this morning (10/02/2018) and now i see your vid. Great, now i know it is worth while doing. Thanks, you have a new subscriber.
Yea, I know, it happens to me a lot! I think I came to an original design, then a simple google search shows hundreds of people that had similar ideas. What can I say, great minds think alike :D Welcome to the channel!
From what I can see, the terrible-ness of that knife is way beyond what your deconstruction can do. He should send them to me for proper disposal. Ps: my disposal process hinges on the items being shipped in perfect condition.
Another absolutely beautiful creation ! Love it ... I really like how you use a lot of things that would other wise end up in the trash or scrap bin ... great job !
Really Cool! you've inspired me to try my hand at making a knife or chisel knife! I was sort of under the impression that you needed all kinds of tools and jigs to get started. All I really have is a bench grinder, hand belt sander, drill press and rotary tool, etc. Really cool to see you make this with common tools!
Well done. Very well done. I'm going to make two. One for myself and one for a brother-in-law I don't like. My sister likes him and I like her and I have to give it to him, he does good work.
WONDERFUL, I have no words, always super perfect and unique precise product, wonderful work and video, well done and good luck, respect from old BG. p.s. It is a great pleasure for me to see that there are such precise people in the world!!!
You know, it's really beautiful. I wish I knew better words to express my admiration. This is only type on a page & doesn't show how much it's really worth, far from it. Everything that you have done & learned up to this point, shines through how you do & what you do. Refined technical skill like this is a joy to behold. And in the end, the best I have to offer is, "thank you?" There's no way knowing if you will ever even see this either. Anyway, thank you.
Very nice. I suppose I need to make a few in different sizes. Just like a set of chisels. Really nice design and nice work. Thanks for putting this up.
Brilliant. I bought one of these babies about 2 weeks ago because of its quirkiness. I had a swiss army knife which I never use. Chisel knife hasn't been of my belt. Its a get invention.
I just made one of these out of an old planer blade a few weeks ago. It was cool coming across your build video. I thought the idea was quite origional, but i see it wasn't. It is crazy how similar our builds are! They are close to identical, right down to handle shape and the small bit on back for tapping on. I wanted to show you a pic, but it won't let me attach it. Anyway, nice job, and "great minds think alike!"
Super cool video. Really educational and enjoyable. I lost my small home workshop when my house was flooded but when i rebuild it i want to use your video for a template to make my own. My personal prefernece would be a tighter arc for the finger grove. Thank you for making this video.
I dont think it looks weird at all, in fact i'd gladly carry this interchangeably with my microtech awesome craftsmanship & attention to detail man. 👌👌👌👌👍👍
Very cool, that looks like a super useful tool. I have one similar but with a more chisel type handle from a big box store and can see this being much nicer to use.
Fantastic... I've been looking at the Mora but this is a nicer solution. Of course putting your hands on a handy jointer blade for nothing always helps!
I've bought that jointer blade. A buck at my local flea market, since it was probably sharpened a lot, I think originally it was twice as wide, and also last time it was badly sharpened and the cutting edge was curved.
I like that alot. and yes they are versitile..Mora makes a knife with a chisel blade and alot of folks love it. I was worried about the handle when i saw you have to fill the space with extra wood...but it turned out fine..i woulda prolly used a colored spacer..and the handle seemed thin to me at first but the way you use it means that it works just fine. I would prolly feel more secure if the handle was wider tho..feel safer handleing it. But its a great way to use an old planer blade. and you did really well at keeping the temper and hardness of the blade by cooling it often. well done my friend!
Yea, I was inspired by the Mora, I've said it in the title. The handle was inspired by the kiridashi knives that's why it's so slim and plain. I used the same wood for the insert trying to keep the handle simple and also because I'm not very familiar with using the belt sander so I had no clue how easy it would be to shape a sandwich of different materials.
Stunning work. Perhaps an alternative to pinning would be to do wire wrap (steel or copper) near the back, inlayed into the wood. Just structural mainly but maybe you could even get fancy and do braided wire and such. Anyways, I absolutely love this as it is and may have to try one myself.
I wish the video was sped up during the sandpaper parts.. that noise sends shivers down my spine. But I can always turn that the volume on those parts, lol. But anyway. Awesome videos. Been binge watching them, cant seem to get enough.

Yeah link doesn't work
"Looks weird" I think it looks brilliant. Two tools in one :)
Nicely done through I do see one thing lacking .... your MAKERS MARK if I owned one of your projects i would be proud to show them who made it !
a friday, its payday, pizza hut, and to make it perfect the small workshop notification pops up life is good
LOL, thank you Alonzo, glad you still like my videos :)

Could have worded that better but here imma give you something “ r/ihadastroke
I like how you used the knife you're making to facilitate the knife you're making.

I tried to use it as a shaver but now I just have a chiseled jawline.
fffffffunny
Hahaha
“wanna know how I got these scars?”
I used to be a restorer just like you and then I took a chisel in the jawline
@@sanashabandri heh
One of the most original knife builds I've seen in a great while! Thank you for a great idea - and a very nice video!
The dedication abd attention to detail you put in these videos and the stuff you come up with is just breathtaking. Amazing! Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!
Splendid shape, craft... And result !
Love it 😍

Japanese Nata.
Just what I need for cleaning up dovetails. So far, all of your videos that I've watched are inspiring. I'm glad that I came across your channel.
That handle looks perfect for a filet knife!
What an absolute little gem of a tool. Very useful in any workshop, and pretty too. Nice work buddy.
Thank you Kenny!
Wonderful, as always!
Thank you very much!

That's a great idea to leave the file on the top of the chisel, adding another function to the tool!
It's like a dovetail chisel and an american tanto knife had a baby!
That’s a beautiful little tool you’ve made there. That’s the kind of blade you can use everyday for one thing or another. Great job. Thank you.
I actually like how it looks
No music, just the simple sound of hard work
Love this project! That is a large planner blade! :) Added to my future to do list!!!
Thanks you! The blade I saw at the flea market and was thinking to make a sword out f it. But then I came to my senses! :)
Sir, you are brilliant! I watched both of your video's with drill turned into an awl and now this chisel/knife.. Very creative and enjoyable to watch.
man! if you dont already, you should sell these. small batch style, you could probably make awesome money from the specialty aspect alone!
Asimovs Rulebreaker there is a German company called " Kirschen", they sell the so called "2 Cut"s
Tim Punkt Nice! Appreciate the heads up. You sir have been awarded"One Free High Five" to be used at any time deemed necessary to you! -Note- coupon not accepted at Asimovs Rulebreaker as such an action would be deemed "stalking behavior..."

the elephant watering can takes the prize :'D
A knife like that would be incredibly useful as a supplement to a standard camp knife for bushcraft. Gives me *ideas*
Great project. Two questions for you, how well did the epoxied on scales hold up and did the softening of the butt work.
I loved seeing all the uses at the end. Some of your videos lack you demoing the tool. This was awesome!
5:58 uses the knife chisel he’s making to make the knife chisel.
Incredible! I drew this exact blade design onto an old file this morning (10/02/2018) and now i see your vid. Great, now i know it is worth while doing. Thanks, you have a new subscriber.

I watch anything you can think of and this is my new favorite channel
Great video, I subscribed! 👍👍👍👍👍
A very nice chisel from oldtimer steel, nice craftmanship.
Greetings from The Netherlands
Really nice job, nice Blade, but you should not touch the mettal you just degreased with bare hands, everything else was really inspirating.
One of the best knife making videos I have seen on RUclips so far.
Un like pentru borcanul de bulion!!!
#Romania
Multumesc frumos!
traiasca uleiul de parafinaaaa :))) #Romania
I love it. Brilliant. Great idea and people say when something is so simple but so versatile "why has nobody thought of this before"? Cool.
That's a terrible knife and the hammer is too, send them both to me for immediate destruction (pack them well so they don't get damaged) :)
From what I can see, the terrible-ness of that knife is way beyond what your deconstruction can do.
He should send them to me for proper disposal.
Ps: my disposal process hinges on the items being shipped in perfect condition.
Lol u just want free things u choosing beggars.
LOL you figured that out huh? We want GOOD QUALITY free things :)
?
I'm a woman I'll use it and take care of it. 😁
This is a sweet little blade. Liked the concern about losing its hardness and keeping it wet, therefore cold. Niiiiice...
This chisel knife is so sexy !
Wu Tang Clan this was a weird comment but it made my day XD
Another absolutely beautiful creation ! Love it ... I really like how you use a lot of things that would other wise end up in the trash or scrap bin ... great job !
you could shave with it
small chisel is very good for delicated jobs, amazing man congrats

That’s the most adorable table saw I’ve ever seen. Knife turned out amazing!! I’m gonna attempt this, thanks for posting!!
Well done. Very well done. I'm going to make two. One for myself and one for a brother-in-law I don't like. My sister likes him and I like her and I have to give it to him, he does good work.
i super dig the chisel action, the striker on the pommel is decent, the edges are nicely done. great lil shop knife!
WONDERFUL, I have no words, always super perfect and unique precise product, wonderful work and video, well done and good luck, respect from old BG. p.s. It is a great pleasure for me to see that there are such precise people in the world!!!

You continue to amaze me with your ingenuity, creativity, and craftsmanship. Well done, sir!
That thing is gorgeous, looks pretty handy too!
The perfect gift to give a cabinet maker! building one asap!
Very nice. I suppose I need to make a few in different sizes. Just like a set of chisels. Really nice design and nice work.
Thanks for putting this up.
Считаю это самый красивый и удобный kiridashi!!!! Попробую сделать аналог! Спасибо за видео! этот нож реально запал в душу)))
I've never seen so much effort put into a knife creation on RUclips. I think I'll have to make a chisel knife.
Wow this guy is so good at these stuff
it took me a sec to realise what you wore doing at the start with the grind then water and repeat. thats genius!
Brilliant. I bought one of these babies about 2 weeks ago because of its quirkiness. I had a swiss army knife which I never use. Chisel knife hasn't been of my belt. Its a get invention.

It doesn't look weird at all. Awesome build mate
12:00 was worth the wait 🤤🤤 you are so creative and handy. I'm envious of your skills.
Wow! Impressive! I bought a custom made tool like this from India. I know it has soooo many uses. Thanks.
That's beautiful. I made my wife sit down and watch your video... after I watched it a bunch of times.
Lovely little blade, different!. Very nice work matey!. All the best.
Super cool video. Really educational and enjoyable. I lost my small home workshop when my house was flooded but when i rebuild it i want to use your video for a template to make my own. My personal prefernece would be a tighter arc for the finger grove. Thank you for making this video.

I do not think it looks weird, I absolute love it!
Nu m-as fi gandit nici in ruptul capului ca esti roman. Felicitari pentru munca depusa!
Very cool, that looks like a super useful tool. I have one similar but with a more chisel type handle from a big box store and can see this being much nicer to use.
That looks very functional and good looking work as well. Might be a good project for an old file
So it‘s more a tool than a knife. Looks very cool and useful

That is a very versatile and unique tool ! It's the perfect size too. I'm inspired !
Its nothing looks weird if we are talking about function, its looks cool IMO, nice job.
such a pretty tool you made sir, it made me smile
I love your videos, you have so much equipment, its all so interesting, and it also make me stress down watching this. Thank you
I wish the video was sped up during the sandpaper parts.. that noise sends shivers down my spine. But I can always turn that the volume on those parts, lol. But anyway. Awesome videos. Been binge watching them, cant seem to get enough.
Hopefully anyone who clicked on this understands how valuable of a tool this can be.
I love it. And it doesn’t look weird. It is quite beautiful. Imo.
This is one of the coolest shop knives I have seen, your craftsmanship is excellent and has earned you 1 new Sub. Keep it up.
I love the idea and your unique design.
Ive watched two videos now i cant stop
That doesn't look weird! That little joker is awesome
I’m glad I came across this video. I’m about to change out blades on the planer. I may give it a go
I love the sound of chiselling wood cross-grain
That is just incredible, start to finish absolute class. Very well done.
I really am quite fond of this design. I will be trying a similar design once I get into knife making
It looks so proper, very clean. Nice job!
that is some seriously good knife making skill
Nice knife! Gave a try at something similar after this and very much enjoyed what I ended up with!! Much thanks and well done!
I dont know why this is so satisfying
