Making a Carving Knife and Chisels - Woodblock Printmaking Tools

  • In this video I make a couple of small chisels and a carving knife. I make them in similar fashion to Japanese woodblock print caving knifes, that is to say, they can be disassembled at any given time.
the blades are 2mm thick O1 steel.

It’s like watching an old master as a young man. I can imagine these thing showing up on “Antique Roadshow” 400 years from now and being appraised at auction value of between 8 and 11 million dollars. Lol

My grandfather made machinists tools at Bath Iron Works in Maine where they built battleships and it must be hereditary. I'm obsessed with making functional beautiful things like tools, lights, lenses for micro-photography and more. I took a look at what I considered a very sharp chisel under magnification and was surprised to see how rough the edge really is, bits of metal going in every direction. And like a fractal, the sharper it got, the closer I looked and it never got "sharp" at the leading edge. I think the shards and bits are what do the cutting.
Love your work, don't ever stop.

At first I thought you were kind of goofy (like me) but the more I watched I realized you are quite gifted. You are indeed a craftsman and do very excellent work using time consuming but edifying work with minimal tools. My hat is off to you sir and I am now a subscriber. Thank you greatly.

Coming from a veteran toolmaker and artist, your work approach and practice is inspiring. You might dispense with the magnet and just observe the shade of red for hardening at transformation temperature. Likewise with drawing (tempering) - the degree of 'straw' color is important in balancing chip resistance/sharpenability vs. edge retention. I've pointed my fellow craftsmen to your channel to observe your rhythm.
You work like a man twice your age. [Edit] This is a serious compliment.

Thanks for the tips and compliments! however, I hope the editing doesn't make me look better then I really am. I make mistakes left and right. speaking of age, if you put me next to Paul Sellers, I look like just a clueless kid. granted, you can put just about everyone next to Paul Sellers and they would look like a clueless kid but when it comes to experience and discipline, I have much to learn. and I am happy to learn it together with you guys.

Long videos are good when they have content like this! Sharpening grits are measured differently around the world. The 1k / 6k is probably Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and their 1k is probably closer to our 420. There's a universal grit chart available that was created by some sharpening nerds.

I found this channel last night, and I've been watching a lot of videos trying to figure out why they make me feel uneasy. You look a lot like a good friend of mine who took his own life back in March. I'm not sure what the relevance of this information is to anyone else, but I guess I just felt like expressing that.
