As a former lego store employee, the new Stuntz sets with the motorcycles are genuinely the most actual fun thing in the store. We destroyed our demo ones with how much we played with them. There were skid marks on our demo table and the ramps. Other Lego are fun to build, but Stuntz are actually fun to play with.

I heard cat facts, I have been summoned.
@7:50 -- if anyone is wondering, there is in fact a train station in Japan where a cat works as Station Master with her own hat (with summer hat for warmer weather) and own office. She worked at the Kishi Station in Wakayama Prefecture. Her name was Tama and she worked from 2007 until her death in 2015. She was originally a stray cat that would hang around the station. The station was actually very close to closing for a while before they appointed Tama. Once the word got out, the station got an insane increase in visitors. Tama basically saved the station from closing which is regarded as a good example of the "nekomonics"/"cat economics" where cats have played a part in helping the economy. After her death, Tama was buried and enshrined, so she could look after the station after passing away. They visit the shrine on the anniversary of her passing every year. People visit the shrine year round and provide offerings as a "thank you" for Tama.
Currently, the new station master is Nitama (second Tama), who worked with Tama before she died. There are a few cats that were trained with Tama who were sent off to different stations. Nitama is currently training Yontama (fourth Tama) to take over when she passes. You can follow the Station on social media and see the different Tama themed cars and keep up with Nitama. (ekichoTAMA or sometimes wakayama-dentetsu)
It's also important to note that all cats were calicos -- which are considered extremely lucky in Japanese folklore. They're said to bring good luck and prosperity. All of the beckoning cats statues (maneki neko) are calicos or tri-color. Perhaps the station finding Tama was fate.

I remember trying and failing to 100 percent It as a kid lol. The reason that game is so easy is that enemies don't actively attack you, i think, unless you played king of the hill, so you could just spend x amount of time building up units. I found it so fun.

The AI in Manic Miners, I'm pleased to say, is MUCH better about following orders. Plus you can manually finish a ton more tasks now yourself.
Also, it's worth mentioning that part of the reason the other LEGO Island games didn't capture the spirit of the first one because Mindscape, the development studio, had the 'genius' idea of -laying off all the staff- right before they'd have to pay them royalties for their work. This is a particular shame as they actually had plans for a whole slew of LEGO games that never got made, including one involving the aquatic themes and pirates that has a brief teaser hidden in Island 1.

Dude, this is excellent. You really have a talent for this more long form type of video. I really hope that you put out more of this. I think your background in high-quality animation really sets you apart from other big players in the gaming video-essay space. I hope that you really use that to your advantage going forward to further make this format of video your own (the bit showing how your old disks ended up getting destroyed in animation sticks out particularly to me). I know that the animation is likely the most time consuming part of the process, but I think that I speak for most of us when I say that your animation style is truly special and adds so much to your content. I'm proud to be a subscriber and I hope you find a lot of success with this.

This was a pleasant surprise. I was even just thinking about some old Lego games recently and I agree that the old games had something going for them, at least in potential. Especially Rock Raiders. Never played it myself, just watched, but I really hope that Lego revisits it some day, even if just the genre itself. Lego star wars on the 360 might have been the first time that I genuinely loved a Lego game _(ah, the good old days of trying to play co-op with a Rockband drumset, cause we had one controller)--_ not that I didn't like any of the others, but as a kid, games like Lego island were appealing less because they were fun and more because of the charm, atmosphere, however you can describe it _(that and there wasn't much else that we had to play; also, my copy of Lego Island was also eaten by the optical drive_ :(
I always like when animators do these kinds of videos, it adds a lot to it, I hope to see more!

I had the original Lego Creator as a kid, along with Lego Loco. Can confirm that even when you got it to run, Lego Creator was buggy and prone to crashing out of nowhere. Lego Loco had a cool feature where if you did an “online” map you could send a train out and get a postcard back in response!

My family bought a LEGO games collection in a box, so I have some fond memories with a lot of these.
LEGO creator (the original) was, in hindsight, probably also just a tool to create short videos in lego city. But we always just used all the spinning action pieces on top of another, or tried to crash vehicles.
The thing I remember most about it however is that at some point, every time, we were flung uncontrollably in one direction and had to shut down the computer, losing most of our progress. Maybe it was just resetting the deadzone between building and playing, but I was 10 and couldnt figure out at all how to prevent it.

Drome Racers sure seems like it was suffering from the same identity crisis that LEGO was going through regarding Technic. They desperately wanted it to be the cooler older-kids version of LEGO, but the only way they could think of to chase that image was to sacrifice the all-ages charm that LEGO has in the first place. Realistic humans and textures next to even the more complex Technic elements was just never going to work.
Meanwhile they finally managed to hit on something good with Bionicle and hamstrung it entirely by sticking to those same all-ages mandates like "we can't have our characters being too violent, so they aren't allowed to actually use the unique weapons they carry."

7:08 I played Lego rock raiders a lot when I was a kid. The game had a system where you were able to name your workers/lego figures if you trained them and leveled them up.
Naming 12 or so Lego dudes was the best choice I ever made back then. Stories started developing all on there own because of this.
You had Ted who would constantly screw up everything and trip on spiders every opportunity he got, Bill who had the habit of carrying TNT to already destroyed sections of wall due to my poor commands. He tragically died in a mining accident when he blew himself up with said TNT.
Lastly there was Bob. My go to guy for fixing the messes Bill and Ted would make. Bob died though when he got hit by 2 cave ins at the same time. So I ordered a lunch break in his memory and made another Bob. In my head it was Bob's son, Bob the second stepping in to fill his father's shoes.
Somehow Bob the second was even more competent than Bob the first. He never died either because the disk became unstable and we couldn't run the game anymore. So technically he's still alive to this day on some dusty old save file.
Lastly, to anyone who just got a hit of nostalgia and is off to download the game did you know that the laser beam can be used on lava monsters?
It does a measly 2 damage per hit on something that has 200 or so health, but the animation the lava monster does when you shoot him is pretty funny. He'll get flung up in the air, do a triple backflip and land on his ass. This makes me think that the game was already finished, and the programmers put this in as an easter egg.
Because combat wise the tactic is pointless. The freezer beam already stuns lava monsters with each hit.

4:15 Can confirm - Lego LOCO was the one classic Lego game I owned as a kid, but I spent so much time with it, mainly just building whacky train tracks and watching all the little vehicles and people walking around. It was my first exposure to a city building simulator, and along with being really into Legos at the time, I was also just really entranced by all the little animations and activity going on with every building and minifig pedestrian. Made my little custom towns feel alive in my young mind. It also helped that it was really easy to get into. Didn't have to deal with budgets or needing to build one thing to build another thing. You had all the tools at your disposal, which made me click with it.
I would mainly grow up with the Traveler's Tales line of Lego games, at least up until Lego Indiana Jones 2, when my interest in Lego started to wane a bit. I did check out Skywalker Saga more recently, after Covid and an unexpected gift from my Dad rekindled my interest in building Lego sets. It was quite an experience seeing how much Skywalker Saga improved on the gameplay loop compared to what I remembered from the original Lego Star Wars games, and I had a lot of fun with it.

Damn. This video really unlocked some core memories of my childhood; I can't believe I completely forgot about Lego Creator, Football Mania, and Stunt Rally! I remember playing/watching my brother play a lot of these older Lego titles, but there were Lego games in this video that I didn't know about like Alpha Team and Lego Island Xtreme. I was really fond of Lego Racers 1&2, Lego Island 1&2, Rock Raiders, Bionicle: The Game, as well as the GBA Bionicle: Quest for the Toa (or Tales of the Tohunga as it was originally named).
Also, I love that you mentioned the fan-remake of Rock Raiders, Manic Miners by Baraklava! I played through a lot of it when it officially released- it was a blast reliving some childhood memories- and I would recommend downloading it if anyone reading this has played the original!
Edit: These weren't commercial games but I also remember playing a lot of the Lego web games like Lego World Builder, Mata Nui Online Game (MNOG) 1&2, and Voya Nui Online Game (VNOG).

Corax, you really read my mind on a lot of this. I've been severely disappointed that LEGO has almost completely abandoned their original IPs in favor of licensing deals. I grew up with LEGO Island, LEGO Racers, LEGOLAND, and Soccer Mania, and they're all very dear to me. Not to mention all of the flash games on their website! I feel this isn't just an issue with LEGO Media, though. Even the physical LEGO sets seem to lack much originality now. Most are based less on things you can actually play with, and more on models of cars and other static objects. While cool, the creativity and intellectual stimulation just seem lost now.
I love that you put this video together. It's something I've been feeling for years at this point, but didn't really have anybody to tell. Hopefully we'll see some more original stuff from LEGO in the near future.

I had LEGO Creator growing up, and remember playing it quite a bit. Something I remember: Once you'd assembled bricks into a structure (or whatever amalgamation you wanted), you could copy and paste it as many times as you wanted. I assume the intended function was to facilitate city building. My dad built a small multi-story office building; it's only features were the windows and an internal staircase. My siblings and I would copy the structure and paste it on top of itself, attempting to build the tallest skyscraper we could. Good times.
I haven't heard of Rock Raiders before, but it's obviously the original precursor to Power Miners. As an RTS, I wonder how much its design influenced CrystAlien Conflict. On that note . . .
Would you consider doing a similar video on some of the LEGO Flash games? Obviously one couldn't cover every one that ever existed, but I think some stand out as more noteworthy. Alpha Team: Deep Freeze seems especially relevant considering its featured counter-part in this video.

There's something distinctly interesting about the late 90's and early 2000's lego games. They were all experimental but usually did what they set out to do well (Except for Lego Rock Raiders).
A lot of non-lego games from the era were also extremely interesting to me, the likes of HotWheels Stunt Track Challenge for example, which were surprisingly advanced games for their time thanks to being on the PC.
I think if there's one thing I appreciate about growing up the time I did, I think it has to be these unique opportunities I only experienced thanks to the early Windows gaming scene. Things you'll never see again like kids flocking to big dedicated and decorated stands just for Lego games.
It's a unique and quite obsolete time in gaming but it was charming and to this day I go back to a lot of the titles, even as DVD ROMs go obsolete and scarce.

    • @lunarpurin8974

(I think I'm going to hide this in the comments since it's a bit personal)
I don't think any title in gaming has been as meaningful to me as Lego Racers. My Father changed one day while I was growing up... He became angry, aggressive and by the time I was 14 I didn't recognize the man who had raised me.
But for a time when I was much, much younger, I have so many memories of a good man. I used to play Lego Racers all day every day while he would man certain keys since I was literally too young to manage the items while I drove or vice-versa. While he had downtime at work, he would look at gaming forums and play the game in his free time. He used to come home every other day showing me some new thing he found or found out about. He had a particularly dry day at work and unlocked Veronica Voltage's kit and never told me how he did it.
It was a time early in life where things were plainly good without stupid complications of later life and the older lego games contain some of the best isolated memories I've ever had. These games mean the world for me, and although they're not the best I've ever played, I think they're the games that mean the most to me.
