2:34 For context, the reason why Spongebob looks so gritty and somewhat hyper detailed here, is that this is a DIRECT reference to Rat Fink! 🐀 Rat Fink is a beloved mascot within the world of hot rod/car custom culture, with it being made by the artist Ed Roth. If you're not sure if you have ever seen this mascot on anything (trust me, he's on like a trillion t-shirts and decals, and even got some official vinyl figure merch through different toy manufacturers), it is simply a very grotesque looking rat, with rancid green skin, MASSIVE bulging eyes, NUMEROUS building veins across his flesh and eyeballs, him wearing a pair of overalls that says R.F. on it, and he is usually portrayed to be riding a hot rod. Although I am not part of the subculture this mascot is attached to, I AM in the indie designer toy/sofubi artist community, and I can see clearly a ton of pieces and custom one-off figurines that were in the vein of mimicking Rat Fink OR are a direct tribute to Ed Roth's extremely detailed 'gross-out' art style.😆 His art style is NOT for everyone, but I really enjoy how overly kinetic and frantic his work feels like!
Considering this game came out in the early 2000’s when the Rat Fink craze was still rampant, it’s not really all that surprising tbh. I think I also remember their being a Rat Fink reference in one of the newer SpongeBob episodes
Spongebob's design in diesel is actually a parody of rat fink or heavily inspired by, which is the reason why everyone thought it was horrible. They even have concept art of another form he would have taken that looks 100 times more like rat fink than the design we got
@@Mr.SpicyIce it's more like a small parasite in the back of my brain that often is forgotten for long stretches of time, but never completely gone. It just needs the correct stimulation.
I loved playing this game as a kid. I just love how crazy and dark the thing is. It takes the SpongeBob ip in some super weird directions and I LOVE IT. It would be great if we got this game Rehydrated or at least just an upscaled pc port. They’d probably be able to reuse a fair amount of the assets from Cosmic Shake and BFBBR as long as they fit. That way development would be more streamlined. More people should enjoy this wonderful fever dream.
This game was the hardest spongebob game ever. Those sleepy seeds were rough to get sometimes man. If you didn't get those seeds, then good luck passing the last level.
i have incredible memories from this game!! used to play it with my brother on the ps2. absolutely ADORE the soundtrack too. this is one of those rare licensed games that genuinely has a ton of charm & still holds a big place in my heart from childhood :)
The Nighty Nightmares bit at 23:15 just unlocked a massively deep hidden memory cluster for me I played this game over and over when I was young like YOUNG probably 4-6 years old. Hearing that jellyfish spaceship ambiance felt like opening up hidden ruins thousands of years old
You might've played the other aWe Games games, like Enployee of the Month, The Movie Game, Light Camera Pants, and more. They re-use a lot of assets, most likely due to low budgets, small teams, and tight release schedules to coincide with the game releases. They have a lot of charm to them.

I remember when my local video store was going out of business & selling off all their DVD & Video Games, I asked my mom to get me "Spongebob: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman", only to come back with this game. I was bummed at the time but after hearing about all the stuff about RotFD, I think I dodged a bullet. Though the Plankton chase level still freaked me out as a kid. Also while on the topic of underrated Spongebob games, "Lights, Camera, Pants!" is a certified hood classic.
Creature from the Krusty Krab was one of the very first video games I ever played, and I absolutely LOVED it. Especially the tiny levels in the racing section in the beginning of the game
i know im 9 months late on this, but i feel like yall would love to know; i have a hawaiian floral style shirt with spongebob and patrick in the "Rat Fink" design driving their cars (light blue with pink character outlines). Definitely a good game if you played how it was meant to be and not with motion controls. As a kid I wasnt skilled in games so what really got me through was how interesting the game was even if gross out spongebob was a suprise at first I really loved the game. I did somehow manage to beat it though and probabaly never will understand that ending.

I played this all the time on the GameCube, I remember everything felt super surreal and the artsyle really creeped me out. But that’s what made me love it so much. I guess constantly playing this game as a kid (it was one of only like 6 games I ever had for the GameCube) is one of the main reasons I love anything “uncanny valley” to this day. Going for all the endings was so much fun, and I remember feeling so proud of myself once I finally got 100%.

That game never ended up with me, and long story short I still have that PS2 and blue memory card to this day. I still play games frequently and it’s all thanks to my wonderful parents, who I miss dearly. Unfortunately, cancer ended up claiming them too soon. I love this game so much! I had this on the Gamecube and I constantly played it over and over again until it was lost. It's such a strange game full of interesting landscapes and designs overall, especially with the thematic loading screens and whole connected dreaming aspect. I would honestly die for a remaster of it since it's probably my second favorite Spongebob game of all time. I also don't think you gave the DS version much credit, it's pretty good despite being very different from the original. It's also far more difficult, especially when you get to the Patrick levels. Also, to answer your question about the titular "creature" from the Krusty Krab, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the krabby patty itself since it has its own strange personality and acts as a sort of final boss. It's also the only reason their weird dreams happened in the first place.
I remember getting this game on the Wii as a launch title. Also had it on DS, even though I really didn't like that one. Awesome video, good to see someone talk about a game which few appear to remember.
I remember thinking the first level of the game where you race was the entire game when I was young, until one day I played past it and my mind was blown when I realized how much more there was, and I remember being so upset that I couldn’t find all the collectibles to play as plankton for the final level it haunts me to this day :(
This was one of those games when I was a kid that I had no idea or sense of direction as to what to do. Never finished the first level I think, I remember playing as Patrick and getting lost and never playing it again
the game is better on Wii cause when you play the giant plankton level, you get to swing the controllers to punch, shake nunchuk to stomp, and press the A button to fire your lazer eye, you get to immerse yourself and be the kaiju and smash a city
There was a phone in our neighborhood that was so loud and would ring and sound exactly like the phone in the patrick star dream part, me and my brother were so dazzled

the fact that the game ends in an alaskan bullworm jumpscare is somehow the most wild part in a game about fever dreams

HOLY SHITT THE NOSTALGIA IS FLOWING THROUGH MY ENTIRE BODY
@@cosmicsatanas what headaches? I never got headaches from it
I remember playing this as a kid and ive been trying to remember what it was called. Feels wild to remember this game.
There was a phone in our neighborhood that was so loud and would ring and sound exactly like the phone in the patrick star dream part, me and my brother were so dazzled
I remember this game so well, but only the opening sequence, I could never get past the first stage 💀 its so nostalgic but lowkey traumatising
You sound kinda like RamZaes 🤔
The algorithm blessed the video, and what a great one it was. Instant Sub from me 👍
8:45 I appreciate that you use Cyber Sleuth OST there.
I remember having the Wii version of this game, but never finished it. I swear those door cranks only worked when they felt like it
I had this on gamecube and hearing you talking about the motion controls makes me feel bad for you lol
