This is not a traditional karate at all. It could not be any further from a traditional Okinawan karate if it tried. It's a sport karate and that's where it ends. The screaming bejayzus close your eyes and it's like watching women's tennis.
I recently checked out some Okinawan karate here on RUclips, and I loved it. There's just something about proper, oldschool, fighting Karate that is just amazing to watch.
sport karate is more dynamic explosive and modern than traditional Okinawa when it comes to kumite which is stiff and rigid I have done both I prefer sport karate recent knowledge in developing karate making it more acqrobatic
The way they kiai is so uncomfortable, it's only Olympic TKD and pro point sparring karate people who kiai like this. I've never heard this in my dojo, I mean there is loud and intense yelling but its not awkward like this

Nah this one's a baaaad example but same principles though. Martial artists exhale because that way air comes out making the muscles more tight and the attack becomes faster and more powerful but these kind of sport karate guys go over the top and just shout meaninglessly loud losing the whole point. Also, don't put "UFC fighters" in one group as if they all have the same style. They're just different people from different backgrounds( styles ) that compete together under the organization.

After Machida and Thompson, people has begun to respect this art more, and even Mc Gregor clearly uses parts of it, like vs Diaz, the Whole time. They're stupid: you're supposed to kiai the moment you hit, as with a burst of energy from your breathing, like a stronger kime, for a brief moment. There is competition karate too on Okinawa, today. Originally karate came from the island of Okinawa and it had no competition and therefore obviously no rules, either (look up Kiyohide Shinjo or Morio Higaonna). It's similar to Krav Maga. The goals of a martial art influence it's techniques. What they show in the video is modern point sparring. They don't try to hurt each other. I respect that too. You can take some aspects from it and transfer them to MMA or, to a lesser degree, self defense. Some of those guys probably could also teach self defense classes, but then they would use different techniques. I think a traditional Okinawan karateka wouldn't fare well in MMA if he never does some form of live sparring - and if you spar, you can't allow injuring your partner, otherwise either you or your partner lands in hospital. When it comes to MMA two other forms of Karate are interesting as well: The Shotokan of the Machidas (looks a *bit* like the point sparring karate (deep stance, focus on distance management) and it works in MMA) and the Kyokushin Kai style, which is focused on full contact competition.

My friend, that's what they do in all styles of karate where the sport version is point based. In something like Kykoshin karate, you'll see the way they fight is different. The Shotokan style is NOT 'Shotokan' style...its just sports karate.
+MrPietrasantino I see you got some bad answers. Shotokan is all about range. Moving in and out from your oponent with long quick techniques. Learning to stay at a distance, finding an opening, then moving in and out. While in Goju and Kyokishin kai, you stay much closer. In Kyokushin you kick your oponens legs alot. While in Shotokan there is more focus on hitting the head. In kyokushin and thai boxing, you harden your legs alot. But in shotokan you harden your arms alot to block whatever is coming at you. Compared to Goju ryu there is also a stronger focus on takedowns in sparring. But not on the level of jujutsu.
Excellent speed and finesse, they all look very sharp. Very useful if you add this to other tools in your box. It is what you make it, traditional karate helped me a lot in my later years in power sports.
i practice kyokushin, but i'm trying to incorporate this light footed stance. You see more and more high level kyokushin guys do this at tournaments, with much succes. I try to take in everything i can from all kinds of people and martial arts. sometimes you gotta think outside the box

Its amazing what people think, this is the competition side of WKF. We all do the traditional side of karate too. And you cannot fight and score like this unless you have a solid background in the basics of the techniques and knowing when and where to use more or less power.The WKF includes multiple styles.
I hate watching the point/tournament style sparring because it usually turns into screaming matches over who gets the point. however, the footwork and flexibility is quite extroadinary and is the biggest benefit in training in that style.

john Williams no. there is more than 2 karate guys in ufc : lyoto machida, gsp, stephen thompson,urija hall,chuck lidell,frank mir and even conor mcgregor has knowledge in karate
everyone trashing sport karate, but it is not flat footed as kyokushin or kick boxing, not to mention muay thai, it is smooth, it is fast, in and out as fast as possible, by no means is it the best thing to do on its own, but its phenomenal for base and when its incorporated with other martial arts. That stance and movement is superior to flat footedness, thats why guys in UFC are having problems with McGregor, Nelson, Wonderboy, etc.
Sports Karate stances is side on for power shots so if you square the stances up slightly when moving in for power shot more like a kickboxing stances it worked in full contact you this with some classic kickboxers like Bill Wallace ecetra and Connor dose the same. I whish i understood that when i was young and training.
very quick on there feet and good control but not a traditional example of karate. jka is a better showcase and so is kyokoshin, unfortunately wkf is what will be in the Olympics in 2020 which is what many people see as karate
not a hater, i respect shotokan system myself but when it comes to speed, agility and precision things will be a lot different when there's direct impact. Your speed will definitely decrease when you actually hit a target. No impact tagging system like that is like shadow boxing in which saves you a lot of power

Striking styles are still valuable even in today's mma. When a striking oriented fighter learns enough grappling to avoid takedowns or to be able to get back to their feet they are often difficult for the grappling oriented fighters to beat. So work on your punching and kicking skills.
I am a blackbelt in wkf shotokan, now I quit shotokan and gain a bluebelt in Kyokushin, honestly, bluebelt Kyokushin is worthy than a blackbelt wkf shotokan.

for those of you who don't know much about martial arts at all. (the guy who uploaded and captioned the video. This is Tai-Kwon-Do. I used to compete in tournaments and trained in Shotokan Karate and in every tournament I competed in we had dozens of these screaming banshees. It did them no good to bounce back and forth like a tweeker from a pawn shop to the trap house. Nothing aggravates me more than somebody who sees people training martial arts wearing Gi's throwing a few punches and kicks and automatically thinks it's Karate... Calling this Karate is disgraceful to those of us who trained Traditional Karate... Again... this is NOT KARATE IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM THIS IS TAI-KWON-DO
Point karate guy here. They scream to show they have scored. It's a form of appeal, like in cricket. It shows that you are certain in your technique and can often make the referee decide in your favor. Never thought point karate very useful for MMA, but it's pretty crazy when you see Conor, Wonderboy and MVP

Not surprisingly, John Kavanagh holds a nidan in Karate, so the fact that McGregor takes some elements stylistically from karate makes sense.

everyone trashing sport karate, but it is not flat footed as kyokushin or kick boxing, not to mention muay thai, it is smooth, it is fast, in and out as fast as possible, by no means is it the best thing to do on its own, but its phenomenal for base and when its incorporated with other martial arts. That stance and movement is superior to flat footedness, thats why guys in UFC are having problems with McGregor, Nelson, Wonderboy, etc.

Sports Karate stances is side on for power shots so if you square the stances up slightly when moving in for power shot more like a kickboxing stances it worked in full contact you this with some classic kickboxers like Bill Wallace ecetra and Connor dose the same. I whish i understood that when i was young and training.
very quick on there feet and good control but not a traditional example of karate. jka is a better showcase and so is kyokoshin, unfortunately wkf is what will be in the Olympics in 2020 which is what many people see as karate

not a hater, i respect shotokan system myself but when it comes to speed, agility and precision things will be a lot different when there's direct impact. Your speed will definitely decrease when you actually hit a target. No impact tagging system like that is like shadow boxing in which saves you a lot of power
yes if we're common people without MA training at all. On a contrary, standing in a ring with a pure street brawler will cause a lot of trouble for no contact karateka like these guys
we do realise karate is a contact sport ! And I'm sure if they wanted ta they could out a lot of power in them punches and kicks

I am a blackbelt in wkf shotokan, now I quit shotokan and gain a bluebelt in Kyokushin, honestly, bluebelt Kyokushin is worthy than a blackbelt wkf shotokan.

for those of you who don't know much about martial arts at all. (the guy who uploaded and captioned the video. This is Tai-Kwon-Do. I used to compete in tournaments and trained in Shotokan Karate and in every tournament I competed in we had dozens of these screaming banshees. It did them no good to bounce back and forth like a tweeker from a pawn shop to the trap house. Nothing aggravates me more than somebody who sees people training martial arts wearing Gi's throwing a few punches and kicks and automatically thinks it's Karate... Calling this Karate is disgraceful to those of us who trained Traditional Karate... Again... this is NOT KARATE IN ANY SHAPE OR FORM THIS IS TAI-KWON-DO
Point karate guy here. They scream to show they have scored. It's a form of appeal, like in cricket. It shows that you are certain in your technique and can often make the referee decide in your favor.
Never thought point karate very useful for MMA, but it's pretty crazy when you see Conor, Wonderboy and MVP
