Knowing that Journeys was supposed to be a conclusion on Ash's journey, it is absolutely ridiculous that they had him compete in the Masters tournament with no old Pokemon. So we're expected to believe that Ash is just magically able to train up his brand new Pokemon in the matter of a few months to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Cynthia and Leon, who have spent YEARS training their teams into the strongest Pokemon in the world. Put aside nostalgia, it turns the whole premise into a joke.

    • @PokeFlixia
      @PokeFlixia 3 месяца назад +2

It doesn't turn whole premise into a joke
You can apply the same logic to the games. How can a 10 year old who just started their journey and has all new Pokemon that they’ve only just trained beat the champion of that region who’s had their Pokemon for longer and has more experience and training. You gotta just ignore shit like that and enjoy the show/games for what they are 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@PokeFlixia No. Like literally the whole premise that separates anipoke from the games is the trainer-pokemon bonding. This is beyond just having strong a team. The VG's numbers game doesn't apply in the anime and that has always been the case since the OG series and JN is the only series that ignored that. I really fail to see how building up an entirely new team is better than using your old team that has been through battles and gained a lot of experience already especially when entering a conference filled with mostly established champions.
It has been turned into a joke, his old team has been turned into a joke. Some of them were once aces but they're just cheerleaders and sparring partners in JN, like smh

6:13, the difference between Sun and Moon and Journeys is that Sun and Moon is quite consistent for the most part with a mostly awesome cast of side characters that I've grown to love, and the story was pretty solid. Journeys on the other hand was EXTREMELY volatile, as in the epic moments were SO UNBELIEVABLY EPIC, and the bad aspects were so bad they could have been improved by basically almost anyone with the basic grasp for writing stories! That to me is what made Journeys really annoying a lot of times for me.

I think one of the worst thing about this series is that it's basically a product, I mean not only we have eevee in squad because it's forced as a second mascot but Ash team includes Gengar, Dragonait and Lucario which are one of the most popular pokemons, instead of getting a team of new ones

You're right. Goh was a commercial for Pokemon Go. Chole's Eevee was a commercial for Let's Go Eevee. Even the Arceus special was just a commercial for Legends Arceus.
And yeah, I get that that anime has always been a vehicle for marketing the games but the older series used to actually make the show good. The quality was there to the point where the show was more than an advertisement, it stood on its own two legs. People cared about the show because it made the world and characters come alive , they were not blatantly saying "buy our products".
But much of Journeys does feel like it is screaming "buy our products". I mean they literally had a character named "Goh". It's hard to justify that as being anymore than than a obvious advertisement.

Here’s a list of my reasons for not really liking Journeys, minus the Goh and Chloe stuff since you’ve already covered that. And it hurts more because now we know that Ash is retiring from the anime and a lot more care should have been planned out for his final farewell
Pokemon Journeys leaved a lot to be desired
-Wish Ash caught more Galar Pokemon As well rotated his old Pokémon in the Masters 8
-Ash missed the opportunity to battle Elite 4 member's he never had the chance to
-Rose and Oleana are still on the loose
-Giovanni ignoring Ash, despite Ash is having more of a televised appearance in the Masters 8, when he should have a grudge after Ash personally stopped him in Unova
-Ash should've battled old rivals he lost to and won their matches to show how much he improved
-Paul should be training to become a Frontier Brain due to his history with Brandon instead of Gym Leader
-Speaking about Frontier Brains, they were completely ignored when back in Advanced Battle they were acknowledged as being stronger than the Elite 4 if not the Champion

This goes to my point on
-Ash should've battled old rivals he lost to and won their matches to show how much he improved
But yes this would've done Tobias some good to flesh out his character way more, because let's face it personality wise Tobias is a blank slate
His only rememberable trait was he had two Legendary Pokemon Darkrai and Latios and stole Ash's Victory in the Sinnoh League in a completely one-sided match
We could've learn if Tobias has a fascination with Legedary Pokemon, wants to become a Legendary Pokemon Reseacher
This would've provide an interesting interaction between Tobias and Goh when they talked about Mew
And imagine a rematch against Tobias, Ash brings his own Legendary Pokemon. Melmetal, Solgaleo and Nagnadel
(Since when Pikachu was remembering Ash's Pokemon, Solgaleo was considered as one oh his teammates
And with Naganadel, Ultra Beasts are considered as a subcategory of Legandary Pokemon)

What i hate the most is the disrespect for the regional champions. Imagine training your pokemon and developed bonds for years to become a regional champ just to be beaten by a seasonal team in the end. Ash’ victories would have carried more weight if he used his older and more experienced pokemon which he had more bond with. He just freakin speedrun the whole tournament with his newly formed team is so unbelievable.

Chonky Review Comment. (You have been warned...)
I feel like the main problem with Pokémon Journeys is that it both had a strong idea of what it wanted to be, but also... not really?
In hindsight, knowing Ash would become World Champion and retire, getting so many character returns, and traveling to all regions... it was CLEAR this series was meant to be a send off series for him. Exploring the best aspects of the overall anime, and focusing on trying to make it a satisfying ending.
Unfortunately, they put too much on their plate. Because on top of needing to wrap up Ash, they threw in these new characters who needed the time for development, AND this anime also had to promote Galar. So it had so freaking much to do, and it just did not balance it well at all. So many episodes wasted on just... useless episodic filler... when its clear this series should've focused on actually using the "all regions" concept to bring Ash's journey full circle.
Now that's not to say there wasn't room for the Galar storylines, or even the stories of the new characters. But when you have to balance that stuff on top of Ash competing in his ultimate goal and traveling to other regions. You can see they were too ambitious with their setup.
I think it truly did not hit, until they realized the Masters 8 was literally going to be Ash fighting a bunch of high level champions, and the HUUUGE expectations that come with that. It shocks me the animation team was not remotely prepared for this.
As for why Gou specifically ended up becoming such a lead... I feel like it was literally for no other reason than due to Pokémon Go's popularity. It basically became the most profitable thing of this whole brand. So they sidelined everything I just mentioned for episodes focusing on Gou throwing balls at mons cuz "HEY, Just like in Pokémon Go!". And that damned this anime even more.
I don't think it would've been impossible for Gou to co-exist alongside Ash on this journey... But him having this big goal of catching so many Pokémon was too much. Project Mew should've been introduced from the start. And his sole goal should've just been gearing up to catch Mew.
And Chloe... oh the poor soul lol. She's basically just a victim of everything I mentioned. They had no time for her with all this other stuff. Hate to say it, but there was no room for her development. I don't hate her and Gou, but it was never gonna be possible to fully balance them with all this other stuff.
Overall, the series isn't the worst thing ever. But it is a drag of a series compared to others just due to wasted potential galore. A premise this ambitious clearly needed more time. And with Pokémon moving as fast as it does... it just didn't have it.

The "around the world" adventure would have been great if ash and Goh's home base was in Galar and NOT in Vermilian city. That way when they are in between travels Galar would get the spotlight. What worries me the most about Journeys is the fact that the writers did not fundamentally fix a lot of the problems thought-out the 3-year run. For example, ash's team did not get enough screen time. When this became evident around episode 30 WHY DIDN'T THE WRITERS FIX THIS ISSUE?

    @dronicx4002 Год назад +42

Journeys... well yes, the animation for the final showdown between Pikachu and Charizard in the final league battle was just so incredibly amazing and really made it feel so incredibly hype...
that really does not redeem Journeys at all. It's basically taking "Oh Ash is going to school lets have some random trips to all the islands without a real feeling of any progression" in Alola (to be fair for Alola that does make sense tho, the region is really small, whereas all other regions in the anime were presented in their real life sizes which are much bigger than in the games, Alola.. there's not much they could really do) and then flipped all that onto every region. The whole episodic "one day we're here, one day we're there" really banks on the viewers being nostalgic of those regions and doesn't give the newer watchers any sense of understanding or feeling towards the places they're visiting. Also there's no feeling of how far they've come because every time they're just back at Sakuragi's lab.
Like there's several things they did REALLY well in my opinion, which is just how they bring the show and Ash's journey to a full circle. By that I mean Gou and Ash meet with Lugia and their final big event in the show is back with Lugia (doesn't have to make a lot of sense why it appeared again at that time but whatever doesn't matter, it's a nice symbol) and while they're with Lugia they see Ho-oh fly by at one point. really close up too. Which doesn't just mark the start and end of the duo with that shared repeated event but also wraps up Ash from episode 1 to now. It started and ended with him seeing Ho-oh. Perhaps that means his wish has been fulfilled like that.
That being said the rest of it was like:
Oh. you wanted him to have all these cool things?? You wanted Ash to have a Lucario in Diamond and Pearl, we blueballed you in XY as well for it too haha! We even had a movie that confirmed Ash to have similar Aura as some Lucario wielder ancestor. Well here you go. now you get it. Oh and mega too. And mega stones now don't have to be integrated into the design by an accessory anymore. right... Oh and also about the pseudo legend. Ash didn't get the Larvitar way back when, in XY he really had an amazing story Arc with Goomy, which unfortunately can't be said about him and his Dragonite.
Thinking about it... Ash's pokemon really were proper individual characters in every previous season. Like they've grown a lot alongside him and even when they had irregular phenomena like Infernape's Blaze ability being just next level and Ash Greninja for example, the show really developed those and made them a thing. Journeys... Oh yea let's give his Dracovish this inexplicable ability at the end for plot armour's sake. What.
Like I actually liked Gou being the one catching as many pokemon as possible, because honestly if you look at it, he's basically caught as many pokemon in one season as Ash in his lifetime but he's shown to always be there doing the feeding and whatnot chores, they have a few episodes dedicated to peacekeeping which is nice. After all if you think about it, most of Ash's pokemon are just left with Oak while he's off travelling more and more. Also catching legendaries... well at least it felt a lil better than some particular individuals in diamond and pearl showing up as trainers of Legendaries because in Suicune's example it genuinely seemed more like it was allowing the partnership and it could take off any time it wanted to. I'm going to believe that Virizion with Tokio is the same, although I must say that was a little.. lackluster.
The situation Koharu, definitely unfortunate. I had hoped for more, like honestly they could have taken this to perhaps teasing a new Eeveelution with her being yet another Eevee trainer in the show. but to be fair having a copycat Eevee that doesn't really want to evolve was quite clever. I just don't feel like her conclusion... existed at all. It's just.. speak with Lana and then that's that.
Also side note I find it really hard to take that Ash - even in the Japanese original - is hard confirmed at 10 years of age again, which up to XY wasn't actually re-affirmed in the original from what I've been informed. Ash in XY definitely seemed a little more advanced in age. But nope. Ash conquered the world in less than a year somehow. met all region's champions. and now is somehow the best?
Ash defeating Leon makes sense to me, Leon in my opinion was a rather weak champion in the games. nowhere near the difficulty of Cynthia and not deserving of the undefeated monarch title. They had to pull some SERIOUS bullshit for Cynthia to lose. Like.. Tokekiss?? Really? Dynamax? Sure serene grace flinching is a solid strat but even she should have (as a lucario trainer herself) known that Lucario can have the ability that makes it immune to flinching. Ash would have lost to Mega Garchomp, without fail. and the whole "eh I might retire" bs to make the loss a net positive for cynthia's character is just... not satisfying. I must say tho Leon allowing Ash to use all gimmicks was of course what gave Ash the chance to win in the first place, but idk... shenanigans did occur too.
And sadly the way the new games are structured I fear for the new series' protagonists being shafted in the same way that their progression in the region is going to be crap because now the games are like "oh yes pokemon school! the anime did it, the games needed that totally!!" it's... fine I guess. Paldea and SV is a really fun game. with critical flaws. like when they said "any order" I expected the anime style thing where the gym leaders get more challenging according to your badge count. but nope. the bug trainer is just weak no matter what gym fight you take her on. So right now I'm huffing major hopium that taking Ash out of the picture sets up a fresh canvas for something amazing rather than something.... unfortunate like how Journey and Sun and Moon just took a huge dump on Ash' legacy up to that point.
My opinion on the matter is still, he should've won against Alain and taken on Diantha for a win in Kalos, but refusing the champion title because he strives to be a pokemon master instead and had ash graduate there. and perhaps have a few specials like they're planning right now as to giving him the conclusion what being a pokemon master means. Would have been a much nicer transition into the new episodic format without the overarching journey anyway. Like in all honesty, episodic isn't bad per se, it's more kids saturday morning cartoon vibes but it just doesn't work with Ash.
    .... This turned out longer than I thought. Felt like sharing my thoughts and feelings on the matter, as it is a conclusive thoughts vid so if you're reading this bit, hope you enjoyed the read ^^;

For me personally, when it comes to the issue of personalities with Go and Koharu, it’s that they’re fine, but not for the Pokémon anime. They both feel better fit for a run of the mill SoL anime rather than Pokémon. While the anime has touched on deeper topics in the past, building an entire narrative around that for a major character has never really been it’s forte. And in the case of both, certain things suffered as a result:
For Go, because the writers were so busy with Go’s personal issues, his Pokémon ended up suffering in their own development as they ended up being overshadowed by his SoL problems and thus never really felt like more than props in his story
For Koharu, while her struggles may be relatable her story ends up suffering by never actually feeling like it goes anywhere to the point that the lesson they gave her in her final character episode is essentially a rehash of the lesson from her first; that there are multiple paths that one can take in life. And in spite of her narrative being about how she didn’t know what she wanted to do, they never really have her actually try out the various paths one can take in the Pokémon world, instead only having her try out Contests and even that ended in anticlimax with no indication of if this was something she wanted to do more of or not. In an attempt to maintain status quo rather than really build a story, that aspect of relatability becomes a liability for her

The victory of Ash felt shallow, there was no proper buildup, there was no hype, it just... happened (kinda like in SM, but SM was a good series overall), definitely Gen 4 and 6 were the gens that Ash should have won and it would feel deserved, but they did Ash dirty in both of those seasons, and let's not even talk about BW.
I'm glad Ash's journey is finishing at last, it feels like even the writers don't know how to keep writing him without ruining it, and with the upcoming mini-arc they are closing his story.
I welcome the new protag with an open mind, let's see if they surprise us or we get another bad series.

It's nice to see somebody discuss the problems Journeys had, even though this is a 7 month old video, I was looking for pretty good criticisms and I found it. Journeys to me was just a disappointment, if they knew they were handling Ash's final journey, I feel like they should have handled it correctly or maybe they did, but even then, this season should have been better. I only tuned into episodes that I felt like held importance to Ash's journey and nostalgia, plus his old traveling companions returns were more highlights to me than anything Goh related.
The worst part about the Sinnoh stuff, is the reason why the region got so much focus was just because it was advertisement for the games with Brilliant Diamond/Shinning Pearl and Legends Arceus, the anime was happening during what I like to call, the Year of Sinnoh. If it were any other gen games, the anime would have focused on them.
Goh's character to me, was well, ok? I disliked how he treated Scorbunny in the beginning, absolutely hated it, and then hated how he got Suicune, I know his theme is basically based on Pokemon Go, but even in Pokemon Go, you aren't that lucky and I just felt like they were rushing him to put him on par with Ash, when Goh shouldn't have been...
But his past traveling partners should have had more appearances, I know they couldn't get May back, because her seiyuu being sick still with a uncurable disease that effects her voice, but more cameos would have been great!
Aim to be a Pokemon Master disappointed me, while it was nice to have original traveling trio back, it sucked that the only person they ever encountered was Cilan and it was his first re-appearance since BW and he didn't even stay! The short farewell season focused too much on a plot involving Latias or randomness, when it should have been Ash, Misty and Brock visiting regions and meeting up with Ash's former traveling partners, because not only was it Ash's farewell season, it was theirs as well and it ended on most of them just receiving cameos before AtbaPM, but no reappearances whatsoever in the last 11 episodes.

Journeys was a mixed bag for me.
It had some highs, but they were few and far between, and it had more lows and so-so episodes then any other series. The darkest day should have been the plot for the first season, and characters from gen 8 should have appeared more often. Let us pour one out for the Nessa, Bede, kabu, Milo, Gordie, and melony fans. And I still can't believe that Marnie only got one episode, seriously she is the big character of sword and shield, the fanbase loves her, they had this on a silver plate, and you give her one episode, what is your major malfunction brother. And the last stretch was a bumpy road to put it lightly. To put it short.
    Season 1: completely directionless.
Season 2: this is filler, filler-er.
Season 3: so-so, oh ash is champion now.... WAIT WHAT?!

I know gen 8 especially the games Sword & Shield are hated along side with massive issues, however I wanted for the anime to make major improvements as well giving some recognition like how XY anime improved Team Flare and the gym leaders or how gen 6 gotten some respects thanks to the anime. But no Galar gets abandoned to left to dust so they can pander Kanto (and arguably Sinnoh) to the audience majority of the time.

It wasn't supposed to be like that. Journeys promised so much more, yet it failed to deliver. And it's kind of worse now that it's Ash's last series. I don't think I can say more than Long towards the series, so I'm not gonna. Serena and the battle against Leon are my favorite episodes and that's about it. Honestly bro, you freaking nailed it! You touched upon my major problems with Pokemon Journeys as a whole. Koharu got screwed out of good character development and writing, Goh caught things way too damned easily (and yes I liked Goh as a character, still do overall), and Ash's whole Masters 8 campaign was very inconsistent as hell. I wish there was more journeying in Journeys. I know what a concept lol. I did overall enjoy (most) of what the series had to offer but didn't like how Koharu was treated. In my opinion, that is one of my biggest petpeeves with Pokemon Journeys as a whole...that and how the semi-finals/finals of the Masters 8 was handled in general with too many damn clip shows in between episodes, episode 120 being the biggest offender in my opinion.
And overall, Koharu basically having nothing to do outside being plot fodder for Eeveelution centered episodes. Also the exclusion of the majority of Galar's characters (Bede, Nessa, Milo, Kabu, Mustard, Klara, Peony, Peonia (Peony's daughter), Gloria/Victor (Sword/Shield player characters), etc. The list goes on. Galar got freaking shafted in what should have been primarily its gen 8 anime season. I like Galar and a majority of the characters in Galar. Marnie and Piers should have had more screen time...same with Team Yell, they could have been a constant annoyance as Ash and Goh went about their journeys through the Galar region.
Also, Hop should have been introduced WAY FREAKING EARILER in my opinion. Just missed potential overall. I would have loved to have seen the Isle of Armor in the anime...same with more of the Crown Tundra and Peony. I loved those areas and characters in the game. In my opinion, Pokemon Journeys can be summed up with two words, missed potentioal for a good majority of characters( yes this includes Ash as well), questionable writing decisions, and a lack of "journeying" in Journeys be it a metaphorical one or actually traveling to new locals in the Pokemon world. Again, the following is just my opinion. I enjoyed Journeys overall but I have a lot of problems with how certain things were handled. Oh well, at least there's fanfiction.

I feel like the writers tried with the characters and story (except chloe they hated her), but the time crunch really seemed to hurt them this time around, in stuff like the masters 8 it was very obvious and some of the animatiors even compalined on twitter at one point. Also i gotta disagree project mew was garbage, Goh doesn't use any of his legendaries, it's rushed and all the project mew members mons get oneshot; goh doesn't achieve his goal dispite the fact that he's never gonna come back. Another thing what is it with the pokemon anime writers hating main characters achieving their goal outside of ash, first may, then dawn, serena, sun moon girls were different ig and chloe (she decides what her goal is but it's done like shit).
Also werid choices like not bringing ash greninja and ash's xyz team back for a ash vs alan rematch even if they didn't wanna do it in the masters 8 why not have it as a bonus episode it would've been great. Also the werid rushing which ruined alan vs leon, and diantha vs leon.
May and max never coming back, probably cus they weren't that popular but still. In the sequel series they character assassinate brock so he can travel with ash and misty and have funny horny antics again and ash is chased by a latias which he eventually helps but the writers decide he shouldn't catch it. Because the writers hate characters that aren't goh getting legendaries unless it's sun and moon. So many strange choices but I blame rushing from studio executives which just like modern pokemon games only makes the anime worse. Thankfully pokemon horizons is pretty good right now.

There were so many Galar trainers and gym leaders that were missing or weren't included enough. I couldn't stand Goh even though he got a bit better overtime, and Koharu just felt underwhelming. I get that she is supposed to represent the feeling of not knowing what you want to do in life and it's okay, but she was just...there for the most part. Idk man, even the finale with how they treated the Master tourney felt lazy. They did Alan so dirty and the animation for the battles was a bit meh until we got to the Leon vs Ash battle, which was glorious. Overall, it was an average experience from me. The ONLY episode that stood out for me was Lille and her family reuniting with their father. That was my favorite episode by far. Looking forward to the new series, I've been wanting a new protagonist for the longest.

I wouldn't call Journeys plainly bad, but I feel like wasted potential would be better fitting.
Goh was. .... Eh? Okay? Decent? Fine. Goh was promising early on, but unfortunately it seems like the more Journeys carried on the more he felt more like a Mary Sue as a trainer with such little experience. They did tone down Goh's screentime in the last third to focus on Ash and it was probably for the best.
Chloe/Koharu was just a mess. I don't even think she deserves the title companion as she never did anything. Sure, she had a good character design and a sassy attitude and played the sort of middle man in contrast to Ash and Goh. However, she says she doesn't like that people expect her to be a researcher and than becomes a researcher regardless. Chloe really just gave "I'm not like those other girls" vibes by the end of the series. Chloe's character also just became the Eevee Trainer after episode 48. She did end up having a couple good episodes but it's mostly due to what's happening around her rather than what's actually affecting her or her actions, Ex: the Glaceon Episode.
Ash was actually treated rather well and given a lot of respect as he rarely lost and was acknowledged as a seasoned veteran especially in the second half. Although the same can't be said for Ash's battles and Ash's team. Don't get me wrong, Ash certainly had amazing feats in this series but it would be an underestimation to say that Ash he had controversial and lack luster battles such as Ash vs Drasna, Ash vs Steven, and the unseen battle between Ash vs Wallace which was just a gag. Don't get me wrong Ash vs Leon was incredible but that battle can't make up fot everything unfortunately.

I think the Solution Journeys could have taken was just making Ash the main character since it was a send off series. Maybe Ash meets his old returning companions and travels with them for a few episodes before they leave. Another solution is Ash traveling alone, but he meets new people along the way that want to battle him. Of course Ash would have new and old rivals in the World Coronation series and he would also battle. I'd also give Ash a rotation team. Perhaps when he travels to different regions, he brings a new set of his old returning Pokemon with a few new captures each time he visits a region. Story arcs involving the evil teams would have been good and I would have loved if Team Rocket was a world threat. Also less filler episodes would be great since they felt like a waste of time. I wish Ash caught an old starter Pokemon he never caught because someone else had it during the time Ash traveled that region.

And here I still have a whole page of Rant about the Leon- (and Cynthia-)battle prepared (No, they were NOT great ... good, maybe very good for Journeys-standards, but absolutely NOT great!) - which I don't have at hand right now ... but hey, this is fine with me as well, the problems are the same anyway.
This whole series was a colossal, sad waste of potential. If you told me at the end of XYZ we'd get a series where Ash visits all regions and battles on the same stage as champions, and we'd got LOTS of Companion returns including Dawn and the Kalos-Gang, I might have cried from excitement... even after Sun&Moon I'm pretty sure I said the concept sounded really nice, and I was willing to give them another chance... and when you told me about the execution, I would have punched you from frustration.
But I'll just go thorugh the points by your list.
Pretty much agree on Gou, though at this point I really don't care about him anymore to spend too much time on him ...
Project Mew should have been his goal from the get go, or very quickly, not that completely nonsensical "I'll catch Mew without Pokemon ... oh, I've caught one Pokemon, okay, then I can just catch ALL OF THEM, because that somehow will make me catch Mew."
And in doing so he broke all the rules that were established for 20 years ... I mean yeah, Gou isn't unlikable, but overall and from a storytelling-perspective, he's probably the worst companion ever.
And I was about to start aggressivels typing when you said Koharu was done dirty from start to finish, until you corrected that, because her beginning was excellent, one of the best in the series, and for quite some time she was the saving grace of the series. And then those morons started to "develop" her, but not in the wonderful way of Serena, where she makes small steps to the conclusion of her Arc, but more in a "You're an Eevie-Advertisement now" kind of way!
And in the end her conclusion basically was "Well, let's see" ... just pain.
Now for a VERY quick summary of the rants I prepared: Fuck Journeys-Ash, the World Championship and the Masters8! Ash had no right to win this, I don't care if the show presents it as sports- or showmanship from Leon, Ash used twice as many game-winning gimmicks and STILL only won through a power-of-friendship/deus-ex-machina-chimera of the laziest and most clichè kind I have EVER seen.
Pikachu being THE Boss was awesome, but this is what ALL Champion-Battles should have looked like - not necessarily in animation quality, just Pokemon surpassing the threshold of what we've seen before - and ideallyTrainers who are the Top of the world in terms of competence and tactics, but most of M8 were hardly more impressive than your average Gym battles.
I also don't care if some backwater Island-Hillbillies call him Champion, he behaved like a rookie in that last battle, and the previous ones he only won because Journeys nerfed all other Champions (and Alain) in the most digraceful way ... we'll never get that opportunity back, and they absolutely botched it because they couldn't be bothered to actually get Ash to Champion-Level.
(Also screw the concept of Leon as uNDifiTebAl Champion)
Also, I think I've not mentioned Dawn enough in the last 3 years ... because it can never be said enough that they made Dawn return ... 3 times ... WITHOUT HER DOING A CONTEST OR EVEN SHOWING A PERFORMANCE!
That one sentence should already be enough to show that these people had no idea what they were doing.
Same for the All-Regions concept and returns, which mostly were "'MEMBER THIS?! Paul's here, behaving completely against his character, NOW CLAP!"
I've seen fanfiction with a better grasp on the characters and world ... which isn't surprising, since they're written by fans instead of a marketing-commitee.
So I think I covered around 10% of what this show did wrong, let's name a few things that were diamonds in a a steaming pile of dung, and should have been in a better series:
Serena returning and being one of the few characters with at least a bit of development
Iris as a bubbly Champion (even if they kinda fridged Alder for it because lazy)
The Bromance between our Queens Cynthia and Diantha (They should have shown their battle after the finale, seeing how the battles without Ash or Leon were the only really good ones it might have been awesome!)
And as much as they screwed up later, Koharu's beginning was one of the best in the series and deserves points on its own
And I guess that's it ... overall this whole series was a waste of potential and our time, so good riddance, and one last time: Screw! this! show!
Hopefully the next one will better ... I feel like I said this before ...

Don't get started on Koharu.....she shouldn't have even been introduced at all. She did literally nothing of importance or interest after she got Eevee. That Eevee was the worst thing to happen to her. All she did was visit people with different Eeveelutions, which weren't even for her character development but the character of the episode. The one exception being the Serena episode but it even than it felt like we saw more development from Serena since XYZ than Koharu. The biggest slap in the face was when she just decided to be a Pokemon researcher, she just sounded like "I'm not like those other girls" stereotype. I don't even consider her a proper companion as it felt like she was only used when the writers remembered she existed. She was completely disconnected with Goh and Ash, I couldn't even believe her and Goh grew up together because she hardly ever had any moments together, at least impactful scenes.

I think it is worth noting that there were some issues out of the writers' control, namely the temporary hiatus during the Covid pandemic, which probably changed a lot of how the series was going to be handled.
Anyway, it is definitely flawed, but I hadn't enjoyed a Pokemon anime series in years as much as I did with Journeys. Things like the two Allister episodes, the Galarian Rapidash episode, the Goh and Scorbunny arc, and the episode where Koharu befriended that girl with the Glaceon are some of my favorite episodes in the entire Pokemon anime. And I like that it and Gen 7 do things differently compared to the traditional formula that gen 1-6 had. Also the animation is fantastic, it felt like they sort of merged the best parts of the XY and SM art styles together. I still think this was a great way to end Ash's journey because of the return of old characters like Gary, Dawn, Serena, and Iris, and how they got to spend more time with Ash and he got to see how much they've changed. And the final two episodes were some of the best final episodes in the whole series to me.
And despite everything, Goh and Koharu are two of my favorite characters in the anime. I like how Koharu is more snarky and introverted compared to the previous female companions, and got to try so many different things like contests, and meet many characters like Serena, Dawn, and Lana. And I don't really feel like Yamper was wasted potential because it was never really Koharu's Pokemon, it was her whole family's, and it was more like a house pet anyway. For Goh, I loved his interactions with Ash and Gary and how he was the 'brains' to Ash's 'brawns', and how similar they were despite their different personalities. I also really felt for him because of how he struggled to make friends when he was in school and how lonely he was before he met Ash. I didn't even really care that he caught all of the starters considering Ash's team had really cool Pokemon like Gengar and Lucario. The Project Mew arc was also really awesome.
Probably the worst thing about it for me was Team Rocket. They were just really annoying and were unnecessary in many episodes. In most series they are fleshed out with their bonds with their Pokemon, like Mimikyu and Bewear. But in this series, they rely on that silly capsule machine for Pokemon to use and only catch Morpeko. Which is a shame because the episode where James catches Morpeko is really sweet but it doesn't do much after that aside from eat.

None of us exactly elaborated as to WHY and HOW Alan should return, so it's only natural that they would make him return in such a way (so as to say: "the kid has cried his little heart out, give him the damn lollipop so he would shut it) only to realise that 1. It wouldn't make any sense for him to return in a competition that hé has no business doing here, and 2 IF Ash were to have battled and beaten Alan, it would've more than likely make their last interaction after the Team Flare arc pointless (Alan outright admitted to Ash that Ash was the better Trainer amonsgt the two, regardless of the Kalos League).
I get it, to each their own, but if you want to peer pressure them to have him return in this series, at least make it clear and make it sensible, otherwise they won't have a clue...

@@paulanseaume7378 No ... that's exactly the low-effort attitude that gave us this crap!
If you can't think further than "we'll do that so the people shut up", you should be nowhere near any kind of writing ... same if you can't come up with interesting developments for Characters without being told by the audience. It's their job, and especially in an art like writing there should be a passion to do better than just satisfying a low-standard audience who claps for basically anything ...
And your points about Alain were absolutely not the problem.
      1. How does Alain not belong into the competition? His whole thing was always becoming stronger. If they wanted to bring him back, this was the environment to do it ... they should have done the same with Paul and Shouta.
      2. Yes, if you are as inept as the writers and think that characters don't need to develop, dynamics that were once established can't change ... but that's not how that works.
And this isn't about Ash ffs, we wanted to see Alain's development, but only got to see him serve as cannonfodder for a Mary-Sue character nobody cares about!
Moreover, Alain is only one of MANY examples. There was hardly any character that got proper development, and that's not only including the returning ones, though they hurt the most (maybe Serena, but even I would be open to debate on that one)... again, if you don't understand on your own that a returning character should be more than one-off nostalgia-bait, you.should.not.write!

@@luard8047 for 1. Alain wanting to get stronger was in order to cure Marin's Chespin from a coma, not to ultimately rob Ash's victory in the Kalos League. Now that he has cured Chespie, what do you reckon he needs to do next ? They found an answer: To have Alan continue doing Mega-Evolution research with Professor Sycamore and find a Key Stone and Mega Stone for his own.
And 2. Isn't getting his OWN Key Stone and Mega Stone a good enough proof that they DO Care about Alan's growth ? If anything, I'm even surprised HE was able to push Leon back as much as he did.
So if you don't think I'm correct, that's fine. I just want people to realise that Alan's character isn't ONLY about being Ash's rival in XY (still debatable whether he is one or not).
And if you think that I'm just pointing that out to just ONE character, look at all the others that they properly brought back
      - Brock: is a better Pokémon Doctor, has a Blissey
      - Gary: part of Project Mew and a less overconfident Trainer
      - Paul: kind to his Pokémon, even when they've lost a battle, legit told his Electivire to go play with the others
      - Dawn, okay, doesn't exactly show "growth" in any sort of capacity, but served her purpose for a bit of development for Chloe
      - Iris: need I say more ?
      - Clemont and Bonnie: Clemont has a Diggersby and Bonnie helps Goh catch a Froakie
      - Serena: pretty much everything she has endured throughout her own series
That's more than enough evidence that they genuinely do care about past characters growing. And if you're not satisfied because there was something missing, then don't you think that it would help to let them KNOW that ? There aren't any camera's following you around, and they more than likely can't make up for what you want PRECISELY.

Agreed that Journeys sucked and that nothing is going to amount to the popularity and success of Gen 6. In addition the points where the Anime was good that you stated relied on the past characters, for example when Greninja came back to train Lucario and Serena came back to Kickstart Koharu. The old saying: "It's about the journey, not the destination" comes to mind when it comes to deciding Journeys downfall. Finally when Pikachu literally "Fainted" (yes legit Fainted), than suddenly came back up and powering up and winning is a mirror to when Greninja lost in the Kalos league, until the writers realized were like, on no we almost made the exact mistake again. Doesn't change the fact the Ash's victory was served to him on a silver platter, I mean fulfilling what fans wanted for 20 years but, not like that in my opinion. P.S. Black and White is slightly better than Journeys in my opinion (except for Ash vs multiple Legendarys like Latios and Darkrai).

Indeed, Journeys had many lows, so much filler, wasted moments such as the lack of focus on galar and arcs were rushed. Ash’s Pokémon such as dragonite and dracovish could have had more moments to develop. Ash should have had more battles than having a bunch of skipping battles, like we should have seen ash retake the great class. And yes it was terrible how goh took too much spotlight that project mew in the end was a mess. Also the masters 8 felt small on the beginning, it should have been ash vs Alain and iris should have made it to the semifinals. But the ending where ash’s friends and Pokémon supported him and pikachu to defeating Leon was the best thing ever!

4:44 There was also no reason to create multiple new characters like Regina (Glaceon) & Kiley (Vaporeon) to introduce Chloe to every Eeveelution since several past main characters caught an Eevee & evolved them.
May could’ve been introduced alongside Serena in the Contest Spectacular so that both Glaceon & Sylveon could be introduced & at the same time, Serena & May could also both encourage Chloe out of her shell & boost her confidence.
Lana could also have been the introduction to Vaporeon for Chloe as she’s a water trainer 💧 & given how much her Eevee loves swimming & that she named him Sandy (after the shore) it literally makes NO sense for her to keep him as an Eevee & Sandy reaching the decision to evolve to Vaporeon & having Chloe witness it would made HEAPS more sense than placing Lana as the ‘not-evolve-Eevee’ trainer option 😒

Only very few episodes actually played in Galar, some Gen 8 Pokemon never appeared and OVER HALF of the Gym leaders had no appearance at all (Milo, Nessa, Kabu, Bede, Gordie, Melony, Klara, Avery, Mustard and Peony). And the characters that did appeared were also not handled in the best way. Marney only appeared in one episode, Hopp was just a cheerleader for his brother, in general the representation of Gen 8 in journeys was pathetic.

Ash with 4 gimmicks and Leon are clearly the strongest,
Ash with 3 gimmicks, Cynthia, and Steven are in the tier below that,
And Diantha, Iris, Lance, and Alain are in the tier below that
Alain is not weak, Diantha is not weak, Iris is not weak, Lance is not weak. Ash and Leon are just absolute monsters

They damn done did Dawn darned dirty, dangit.
There was so much potential here for it to be good, but it seems that the true apex of the Pokémon writing team was the undefeated champion, Leon. I am fully convinced that the writers truly believed that they topped themselves when they created him.
Only to huff and scoff that there were people who dared to question their perfect design, because he couldn't be too perfect. So they had to make him hopeless with directions and fail to catch Eternatus.
Much to the chagrin of the writers, I am so sure.
I will never forget the pure disrespect for the second Dawn return, Drasna's return, and the burial of Alain and the absolute humiliation of Diantha. What the heck were they thinking!?
Edit: I completely forgot to mention how absolutely dirty they did Koharu as well. A character with so much initial potential, gone to complete waste due to lack of airtime, relevant storylines, lack of spotlight on her, and in the end becoming the very thing she didn't want to be.
What a trainwreck this show was.

I very much agree that the series promised more than it delivered, more so as it barely had anything to do with the actual Sword and Shield games, or Galar itself, at all, which feels like a huge missed opportunity.
Something I had noticed about this series that few other people seemed to, which was another big minus towards Journeys, was how badly Pikachu's character was butchered, going from Ash's most polite, mature, sensible Pokemon, to a sassy, immature and disrespectful, almost antithetical to what he once was; this was especially evident in episodes such as Betrayed, Bothered and Beleaguered and Suspect Pikachu.

Easily the most missed potential, lots of promising stuff that lacks execution. Never felt like their was any clear progression with any of the main three.
Journeys had a lot of what feels nothing episodes which is crazy with how much content it promises. I don’t care about Ash and Goh getting mind controlled by slowpoke and rapping. You could easily send them on a low stake trip to Mt. coronet or something and have it be fulfilling on top of that.
Or better yet do stuff in Galar. Galar is the new reigon and it feels barely anything happened there. Yeah there might of been more Galar episodes than Johto but we’ve had an entire segment of the anime dedicated to Johto. We got like 5 Galar characters , Nessa didn’t even make it to the anime.
No structure really hurts this series. When I go back and watch XY or DP I wanna watch in full. I wanna see the whole Flare Arc or Sinnoh league. Here If I go back , I’ll just watch moments or fights cause everything else doesn’t even matter or is just handled poorly.
