    Just on your point at @15:30 about over 100% sRGB, that is flat out wrong. As HDR slowly becomes the norm, sRGB colour space will be the baseline, not the target. REC.709 is around 126% of the sRGB colour space and REC.2020 (the most common "HDR" colour space) is around 176% or sRGB.
    It all comes down to colour management and profiling. A >100% sRGB screen should always be able to clamp back to sRGB colour space with a profile, which is a good thing. You may want to correct that.

    Why should >100% coverage of a specific color space be bad? Is there not just an effective clamp if there are too many colors? Also, if a display supports 100% of a larger color space that overlaps with sRGB, wouldn't that make the display cover >100% and thus automatically be bad? A little confused about this, I'd be thankful for someone make this a little clearer.

      A not-sRGB (in both directions) display will cause wrong colors without color management, because the video signal is relative to the colorspace of the display instead of absolute.
      With the color management features like in the Plasma Wayland session though, as long as the EDID is correct or you profile your display with a colorimeter, a bigger color gamut is almost always better. The only exception is if you only have a limited bit depth and really big color gamut; 6 or 8 bits per color spanning all of rec.2020 would have visible artifacts for example.

    Yeah stick to software news because u dont know shit about hardware. More than 100% srgb is good, its always good. If you are using OLED or good hdr display your screen will have close to 120-135% of SRGB. Thats is good. It is perfect for consumption as well as for color sensitive work, movie post production, photography etc as your monitor is closer to the actual colors in the file you are developing. There might be a problem if you are buying off brand ghetto display from china which has amazing color space and no clamp or srgb profile which can result in oversaturation in certain colors.
    The market auto corrects itself in this aspect, cheap common market displays have cheap panels with not so high of a gammut 95-110% srgb, while much more expensive much higher gammut displays are expensive enough for the manufacturer to add proper srgb color profile clamp in case its needed. Fun fact: almost every user will steer away from srgb profile as it will look "dull" and lifeless compared to punchy colors of unclamped screen. This is why in every electronics store, sample TVs are always set the most broken oversaturated overbrightened VIVID mode or "store display mode" which sends color accuracy to narnia and back.

    I'm a little unsure what to make of your bit about sRGB. If you want coverage of the Adobe or PC3 colorspaces, you'll need more than 100% sRGB. And any monitor that does so I would expect to have EDID information for calibration. I'm not sure what downside you see there.

Windows help keep the monitor colour calibration because Linux has no support for my BenQ SW2700PT 2K monitor for hardware colour calibration and software is not available for Linux. I am afraid Linux won't grow that fast sa we think. Because when it comes to these kind of things then the companies should start making software or apps for Linux too. But only if they want to. I got a Tuxedo Laptop with a higher than 1080p resolution. But it comes with a cost. Setting the rendering scale to 2x makes everything too big, 1x is too small, so 1.5 or 1.75 is good but fractional scaling messes some things up. So I am looking forward to real support for fractional scaling, but until then, its just not optimal.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  3 месяца назад

      It depends on the desktop environment used for fractional scaling. GNOME is a mess for fractional scaling but it’s great in KDE Plasma.
      More importantly, higher resolution screens can also be turned down to 1080p while still benefiting from the other improvements. So doing this would eliminate fractional scaling issues

    • @DanI-xf6ym
      @DanI-xf6ym 3 месяца назад

      It as depends on your personal needs (e.g. eyesight) and the size of the screen, but you can always render 1080p on a 1440p screen, but the reverse can't be said... Even if it doesn't look as pretty... But now, with fractional scaling becoming closer to mainstream in Linux, I think it's much better to just mass produce the higher res screen, reducing costs and giving more choice/flexibility to users.

    Unsupported label should be renamed to Untested. But in the software industry the term unsupported is actually correct in this case. Just like Linux is unsupported by many devs does not mean the game would not work.
    I think there should be a counter that shows how many players are playing the game on the Steam Deck, regardless of the badge. That would help with games that have no rating or a lower rating. If a multiplayer game is unsupported, but has lot of players currently, then you can assume it is working. If the game has no players, then there is a good indication to not working on Steam Deck.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  4 месяца назад +3

      I dont like it when terms are chosen by the dev mindset when it reaches broader into users. Unsupported is the reverse of Stable releases. Stable doesnt mean stability but at least it doesnt make people think something is broken. Unsupported will make some people think its simply not supported at all

    • @thingsiplay
      @thingsiplay 3 месяца назад +2

      @@michael_tunnellI just had a discussion today on another place where I tried to explain that Fedora is not stable. People really associate this term with stability of the programs, not about the release model. That's in example a bad word that has been established.
      For the term "unsupported", I'm not sure what is better. It's pretty accurate, because they don't support it officially. It's also a widely used term to describe exactly that, for any game or application, so its not a bad choice. Maybe there is a weird term, but that would be probably more confusing. Therefore problem is, there is no term that is perfect. There is probably a term that you personally like most, or another one that I like most for this. Every of them are problematic. Choose your poison I guess.
      And BTW thank you for reading the comments and replying to them from time to time. 🙂

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  3 месяца назад +1

      This is why I hate the term Stable being used as a branch or label. Users will never adopt it as anything but "stability". This is also why the term "free software" is terrible because Users on the whole will never adopt it to mean "freedom" they will always see it as "free in cost" because that is what the term is used for in 99% of interactions between people and things. Free Software creates a burden to explain due to confusion for something being "Free" while also costing money. Stable at least creates a positive assumption.
      While yes Steam does not support these games but they dont really support the Verified either. I think they are using it to mean that it doesnt work which is what people think it means but they are using it as a defacto baseline for things they dont know whether it works or not and assuming it doesnt. Untested or Unknown are both better I think. But like you said, pros and cons regardless of what is picked.

Requiring users to preemptively manually set this, that fact alone kills 99.9% of its value. On the other hand, Shake Cursor is something people will do out of frustration automatically when they lose track of it, I have seen people do this.

      @@michael_tunnell The design could be better, sure. But the keyboard shortcut has been there for ages in System Settings, exactly where it belongs and where one would expect to find it. I have enjoyed the keyboard shortcut for centering mouse cursor, as well as windows, for donkey years and cannot recommend it enough.

      @@michael_tunnell for the point of reference I am using Ubuntu and I made gnome to look like the old Unity. In the KDE file manager got the usual suspects in the left bar, plus 2-3 separate lists, and and data about the partition, and the tree graphics with nodes for the actual folders... I got the concept of tree, just put the path of the folder and let me click on individual folder in that path, I need just 1 list in the left bar... my list, let me, in the bottom bar on the screen, in their quest to offer more and more, is now treated as an app space, and I just want to put links to apps and folders and I could not put folders in there... they try way to hard.

      @@michael_tunnell well lots of small things, like the laft panel in file manager, you got 3 separate lists with locations, available space on the drive, when I just need a single one... mine. They also give you visual representation of the tree folder, like we do not understand the concept, and so on. In their quest to give you everything they made an app drawer out of start bar, and I can't pin specific folders in there and so on. They wanted to do way too much, and the worst part is, it actually fucked up Gnom. Now some apps will not recognize dark mode.... no, just no. The experience was so bad that I won't touch it for at least 20 more years.

      Dolphin allows you to customize the left sidebar. You can disable those sections if you want to but it is normal for those to be included just as they are with every OS filemanager. For example, macOS is claimed to be super user friendly and they have multiple sections of locations in the sidebar. Dolphin supports multiple view styles, yes it has tree style but also standard icons. Icons is the default style too. I am curious now what distro you tried it on and what version of Plasma it is. I dont understand the "app drawer out of the start bar", that's what Windows does too so not sure how that is too much. How did KDE affect GNOME at all? GNOME apps are built a very particular way and they even made a website complaining about distros and otther DEs theming their apps. (stopthemingmy.app/) I think its more accurate to blame GNOME for the look of their apps rather than KDE.

      okay I missed the first comment about using Ubuntu. If you installed KDE Plasma inside of a pre-existing install of Ubuntu (proper) then your testing environment was setup to fail. The reason Kubuntu exists is to offer KDE Plasma instead of what comes with Ubuntu because Ubuntu is so customized that simply installing KDE Plasma will not end well. If you tested on Kubuntu then thats fine but if you installed in an already installed version of Ubuntu then I would expect the experience to be clunky and probably even broken in some ways.
      Even if you did try Kubuntu then you would not be using the latest KDE Plasma as Kubuntu 24.04 ships with KDE Plasma 5.27 not Plasma 6. I am very curious how you did these tests but what it sounds like is that you had a subpar experience because the testing environment itself was subpar.
      As a side note Ubuntu has always made GNOME look like Unity since they switched back so curious what you did on top of that?

      The text is tiny if I watch the video on my phone in portrait mode, which is how I always watch. I did switch to landscape to see if it was better and the text was fine like that. I just don't like holding the phone in landscape and don't like my screen flipping when it's not locked into portrait mode.
      It's a user issue, not a text size issue.

      lol @SeanClarke I appreciate the honesty of that last line, thats funny. There are times where the text is not large enough for portrait mode on a phone, that's true for sure but sadly that is due to how the text is laid out on the website when the screenshot is taken, sometimes websites just dont optimize well for youtubers to screenshot their text :D

    You know there is no need to say gnu/linux anymore right? Back in the day before GNU had a kernel and where in the works with kernels yes. But the other kernels are dead. Forgive my optionion its just linux with gnu tools on the side. Even Gnome is not a GNU project anymore. I didn't mean to be come across like an ahole but its not needed to be called gnu/linux anymore. I would say just call it linux .. but its up to you. I wont blame you just wanted to add my 2 cents.

    • @ojo2337

      I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
      Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
      There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

    Linux community and Linux journalism is so desperate for new, they will report on every announcement of a beta release for a new incremental update. It's sad.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  2 месяца назад

      I covered it because it’s actually a big deal. KDE Plasma is one of the most important desktop environments and the beta coverage is to let people know what is in it and inform those who want to contribute to testing that it’s ready for testing. I didn’t spend a ton of time on it in this episode because it’s a beta and I said that in the episode. The actual release is when I did a deep dive. Besides Plasma 6.1 is not an “incremental update”, it’s the next big update of the desktop. 6.1.1 or 6.1.2 are incremental updates and I don’t cover those on the show. Also this is a weekly show, so I cover what happened over the course of that week. Some weeks are big news weeks and others aren’t, that’s the nature of any kind of news content.
