It hurts my heart when you are critical of yourself - we love you exactly how you are! We love to see your life just as it is! Showing us when things don’t go smoothly is why I love your content. I dont feel so alone in this mom/wife/cook/gardner/etc journey of life. It’s taken me years to figure out an arid garden and I still struggle and fail often. You are phenomenal at what you do. I often think “I don’t know how she does it all but she makes it look easy”! And I love how transparent you are about money, revenue and sponsors. TL;DR - dont ever stop being you, please. ❤

Oh my goodness, Nyssa, you are such a GEM !💜💫 ,,, and you have no idea how very much we all enjoy you...simply being yourself. 😍 These catch-up videos are so great... sure! do a weekly catch-up... it's enormously interesting to us, making it seem that we are part of your extended community. Yes, some sort of a regular "time set aside to do your video work" will allow you more satisfaction in achieving the things you want... and just put out videos/posts that are more "raw" than your usual "wish to excel" ones. That will help you take the pressure off yourself... remember that raw is very relatable! 💜💙💚💫 You're still so hard on yourself, re the garden. This Summer has been absolutely savage!!! Your garden will only get better, now that you've put in so much to set it up, with minimal input. Once the watering systems are in place, the garden will be thriving. Bless you all. Be Happy! You are enough, exactly as you are. Enjoy being your self. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌼🌺🌟🐞🪲🐝💐🌟🌠

Your content is fine. Taking us on your journey with the garden gives us ideas as to what may or may not work in our own gardens so please continue with the garden updates. It is not a failure but a minor setback. The weather has been atrocious for all of us gardeners and the heat may be impacting the critters so they are looking for an easy meal. You have already problem solved some of the potential things that may have impacted the garden and that is just part of a learning curve. When the weather cools down the garden will probably pick up. Love seeing your artwork (I cannot draw at all so I appreciate all artwork). I am curious about how you homeschool your children as our state has strict guidelines. I am always fascinated how schooling is so different in other countries. Maybe a video about this? I enjoy all your videos Nissa.

I agree with your statement regarding shopping beforehand of the pantry challenge. I don’t shop extra. My main purpose is to be intentional and use what I have preserved from the garden. I love your videos and you have been a great influence. ❤

I totally agree with you on the buying a bunch of stuff to prepare for a pantry challenge. I have been surprised to see how many channels did this. I had a conversation with my husband about it. It’s not a challenge if you go spend 2 months worth of grocery budget to get thru a 2 month pantry challenge. Where is the sense in that? And my fear has always been that if I do a pantry challenge and wipe out my storage, I would over spend the month coming out of it to restock my shelves. Part of the reason I preserve food is for food security. I am good about rotating thru my stock to keep things from going bad. I am also fairly good at only buying things we use. I like to keep a certain amount of stuff on hand. That being said, I understand wanting to get thru the jars I have canned over the grow season in order to free up space for the next grow season and to be able to see what I may need to grow more or less of. But generally I think you can get an idea of that just by rotating thru what you preserve. But the concept of buying more to go thru a no buy challenge literally makes no sense and defeats the entire purpose of the challenge. Very few channels actually do the challenge the way Jessica does. She actually makes sense in what she does.
And I was wondering if you could possibly have one of the kids help you with your website? Like have one put up your recipes for you as a school project or for a small monthly allowance? I used to have my son help me with my business because he is so strong in math and I’m not. I’d give him a small allowance as payment. It was a win win bc I had the help I needed and he had some income to use for video games or outings with friends etc. just a thought.

Love your rambling/squirreling so please continue. The Pantry Challenge was created by Three Rivers Homestead. The main thing about the pantry challenge is that each person participating creates their own rules. Some do shop before hand, some will continue to do some shopping during the month, and others, like me, will not do any shopping. The main purpose is not to save money but to rotate your stockpile and use up the things that are getting old or that you have a surplus of. Some people use up the stuff in a particular storage area, such as the freezer, because they have chickens or pigs that are going to need to be sent to "freezer camp". I agree that purchasing before hand defeats the purpose but everyone seems to agree that depleting your stock is not wise. Hope this clarifies it a bit but I do believe that you are doing a pantry challenge every month and I get inspiration from the meals that you create (though it does make me very hungry).

You are not failing in the garden Nyssa. Every gardner has dissapoints with different crops. I've had tomatoes of different types do well while others didn't grow well when they are three meters apart. The learnings for me was the containers I used. The successful one was a mixed garden with beans, tomatoes and peppers. The other was a much smaller self watering container. This one had beans and snow peas included. They both have watering devices. I won't be using the smaller contai er again. Some years do always do well for certain crops. It takes years to build good soil. I find Mark from self succulent me, Charles Dowding as my goto channels to watch. Mark started from scratch using mostly raised beds. He has over 2 m viewers. You have determination to try different plants. You will get there. I have used mushroom compost in the past, however I mostly use the compressed peat blocks with compost. Your on the right track with the watering systems as regular watering is important. Believe it or not I have learnt quite a lot from your videos. Cheers

    Hi dear Nyssa! 💕
I have missed you sooo much! I come here several times each day, hoping to find you and an update on you, the family and your off-grid homestead! I know you are terrible busy with soooo much you do now - and all that you are planing to do - in this New Year! Just know we ALL miss you when we don't see your pretty smiling face, but we understand completely! Just makes for such a sweet visit, when our Dear Nyssa can come and share with us in a video! 😊
You certainly have a lot planned for this ensuing year of 2024; and we will certainly be supporting you in every way, indeed! Sooo exciting to hear you are getting a new vacuum cleaner! I am so happy for you and that great news! It will help out in so many wonderful ways for sure. I am happy for you!
We are having some freezing weather here in "sunny" California. I live in a large citrus-growing area, and have been hearing the wind-machines each night as their huge propellers whine like jet engines to move the cold cold air around the orange and lemon groves to keep the moisture from settling on the fruit/trees and freezing the fruit especially. I know our ranchers would indeed sympathize with you in gardening, as they too, worry sooo much over their ranches and the produce's state of well being. Sometimes it is the lack of water they so badly need, and sometimes the freezing cold nights of winter! Mother Nature is not always in sync with the needs of the crops and gardens, be it here on our side of the pond or there with you dear folks in Australia.
Keeping you and the family in thought, and carrying each of you in our prayers for a wonderful New Year in every way!
    Love to you, Nyssa!
    Carol in California ❤🙏

100% add one of these videos weekly Nyssa, gonna be selfish, I'll enjoy it !
The only tomatoes I grew that done well were cherry tomatoes only had about 4 plants and 1 spearmint plant, everything else was utter rubbish. The weather was crap other extreme to yours, no sun and heaps of rain. Take the positive going forward, you have the beds setup and a lot of the irrigation, you'll get there. Laughed at how happy you were about the hoover, its the little things, remember you are looking to do all you do in some extreme heat, no easy feat. Will say what my mother in law used to say to me; "look after No 1 as, no one else will"

I have one teenager left at home, so it is only the three of us, and I've been at this homemaking thing a long time, but you have given me new ideas and inspirations. Just the other day my husband talked about buying a BBQ pizza oven thing. I completely agree that you do a pantry challenge every shopping trip. And those folks who do big shops before a challenge, really don't count, I agree. After 6 weeks away, I came home and purchased 4 half gallons of half &half and a quart of whipping cream and then I began the pantry challenge. At 30 days in I bought 2 bins of spinach and 2 bags of baby carrots for fresh for our holiday meals. I intend to continue with the pantry challenge until April, minimum, longer if possible. But I am an over exuberant empty nester canner and preserver. So for us we need to reduce my over flowing pantry. All that being said, keep going. We struggled with our garden over the last 2-3 years, due to the changing climate. We started seeds, planted watered faithfully and got nearly no vegetables from them. 2-3 tomatoes per plant was very disappointing. Our summer smoke from Canadian fires really hurt our garden as well. As far as the jackery, show numerous times that you use it,in short clips, as well as a longer introductory video. Many people here in the states use them to supplement their utility costs, and they use them for the times when power is out. Keep doing videos, do some shorter one, and then do your chatting ones as well. Don't worry about the filming quality while money is tight, we are still coming to see you.😊

I watched your video to the end. I ageee with you about the food challenge. You process more meat, vegetables and fruit than any of these utubers. Plus you make cakes, desserts and bread products on a daily basis. This is your life and you do it to last six weeks.
They do it for a month for views and get subscribers.
I think you do it to survive.
Bad luck about your garden but the ongoing heat is a killer.
You sound more cheerful today than last time. Loved hearing about australian trials. Cheerio

Won't lie. I had a good chuckle at the term "talking head video". My garden isn't vegetable but I have a few family members who work at a garden centre and they said even the really great gardeners from overseas are struggling with their gardens being a write off this year so you're not alone. The weather is definitely an issue. Try not to be so hard on yourself. Gardening is tough when things are optimal!
I can't even grow a tomato plant at the best of times, although for some stupid reason I try every...single...year 😫🙄😂

Your freezer organisation is awesome. I have a big freezer too, but finding what's in there is a nightmare! I understand what you're going through completely! You need to give yourself a break! Heat is such a drain on aspirations! I have backed off mass growing of fruit and vegetables until I can ensure that I can keep them alive. I'm just planting tougher plants that are easier to grow, eg silverbeet, rhubarb, spinach, potatoes, chives etc. Once our watering systems are set up, it will be easier to water and keep our plants alive. Also have you planted red and black currants? They are easy to grow and are delicious! Maybe you could get one of your kids to help with the computer work! I find kids are sometimes able to do so much more on the computer, and quicker than I ever could! Don't knock yourself, your lovely just the way you are! Your an inspiration because you are real!

    • @OurSmallFootprint
      @OurSmallFootprint  9 месяцев назад +1

I definitely want to try currants! it is on my list, I'd love some berry bushes, it would be awesome and I've heard they're pretty hardy!
I agree re planting simple for the moment, especially until we get that irrigation sorted, but I'm going to need to top up all the beds to try and counteract that mushroom compost I'd say. :S
I definitely want to get the kids in and helping, at the moment its not real feasible, mainly because I don't have processes down pat to show them, if that makes sense. But eventually it is definitely on the cards, especially if they decide they want to stick it out out here rather than moving away, they will need the internet and things like that to contribute and also buy anything that I deem unnecessary lol :D

Oh sweet momma we are our hardest critics. You are doing great. There's always room for improvement, that's what keeps life interesting isn't it? I truly enjoy your content and hope you get back in your groove and feel good about all you have accomplished bc it is a major accomplishment. For garden do you have a service there that you can send soil/water tests to? It's to give you a profile of soil and what is needed nutrients wise

Somewhere in the rapid movements in the garden I saw a few tomato plant with brown floppy growth tips, which, if it's not sun scald, could easily be blight - also reinforced by the number of brown leaves. General lack of vigour signifies weak plants to being with or problems with root development after planting in the beds. I would be pulling out sick plants to inspect roots - size, length, thickness, density, color, etc.
The yellow fringe on the pumpkin leaves is also similar symptom, environmental or nutrient shock (nitrogen usually). I think we've talked before but downscaling the garden could be the best possible solution in your context. Too much stuff happening around, focus shifts and energy flows elsewhere. The garden, I feel, is very much an extension of ourselves.

I love your squirrel videos. Don't be so hard on yourself. I had to pull my zucchini this week as they went off covered in mould, all male flowers, the odd female that just rotted once pollinated. I think I got 6 altogether out of 4 plants, and my pumkins never took off at all. But we do have yellow beans, lettuce, herbs, and strawberries with a few boysenberries, blueberries, and raspberries. The birds are beating me to the fruit even when netted. So, I feel your pain. Just keep going it can only get better. ❤

I like your squirrelling. Your organization of the freezer looked great. Life of grid is not too predictable so you gotta do what you Gotta do, and it is what it is. I really enjoyed your video. It’s good to see you. You needed a break, glad you took it. I feel bad that your climate and, all the wildlife messed up your garden success.❤ p.s. I still have your Christmas card here. I procrastinate too. 😮

These pantry challenges have flies on them! lol. I have seen that those taking past have done a big shop beforehsnd for 2 months. What is the point then. Don’t stress yourself on getting all done timely. Nice to be able to do so, but hard to maintain realistically. Glad the Jackery turned up. I agree with you re garden situation as same here. Weather I am sure is the issue. We had over 30 one day then the next with tropical rain all day. Yes, they said we are having a tropical event in Vic. Floods happening everywhere, though we are ok apart from water travelling through our garage and yes things got wet. So if we aren’t burning the veggies we are drowning them.

🤣😂🤣💥 "We have a vacuum cleaner, but it sucks"
    Nyssa, you crack me up!
Hope you had a fabulous Christmas and New Year. Just post what you are comfortable doing, don't stress about it, if someone else gets their nickers in a knot, then they have their own deep seated issues within themselves. So long as you and Darryl and each of the kids are ok, THAT'S what's important. I enjoy your posts when they're out but I haven't been getting much in the last few months of notifications. I look out for them. I am on acreage and lost a lot since flooding pushed the big and little furry things to the old house and shedding. Take a breath with the garden. You will have to be careful that the ra#$ in the garden, underground nests and tunnels. I found I have had to take a break from my beloved gardens because of similar reasons. I have to completely cut off their food supply for a while so they will move away or the cats and dogs and natives get them. I cannot and will not bait due to all the other animals. Cats, work dogs, many native animals and birds - wrens, finches, robins, honey eaters, a big family of magpies, tawny frog mouths, several species of owls, hawks, kites, falcons and wedge tailed eagles. Lots of different lizards and small (1m) to massive (2+m) goannas, I won't go there on snakes, lets just say we have far more Eastern Brown Snakes than the normal quota for several places..... I wish they'd get the big smarty cagey ones, but think they're too big. These were ongoing issues before I bought here, found out later, too late.
It's 42°c here today and I'm carting water for geese, sheep (the last of them go into the freezer in a fortnight) and the last of the cattle. I'm moving in 2 mths , selling up and going to another property. Pre-requisite this time, away from heavy cropping heavy chemical using commercial grain farmers. That's why I'm inundated with the native animals and birds, because they treat this place as a refuge from all that. There's at least half a dozen different species of native bees and many different types of commercial honey bees. I saw 20+ kangaroos in the paddocks yesterday. Not a lot of water in the remaining dam left. I've got to go and cart some extra water now so the geese have got their ponds fresh and cool before it gets any hotter today. No, I don't have airconditioning, I have one small fan. My ute is not air-conditioned either, unless you count winding the windows down to get some hot breeze. Sorry about the rant, I didn't mean to write a book!
Wishing you and D and the kids all the best, from down South, Sthn NSW.

Lol, I totally realised when I was editing what I said there, doh!
We have discovered a bunch of nests/tunnels around the poultry pens! I haven't seen any homes in the garden space, but they are definitely eating the fruits! I think I'm going to work on an aviary mesh cloche design over winter.... then I can just throw insect net over that for the relevant crops as well!

I love your longer, chatty vlogs. When my children were small in the 80's, we just called it eating the freezer down. Usually I found that we ate really well, apart from fresh fruit. The fruit was only good to make iceblocks which the kids loved. The challenge was in restocking the freezer, quite expensive. Our garden is a bit sad too, the only thing that took off is the cuccumbers.

Aw, you’re not incompetent - far from it, I’m sure there are a great many people who would live to be half as practical as you are. Gardens are just hit-and-miss, it’s nature and you cannot dictate to it, it will do what it wants to do no matter what you put into it - the more so when you want to do it naturally, rather than using all that crap used by the big farming concerns to force it. Even they get bitten back eventually…just tell yourself that next year will be better cuz we all know you’ll keep on keeping on, that’s how you are, and it will pay off in the long run, you’ll see.

All vacuum cleaners suck. Sorry, just had to say it.
My husband just bought a Bluetti, to use for his Bi Pap machine in the caravan, this will mean we won’t have to go into a caravan park for the power.
With the wicking beds, I found in mine, that it took a while until the root system is developed enough to work. So I had to water for some time until it kicked in. Yes, I have had another dismal year in my garden, so many plants have died, and my veges didn’t succeed either.
You are definitely not alone in the problems with your garden, so many in the same situation.

Hehe, when I was watching it back before uploading I realised that was bad phrasing! :D. I should have put a note in there... 'or doesn't....'
I definitely had to learn to water from teh top for quite a while with some plants failing because of it, and it seems some plants are more likely to seek water than others too, lots of experimenting this year, but I still hoped for a little more success!

Oh myyyyyyy goodness girl I left a comment before the end.. you are SOOOOOO incredibly HARD on yourself.... PLEASE remember your favorite saying PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION... and I hear you telling yourself to enjoy the small bits you are getting.. it's more than the last garden produced....
if there's any tasks you can delegate to the kids.. I know the kids have tasks they do to contribute as ALL family units should have in my opinion but maybe there's some small tasks that you could delegate so that you can have a bit more time to do the things you need to do.. or possibly attempting some kinda block scheduling time for yourself and the tasks per importance.. idk just trying to think of some sort of solution.. but as you mentioned working in an unorganized space takes its toll on you ..I believe you are on the right track though... in getting the desk area organized maybe the kitchen redo can take priority...
