I’m not Korean, but I do know about this. This was a real program to search for dispersed families across South Korea who were separated with each other during the war. It was supposed to be a just a special, but because it was a hit and people wanted to find their long lost relatives, people flocked and it brought so many families together. Think of this movie as Forrest Gump and it shows a lot of Korean events and histories.
