    Imo, The CDTV is as much as console as the Amiga CD32. Where the CD32 is a consolized Amiga 1200, the CDTV is a consolized Amiga 500.

      To be fair, it’s a pig of a system to own as you need to have any system you buy properly serviced, recapped, the power line fixed to avoid shorting and melting the board, the boards stabilised above the disc tray, AND the modules recapped to avoid their self destruction - and that’s before any laser errors or other faults.

    I wonder why Sony didn't make a TV with PS2 built in when Sony Trinitrons were relevant, since I think it would have made more sense to make a Sony Trinitron with a built in PS2. Unless Sony was using a backwards compatible PS3 for the Sony Bravia, or you could jailbreak it to play PS2 games.

    • @Turnarcades
      @Turnarcades Месяц назад

      The notion of integrated consoles in TVs had long passed by the arrival of the PS2, and TVs had long begun the transition to widescreens and in particular, flat panel screens by then. The spiralling cost of console hardware wouldn’t make integration practically affordable, and the only reason the PS2 TV came about and designed like this rather than integrated into the rear with a motorised disc eject to make it wall mountable, was they were simply clearing excess stocks of the last revision slim motherboards at the very end of the console’s lifespan in 2010/11.

    So many rare stuff out there! This was cool to watch! Being a Portable Gamer, really enjoyed seeing the Gizmodo in a Sealed Box! Crazy!
    Also which blew my mind was the Phantom System. i always thought the iQue was the only Nintendo game they had to change for China.
    Did not know they did so for the NES before the iQue! The Phantom System would be a cool top down NES system to own. Such an oddity.

    • @Turnarcades
      @Turnarcades Месяц назад +1

      The iQue Player was jointly developed by a Chinese inventor and Nintendo and then manufactured there to get around strict gaming system and import control. The iQue branding was then subsequently used on the Chinese version of the GBA SP and DS shortly afterwards, for similar reasons, as handheld gaming didn’t have the same tight restrictions as actual consoles. I do also have a boxed Gizmondo (not the sealed one in this video) but I rarely put handhelds out at events.

    • @Turnarcades
      @Turnarcades Месяц назад +1

      The Phantom is quite a story because Nintendo quietly approved of it as it allowed them to sell games to people of those regions who owned one and imported them from the U.S., without actually needing to sort out the complicated manufacture in those regions laws demanded. They later commissioned Gradiente to manufacture the SNES in those regions and even the official NES, though that sold poorly due to the clone’s dominance.

    • @Turnarcades
      @Turnarcades Месяц назад

      The Infinium Phantom got that reputation because of its ironic name, but a couple of prototypes did actually surface; a couple of beefy early protos (none seen working) and one of the later slimmed down redesigns surfaced at a repair shop, where it was discovered to be little more than a typical x86 PC inside with many mismatched components and a literal Coke can box being used as a ghetto heat shield. It didn’t actually work but I believe the repair shop cobbled some kind of working XP setup together inside it and then ran a copy of the scarcely pictured front end system on it for show.

    TV's with built-in game consoles sound like a good idea on paper until one of the two components fails, either the TV screen itself or the game console and its cartridge reader or disc drive.
    My living room Roku TV just suffered a failed backlight so while I could turn it on and probably navigate through the Roku menu, the picture is not visible so the whole thing became useless. The funny thing is that my much older HDTV that I'm using in my bedroom still works even though I hardly ever turn it off.

    • @Turnarcades
      @Turnarcades Месяц назад

      They’re a great idea IF it costs less than the separate devices and they are serviceable.the older integrated systems like the CRT based ones are far more robust with more reliable console hardware because they use less moving parts. But yes, in practice they often ended up costing more than the separate devices, were made hard to service and that’s why they never sold well. As collector items though…. They’re all commanding crazy money now.

    When it comes to the Marty, that significant failure rate is probably why it has a laser replacement device called the Doc Brown (akin to the Phobos and Rhea for the Saturn?) despite its niche nature.

      There was actually a small range of VCD players that have this feature, and one other Shinco model DVD player too. What wasn’t mentioned is these systems has separate video outputs, so you you can load a game into memory from disc and display it on one output, then swap it out with a video disc you can watch on a second output screen, which is how we set it up at the event.

See I remanber being asked about it and I give in easy form. The Dreamcast's game disk has bootloader that will strat-up Windows CE if the game using that option.

      The red Wii dev kit there is the pre-disc drive version. The Wiimote is wired, not wireless, and it stores 8 games on an internal hard drive you can manually select. The NDEV kit there is the later version that supports wireless controllers, and actually belonged to Archer MacLean

    • @AdamKoralik
      @AdamKoralik  Месяц назад +3

      Yeah they made that for the Sega Ages PS2 collection in Japan. Lots of Saturn games that were brought to the PS2. Having a Saturn controller for them was considered a way to push the series.

  • @samuelrocha8652
    @samuelrocha8652 Месяц назад

    NOPE! the phantom system was not lixensed they tried to make it licensed by reverse engineering the system and showing it to Nintendo, but Nintendo said NUH UH! later Gradiente and Estrela (two companies, one of eletronics another of toys) united themselves to make another company called playtronic and they got license to represent Nintendo here in Brazil, they released the super Nintendo and afterwards they released the licensed NES as you know in north America...

      Yes and the home kiosk service ended in 2018. I had to source one through a Chinese friend that had the memory filled with full games instead of the time-expired demos. There is ongoing work to fully crack the software and allow easy code injection onto them by end users. It’s working in theory but still difficult for average folks to do.
