This is a discussion topic video about the fifth generation of videogame consoles. This will be part "six point five" of my seven part mini-series. Here we will discuss the Apple (Bandai) Pippin, the eighth entry in to the fifth generation of game consoles.
THE CONTROLLER LOOKS LIKE THE ORIGINAL PS3 PROTOTYPE CONTROLLER REMEMBER?
+herohunter81 That's what I was thinking too lol
"the prototype of the ps3 looks like the apple pippin controller"
not thebother way around
+herohunter81 There was actually a PS1 controller shaped like that.
+Son of Tiamat (formerly known as tiakpark) I have one of those
GlaciatorGaming Is it good?
The CPU was comparable to a PS1 but without a dedicated 3D engine, this thing was dead on arrival.
I remember seeing one of these on display at the Boston MacWorld convention. It had an external keyboard attached, and the keyboard had a key marked "retrun".
I remember reading about Jobs' return to Apple in 1997. He was probably one of the only CEO's who could actually get an entire company to willingly resign. He went through the Apple product line like a razor. Roughly 70% of the company's product line was done away with completely. It was hilarious when the other company executives tried to explain the Mac lineup to him. He couldn't understand the differences between all the different machines. He finally got fed up and went to a whiteboard and drew four squares, specifying that the company would focus on four products which were desktops and laptops, each with a consumer model and a pro model. Within a few minutes, he figured out something that took the company and several CEO's years to figure out.
That short intro you have is so relaxing
+Edmundo studios Usually it's considered annoying, much appreciated!
+N. Pike Did you end up finding any you liked?
+N. Pike I just talk off the cuff largely.
+N. Pike Have fun doing fish stuff!
+AdamKoralik
You said something about changing the Keep Dreaming part of the intro a year ago.
What ever happened to doing that?
Goddd, that thing was really released?!?! I remember hearing or reading about this thing coming out, but I didn't know it actually came out. Nice job on getting one. Awesome
Fun little mini fact Jobs and another persin made Breakout well the guy programmed it while Jobs did the art for it and they did it within a very short time frame
Growing up I knew a kid that had one of these, but he never let me play it, as though he was embarrassed by it or something. Watching this...yeah, maybe he had a good reason.
The Real "unicorn" of game consoles would be the black, european version, though. Not the american. The black version from europe was never sold to the public and only shipped a few hundred before steve jobs killed it. There is an apple museum in europe now and even they dont own the black version (yet), because its so crazy rare and expensive.
I love learning the history behind these strange consoles. As always thanks for the great and entertaining content.
+techninefan90 Thanks for watching!
+AdamKoralik Will you still be doing a live stream on youtube in a couple weeks or so?
+techninefan90 Hoping to.
+AdamKoralik That would be awesome :D
"What defines a console of being good" I think is an awesome subject!
It would be very interesting to see you show the great aspects of different consoles.
Hopefully it'll highlight the beauty and greatness of all types of consoles regardless of their success or failures.
How did you stand the controller up are you a wizard?
Its a foam like material for tradeshows; it just sticks in between the grooves
@@jmike2039 That's super cool actually, thanks.
Theres another really cool Pippin game out there called Super Marathon. It was developed by Bungie and is considered the precursor to Halo. Only console it was released on was the Pippin. (For... some reason?)
Look up "Aleph One." You can absolutely play this game today.
Marathon was a game series developed for and released on the Macintosh, and Aleph One is an open source port of the Marathon engine that can run all three games.
Basically, Super Marathon was just the first two Macintosh games, not even a port, because the Pippin was just a Macintosh.
I'm really glad you made a video for this, out of all the weird rare consoles I think this one interests me the most because I grew up in a Mac household until about 2005. I had (and still have) the "pizzabox" style PowerMac 6100 that came out in 91 or 92 I think. It's really interesting they went with a desktop style point and click interface, and that it does seem like the system has a significant amount of "weight" to it, whether that's in its gameplay benefit that certainly isn't obvious. If you can find the ROM for Marathon, which I saw a couple other people mention, definitely burn that and try it out. I played the Mac version of Marathon and it is quite fun, it's most comparable to Doom, and even if the controls suck it's still probably one of the better games for the system, as I know it was good on the Mac. Apple went out of the way to port it to the Pippin, as it was known as one of the desirable exclusives on Macintosh for the time. Thanks again for the video!
Steve Jobs was only ever a spokesman for the Apple machine, Steve Woznack was the true creator of the Apple Machine.
*****
Supposedly Steve sunk so much money into his Macintosh project so he could get a higher role of importance in the company.
A salesman is just important as the creator. There’s no point in building something if no one will buy it
@@MalarkeyMan he is what saved apple after all.
I think it's funny how much Steve Jobs avoided games later in his career when he and Steve Wozniak programmed such an iconic game as Atari's Breakout. Great video Adam.
+Alhedgehog Thanks!
Hey Adam! I love your console generation recaps! I have learned a lot from you. I have read a lot of video game history but you really bring the history to life and talk about things I have not read/heard anywhere else. Keep up the good work!
Steve Jobs was an Atari employee before he and Woz started apple, he's the reason Woz created Breakout for Atari. Jobs was fired from Apple in 85 or 86, he went on to found NeXT(weird capitalization was popular back then).
That music CD menu looks like a less-cool version of the Sega Saturn music CD menu.
I met Jason Frank at Comic Con a few years ago. It was real honor. You can tell he loves doing that kind of stuff.
Love these generation recaps, always interesting videos Adam. Good Stuff!
Thanks!
Apple Pippin: Mythological
Sega Dreamcast: Legendary
Dreamcast has nothin to even do with this
I appreciate obscure consoles, but the Dreamcast wipes it's cheeks with this thing.
Thank you, Adam, for all these videogame generation recaps.
A video on the subject of what makes a console a console is sure to be an awesome discussion. It's similar to the argument for the IAU's planet definition. I'd love to see it. Great video as always, Adam.
+VGnerd Thanks for watching!
Nice vid. Interesting how it's all come full circle for Apple and gaming. They made iOS and now they are one of the most dominant videogame platform holders out there...
They should have ported slam city with Scotty "pippen" to the Apple Pippin..🤣🤣
Adam, just thought you should know this game is on PC as well, I had it as a kid. I'm glad you showed footage since I've been trying to figure out which one it was for a long time. I'm willing to bet the PC version has better controls than the pippin port.
i mentioned this console on my stream and my friend was shocked apple even made a system had to send him this video 💯🔥 !
This is why I watch your videos: they're just awesome.
+Snake Plissken Thanks!
Hey Adam, love your videos! I learn a lot about consoles, and see consoles I've never even heard of! Keep up the good work, Adam.
Thanks!
Woo! Thanks for adding this one Adam. I love your console recap videos! :)
+PMSJordan Thanks for watching!
AdamKoralik I'm star stuck! You've never replied to me before. :D
+PMSJordan
I don’t think Adam has pants on when recording these videos
Adam, you totally need to try and play Marathon on it. As you might already know Marathon is kind of like a proto Halo. Bungie made that before they made the Halo games, and it is actually a really good game. Interested to hear how well the controller is for a FPS game lol.
BFKAnthony817 im almost 100% I had that game on my family computer when I was in elementary school in the later 90s
Hey man, good job on the video, I watched your older videos, and they're really interesting. Good luck for 2016, and you just earned a new subscriber!
Finding all kinds of new things to get. Thanks for the videos. Love the history of tech.
definitely interested in the topic you proposed. I've been keeping up the console based videos for a while now. thanks for the good videos and please keep this channel going
I missed this. I have been super interested in it for a while so Im glad you made this video
+GoldenTriforce Thanks for watching!
"Steve Jobs never had any interest in video games"... The same Steve Jobs that worked for Atari?..
Yep, if you delve more into that, he really worked there pretty much against his will.
Jared Connell When Steve jobs worked at atari, He was already friends with the Woz. Woz, despite not being an employee, Help jobs create Breakout.
Maybe Breakout was Steve Job's trying to tell other people how he felt while working there. Like he wanted to Breakout.
Yep in Wozniak's book, he mentions Steve taking the job making breakout, only for a paycheck, then he proceeded to rip off woz on the payout.
definitely interested in the topic you proposed. thanks for the good videos and please keep this channel going
+DB N Thanks for watching!
hey Adam I think too much about setting up my own RUclips channel but what is fun is sharing all the weekly video game shows on Facebook. love your kick ass show and will try to remember to share your show every episode. burn more games for pipin or just for viewers to send them to you I suppose.
definitely interested in the topic you proposed. watched a Fair amount of your content and have come to enjoy the stuff that's posted. I favor the console based videos though haven't had a bad reaction for time I've been watching. thanks for the good videos and please keep this channel going
Awesome video! Love the retrospective series a lot! Also, I got my Dreamcast to work again. Recalibrated the laser a bit and works like a charm! Thanks for your help!
+ECGxDrifter Happy to help!
I really love this series, and this video too! Would you be willing to do a series on handheld consoles?
The NA version was also released by Bandai with the moniker "Pippin @World". Katz Media released the European version as the "Katz Media Player". No models were manufactured nor termed the 'Apple Pippin' as a console. Let me know if you need any additional information (www.videogameconsolelibrary.com/pg90-pippin.htm). Thanks for the effort in touching upon this rare bird.
+ Adam Koralik Thank you again for another great video , I hope you and Mrs Claus had a great Christmas !!!
+nuketowncity Thanks!
21:06 i love how they try to put a question mark on the gold ranger but we can clear as day see who it is what’s back there a giraffe
Katz Media also made a Pippin model named the kmp-2000 which is extremely rare
The Pippin is part of gaming history. But thanks to videos like this it will not be forgotten.
+John D. Ha, thanks.
Wow! You have a Pippin. Congrats Man.
+Ponchozworld Thanks!
The first console to use the PowerPC architecture, beating the Gamecube by 5 years or so. It's interesting that PowerPC got so popular in the console industry that all 3 major players used it in the 7th generation.
the system was similar to Saturn and PlayStation but was held back by the Apple OS. It Basically runs a modified version of Mac OS. It did have a first person shooter called Marathon developed by Bungie. Now isn't that a mind fuck? A first person shooter developed for an Apple console before Halo. Fuck me that's weird
***** Halo was originally an RTS and was planned for Apple OS and Windows but it became an FPS later in it's development and Microsoft needed software for the Xbox and basically made Bungie make it an exclusive for Xbox
+Eshaq Jamdar halo that we know today was originally being developed exclusively for Mac before Microsoft bought Bungie before halo was finished. then Microsoft made it a xbox title then PC and eventually came back to Mac.
+Eshaq Jamdar Yep, it began as a Mac exclusive RTS, then switched to being a third person shooter. Then became a first person shooter around or sometime before Microsoft bought Bungie and development switched to the original Xbox.
madmax2069 Actually it was 5 minutes after The showing of Halo at MacWorld that Microsoft bought Bungie which really wasnt surprising cause The Marathon Trilogy was very popular on Windows and MAC
Animated Freak You mean Super marathon(Marathon 1 & 2
Hey Adam. I haven't commented in a while, but this intrigued me. I'm from Europe (Scotland in fact), and I've NEVER heard of this system. I was probably in my mid to late teens at this age, and owned a PlayStation and N64, but this one totally went over my head. Thanks for covering this curiosity. I'm going to have to read up on this thing now!
Steve Jobs actually left Apple in 1985, and he left voluntarily, although the company had by then removed him as CEO and given him some token title that I don't recall.
Fun fact: the ONLY game released for the Pippin in Europe was a French-language medical resource for urinary problems
+AdamKoralik when it was new, I already was a "pro gamer" and read up to 7 video game magazines/month. Not one of them could talk about it at it's launch, because Apple never though about sending the editorial offices of said magazines a sample of the console. Their only chance to talk about it was during some expo reports. Also there wasn't one store who had this thing, so it's no wonder that no one bought it.
Woah. I can't believe you got your hands on this! I was a previous Apple fan. But I've since made the switch to Samsung and Microsoft ..
My left ear enjoyed that Power Rangers Zeo gameplay.
Correction: Steve Jobs wasnt fired he left cuz the board sided with John Scully he was faily young and the board believed he was too young to be a CEO
I like the look of the controller, bit different
+whiteshadow59 Reminds me of the old PS3 boomerang controller that never came to be, maybe for the best lol.
I'm Australian, I like boomerangs :P
Oh snap lol, maybe it would have been awesome, we'll never know
there was a 3rd party boomerang controller for the PS1, maybe the reason SONY didn't make an official one was due to the the 3rd party one possibly due to a patent issue.
Hmm that's interesting, could very well be! It would have been nice since the PS3 controller was starting to feel small but it's fixed on the PS4 lol. The older I got the smaller they seem.
I have a love hate relationship with my pippin. I love owning one but i really hate it.
The Pippin has been on my list for a long time. I see it quite often on eBay for around $500, but could never bring myself to pay that much for it. That's the same reason I can't get the APF Imagination Machine...I need a cheaper hobby.
Thanks Adam, the Pippin always intrigued me, but since I'm living on the wrong side of the Atlantic I'll probably never see one in person.Would have loved to be a fly on the wall though when Steve Jobs first found out about this ting after returning to Apple in '97...he probably ripped the team responsible for the Pippin a new one :-)
Great video! I would get a Japanese Pippin on eBay, if I could find some games, like Super Marathon, for it.
Very cool! I always enjoy seeing those ultra rare consoles. Thanks for sharing footage.
One request though if I may. Only because I've seen you do this in several videos but instead of saying something is "expensive", could you give us the cost? Or, if you don't want to reveal how much you paid for something, a rough cost?
It's practically a small form factor Mac with an edited version of Mac OS 7 (or correctly said System 7, they didn't call it Mac OS until 8). It was also meant as a budget small computer for simple software and thin client use (shortly said, a thin client connects to a server, which has an operating system on it which you control with the thin client, so you don't need much hardware, the server does it), but it could do games as well. It's comparable to Power Macintoshes of that time. Also, it's much like the Philips CD-i as in not being games first, but software first, games as an additional feature.
LOVE YOUR SHIRT! Great video, as always. I remember reading about this back in the day, but I don't remember ever seeing one.
+Master-Cast TV Thanks!
Do you remember how much that store was asking? Did it exceed the original asking price?
Definitely do a video about what makes a video game console
+Sensei Jr. Noted sir.
Awesome that you made a whole video about it
+ilcool90 Hope you liked it!
Yes, please go in depth about game library vs hardware power.
As XBONE and PS4, let alone PC are more powerful as the WiiU it is certainly my favorite console this generation because of the awesome library.
Another interesting thing too look at in the experience of a platform is the controller/interface. Look at the difference between Wii controller, traditional controllers, and Mouse/ Keyboard.
Another amazing video but where is the video of the unboxing of the Apple pipin?
+bestintheworld8803 ruclips.net/video/FCgI_4qmBLI/видео.html
+AdamKoralik thanks
If the right trigger is A it sort of makes sense, it's mapped to your index finger like the (left) mouse button on most computers, plus it has a dedicated finger for "confirm", rather than having to share the thumb.
i heard from a good source that a pallet of pippins were in a warehouse for fifteen years in the customs facility in portsmouth uk, they went back to apple in the states to be liquidated, so there are some pal units over there somewhere.
Just saw that we can now downlaod the Pippin roms with the bootloader, We may now get Pippin eumaltion and homebrews. But just like Dreamcast homebrews I don't it going very far; the resaon is of coruse it's hard to test your demos on real hardware without CD-R disks.
Adam, I loved your Console Retrospective. Is there any chance of you doing a series were you select one game from each console from each generation and give the story behind them? Mario and Sonic alone would give you enough scope. Goldeneye, Megaman etc.
Thanks for a great video on an obsure ite. The console itself was basically about the same speed as a Powermac 6200, it contained a PowerPC at 66 Mhz which should have been plenty...but it only had about 8MB of ram that was shared with he video and likely a shitty 1 speed CD Rom . If they had boosted the Ram, and had better video the system would have performed better than the first Playstation.... but I don't think it did. The game you showed could have been much better too. And the price was beyond affordability.. Oh well. Maybe Apple should have let Bandai handle more of the development. I heard about this system 15 years ago and this is the first I've seen it in action.... I must say, I was underwhelmed. But thanks for posting this excellent video.
The "confirmation" button being the right trigger is not at all odd when you think about who made this. It is essentially your mouse clicking finger transmuted onto a gaming controller....
Always was intrigues by the pippin and always think about getting one Thanks for the video.
I'm actually familiar with Mac computers from around that era, and there's one thing I can tell you about this console: Power wise, it *SHOULD* have blown the PS1 away. It should have even been a fierce competitor for the N64. In fact, it should have been comparable to an N64, but with a CD drive. There's two reasons why it wasn't, and I'll give you both of them:
The first is that it, as far as I'm aware, was limited to the stock graphical capabilities that a Mac with no video card could handle. Which isn't bad, but isn't amazing. Now, the interesting thing about this, is that the 603e CPU inside it in theory *could* have done some pretty damn impressive stuff with 2D and 3D quickdraw, in much the same way that the Sega Genesis lacked much of the graphical hardware that the SNES had, but companies like Treasure managed to get everything and then some out of it anyway.
The reason I bring up the Genesis is that it, too, had a CPU in it that was typically used in Macs. Mac computers in the 80s and 90s liked their beefy CPUs, and consoles using the same CPUs were pretty capable. The problem is, the Pippin actually did run an entire stripped down version of the Mac OS under the hood! Versions of 7.5 to be exact, and if the net's to be trusted people have gotten OSes as new as 8.0 to run on it. So you had an OS with a little bit of trimming but otherwise designed for computer systems clogging up the machine, eating RAM and CPU cycles.
So to summarize, you'll never get any real performance from the Pippin unless you write your own super slimmed down OS for it, or install a PCI upgrade card. Apple really goofed on this thing. It's not a computer, but they wanted to treat it like one.
3do has an OS , CD-I also . They should have installed a powerVR graphics card.
@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt
I've learned certain things about Mac computers of the era that makes this post somewhat obsolete.
Macs in this era were still pulling a ton of their system software from the ROM, AKA some of the "Macintosh Toolbox" was actually stored in the hardware, meaning it didn't take RAM and didn't need to be loaded or unloaded. In fact, the system software stored in ROM was accessed just like RAM.
If the Pippin worked like any other Macintosh, what this means is that most of the system's problems were probably down to the lack of support chips, notably for graphics. Which of course they couldn't fix, as the machine was already priced $400 higher than the competition.
This was, by the way, a problem that plagued Apple in the 80s and 90s: They insisted in having the CPU do all the work in all their hardware designs. They would put powerful CPUs in their machines with no co-processors, graphics or otherwise.
This was fine with expandable PCs, but it's why their lower end offerings were often seen as underwhelming, including the Pippin.
PowerPC of the time was advertised as half the die area than intel at the same power. They could do floating point (I think) and thus did not need a co-processor. 32x does 3d without special chips (but streamlined access to the framebuffer) and people seem to love Doom resurrection. There were plenty of games on PC. I guess, people just bought a real Mac instead of this thing.@@YourIdeologyIsDelusional
I actually played a Gundam game once at a local game store I worked at in 99/00. It was a strategy/space shooter game. Super weird, probably should have bought it and the system looking back lol
i like the detailed zoom shots like the on the controler vary awesome way
According to the Wiki page about 100,000 units were manufactured but only 42,000 were actually sold. Hilariously, more accessories (controllers, keyboards, modems, floppy drives, etc) were manufactured than there were consoles.
+Michael Wolfe Reminds me of Atari over producing ET and Pac-Man.
AdamKoralik Yeah, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read it. Hope you had a good Christmas. :)
Adam!!!! No way!!! You finally got a hold of one for your video!!!!!!!!! The pippin!!!
I love our long talk we had about it! It was so funny!
+T00muchF00D Yep, neat isn't it?
+AdamKoralik it is! I want to play this piece of crap so bad!
I think that they chose to make that shoulder button the confirmation button in order to make it more similar to a computer mouse where you use your right index finger to click. Also, is the controller port the same as the Saturn?
The ball mouse in the center of the pippin controller reminds me of a primative version of the dualshock 4's center touch pad.
@AdamKoralik Yep. It's funny you mentioned that because I happened to be looking up the Bandai-Namco brand, which at a time of course both corporations used to be separate. Point and case I happened to find out that at wikipedia they play large role to this computer/console at least overseas anyway.
While I do commend Apple for trying something different, it was Steve Jobs who didn't want this out.
Sorry Adam, I live like 10 miles away from Chicago and I own an Apple Pippin :) I know you probably don't give a crap about that, but I'm happy since it took SO long for me to get one for a half way descent price! lol
Came to comment the same, I bought an @World in 06 and have lived roughly an hour away from Chi the whole time. You have any actual games for yours or burned games like most of the rest of us? One thing I do have that literally no one else has.... a developer disc for an unreleased Pippin game(eventually released on PC/Mac), Terror TRAX. I also have dev discs for the Home Depot program, Mr Potato Head and Racing Days. Don't have a developer dongle to bypass security tho and they're unsigned.
Beautiful looking console.
I always enjoy watching your videos! I also live in Chicago. (NW Suburbs)
+dr3wd4wg Represent!
A video on what makes a good console would be interesting.
On another note... I wonder how Super Marathon is on that system.
Due to how popular the ps1 and n64 by the time this pippin came out it would probably been a good idea for Apple to just forget about getting into gaming
Id say yes, id like to see a series about what makes a console good or bad, if nothing else for the extra content.
No wonder that I know this machine as "Bandai Pippin" and not "Apple Pippin" if it was sold in Japan with Bandai brand and video games magazines in my country always talked about it as Bandai's console, not an Apple's console. I remember this big article about this and maybe in somewhere there they mentioned Apple's contribution to this, but I was too young to be interested to read that whole thing (I wish I could find that magazine and all of my old video games magazines for that matter), I just read the titles and captions.
Thanks for the interesting video. Like yourself I remember hearing about this back in the day and thinking it was nonsense. Then I saw an advert at the back of a magazine for importing it from Japan ( I live in the UK so that was weird at first ).
This made me think how disheartening it must be to make a product like this and see it go nowhere!!!
+chrisrobinson82 Thanks for watching!
Feel free to throw the NEO GEO CD in the 4th generation recap if you feel like doing it. Better late than never and good video like always.
+Mr. 6's&7's Would if I had it.
Here is some info that might help you realize why this thing could connect to the Internet and had VGA. Apple said that there were two ways to go with video games and the Internet. Choice One was make a console-like computer. Choice Two was to make a computer-like console. They took Choice Two.
I live in Japan like your friend and I see Pippins sometimes too. They are definitely reasonable and I'm sure I'll pick one up eventually.
Adam you have become my wikipedia.
Very interesting! I just discovered your channel and watched your video because I'm the proud owner of not one but two Pippins. So I would just add that it comes bundled with a modem and that, in Japan, it was released in white and black (the reason why I have two of them. Also, in Europe, it was only sold to hospitals and places like that. It was never released commercially. It was also only available in black and distributed by Katz Media ans as you said, western models are just so hard to find. Finally from a hardware perspective, the console is based on a PowerPC which was the same that the 1995-ish MACs. Great video and I'm sad for you for that shitty Power Rangers game available on the console. Keep up the good work :)
There are a couple websites online that you can find that have the ISO files for the Pippin. I agree that I don't like or agree with burned games but since I have never seen an actual game for sale I've been forced to do it with my Pippin.
I was also amazed at the weight of it, I can't think of any other console that weighs quite as much as the Pippin for the size.
+ConsoleGeek Yeah that's true, it's a heavy fucker.
I remember looking at one of these things at KB Toys in a mall when I was very little
