Really enjoy hearing your perspective, Wayne. I lived in Thailand in the 90s, stayed in CM a couple of months in 2022. The realities of living there vs. holiday have to be considered. You’ve definitely gotten more comfortable with vlogging since you started…keep it up!
The age thing is just starting to weigh on me and I wonder how many good years I have as I seem to be slowing down just a bit. Hate that I can't do some of the more strenuous hikes I like and can't run 10k with my wife. I like that you seem to be working on sorting your own life out instead of relying on a woman to fix you like so many guys. I didn't settle down until I was in my 40s and had already lived inThailand for 20 years. Just go at your own pace and don't listen too much to the guys who give advice. By the way, I turn 70 this year and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up.
Good luck. I turned 70 last week, moved to Chiang Mai 2 years ago after my wife died. I never had a plan. It was just what I wanted to do and where I want to be.
Wise words as always mate. I get a lot more aches and pains nowadays, but still life in ol' dog yet. I'll hope I can make it to 70, long way to go yet. 🤣
It's not easy taking on some else's kids and investing time and money into them, your happy were you are if it's right for you, then that's it. Remember if you want that retirement visa you need 800,000 Thb baht about , £18,000 in your bank to apply for it, do what makes you happy Watne, I also work in a crappie factory, and will stay and save 3 more years before coming over to Thailand permanently, I'm bailing out early just can't wait for my pension in 5 years time.
Love these kind of "ramblings". Always good to hear people their stories living in Thailand. Myself im 39 and living part time in Thailand. Still have to work a couple of months every year in my home country. The goal is to go Full time Thailand before i turn 45 and get me a couple of rental property's to keep myself busy while living in Thailand.
Age hits all of us...but happiness and wisdom makes you feel better about it. I turned 55 whilst living in Chiang Mai for that year. But by that point I had the wisdom to know what to do to make the best of the next few years so that I have a solid pension. The dream became real to me after spending that year in Thailand. I headed back home in Feb 2020 (as the pandemic was hitting), secured fantastic work-from-home employment (best of my life), and now it's enjoying the minutes until I can book that flight in a few years. I am using every resource to improve my health, both physical/mental/financial and happy doing it. See ya in 2029...permanently!
That's right Beverly, I'm happy to have some wisdom and life experience, that's worth it's weight in gold. 2029 will soon come, I'm sure I'll still be here 🤣
I love your channel because you give such a honest opinion on thailand for me looking at retirement in thailand its so informative chiang mai is where I want to be too a lot cooler than other areas 🎉
You're right Wayne. You back home and you get a quick reality check about just how good Thailand is. Both returned to Melbourne for 10 & 6 days, as soon as you get off that plane, you can't wait to go back to Thailand
" Life is what happens to you when your busy making other plans " .John Lennon. Just keep doing what makes you happy Wayne , there are a lot of people who watch your vlogs who will never have that 😢.
Wow - lots of guys my age on here (I’m 71) that sound exactly like me!! Happy as a clam without schedules or plans - I can honestly say I am happier now at 71 than I have ever been in my life, and living here in Chiang Mai has a LOT to do with this.
I had a moment of doubt after my last trip about moving to Thailand in the near future and thought about not doing it. As soon as those thoughts started creeping in I became super depressed. That's when I knew for sure that whatever the hurdles may be I must move to Thailand. That's where my heart is and nothing would change that. All doubts are gone now and plans are set. I know without doubt that it's the right choice.
I lived in Chiang Mai for 8 years, loved it until my wife died. Had to come back to the UK, I've tried the Philippines but didn't like it. Back in UK again but the draw of Thailand is getting strong again.
Nice one Shain, that sounded like me when I was coming over. It was the right decision. It's not all rainbows but I can't see myself living back home. Good luck mate.
Your honesty is what, and I think I can say this, WE have come to expect. You say what we all feel, what we all go through. Hate to break it to you, but you are retired - ostensibly you are not really working. You will always have to do something to fill that void, albeit gardening, golf, fishing, etc., for you it’s vlogging. You are surviving admirably so in a foreign country of your doing. Cheers to you Wayne. Hope you find what you are searching for, and long may you continue to vlog as I truly look forward to yours.
Hi Wayne, Due to my own health issues and several of my coworkers dying soon after retiring at 67, I decided that I would retire at 62. I realized that it wasn't going to be financially possible for me to retire at that age in the US. I did a ton of research on affordable retirement destinations, visa options, weather, safety, and access to good medical care. Thailand ended up being on the top of my list and I moved here last year. While it's a long way from the US, I am able to go back a couple of times a year to see family and friends. I feel comfortable here and consider it home.
Hi Phil, great to read your comment. I'm glad it all worked out for you and your enjoying life in Thailand. It's a great place to be. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Great vlog many of us who have been lucky enough to visit Thailand especially China Mai fall in love with the place, being there on holiday vs living I expect is very different, however my aim is to retire there. I was in CM December last year its a place were I feel completely at ease peaceful I hope it doesn’t change much with the ever increasing visitors keep up the good work Wayne
Thanks Simon, I hope you can come back and retire here one day. It's a special city. I'm sure the city will stay the same, but more and more people will be coming. Thanks.
everyone has to go through the same shit before they actually decide to retire...i'm glad i found your vlog, i live in HK and plan on retiring in chiang mai as well. will look forward to meeting you one day and hopefully find concurrent hobbies or interests to establish a friendship, someone to hang with every now and then! take care dude! Danny
always good to think about the whole moving and retiring situation before you commit. Dont want to be caught out 5 years on with absolutely nothing left both in Thailand and back home. Im going to 40 soon and already making that journey on relocating once I get closer to ur current age Wayne. Its a massive life changing event. can never be too careful.. For now though, go grab a green tea and take it easy man, take it easy.
Me too, im 39 and living part time in Thailand since the last 2 years. When i make the move to go full time i want to be financially stable so i dont risk to need to go back and start from scratch again depressed and miserable 😅
Yes mate, it is a big decision to move over here. I kept putting it off for months and months. The day will come for you, when you step on that plane. Take it easy buddy.
Wayne, your videos inspire us! Life abroad isn't always light and fluffy like many RUclipsrs like to portray. Your videos give us a good idea of real life scenarios. Keep up the good work! My wife and I are 52 and we just spent 3 months in Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia before Christmas - we really fell in love with that part of the world! 1 month in Vietnam, 1 month in Chiang Mai, 1 week in Cambodia, then 1 month in Kabi/Phuket and Bangkok. We're already planning to go back for longer in 2025. We're playing with the idea of a longer term stay but grandkids could be coming in a couple years and my mom is in nursing care at the age of 88 - it might be hard to leave home for more than 6 months. Plus I still work full time (self-employed) - my clients are all across N.America and the time zone issue was a little difficult, but manageable. Still, I'd love to stay in Thailand for a much longer time - maybe someday!
Thank you Corey, it was great to read this message. My channel will never be fluffy, I try to document the highs and lows and my real life. Thailand isn't the end of the rainbow but it's a fantastic life. I hope you can come over for a longer sting soon. I really hope your Mom will be ok aswell buddy. I hope the family are well . Thanks Corey.
@@scottgeen3062 Oooohhh chalk and cheese there 😜 those two don't feel as though they're on the same planet, never mind the same country. Hope you choose well 😉😇😂
Im 59 originally from England , moved to Qld Australia But flying to Thailand tomorrow Im going to Chang Mai for 5 days ,a couple of weeks undecided and finishing up in Hau Hin for a week Just a recce to see if i fancy it for longer or for ever or i dont like it at all Im in no rush
When you first get there, of course everything is fresh, discovering new things, few years in it becomes a routine. I think you need to live somewhere else in south east Asia. Maybe try nam for a while. The beauty is that Chiang Mai will always be there.
I think you’ve made a good choice my friend, there will always be those thoughts of the life back home and we all have those what if moments - you have shown us how we can enjoy life & how good your life is 👌 happy days ✔️👋👍🙏
I was surviving in pai nicely on £ 900 a month and that was nice living. I scrimped on my place to stay because I was never in. I rented a Cheep moped and spent the rest on nice food in restaurants. And day trips out seeing things Strangest thing was I hardly spent any money on booze. The hot weather literally stopped me drinking alcohol. I love north Thailand and will be back in June and hope I never leave 👍
I ve been watching your channel for years now. I think you can do live in Thailand as you got a strong mind and a lot of experience. If that makes sense. I live 6 months here and 6 months in Amsterdam for lots of years. I could retire here now but I am not ready for it for many reasons. For you? I think it would be great mate. Take care Wayne. Bless
Wayne , I’m Australian. Married a Thailand woman 19 years ago , we spent 17 years working in Australia, My wife wanted to return to her village and extended family , In rural Sukothai, we built a house, I’m on the Australian aged pension, I’ll probably spend 8 months a year here , the rest in , back in Australia , So far all seems good, I’m the only Farang, with in miles , only two people in the village speak English, So far it’s ok for me Peter Peter Sukhothai
Very similar situation with regard to my UK relationship… I came out permanent last year and not looked back, currently living happy in Jomtien, it will all fall into place mate, don’t overthink it, retire as soon as you can, life is short buddy
Hi ya Wayne, I think you answered your question yourself, by saying splitting up the year with some time in the uk, to earn a bit of cash, is a good way to do it, good luck brother 🤝
I think you can do it as a Digital Nomad... If someone has a business online, it could work anywhere. Im working on an idea Wayne, happy to share it with in a couple of years when it's 100 percent!
Sure, it can be done, loads do it buddy. If I had a £ for everyone I've met here, saying they're working on an idea, though. Not saying your idea won't be good though man. I hope it works out for you Paul mate.
A good vlog 🤘 you are correct about your cost of living video. It’s your spending habits, however we all get something out of how and what things cost a month in Thailand. Everyone’s spending is different but we can gauge what it would be like and compare. I never get tired of up to date cost of living vlogs 🤘🤘🇦🇺
Thanks buddy! Yes, I agree that cost of living can give people an idea of what's needed. Cost of living vlogs are so diverse, I think it can make it worse if you watch to many of them. I admit, they are a good watch though. I have a video coming about this subject.
I think the one big problem with retiring in Thailand is what to do about medical care, sure you can get insurance but it gets very expensive once you hit your 70's and 80's. People will say well you can go back to your home country, well what if you arent stable enough to travel?? Unless you are rich enough to self insure...say about 100k USD, which should cover you in a PUBLIC Thai hospital, way more for private, you are pretty much scuppered. An option im looking at is retiring to a country that provides permanent residence like Portugal. With a permanent residence card you get on the 'free' health care system.
Yes Jeff, medical care is a concern. As you mentioned, the care here is top notch, but theirs nothing like that home medical care. I'm hearing good things about Portugal, seems to be a good place to live.
As you mentioned it seems you have to decide whether to live in the West or East. I lived in Thailand for a few years and wanted to stay there for much longer. However, I felt it was difficult to make it there as a farang. I did apply to jobs within Multinational companies I found on the BKK Post. Maybe I just needed more time and sometimes more luck!
I had to wait to retire, but I'm "sorted" as you put it. I have enough emergency fund to cover any outpatient needs, and enough income to get inpatient insurance. Set up with a couple pensions. Retirement here I come!
Oi Oi Wayne, I feel ya man... am 6months away from hitting that retirement visa age but after a few yrs off I now want to go back to work and run my little RUclips channel while based out there.. just gotta work out how to do it with the current visa regs.. but I can't wait to get the F out of UK!! Sound and wise words mate... I feel ya.. I think at our age we certainly start to reflect on the past and consider the future.. gotta follow ones heart!! be seeing ya in Thailand later this yr!! lol
I'm coming back to Thailand again in March I've been 21 times now in nearly 52 I'm I will retire permantly at 55 to Thailand I'm working hard in my country to make that happen maybe I bump into you in chaingmai
You dodged a bullet-i was in a similar situation when I got involved with a single mother here in Australia-she also had 2 young kids from a failed marriage.I ended the relationship after 4.5yrs because of a number of reasons including her becoming lazy & giving up 2 of her 3 part time jobs & relying on my income to pay more of the living expenses.Since then I have completely changed my perception of women in general over the last few years & apart from a couple of casual flings I have largely stayed away from women over here..Now my main focus is building my wealth as much as I can & hopefully retire early & maybe spend 6 months of every year living in thailand 😁
Thanks for sharing 👍. I made the right decision also. Nothing against the woman I was with, but I just wasn't happy and Thailand is what I wanted. Good luck buddy, keep working towards that Thailand dream 🙏
Hi ya Wayne Just found out how send a message . Love your views and was wondering what part of uk you are from . I’m also from the southwest Torquay to be frank. I hear a little when you chat . Take it easy man , take it easy . lol
Hi Wayne, I don't know what will be the retirement age for you since you are quite young, but don't stop making volunteer class 2 contributions which will go towards your UK state pension and they are not that much, Also one can go back 6 years and make the payments. This way you will have income from UK when you reach the retirement age regardless of where you decide to live. I don't think you will get any pension from Thailand
I still pay tax buddy. I have some gaps in my working life but I should scrape through and get a half decent pension. I've done the 5 year payback before also. It was 5 years when I did it in my 30s. Good to know we can backdate 6 years now. Thanks.
I just turned 37 14 days ago I’ve been married 15 years and have 3 wonderful kids one is moved out and he’s killing it in life at 18 part of me wants to go out there for a few months and just enjoy life time on earth is short and I’m miserable in Florida
Sure it is, hundreds of expats retired here at 50 (with everything in order) I hope retirement is good buddy. I got friends in Swansea, I used to go to South Wales a lot 👍. Thanks mate
Yes Wayne good to listen to you in your patch , I would love to come for a longer spell , instead of 3 to4 weeks lots of things to consider need to sell my house get rid of everything in it , at the moment paying the bills while away being 73 and retired 😅
Well articulated bro. I’m a kiwi man. 48. Been with a Thai girl here in Nz for 8 years. She wants to stay in NZ. I want to go and live in Thailand. I’ve had enough of the western BS. 50 retirement visa. That’s us mate.
I think a trip back home is probably in order. I don’t think you’ve been back in the three years since I started following you. Nothing makes you more certain you made the right move quite like reminding yourself firsthand why you left to begin with (or it may help you decide you want to stay at “home”… unlikely). My plan is to stay in Thailand 6 months out of the year and in the States for 6 months. Whenever doubt creeps in, I just take a look around me or watch the local news. That usually puts me back on track and actually makes me consider living in Thailand for 9 months out of the year instead of 6! 😂 Whatever you choose, best of luck to you! You seem to have your head on straight so I know your decision will be for the best.
Thanks Earl, yes a quick pit stop back home could be in order soon. Then again, the thought of landing at Heathrow makes me feel sick 🤣. I'll be on an adventure somewhere in the coming months buddy. Sounds like you have a good plan Earl. Thanks.
Its interesting the age thing, it seems like one minute you are leaving school they next minute thinking about retirement. Great Vlog as always mate - big respect to your honesty.
Speaking of a crappy factory job, this Thursday marks the one year anniversary of walking out of mine for the last time, did it for 28.5 years and always knew it was a means to an end. As an American you won't move to Thailand in your 40's, you can't afford to, you have to work or you starve, the exceptions are the young guys who got messed up (physically or mentally) in Iraq or Afghanistan and get the government vheck every month.
That was the best day ever when I left that factory job. I hated it in the new town I was living. Yes, I agree, some people can't come here at a young age.
Ageing is natural, and we have to accept it. I am not too keen to accept an entire baggage when it comes to a relationship. It's better to have your own family. Just a thought.
I wouldn't say theres anything wrong with being with someone who already has kids, I take my hat off to men who do. I just wanted this life. I made the correct decision. Thanks
You never know..when not looking for love...it can find you😂...who knows..one day you might meet another vlogger/tourist...and it hits you💘..you are still young and handsome with little gray beard😅..so you never know..life can take another turn again😉
Thailand seems like a nice place to retire but just like any other retirement one would still need a semi-passive income or large investment portfolio and to be debt free. It's definitely cheaper to retire in Thailand but you probably need a house or much larger apartment than you are currently living in and most likely need expat friends. One can't really go 30+ years of being able to relate to others and fluently communicate to totally depriving yourself of that. I would imagine one of the reasons people start YT channels when being an expat is to just be able to speak/communicate "normally".
It's easy these days to communicate in the mains cities I think, but I agree it does matter to know some of the lingo. Yes, maybe RUclips is release to have a good old chat, like back home. Thanks.
@@WalkAboutWayne I spent only 6 months in Argentina and upon coming back it was a breath of fresh air being able to fluently converse. Sure some people in Argentina spoke a little English but it was always "am I talking too fast" or "what's the Spanish word for what I am trying to convey". I think it makes a world of difference for mental health to both have expat friends and to be more fluent in the destinations language for long term living plans. You do you everyone is different, these are just my experiences not suggestions or anything like that.
There is a reason you’re in Thailand now and not in the UK working in a factory, remember what brought you to Thailand. There is a saying “ wherever I go… there I am”. Retirement is a costly endeavour and If you want to cross your T’s and dot your i’s you better squirrel some money away before officially retiring, from what I understand that’s not the easiest thing to do in the UK due to the increased cost of living. There may be some legal ways to subsidize your costs in Thailand such as housesitting, providing online relocation advise to potential expats, or offering guided Motorcycle tours to English tourists to different locations you have been to in Thailand. If you are where you want to be then do what you need to do within legal boundaries, it requires some effort but not as much a working in a factory… Good luck 🤞
The problem with hooking up with a single mother is that you have no influence over them, you're not allowed to discipline them, it's pretty tough to stick with it long term, I'm not surprised it didn't work out. I know it sucks but it was for the better (for you anyway). I arrived in Bangkok last night and will be coming up to Chiang Mai in the next couple of weeks. I'd love to buy you a beer if you ever get a free couple of hours.
Question Wayne if your planning on retireing in the land of smiles on a pension not the 800 000 over 50 the uk pensy but you haven't worked or lived in the Uk for quite a while will that affect or pension or do they say well done lad here it is even though you haven't worked in the uk for 15 to 20 years were im from tjey changed alot witch i like especially for people who migrate to NZ in there 60 s or a little younger but once 65 get a pension just curious .
Hi Joel, it's not been 15 to 20 years mate, a lot less than that. Also, I'm still paying tax in the UK, so nothings really changed buddy. I have got lots of gaps in my working life though, but I should be ok. Thanks.
Hiya buddy, I completely understand and get what you say and mean. I'm doing another visit to Thailand end of this month. When you decide to move to another country it's a huge step, both exciting and scary, if you have some sort of income behind you and you can manage then great, I'm fortunate to have a good pension, and I started up a little online side job, along with a backup if that doesn't work! I was planning my retirement for 5 years, and planning my move to Thailand for 2 years, 1 more year to go, hopefully 😁 I currently live in the UK, but it's got to that point where it doesn't feel like home anymore, that's why I've been planning everything. Great vids by the way, stay strong healthy and positive my friend 👍😁
Always important to have some back up money and a steady income. Luckily, I have something, not much but something. I hope you can make the move over here soon buddy. I cant see me living back in the UK anytime soon. Thanks 👍👍
Wise words but don't rush back mate and when u do make it during summer and coast into winter cos it's miserable here right now.... Nothings getting cheaper either.
Yes mate, it would only be a flying visit. Summer would be the one if I did. I think I'll be heading to somewhere else in Asia though mate. Just the thought of landing at Heathrow makes me feel sick. Cheers buddy.
Personally think money guides your path in Thailand, obviously restricts your ideas also. Living solo can be the correct thing to do considering circumstances.
You could start attending a language school. That would go a long way toward getting things sorted. It’s never too late to start. Commit to one year. Then commit to a second year. And so on. 🙂
Hey Wayne, I think it’s a good decision to stay in Thailand 🇹🇭 Even with all thoughts you have! I would say you will not find a good reason to go back to UK 🇬🇧 because in europe it is becoming more and more difficult or worse to live. I will go to retirement end of 2024 and move to Thailand 🇹🇭 for sure! No better place found up to now! Enjoy your time and take it easy! Look forward to your next video 👍 Regards Udo with Beppa 🐕
I would never want to be back in the UK long term, maybe a flying visit, but even that makes me feel unwell 🤣. I'll be staying in and around SE Asia for sure. Thank you buddy.
Great vlog mate and your thinking re when to come here forever is spot on. I "retired" here at 43 back in 2006 thinking I was set up for life.....wrong....2008 crash hit me hard......this is when I should have returned to the workforce. I didn't, I chose to stay with me wife and our very young children. Bottom line fast forward to 2024, eldest about to complete 2 years of uni and youngest in year 10. Every day is a maths equation....can I afford this, should I buy this, is that necessary......we have got through so far and we live okay but no way extravagant......yeah....should of worked for a few more years, that would have been the sensible thing to do and was even suggested to me by multiple people. Do I regret my choices? Not really because my youngest wouldn't have been born.
Hi buddy, great to read this comment. I hear you mate, but I'm the same as you, I din't regret coming over early. I'm doing ok and sounds like you are too. Good on you mate. Thanks
I'm looking at retiring here but I have to go back to Australia in 2027, because I have to apply for the pension in Australia (stupid rule). I am using an app called TravelSpend to see how much I spend in a month. I think it is a good app. It's been almost a month and I have spent 9000 baht (which includes a 2,400 hospital visit. I got Shingles) So with my rent 14,000 baht I am looking at spending around 23,000 to 24,000 baht (between $980-$1000) a month. Not sure if that is good or not. But I know in Australia, just on rent, I would be paying $500 a week, so definitely better than Australia.
Sounds very close to my budget Paul. There's know good or bad. If it works for you mate, that's all that matters. I've got a vlog coming about how I structure my cost and how I don't use a spending app anymore. 👍
In a nutshell you have to show an income of 65,000 thb per month going into your thai bank account or keep a balance of 800,000 thb based on being over 50 years old for the retirement visa.
i retired at 55 (wife hated it, thinks its her house to rule) , got to keep yourself busy, anything like exercise, hobbies travel etc etc. i don't know where i will end up, the West is turning to Shite real fast. Body wise get to your ideal weight late 30's and stay there if you are festively Plump and lose weight when you get older the skin does NOT bounce back, ie Man boobs, saggy gut skin, droopy arse cheeks etc etc so get fit and stay trim and tight. Gym or resistance bands at home every 2nd day and lots of walking, swimming, bike riding etc. You don't want a Veranda over the tool shed, ( slang for a fat gut)
🤣 Very true mate, I think a lot of expats here could do with reading your comment Steve. "Veranda over the tool shed" never heard that one, but I love it! 🤣 Cheers.
They I understand it, to retire in Thailand the Thai authorities need you to show you could draw £370 a week every week, if you needed to. Can you tell us what the minimum amount of money that you’re allowed to retire on in Thailand. According to Thai law.
Requirements are being 50 years old. You don't need to be officially retired somewhere. Being 50 years old is enough. You need to put 800k Thai baht in a Thai bank account to qualify for the retirement visa OR have proof of a Monthly income of 65k. But the most important things is that people think you need to be officially retired in your home country... Its not needed. You can call that visa also the 50+ long stay visa 😊
That’s £361.50 a week. The UK old age state pension is £221 a week. So, UK men need a private pension or sell their house or sell their UK house to increase their savings. If a UK man sells his UK house he has made it very difficult to return to the UK as an old man if for any reason he needs to return.
Wayne, man, there is this weird intersection between trying to make more money and the inevitable decline of good health. A man has to have enough money to make it to the finish line, but chasing money until you cannot "waffle" is not ideal. Where ever you may roam... keep vlogging, brother.
Dude nothing good is happening in england. There are very little opportunities here. With the inflation and low wages and record high rents it feels like you are a hamster on a wheel getting nowhere. Last time I was in Thailand I literally felt Thailand healing me The only thing that made me come back was covid. I know nothing or no place is perfect but I think you are making the right choice as england is in a right state and Thailand is much more friendly and better run. In Thailand I felt free in england I feel like a slave /hamster on a wheel
I divorced at 36. Im 39 now living my best life with a Thai bird at the moment. Thankful for the past 20 years because i know and experienced what i definitely dont want anymore 😂 Freedom is Everything 🎉
The trouble is with new tax regulations retirement in Thailand is not a good option. I wouldn't mind living there 3 months at the time if I retire but I will need to check properly B4 retiring; as I do not want to be double taxed on my savings... Would be nice to have an episode regarding new tax regulations in Thailand.
If you sell your house and want to bring the money to Thailand it is subject to income tax (I already paid this in UK) just to wire the money to a Thai bank which is ridiculous if this is the case....
Really enjoy hearing your perspective, Wayne. I lived in Thailand in the 90s, stayed in CM a couple of months in 2022. The realities of living there vs. holiday have to be considered. You’ve definitely gotten more comfortable with vlogging since you started…keep it up!
Yes, living and holiday are two totally different things in Thailand. Thank you buddy.

Great thoughts
Live the life that’s best for you
Not what makes others feel better :-)
Ageless Expat! 👋 Your posts/photos on Facebook are very inspiring and thought provoking.
Nice, sounds like a good plan Sven. Thanks man.
2029 will soon come, I'm sure I'll still be here 🤣
You and Mr both babe
I'm moving Thailand permanently 2029 I meant yo say
I love your channel because you give such a honest opinion on thailand for me looking at retirement in thailand its so informative chiang mai is where I want to be too a lot cooler than other areas 🎉
Thank you David 🙏. Chiang Mai is a very special place.
I just stumbled across your channel. Good information here
Thank you! 👍
You're right Wayne. You back home and you get a quick reality check about just how good Thailand is. Both returned to Melbourne for 10 & 6 days, as soon as you get off that plane, you can't wait to go back to Thailand
100% Ricky, I think I would be ready to leave after a few days back home.
" Life is what happens to you when your busy making other plans " .John Lennon. Just keep doing what makes you happy Wayne , there are a lot of people who watch your vlogs who will never have that 😢.
Thank you mate! I like the John Lennon quote 👍
You are a real Gentleman no fake no drama in your channel This is all I have to tell you 👏👏👏
Thank you so much. 🙏🙏
Wow - lots of guys my age on here (I’m 71) that sound exactly like me!! Happy as a clam without schedules or plans - I can honestly say I am happier now at 71 than I have ever been in my life, and living here in Chiang Mai has a LOT to do with this.
Sure, Chiang Mai is Magic, lot's of people just like you on the channel and in the city. Good to hear your happy 😃
You need to find something to keep you busy or everything or every place gets boring after a while
Thank you Steven, yes you are correct in a way. Thanks for the kind words buddy.
Yes, even if your busy, it's still just another place.
Love these random chats Wayne, you’re talking to a lot of friends.
Thanks Sid mate 👍
Went travelling 6 years ago and still miss Thailand so much, would love to go back and do it again :)
Hope you can make it back soon 👍
Totally agreed! understand you well. keep well and take care!
Thanks 👌
I really appreciate your info & honesty
I can say with all humility that your vlog has helped me make that final decision
Be safe
Cheers Craig, I hope the decision is the best one for you.
Good on ya wayne, always good to hear your honest thoughts👍
Thanks mate 👍
Danny
Nice one Dan, hope all is well in Hong Kong. Hope to see you around Chiang Mai one day buddy 👍
always good to think about the whole moving and retiring situation before you commit.
I've been here 19 years now in Hua Hin, I still love Thailand, it's different living here as opposed to coming for a holiday.
I'm missing Hua Hin, I'm hopefully coming back down soon. Very true mate, 2 totally different lifestyles.
@@WalkAboutWaynehi scott here 57age can't wait to retire in Thailand in jomieten or chang mai enjoy your video great from Scott new Zealand
Nice one Scott, Thailand is waiting for you mate 👌👌

Oh wow . My dad is from Crediton. I’ll be in Thailand in September .
Nice, I know Crediton well. Enjoy the Thailand trip.
Im 59 originally from England , moved to Qld Australia
But flying to Thailand tomorrow
Im going to Chang Mai for 5 days ,a couple of weeks undecided and finishing up in Hau Hin for a week
Just a recce to see if i fancy it for longer or for ever or i dont like it at all
Im in no rush
That's great Colin, I hope you will settle on a place that you like. Both are great places. I hope it goes well 🙏
When you first get there, of course everything is fresh, discovering new things, few years in it becomes a routine. I think you need to live somewhere else in south east Asia. Maybe try nam for a while. The beauty is that Chiang Mai will always be there.
Correct, living somewhere is no different from anywhere. Life is good here though. Maybe back to Nam for a while, one of many options.
I think you’ve made a good choice my friend, there will always be those thoughts of the life back home and we all have those what if moments - you have shown us how we can enjoy life & how good your life is 👌 happy days ✔️👋👍🙏
Thanks Ant 🙏
I was surviving in pai nicely on £ 900 a month and that was nice living. I scrimped on my place to stay because I was never in. I rented a Cheep moped and spent the rest on nice food in restaurants. And day trips out seeing things Strangest thing was I hardly spent any money on booze. The hot weather literally stopped me drinking alcohol. I love north Thailand and will be back in June and hope I never leave 👍
Nice! That's around what I spend. I could live really cheap in Pai, just chilling. You'll soon be living the good life again mate. 👍
Wayne, you will retire and be very happy growing older in Thailand, that much I know. We live one life, live it to the fullest.😎
More than likely mate. Thanks 👍
Bless
Thank you buddy! Much appreciated for watching the channel. Sounds like you have a good plan, 6 months in each. Thank you
Wayne , I’m Australian. Married a Thailand woman 19 years ago , we spent 17 years working in Australia,
My wife wanted to return to her village and extended family ,
In rural Sukothai, we built a house, I’m on the Australian aged pension,
I’ll probably spend 8 months a year here , the rest in , back in Australia ,
So far all seems good, I’m the only Farang, with in miles , only two people in the village speak English,
So far it’s ok for me
Peter
Peter Sukhothai
You speak Thai?
Thanks for sharing Peter, I hope it all goes well in Sukothai. I'm sure you'll start to get use to it mate. All the best.
Hi Wayne good video and it was nice to speak today with you. Don’t forget Luang Namtha, Laos. Take care.
It was great to meet you buddy. I will look into Luang Namtha, for sure. Take it easy.
Very similar situation with regard to my UK relationship…
I came out permanent last year and not looked back, currently living happy in Jomtien, it will all fall into place mate, don’t overthink it, retire as soon as you can, life is short buddy
Nice one mate! Yes, best thing I ever did. Hope life is good in Jomtien 👍
Good discussion
Thank you !
Cheers mate 👍
Hi ya Wayne, I think you answered your question yourself, by saying splitting up the year with some time in the uk, to earn a bit of cash, is a good way to do it, good luck brother 🤝
Hi mate, yes that's still the best way to do Thailand I think. Thanks buddy!
Always good to hear your ramblings Wayne! 😅
Thanks mate. I like a good waffle and doing these chat vlogs.
Admire your honesty, Wayne. As men, it's hard to reveal our feelings.you are brave to Take a ch6
Cheers buddy!
Yes, it's not for everyone here, some people find it tougher than others. Maybe it's best if you come over after retirement. Thanks
Why did you feel like you had to "make it"...that's not sabai sabai...
I enjoyed listening to this Wayne - nothing to say really maté except I wish you very well and understand your reasoning
Thank you mate 🙏
Good on ya mate.
Cheers John mate 👍
I had to wait to retire, but I'm "sorted" as you put it. I have enough emergency fund to cover any outpatient needs, and enough income to get inpatient insurance. Set up with a couple pensions. Retirement here I come!
That's great Brian, I know a few guys here that insure themselves with big savings. Sounds like you got a good plan. Enjoy that retirement mate.
I feel ya.. I think at our age we certainly start to reflect on the past and consider the future.. gotta follow ones heart!! be seeing ya in Thailand later this yr!! lol
Reading this feels just like me when I was back home mate. I couldn't wait to get out. Keep that dream alive Mark, you'll do it mate. Cheers man.
I'm coming back to Thailand again in March I've been 21 times now in nearly 52 I'm I will retire permantly at 55 to Thailand I'm working hard in my country to make that happen maybe I bump into you in chaingmai
Nice, good plan. I'm sure I'll see you around Chiang Mai 👍
Thanks for the vlog, enjoy the transparency and honesty. When you say grafting back home... what does that mean? I don't know that terminology
Thanks Scot. Grafting means working, or putting in some hard work and long hours. (Grafting)
Good luck Wayne 😃👍🏼
All good Kashif mate 👍
Hi ya Wayne
Just found out how send a message .
Love your views and was wondering what part of uk you are from .
I’m also from the southwest Torquay to be frank.
I hear a little when you chat .
Take it easy man , take it easy . lol
Hi, nice to hear from you! I'm from the Exeter area, so not to far from you. Take it easy man, take it easy.
Hi, I hope you can come over to Thailand and get a feel for the place. A few months is a great time frame to get a real feel of the country.
Wayne, I’m from south Wales and retired 2 days before my 49th birthday, it is possible.
I hope you can come over for longer soon Stanley. I know it's difficult and life and bills get in the way. Good luck buddy and thanks 🙏
Well articulated bro. I’m a kiwi man. 48. Been with a Thai girl here in Nz for 8 years. She wants to stay in NZ. I want to go and live in Thailand. I’ve had enough of the western BS. 50 retirement visa. That’s us mate.
Nice one buddy, hope you can get back over here in a couple years. I had enough back home 👍
Whatever you choose, best of luck to you! You seem to have your head on straight so I know your decision will be for the best.
2 weeks back "home" is enough for me to realise that Asia is the way to go 😂
Thanks Earl, yes a quick pit stop back home could be in order soon. Then again, the thought of landing at Heathrow makes me feel sick 🤣. I'll be on an adventure somewhere in the coming months buddy. Sounds like you have a good plan Earl. Thanks.
Yes, 2 weeks would be the only wake up call needed haha.
Its interesting the age thing, it seems like one minute you are leaving school they next minute thinking about retirement. Great Vlog as always mate - big respect to your honesty.
Yes! Time flies so fast. Thank you buddy!
Very true mate everyone has different views on how much you need to live there I would not need much I like simple living great vid👌
Cheers Dave, yes it's still a great life here living simple.
Side note make a vlog at home etc love to see that
I'm not sure if I'll be going back home buddy.
Hello Mate I enjoyed your waffle. Cheers Steve
Nice one Steve, thanks mate.
Much respect for sharing this honesty around this part of life...how old are you now?
Thank you! Let's just say, late 40s 👍
Thanks for sharing, brutha. Yup - life is so weird. Can’t get a grasp on it!
Cheers buddy! Nothing is easy, ay mate.
Haha you never know, I might do. Thanks you 👍
Working in a factory in miserable England to being an entrepreneur in vibrant Chiang Mai chatting up beautiful Thai girls everyday. Give me a break😂
Not a bad ol' life, when you put it like that mate 👍
Thank you for the great comment, I enjoyed reading it 👍
U living the dream. Did Phuket for years. Enjoy😅
Yes mate, life is good 👍
How's the medical work out there? I have to take prescription meds 😢
Medical care is really good, but some medication might not be available. I would check before.
Wayne, I see Monopoly have just made a Chiang Mai edition. What a challenge it would be to visit every location on that board!
That would be a good board game! I could own LoI Kroh Road 🤣
Hv a peaceful evening .
Thanks 🙏
The problem with hooking up with a single mother is that you have no influence over them, you're not allowed to discipline them, it's pretty tough to stick with it long term, I'm not surprised it didn't work out. I know it sucks but it was for the better (for you anyway). I arrived in Bangkok last night and will be coming up to Chiang Mai in the next couple of weeks. I'd love to buy you a beer if you ever get a free couple of hours.
Yes mate, I found that difficult with the kids. It was hard. I might be out of town in a couple weeks buddy, I have some plans. 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne I was actually thinking of coming up next Monday
Thanks.
@@WalkAboutWaynecheers for your answer I didn't mean you I'm talking a whole you 15 to 20 years I doubt to been out there when you were 18 😞
best intro and outro in the game LOL .
Touching down / Take it easy man. 😃
Its life and life only - Dylan
👍👍👍
Hiya buddy, I completely understand and get what you say and mean. I'm doing another visit to Thailand end of this month. When you decide to move to another country it's a huge step, both exciting and scary, if you have some sort of income behind you and you can manage then great, I'm fortunate to have a good pension, and I started up a little online side job, along with a backup if that doesn't work! I was planning my retirement for 5 years, and planning my move to Thailand for 2 years, 1 more year to go, hopefully 😁
I currently live in the UK, but it's got to that point where it doesn't feel like home anymore, that's why I've been planning everything.
Solo is the best for me, for sure 👍
You could start attending a language school. That would go a long way toward getting things sorted. It’s never too late to start. Commit to one year. Then commit to a second year. And so on. 🙂
I already do buddy (slowly) Language hase zero effect on my plans.
Hey Wayne,
I think it’s a good decision to stay in Thailand 🇹🇭
Even with all thoughts you have!
Look forward to your next video 👍
Regards Udo with Beppa 🐕
Yep 👍 Even though there's ways around that now 👌
I think you actually would choose Hau hin and chaing Mia Wayne but chaing Mia is your favourite place
I do really like Hua Hin, I'll be down that way again soon.
@@WalkAboutWayne can’t wait Wayne waiting for my op then I be traveling there with my daughters Wayne
i retired at 55 (wife hated it, thinks its her house to rule) , got to keep yourself busy, anything like exercise, hobbies travel etc etc. i don't know where i will end up, the West is turning to Shite real fast.
🤣 Cheers.
You only have to look at uk news for five miniutes to know you made right decesion mate
100% mate. 👍
They I understand it, to retire in Thailand the Thai authorities need you to show you could draw £370 a week every week, if you needed to. Can you tell us what the minimum amount of money that you’re allowed to retire on in Thailand. According to Thai law.
I think by law (cough cough) it's 65,000 Baht a month minimum.
Hello mate, how do you afford to live in Thailand, still in your 40’s? Lotto winner? Do a vlog on it?
I've talked about it on past videos mate. No secret nest egg buddy, just grafting back home and making a few wise moves.
@@WalkAboutWayne I think it’s great that you have made the most of it!
A rich happy man is one who has no bills and no wife!!💥
I like that 👌
คุณรักประเทศไทยไหมครับ แต่อยากบอกว่าผมและคนไทยรักชาวต่างชาติทุกคนที่มาจากตะวันตก พวกเราปฏิบัติกับคุณด้วยความเคารพ
Thanks you! Yes, I love Thailand 🙏
Wayne, man, there is this weird intersection between trying to make more money and the inevitable decline of good health. A man has to have enough money to make it to the finish line, but chasing money until you cannot "waffle" is not ideal. Where ever you may roam... keep vlogging, brother.
Wise words mate. Thank you buddy.
Dude nothing good is happening in england. There are very little opportunities here. With the inflation and low wages and record high rents it feels like you are a hamster on a wheel getting nowhere. Last time I was in Thailand I literally felt Thailand healing me
The only thing that made me come back was covid. I know nothing or no place is perfect but I think you are making the right choice as england is in a right state and Thailand is much more friendly and better run. In Thailand I felt free in england I feel like a slave /hamster on a wheel
Just the thought of landing at Heathrow makes me feel sick 🤣
I'm 57 single man what a great life freedom my mates all married and now all divorced haha had to learn the hard way haha
Haha, yes that's like my friends back home too. I guess we lucky man 👍
I divorced at 36. Im 39 now living my best life with a Thai bird at the moment.
Thankful for the past 20 years because i know and experienced what i definitely dont want anymore 😂
Freedom is Everything 🎉
@@WalkAboutWayne yes Wayne b careful with your money enjoy your video thank you from Scott new Zealand
No new news on this yet, so nobody still knows what will happen. I don't think much will be Happening for a while.
When we love thailand and lived in Thailand for some years, honestly Cambodia or Phillipines in not good, the closer in my opinion is Vietnam.
Vietnam is nice 👍
You need to find a sugar mama Wayno, she supplies the lifestyle and you supply the uk passport 😅😅😅
Sounds a good plan mate 🤣🤣
If you sell your house and want to bring the money to Thailand it is subject to income tax (I already paid this in UK) just to wire the money to a Thai bank which is ridiculous if this is the case....
Yes, if that does happen, it won't be good news. Nothing has changed at the minute. We'll have to see how this plays out.
Thanks 👍
@@WalkAboutWayne let's see what happens in the end. I would think the government does not want to lose the influx of retirees
