Was amazed with this new lighting at the O2 in December.....this really added a whole new feel to the concert. Huge well done guys, really loved it.
I work as a cinematographer for the film and TV industry, I saw the peppers with this lighting rig at MSG and it blew my mind. I've seen crazy rigs and designed them before, but whats great about this is its such a simple concept that makes such a huge visual impact. We were all talking about it after the show, and it was very interactive. Its something that doesn't come off well on video, when you're there with it in space, its amazing to see something this large work in 3D. Its not every day humans get to see something this large moving so fast and so colorful. It was truly a treat and made the show a blast. The sound was also the cleanest clearest sound I've ever heard in a large venue, they've got a hell of a visual and audio team.
Great insight into one of the coolest and most innovative lighting rigs I've ever seen! I have seen Scott Holthaus's lighting rigs since some of his first designs back in the 80's and they are always creative and interesting and he is always trying to outdo his last design. What he's done here will be hard to top! I love the remote spot operators! That is a great idea!
Really great work, it's really nice to see the insight from designers point of view. Love this convergence of lighting, technology and music. It's really inspiring and I can't wait to see more!
Scott Holthaus and his wife lived 3 houses down from me for a very long time! Love our extended family
Hey Scott and Ana cheers from and old friend. Been some years since we visited the "crib"
Nice to see Y'all still at it. Killer rig!! Hey to Jim as well.
Superb video. This guy clearly cares about his work and has a lot of pride, as he should. A good stadium show will stand the test of time, it's just a shame that most engineers won't take these kind of risks anymore.
I love this," I have some really great programmers that I love tell me this is really cool we should do this. You do what your smart people tell you to do" . Man this guy is so awesome
Ha.... There's your your guy. Keep it on them! Rock on Scott! Thanks for making my first tour freaking awesome. Melissa '96. Mo
This guy is wicked smart. I'm lost, but that light show was killer.
Saw RHCP last week and the light show was incredible!!!! Loved this behind the scenes video!
2:06 "It's just 2D but it looks 3D because we have width and depth and height"
Umm, that's pretty much the definition of 3D.
I think what he meant was that there isn't a 3D array of those objects, it is in a 2D array on the top which provides the width and depth and of that 2D array height is done by the winches. This means it is 3D in a sense but it has limitations, like could you have two objects on-top of each other? This means it is not fully 3D, just 2D simulated to provide the illusion of 3D.
Angry Encore the man who said that is my uncle. 😂 he can be confusing at times LOL
This dude contradicts everything he says.
I worked with these guys on a Incubus tour. Solid men.
Micah Buzan
Woah I clicked to check out your channel and it is pretty legit! Subbed
Me too!
I operated one of the Robo? Spots in St. Paul, it was a lot easier & safer than a truss spot!
Scott Holthaus calls a top notch show! Nice design!
Best Light folks in the Biz!!!!
Loving that lock screen
Scott is awesome. I'd pay to follow him around for a show.
I like the old world ld in the new world lighting . Great video.
This is soooo effing cool. Like or not.... None of this would even be a thing, if KISS had never existed. Amazing stuff.
So great thanks for sharing!
They are realy plaing Autobahn from the german band Kraftwerk??
love it
Hey Scott great video. It's John from the old Showlights and All Access days.
Hey John!! Nice to hear from you.. Funny..I didn't post this but it is fun to see all the gnarly remarks from the trolls.
I would like to see their shows... but i probably wont....
Hi Scott, can you tell us more about that Video Wall?
I like his attitude. Use less but the best in a smart way.
awsome dude. i leared a lot from that. Thanks
That was a blast !!!!
very interesting! reminds me of the eurovision stage designs back in 2010 and 2015.
This was sooo sick to see in person.
Stay healthy my friend praying for you
No set list. Props to the band for winging it and the techs supporting them. Peace 🙏
great interview! congrats!
@19:03 he talks about "gremmas"? "grandmas"? "aug2"? "og2"? does anyone know what he's talking about here? @scottHolthaus saw you replied to another comment, can you weigh in?
GrandMA is a line of lighting consoles, its pronounced "Grand-EM-AY", but he is mispronouncing it here. the "Og2" you are hearing is actually "WholeHog 2". shortened to "Hog 2", another lighting console.
Gotta say those remote spots are bad ass.
Does anyone know about the OLED Video Screens hes talking about? never seen those transperant AND magnetic in these large scales....!
Yeah they're just video panels. I've only worked professionally for a year but most video walls are made out of panels like this. Magnetic connection with some that lock in. You chain your data and power to them. They have spaces between the leds that make it transparent which is beneficial for a few reasons.
Can someone tell me what they do with equipment that they fabricated for the tour like the kinetic box? I would imagine it’s rented so just goes back to the staging co, but if something rare and they own it wondering what they would do with it when tour is over?
Awesome stuff.
The LED grid is really awesome, but sadly the viewing angle isn't that great. It looks cool from all angles, but the pixel mapping effects is best viewed when you're sitting somewhere in front of the band, which isn't the case for most seats in an arena show.
I sat in horse shit seats and thought it was the coolest lighting I have ever seen. I can't imagine the awesomeness of the sweet spot you speak of.
I was to the left of the band high up in an arena seat and I found the lights incredibility annoying. They kept getting in the way and blocking my view.
What is the song at around 8:00? Anybody who knows?
Guns of Brixton by The Clash.
Great design but they need to realise that the majority of fans are there for the music. Set list, performance, crowd interaction etc matters more! AC/DCs engineer Cosmo has the best idea 'make the band look great'
Love Cosmo!
Good tip about using side spots instead of front
I was at the Manchester show.
very cool
Ist das die König Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen?
The way he pushed down that beye.....
i like how he talks about no flashing lights as there are flashing lights behind him lmao
Love it
is really cool
Niice Sache 👌👌
At 16:37 he's talking about a what??? An iMag?
Yes
TAIT engineering, I'll bet.

Stepper motors and cables! Why not just use individually adressable RGB LEDs on strips? The strips would be as ThiCk as the cables used here and you can have multiple leds on Per strip at once instead of just one Lamp in the end? The reason why Mercedes did IT with motors, is thaT IT was for a Brightly lit showroom. Here where the cieling is dark and you only see the lights, so the Magic of the lamps moving just becomes pixels and could be emulated with strips.
15:21 Your “go to”......? You need a translator to help you communicate homez.
These guys are so fuckin baked. hahaha
those things win the last 30 years best light design award. so beautiful it's wasted for RHCP
I want his job.
The sculpture is great but... Saw them twice on the tour, one with the sculpture and one without. And the sculpure was a bit distracting and random to me. I wish the peppers would do a plain rock tour with just a big screen and few lights, focusing on the music and not the theatre like the guy said in the end. They are no lady gaga. But then of course these kinds of cool lighting guys would be unemployed.
Why would anyone design a lighting rig that requires the audience to crane their necks to see it and taking their gaze away from the stage ?
2016 war das noch der heiße scheiss
Ye know, Ye know, Ye know, Ye know ..........
Hat & sweater making me sweat.
Awesome show, but what kind of drugs are these guys on? They can't seem to explain the simplest of concepts without totally contradicting themselves and then wandering into a different topic.
Most of us lighting guys can at least for a complete sentence.
Trust me, You couldnt hold a candle to Scott or Leif.
Dude, read the last sentence you said. Silly boy
I'm %95 sure he did that intentionally.
r/woooooosh
Btw they surely blaze massive amounts of weed

Lol. Nice catch
Someone is not a fan of follow spot operators lol
Looks amazing. The description by these two guys is totally boring. Clicked off before the 3 minute mark.
Why do Americans always say "you know" after every sentence? Lol
Why do Canadians always say "eh", After every statement?
It’s American culture to keep the conversation going so that’s why there are filler words
He's definitely not a great talker, but then again, geniuses usually aren't.
This cat is a walking contradiction.
I find this type of stage lighting hideous. It's very distracting when watching the band. Maybe this would be good for a light show at Disneyland or something like that. Or maybe an EDM concert.
When a band increases ticket prices to upstage their performance with an expensive fancy light show, they've lost confidence in the power of their own music and ability to perform. RHCP used to deliver high wattage ELECTRICITY on their very own, without relying on any technical gimmicks. They seem to have fallen into the KISS trap. When less bright, add more light.
