This is the most informative and the most amusing video on lighting that I've come across :D I like how everything is in its own category, very systematically put together. The names of the color combos are everything, I love it.
I can't believe how much skill this seems to take. It seems the person running the lights must have a very good memory in order to work a good show, as well as be able to focus and be quick. He also must know the music very well as well. This also seems to be the type of thing that requires a lot of schooling, or at least hours and hours of time of figuring it out on your own...just like a musician. Mad, mad respect.
I like how he picked his colour schemes based off of pop culture he likes or has seen in the world. That’s an interesting take on colour I haven’t really considered before. Bravo sir!
As someone who also fumbled their way through an intelligent theatrical lighting obsession when younger (and subsequently got dissuaded when he couldnt figure out the link between the key framed animations he was building in vixen for Halloween diy show controllers and those super fancy pre programed all the things tables used to control concert lighting.....But then again, Ive always been a more brute force bare metal kind of person so....) I agree with the sentiment that one should find what works for them. However, having a starting point to understand how its thought about by someone in the industry, something to build off of and explore, to then at some point land on a layout that works for them and not just using someone elses layout and fumbling through it, is a total godsend! Absolutely, people, with stuff like this, it is 1000% built how you are comfortable using it. Customize how you see fit. Make it yours But starting from nothing is hard, and its a complicated subject. Old salts, please, share your knowhow. You'd be surprised how little there is to gleam from the outside, stuff yall have forgotten having to learn the hard way. Share it all!
I kinda like your names for things, too. I dig that you don't wanna slum it on the same rig all the time, if you can use the same designs as a starting-point. It's your desk. I'm actually a semi-retired Sound Technician DDL (Don't Do Lights). I like it.
I would silver-tongue everybody, trouble-shoot, save the bar, save the festival and pull money out of my pocket to fill the band's gas-tank, but I got not money, and my body won't let me work anymore.
Thank you for posting this. I've been looking for a video like this for some time. I'm on the audio side of events and want to know more about how the lighting side operates. The video is really useful.
Wonderful Setup and Video! I really love your colour combos and and the psychedelic look. I once used a similar controller layout in M-PC by Martin, but a lot smaller and less complex. It was still great for busking and a lot of fun. How is reliability going with Midi input into MA2?
I am currently using MPC and im making my way over to MA but the midi input is terrible however a external app called bomes midi translator is amazing its similar to MPC tools and I use it and created my workflow from martin in MA loving MA so far the only problem is you gotta pay like $50 for bomes.. well worth it!
I make them by referencing symmetrical positions for the effect. You can also make them by using a negative value for the pan wings like "-2". Tilt still needs to be Positive.
Hey Luke, have you made that midi sync lua plugin available somewhere? I've been working on an integration with TouchOSC on iPad to busk colors / color combos and I've got a hard coded sync going now through midinote commands on the executor buttons but would love a more versatile way of doing this.
7:42 in the video. How did you achieve this technique? Did you program the rotation into each position preset while a gobo was on but clear from the programmer?
It's not a gobo - It's a prism but the concept is the same. "Cleared from the programmer" is close. I just have the flat prism executor running when I program the positions. You can then turn off "Preset Filters" and store prism (or gobo) information into a position preset. In my show file I actually went into Encoder Groupings and made Beam Position/Index a "Position" attribute instead of "Beam" attribute so that it not only shows up next to Pan and Tilt on the encoders, but you also don't need to disable preset filters and the feature is considered a Position feature!
They are all linked to a Rate Master Fader, and all the cues are assigned to that Rate Master. There is a separate Rate master that has a Learn button (tap tempo). I have a simple LUA script that runs when you press the GO button. It runs the script and that copies the Rate from the Tapped Rate Master to the Rate Master that is referenced by all the sequences.
Luke Stratton Designs choice dude. That's neat. Can I ask a question about your positions? I'm sure you said that your up down in out and blind positions define every other effects/special positions size, and all you need to do in a new room is to modify those 5 positions. How do you do that?
Hey Dr. Luke, I have a quick question. Your position fade time, is that a speed master or a rate master? Are they just assigned to your position executors as the speed / rate time group? The reason I'm asking is because I'm having a hard time getting my position executors to use my rate master. They just ignore it and move to the new position at the same rate no matter what I do with my rate master. Any clues?
I use Rate Masters for pretty much everything. You need to give the cue a fade time. I use 8 seconds for everything. That way when the fader is at 50% (1:1) they take 8 seconds but can be slowed to stop or pushed to infinite.
You know you're not allowed to re-package or re-sell MA products/software, especially when under a different brand/product name. I'll go ahead and reach out to MA to let them know about your "product", see if they would be interested.

I've been looking for something like this forever!!! Thank you!!!

Yeah. "Magic Hour" threw me for a loop and the references kept coming.

very nice video!
Great video!
please tell me what is the programming keyboard?? name??
Hi, master! This video is really awesome. Could you tell what kind of beams, spots, and washes do you use in this rig?
8 Robe Pointe, 8 GLP X4s, the house's downstage LED cans.
This video is tight as hell.
Ghost ball! Nice!!
An instant classic!
howd you connect your apc20 as midi on grandma
Do you use showcockpit, or how do you turn on the midi control LEDs? by plugin? feedback?

how did you make the controllers not do the same thing?
Hello Bro, I like your work and I want to sign up for your tutorial, how can I hook up?
Which beam light was used
Would be awesome to get a breakdown of the lights used, which movers are they, cheers
This rig is simple: 8 Robe Pointes, 8 GLP X4s, 1 Base hazer, and the house LED wash lights for downstage light!
awesome
hi, what do you use as dmx interface?
Bit like a live production DJ but not with sound but with light!! : )
I used to be a Dj actually... and I love live production gear.
@@TheLightSideLLC I suspected you were due to this video and the techniques you do in your work. Big respect, you do a great job from what I see!!
How do you do you symetrical effect ?? Mine is alwasys messd up depending on number of lights . I know the basics wit wing etc but howwwww
I make them by referencing symmetrical positions for the effect. You can also make them by using a negative value for the pan wings like "-2". Tilt still needs to be Positive.
Hi luke great video..can u explain how you configured the rotate prism on the rotational knobs on the apc?
I wrote a whole thread about this: www.ma-share.net/forum/read.php?6,32351,32351#msg-32351
can you make it go to etc board
What's your hardware / software setup here? Looks lovely!
grandMA2 onPC with a Samsung Notebook 9 Laptop and three APC20s plus one of our keyboards and our software: thelightside.net/
How many universes you can play out with this?
He's probably using the OnPc nodes, so up to 4069 parameters..

It is available for purchase but your scenario would require customization.

What's the magic behind the go/stop/tap buttons for bringing in a new look?
did u got the ans???is it blind edit ???

Wow.
I'm just curious are these fixtures that you toured with or have you been importing the house rig into your showfile??????
Other than Downstage wash, this is all Dopapod's touring light rig, which we own.
Luke Stratton Designs choice dude.
That's neat.

How the lights turn on MIDI keyboard? I uesd APC MINI
I use a LUA pluggin I wrote and BOME's MIDI Translator
Yes,I use BOME`s too. The Encoder how to achieve?
Can you give me a download address LUA plug it?
It's not free, but let me know if you are interested in purchasing the whole package.
how much for the script to get the encoders ?
how do you get the grandma software when you have a macbook ?
In this video I'm running BootCamp on a MacBookPro. I use a Samsung touch screen PC now though.
what software/program are you using on the monitor and interface for the akai mini?
jartin2004 GrandMA on PC. Interface is just stock standard midi
Where does someone start if they want to get into this line of work?? Im seriously interested in learning!
RUclips is a great place to start. I'd download grandMA2 onPC and just dive in. There are lots of tutorials on the internet.
How does he create that snap fader, "tap it in" fader?
I see below, maybe it is a RateMaster?
Yes it's two rate masters and a LUA script that copies Rate 1 to Rate 2 when you run it.
How to make this circle on avo board....??
No idea...
how long did it take you to map everything?
It has been an on going program of mine. So years?
Ты очень крут! Я хочу у тебя учиться.!
