J.S.Bach - JESU, JOY OF MAN'S DESIRING for organ (BWV 147) [Hauptwerk // Noordbroek]

- Опубликовано: 20 июн 2022
- In this video you can hear my rendition of J.S.Bach’s “Jesu, joy of Man's Desiring” (Jesus bleibet meine Freude) played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Noordbroek, created by Sonus Paradisi.
The Chorale "Jesus, bleibet meine Freude" from the Cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben", BWV 147 was written in Leipzig for the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Written for trumpet, two oboes, bassoon, two violins, viola, basso continuo, and a standard four-part choir of soprano, alto, tenor, and basso, it comprises ten movements. It has been arranged for a lot of instruments providing it to be one of the most popular movements by Bach to this day.
GERMAN (original)
"Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum lass ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht."
ENGLISH (original)
"Jesus will always be my joy,
My heart's comfort and essence,
Jesus is there through all suffering,
He is my life's strength,
The desire and sunshine of my eyes,
My soul's treasure and bliss;
Therefore I will never let Jesus go,
Neither from my heart nor from my face. "

I’ve played this soooo many times for weddings and gotten tired of it. HOWEVER, your rendition refreshed my mind and I would love to play for my own pleasure…. Lovely performance, Philip!
Yes sometimes it's great coming back to a piece with a new perspective. Thanks Eunjoo!
I have been sining Jesus ar min frojd och gladje so many times that I still love to sing it and hear it . I do not get tired of the J.S. Bach Kantate 147 it is so beautiful.
Wie kann man ein so wunderschönes Stück satt haben?
I played this twice in church, (once was a Jazzy rendition), about 10 years ago, now I gotta re-learn it!!! Tough piece...very beautiful and fun to play.
I never get tired of this piece but playing it for weddings at a plethora would definitely make me feel stuck in the same loop of thoughts. Do you have the ability to suggest them songs or go through a medley to perform multiple beautiful songs or do they keep choosing Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring?
This reminds me of my wedding day, one of the best days over 40 years ago. I can relive in my mind today.
How wonderful to hear!! Thanks you!
This was played at our Wedding via a String Quartet
...became our Favorite Song...driving across Town a few years on our Anniversary Day * listening to a Symphonic Station & they began to play...JESU.....made me smile as I lost my Sweetie in 2007..😢

I remember many years ago playing this in my daughter’s school band on my oboe. Trouble was that they played it in in E flat!!! This is a lovely video, except for the very end which is wrong, and the silly comment about secular dirt which is still cleaner than religious inculcation.
As always a delightful JS Bach composition. Thank you very much for playing it!
So grateful to read your comment, Gustavo. Thank you for commenting!

hello Philip, you are a great musician; I really appreciate what you are doing and giving to the world with your music. At this moment, we are all living in a time where everything has been deteriorating: society, the climate, the behavior of people, art, etc; Although all things have deteriorated, it is very pleasant to know that there are people, like you!, who rescue the value of the classics, presenting a better proposal to the world... Congratulations Philip!
Dear Gabriel. It is very strong and very kind words you write. I am very grateful that my modest contribution here on RUclips can have that kind of impact. I wish you and your loved ones the very best. Kind greetings from Denmark!!

The Beach Boys began and ended their 1979 single "Lady Lynda" with an excerpt from 'Jesu'... I was about 12 or 13 at the time and I would always have an ear out for when they played the song on the radio and turn it way up... I thought the song was crap but was absolutely transfixed by the classical parts that bookended the song... thus began my lifelong love for JS 🙂
What a wonderful story to read!!
Beautiful interpretation.

Beautiful rendition, pleasing listening. Thank you for sharing your experience with a Noorlander Avanti. I watched your unboxing video and found it helpful and interesting. Thank you for sharing. Twenty years ago I practiced on an old console connected to an Akai sampler. It's just amazing how much progress has been made. I think I want an Avanti with Hauptwerk and Fatar keys.
I appreciate your kind comment 🙏🏻 Yes, technology has made a huge leap forward since then. I am actually in the proces of making a video where I tell about my experience with my organ so far. Hopefully you'll find value from it when it goes live in a month or 2 ☺️
Very nice ! Thank you !

Takes me back to Loudoun East Parish Church in the 1960's at Newmilns, Ayrshire. Dr Simpson used to play this music, on the church organ, prior to the Minister entering the pulpit, I thought it was beautiful music at that time as well.
Just fantastic what music can make us remember!
Thanks Philip! Please let us know of more performances you will make. It is a joy to hear! Bach is a genius! Handel is also special too!

I am not talented with any instrument, (although I am planning on practicing with an acoustic guitar). My point is, you don't have to be gifted in playing an instrument, of any type to appreciate the tranquility of certain pieces of music such as this.
You played that beautifully, thank you for sharing.
It has also taken my MANY many years to get this far :) Thanks Lee!
@@philipaggesen You are most welcome. 👍
Someone likes his Bach on Noordbroek ;) Nicely played, Philip!
Although this piece always feels the most as a truly vocal piece, because of the 4-part choral. Maybe the most convincing organ arrangement is a pure trio?
Yes, a lot of other arrangements don't have the continuo part integrated. The score also says that that part can be omitted. I just think it gives more color to the piece.
@@philipaggesen relistening to it, I think I like it more in the end. Haha, my taste differs per day. But your playing is of course excellent.
Proper tempo!
Thank you so much David
I'm pleased to hear ann organist play with the BACH's tempo, not so fast as unfortunately too fast.

Bravo maestro! Couple of questions. Where did you get your console from? 2) I couldn’t see and lcd monitors. Are they tucked away somewhere? 3)(cheeky question) all up, what was the cost - everything to get this glorious sound?
Hi Chris. Thanks!! 1) I bought my console from a dutch company called Noorlander and opted for their very compact model called Avanti III. 2) The LCD monitors are built in on each side of the console. 3) The price of the entire console was around 17000€ but that was with a improvements and extra sample sets.
More please.
Stay tuned!!
Request BMV 227 to my eternally loving Carthusians of Sandy Point. The Hundts Ensemble. I recall well. At head of lehr in warmth of the winter kiln and the light in the fog. Next to the shore. Above old harbour gate. They made chartreuse. For Hundt Group. Forever.
what a sublime performance. Congratulations to you and your wonderful ability.
What kind of organ is that? How much would such a unit cost?
Thank you so very much and thank you for taking the time to write such kind words.
The organ is built by a dutch company called Noorlander and it is their Avanti III model. It costs around 13.000€
Well done, maestro. I see you have the European-style flat pedalboard rather than the AGO-style concave pedalboard. IS that a personal preference of yours? I like your registration choices. I usually carry the melody with an oboe stop, but I like your choice too.
I have chosen the european version of the pedalboard because that is what I experience most of the time in Denmark! :)
Lol I am figuratively kicking myself for such a dunce-like question. Denmark - Europe. I think concave pedalboards are more of the norm in the UK, but most of continental Europe uses flat ones. I think the Notre Dame's Cavaille-Coll, after its latest refurbishing just a few years before the fire now uses a concave. But all other Cavaille-Colls use flat ones as originally built.
Anyway, your performance is masterful. Do you have a regular church position?
Thank you Philip! Such a privilege and joy to hear!
Dear Joe. What a wonderful comment to read. So glad you liked it.
Hi, thank you for your amazing playing!! And could I ask where can I get the same music? This version is really nice for organ!
