So this whole time people thought Nietzsche was developing his own philosophy about the world, but he was actually just theorizing about potential Berserk endings.

  • @r.babylon2885
    @r.babylon2885 2 года назад +275

This seems similar to what I theorized a few years back after reading Berserk a bunch. If multiple people are coming up with this basic idea, it seems to me it's got some meat to it.
The Berserk universe does not have a god, heaven, or hell as we think of them. The only god is The Idea Of Evil, which appears as a heart, constantly pumping souls in and out of the afterlife.
When Griffith transforms, he meets The Idea. It explains that it came into existence from humanity’s collective will. Humanity always needs there to be a reason for bad things to happen, but never question why good things happen. Thus, The Idea acts as a god, but being inherently evil, it can only make terrible things occur overall, which is why the world is so horrible.
The Idea tells Griffith he is instrumental to some plan that The Idea has to change everything. Now, this means a lot in connection to Griffith himself. He bears the Crimson Behelit, an object bearing the name “The Egg of the King”. He is consistently held as a great man with numerous followers and limitless charisma. People believe him to be their “Savior”. He leads a group of monstrous people called, “Apostles” as his closest followers.
Now, think about Guts. His vendetta after the eclipse has led him to slaughter countless demons, bathing his sword in their blood. This made the Dragon Slayer sword able to wound God Hand members. He also carries a behelit, which he took from The Count/Slug Apostle. The behelits are supposed to change fate itself to create the future according to The Idea’s plans, and will always find their master. This is the true reason why Guts has survived so long. While he was a close follower of Griffith’s, but has been always viewed by the masses as a horrible person, or as a lesser one.
If you take these things into account, I think it’s quite clear. Griffith is to achieve his greatest heights, instilling hope to the masses. Only then, Guts will finally get his revenge and kill Griffith, by utilizing his behelit as a weapon, which was demonstrated by Skull Knight. To humanity, Guts has killed their savior. But Griffith’s death will martyr him and give the people a new belief. They will create a Heaven and come to believe in “The Idea Of Good”, so to speak.
This means that Griffith is a twisted analogue to Jesus, while Guts will be that world’s version of Judas. It also completes Berserk’s philosophy of grey areas in morality, which begs the question: Can a being of pure malevolence do good?
In the end, all of these horrible occurrences were birthing pains to create a peaceful afterlife for humanity. To create Heaven.

Sacrifices, brutally violent wars, cannibalism and all that stuff. He asked 'what is the reason?'. He dwelled deeper and deeper in the astral world and didnt find anything (or found something that he didnt like). Then he said 'If so, fuck it. Fuck these disgusting humans, fuck this shitty world. There's a dialogue where isidro ask if human stop believing in supernatural stuff, would they just go away? To then shcierke said that there's this things called subconscious that even human can't control.
The idea of evil is even deeper than that, it already exist ever since mankind exist. Dwell within every human. Even if every human become good people, it will still exist subconsciously inside us. Because evil exist within every human, any human can do evil things. That is the idea of evil

Maybe it’s a stretch to say, but I feel like after listening to your theory, Guts is really the antithesis to the world around him. I can’t remember which part of the anime I watched or which page in the manga, but I remember one of Guts’ lines being “Once you die, that’s it. There’s nothing after that” or “When you meet your God, tell him to leave me the hell alone!” to Mozgus. The whole conviction arc was literally watching people die en masse and begging for salvation in unison probably wondering why God would allow something so horrible, while Guts went against the grain and took the evil around him head on instead of waiting on prayers and hope. Also Guts’ character going against the grain in almost every situation. He wasn’t supposed to survive the Eclipse, but by some crazy miracle he did.

18:00 the reason God required sacrifices in the old testament was for atonement of sin, not to give people rewards. That's why Jesus was sent to act as the ultimate sacrifice for the sin of mankind so humans wouldn't have to continually make sacrifices in order to atone (i.e. do 'works' in order to gain forgiveness from God), and Christ's death and resurrection acted as the supreme sacrificial lamb because according to the Bible he was without sin. Before that the only acceptable ways to earn God's forgiveness in the old testament you could not offer a sacrificial lamb every year that was imperfect and it had to be without blemish. There's a whole lot more to it but that's the general idea, just thought I'd fill you in on what was going down back in the day according to the Bible lol

Which also means that if Guts finally comes to either forgive, or overcome his hatred somehow, Griffith will be much weaker. Plus that adds to another theory that I heard which says Griffith can't be hurt by those who hate him. Since Rickert can apparently slap tf out of Griffith (having been told by guts, "You could never really hate Griffith..." or something along those lines. Plus many people have hinted to guts that he HAS to let go of his darkness or he will be consumed by it in the same way that Skull knight was.

My own theory of how things will go with berserk’s ending is based around one of the core features of the series and some variation of it can be found in every arc: the dynamics and moral ambiguity of relationship of all types. Either with relationships of families, war buddies, friends, religion, mentors, rivals/enemies, governments, fundamental powers of the world, etc.
With the core relationship of the series being that holds casca, guts, and Griffith’s fate together. And my beliefs as how things are going to turn out is more based on guts making Griffith learn he has no power over him no matter how hard he plays god rather than an actual fight. Which guts will probably show Griffith that he’s as powerless as he was when he beat him on that snowy hill top ... by fully sacrificing himself for his friends and casca. This doesn’t mean guts gives up struggling or turns into either an zod or skull knight, but left on his own terms to protect those he cherished rather then going berserk.
With Griffith having to acknowledge he lost guts in such an way that it proved he was an better man than him and no way to truly bring him back. You’ll see he never moved past the first time he lost guts, while guts became something he could never dream to be - leading to Griffith fully snapping and losing himself. With his kingdom and fame fading away into irrelevancy and guts memory living on for eternity.

I thought about your theory again and again, and I think I figured it out.
Rickert is able to slap Griffith in the face, right? and he is one of the few people who doesn't see Griffith as a god.
Guts couldn't land a hit on him cause he believes him to be a god, so if he somehow stops seeing Griffith as part of the godhead, God stops existing and dies by his hand. Right now in the story, Griffith is planning to follow the Bakiraka and Rickert, I think its to destroy the only thing able of seeing him for what he is. Rickert.
Maybe it'll backfire and Rickert will be the end of Griffith or Guts and the berserker armor find a way to shut him down.
We also gotta pay attention to Zodd, he seems to have his doubts about Griffith/Femto being the god he is. Maybe if he stops believing him to be the almighty Godhand member, he can cut Femto down as well.

Griffith being God or at least part of the GodHand (and in touch with causality) probably sees the outcome you have theorized and won't allow for it to happen.
Heck, he orchestrated the entire merger of the astral and physical realms through what he already knew SkullKnight would do back at the start of the Fantasia arc.
He practically ensured that conflict was automatic since the astral creatures would inevitably have trouble coexisting with humanity, and vice versa.
And then he positioned himself as the loving savior of humanity by amassing and leading apostles and humans alike.
He can and probably will continue to create a necessity for him to exist as the deity of Falconia, if he is indeed God and desires to continue to exist.
I think, instead of focusing solely on chapter 83, we also have to take take into account the other themes and statements in the entirety of Miura's work.
I'm pertaining to causality being a river, it being a spiral instead of a circle that repeats,
and specifically what it means to Guts being referred to as the sole fish making splashes in the river of causality.

But now that I know that if hell doesn't exist (for me), essentially it doesn't exist, therefore I might just start acting devious and nefarious.
In order to prevent that from happening, I need suffering, as I will seek a way out of suffering. Now that I know that God will stop me from suffering, I will follow everything that God wants me to do, that is, virtuous things.
We are stuck between either a perpetually monotonous existence where we simply follow the flow of causality with no differentiation between whether something is good or bad.
Or, we suffer sometimes, and prosper sometimes, which actually allows us to feel prosperity. If all we feel is happiness, it is not distinguishable so it is not truly happiness.

I don’t have much to add. Just some observation that lead me to concur. I didn’t think of it that way, but what with Griffith being a corrupted version of the archetypal hero, he really couldn’t consolidate his plans for the world with his personal connection with Guts. So, he needed to throw away his humanity for his dream to come true. What was left was a kind of archetypal shadow that acted in accordance with Griffith’s wishes without any moral constraints. In that way, I agree that Femto was a tool for Griffith. I believe that it was through his connection to God that he influenced the events of the conviction arc, and, while merely an avatar for God before, came to fully embody God in the minds of the people. I think Griffith was someone who put his dream above the needs of any one person, including himself. I think he thought that it represented a “greater good”, so his goals were always pretty utilitarian IMO. Problem with utilitarianism is that it can be used to justify atrocities against minorities. Guts is less about some grand goal as much as finding that Nietzschean meaning in the struggle/striving. Guts embraces his own humanity where Griffith discarded his. That’s why Griffith will fall. Because he is now SUBSERVIENT to the whims of humanity. Maybe they both have to die, one way or another.😕

Interesting but a couple of things might simply not work.
For one Griffith needed Gut's son in order to take corporeal form, he did not have the power to simply make himself mortal again, that in itself to me shows his limitations and he is not forced to share this body.
This also means that for Griffith to die, Gut's son must die, which is a brilliant set up on the idea of sacrifice. "Is Guts willing to sacrifice his own son to achieve his goal of killing Griffith?" Very much on theme, almost biblical, to me that is how it will end, with the outcome of that choice.

I love how this theory has poetic themes that the dream for which griffith did every thing up to this point and even sacrificed his found family which he always saw as tools but still the closest thing akin to a family just for a kingdom
and as we know the people are the kingdom so that very own kingdom will lead to his demise is such a beautiful ending fitting for a masterpiece and one of the greatest manga ever told

After watching the entire video I do disagree with your theory, or at least parts of it. The Collective Unconscious of Man always leans on carnal things such as rewards, Christianity specifically is the Antithesis to what Humans want, it promotes self sacrifice and suffering in the name of righteousness. The Idea of Evil is the god of the world (Satan), Lucifer in the Bible is referred to as the Prince of this world. So it is safe to assume Berserk is trying to tell us of the problems that people face when they deem themselves as God. This is exemplified in what the Idea of Evil told Griffith: “Do as you will”, in Christian belief, Satan is not a singular individual but many, *cough*, *cough*, the Godhand, these Demons are supposed to tempt humans into their own carnal delusions. Because of this, I do believe that the God in Berserk is the sum of the Collective Unconscious, as this worlds God is all about the flesh. If anybody disagrees or wants to know more about the logic I use behind this, feel free to respond. I really enjoyed the video, great content

I understand that this maybe isn't about chirtianty but about berserk, but still i feel like i must say that just bc we don't believe in God doesn't mean he is dead or doesn't exist. God is eternal, if you say one plus one doesn't equal two does that mean it's true? But i understand that this was about Berserk.

The rest of the quote for Nietzche is really important, and it's often completely ignored.
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves?"
This isn't a good thing, it's a catastrophe. By annihilating the governing cosmic force, the Arbiter of Good and Evil, there is nothing capable of telling us to do any thing and nothing that can tell us to stop.
That's why his prediction was so accurate, it's basic human nature. With nothing to stop any action, and with the arrogance of the 'enlightenment' came the obvious pitfalls of morality. If there is no God, morality is subjective and therefore malleable by the strong and forced upon the weak. The question of "is this moral" was ignored, because there was nothing left to judge if it was right or wrong, only the individuals deciding it was expedient or useful.

I agree to disagree. Griffith was basically talking to Muira since he created them through his consciousness. Makes sense since they are connected to each other. Who created Miura? Our God Himself. Rabbit hole. God was never dead. I forgot to mention that Muira warned his fans in the manga that he was going to die since he was God in this manga. ☦🤔

    Arveuss,
First time viewer here. Love the video! I'm not usually a fan of anime theory videos, but this was excellently done. You said it yourself, this wasn't going to be like a lot of other theory videos.
Here's my take away: As a former atheist (however you'd like to define that), the question that brought me back to God, and an interesting question in regards to this video generally, is: "Is morality real and objective? Are 'right' and 'wrong' actual distinctions?"
If no, then anything is permissible (see moral relativism). Any horrific act imaginable (including an Eclipse).
If yes, then there must be a transcendental arbiter (a god, If you will) that creates moral rules.
Human beings certainly cannot choose what is right or wrong. We can describe them that way, but we do not decide which is which (this is in direct opposition to the view known as moral relativism).

    Alright, alright

After Fantasia arc there's a flashback which shows Guts in a dungeon, it is revealed Guts to have had a super natural encounter with a flower spirit.

Because of that I don't think you understand the time he grew up in. Leading you to not understand his critique.

I disagree that guts will use it to become an apostle as i feel that goes against the core message of berserk, i feel that gut will kill griffith but not with anger but with necessity, guts hates griffith and is unable to hit him just like skull knight hates the god hand and cannon hit them. I think hatred is what gives them power. The hatred off the ones they betrayed. cause why else would a scarfice of ones loved one be needed to become an aposle because the hatred created from betrayal gives them power. The only time we ever see griffith gets hit is when ricket slaps griffith. Guts talks with ricket before this and tells him that he can never hate griffith, and i think that's what allowed him to be hit.
Just like how the idea of evil is the personification of humanity hatred, an aposle is the prersonification of the sacrifices hatred
So, in the end, i think guts will learn to fully accept what has happened to him and free himself from hate, and will kill griffith without malice

We are ALL in the collective unconscious, and we are all, collectively, God.
In Berserk, specifically, each if those GodHand members went through the exact same process of confronting the Idea of Evil.

I really liked this video and the philosophy incorporated.
I'm not sure if this was your direct implication, but personally I don't think Griffith is the literal incarnation of the Idea of God.
While he brings in some of that Nietzche philosophy pertaining to God, I like much prefer the idea he is simply a person who represents fate (while Guts represents free-will) not an extra-dimensional being.
Predicting the end of Berserk is tough (with something like ASOIAF I understand the broadstrokes pretty well, and know the "what" - with the help of the TV show - just not the how).
Personally, I don't think they should try to go bigger than Emperor Ganishka. He made himself a Lovecraftian God and caused the astral world to merge, you can't really get much bigger.

  • @CouchDoritos

6:11 The reason we ask God for forgiveness when we choose to ignore our conscience is because we are asking ourselves for forgiveness. Whenever we hear our conscience loudly, it is a result of ourselves screaming at us to not take the wrong path. Trust your gut, it knows your fate and destiny better than you do because it has already chosen to ignore itself, died, and is now shouting at you during the life retrospective to avoid the same mistakes it made. But don't worry if you ignore your conscience. For better or worse, you're going to keep respawning from a checkpoint until you get it right. Welcome to Hell. The faster you learn to listen to your conscience, the faster you get to leave this reality.

Berserk is going to end when Disney buys it next year so they can make a Live adaption.
Guts will realize "they" are Pansexual and die after "they" try to fck the Dragonslayer.
Casca? I think it's blatantly obvious that "he" will be trans
Rickert? Ends up being sentenced to life in a Kushan Prison for being a "far right Griffith supporter".
Griffith? Starts the new Jedi Order and is the bestest Jedi ever after it's revealed that "she" was a "birthing person" the entire time.
