Hi Kevin-Albert Williams, i like you’re vids! Change clutch just in street is amazing. Do you know of a VW Golf 1.6 tdi 2011 has a double mass flywheel or a fixed flywheel? Greetz from the Netherlands
Brilliant vid. Do you have to empty the oil before changing clutch and what make of oil did you replace it with?. Thinking of changing gearbox oil in mine
In my opinion and past experience.., I will say yes .., unless it’s a petrol, the. You’ll be fine. Reason for diesel what I have found is the engine torque to gearbox is too great to last the new clutch .., the centre spacers of the DMF always fails ...
Hi Kevin-Albert, After watching your video for the third time(!!) I have a couple of questions; #1,Why do you undo the single nut on the taper spindle of the ball joint to the control arm, rather than removing the two threesquare socket bolts that hold the ball joint to the spindle? #2, It appears that you undo the bolts on the front cross section of the subframe, and the two large washered, rubber mount bolts on the left but not the two on the right; is this correct? Essentially you let the left side of the subframe hang down to gain clearance for pulling the transmission back, yes/no? #3 What grease do you use on the clutch splines? VW gives a service number in their manual that has no connection to grade/specs on this side of the pond. Normally North American clutch kits come with a vial of specific spline grease, but none was included in the LUK kit I received from UK. #4 The VW manual specifies using new bolts on the flywheel and pressure plate. Have you found this necessary or just more VW overkill? Lastly, for now; do you find the 130 hp. diesels suffer less from the strain of the engine torque on the DMF than you have seen on the 174 HP versions? Is there any general driving technique you would offer to help postpone/prevent replacement of these DMF units? I agree that the likelyhood is that they are under-engineered for the power/weight factors of the vehicle - a VW engineering miscalculation. My apologies for the too many questions. No one here has ever seen a T5. Doug (Lonely Cali in BC)
Hey Doug 🍻 1. It’s a lot easier to just pull down the lower suspension arm that way. The method you’ve mentioned will involve a bit more time aligning the two bolts back in place ., which can sometimes cross thread. 2. Yes exactly that ., but there are times when I’ve had to slacken the other side but not remove it fully just for a little bit more drop on the subframe if the gearbox needs coming out fully. 3. I always use red rubber grease. As it doesn’t disintegrate and clump up as some other grease. Which in return causes the clutch to bind with dust over time. Causing clutch drag. 4. Always use new bolts. As they are stretch bolts. If re used there’s always the possibility of it snapping under torque. 5. General advice for prolonging the DMF life ., avoid leaving clutch pedal depressed and in gear ie: when at a standstill at traffic lights or in traffic. Because the pressure plate will be continuously pulling on the top plate of the DMF to allow the clutch to be disengaged. They are designed to be released after straight after gear change. Yes the do suffer less unless it has the stop/start technology then the DMF is a lot more robust.
Just started with my clutch. What would you do with the steering column to a left side steering wheel car. It happens to be just in front of the gearbox and makes it hard to pull the gearbox aside. Thanks!
I have never done a left hand drive version of it. But based on why you mentioned I’d push the engine forward after removing both front and rear mount studs and bolts.
@@WMCS Did the job and it included undoing the steering rack from subframe and from steering column, as well as loosening subframe bolts on the other side a little. Kevin, Mt T5.1 is fitted with a 6 speed box and Concentric slave cylinder can you do it the same method without taking off the subframe. I’ve noticed you have just hinged it down and used it to support the gearbox. Can I do this with my setup. 14 plate 140hp it is.
@@WMCS where are you based? How far do you travel for a job? What sort of money to do a complete clutch on a T5.1 transporter including the. Slave cylinder and dual mass . Post code ST3
I did my gearbox change yesterday and the box is muncher bigger than the one in this video. There’s no way you would lift it off like you did in the video. Neither can you swing it around in the gap between the subframe and underside of the chassis… it’s too deep. I was working in a very small gap between the engine and gearbox once split. That small I couldnt fit my clutch alignment tool on the plate and cover and then fit it in the gap. If I was doing it again I would make a plate for my jack and chock up the gearbox to keep it level when taking it on and off. The subframe would also need to come off totally to give you access into the clutch flywheel . It caught me out really and once I’d started there were no going back. I’ve taken many gearboxes out of many vehicles so no novice but this one wasn’t easy following this video. Do you have a video of you showing you removing a 6 speed gearbox in this way? If so I would love to see it. If you do actually lift it up yourself you should be entering yourself into the Worlds Strongest Man😎

Hi Slim Dog.. is there any vibration in the pedal. When you press it about 1/2 way down.
@@WMCS Hello. No vibration
Hi there great video. I have a transporter t5 2009 automatic 6speed gearbox. I've got no forward gears but do have reverse. Have you any ideas please. Thanks. Keep up the great videos.
Hi Damian. Unfortunately I wouldn’t really know on the DSG gearbox. They have a different system to manual
Wow, how easy did he make that look???
What solvent did you use to clean the clutch bell housing and what was the red stuff you used on the crankshaft?
It’s brake cleaner
@@WMCS thank you.
@@WMCS also what’s the red stuff you use?
What product do you use for wash the transmissions? How name? Tks
It’s brake cleaner ..✨🍻🍻
I think its time for a new milwaukee impact lol have you thought about getting a milwaukee m12 eletric rathcet ? For where you can use it I think you would like it .
I really want one of them ratchet. Saving up for one .., Milwaukee still going strong. Only cosmetic wear and tear 😁😆✨✨
@@WMCS hey your still doing great even without it brother you'll get there . I enjoy watching your work 💪
Collecting my new clutch tomorrow for my 2.0 t5.1. Don’t suppose you remember what size the gearbox drain plug was please? 😂
Recommended a good trolley jack ?
3 tonne sealey pro. Based on the one I have. Been using it solidly for 6 years now.
Is that a yes it can be done the same or not👍
That’s correct. Exactly the same the same. Subscribe and have a look through the channel. There’s specific repairs for all the T5 models.
@@WMCS cheers . Great video by the way. 👍
