I have removed the T5 gearbox 8 times so i know the procedure by heart lol...... If you follow my procedure it will take you approximately 3 hours to remove gearbox and another 3 hours to put back ..... I mean not remove gearbox just place it aside on the subframe while you replace the clutch parts #0 disconnect battery #1 jack up the both sides and remove wheels.... #2 remove hub buts #3 remove either the ball joints or if u have trouble doing that just loosen the control arms #4 loosen top bolt of both Stabiliser links #5 remove CV joints #6 loosen waterbottle of radiator #7 loosen the big rubber pipe under the bottle and put it aside #8 disconnect the gear links by pushing in the clip and remove the whole part from the bracket #9 go underneath and remove the link bracket from the gearbox (13mm bolts) #10 remove the little bolt hold the power steering line and put that pipe over the horizontal stabiliser bar #11 remove the little dust plate (10mm bolt) #12 while your there remove the top gearbox bolts above the little plate (18mm socket) #13 while your also there slide a bit to the front and remove the 16mm gearbox bolt next to the right side CV joint and the 19mm bolt just above that one #14 remove the 2x 13mm bolts holding the front engin mount onto the subframe #15 support the engin oilsump with a jack and put another jack under the gearbox #16 remove starter and the plug connected to the gear selector #15 undo all the subframe bolts (21mm) after putting some bricks or something under the back part of the subframe #16 undo the gearbox mount (16mm) #17 undo the rest of the gearbox bolts underneath #18 slowly lower both jacks that supports the engin and gearbox as far as u can #19 remove gearbox and replace clutch parts ..... ( Use 2 of the gearbox bolts and place it on the teeth of the ring gear to make it easier for loosening the pressure plate bolts and flywheel bolts Now put everything back in reverse order 🥰
Thanks Charles really appreciate that mate 👍 as far as clutches go it was nice to do so hopefully people can save some money and have a go them selves.
Great work Nathan loving the methodical way of sorting round issues on strip down and attention to detail on assembly very informative . keep the vids coming most enjoyable to watch fella 👌
You are undoing too many things unnecessarily. There is another guy on RUclips who does it much quicker. I have followed his video twice now to change my clutch on t5 and it's a really good guide.
i was taught when replace suspension components to torque them up either simulating full load with a jack under the arm or my since go to method get them hand tight wheels on drop it on the floor or drop it on to drive up car ramps then do your final torque to spec . tightening well if that makes sence not sure if thats how you had said sometimes vocal instruction gets lost in translation with me was a pretty brisk clutch swap all in all
Bang on with the labour Don’t forget most of the time it makes sense to replace the flywheel too And a garage will add a bit more on the prices you’ve quoted . As normal for running of the buisness and to cover any warranty
Thank you for the video Nathan. Great job you did there and done in little time - ah ye 👌🏻. Liked the attention to detail too. Have a great weekend mate👍.
nothing worse than a wet clutch but thats another job ticked off the list bearings up next.. im still amazed at this transformation of that van van from a white builders van to a two tone master piece i cant wait to see what andys vans gonna look like when finished
Thanks mate 👍 I could drive the van fine I just couldn’t speed up to aggressively but yep your right another job done 👍. I happy with how the vans turned out appreciate that 🙏
Great job Nath. I had the Sachs upgrade clutch put on mine 5 years ago by the tuners. Cost me £1200. Can't wait to see you hanging off a long bar to do the hub bearings.
Nice work Nath, did my fathers golf mk5 clutch a year ago, im only a diy mechanic done it over 2 evenings and saved him a fortune, these videos you make are so helpful, appreciate it ❤
Great job mate . Thanks for the mention . I am now a tv star 😂😂 do mine next weekend bud so now I have a good idea on how to do it . Hope all is great your end . I will be super pumped when it’s done . ❤
Yeah another good watch, I have a t5 and have just started doing work onit, had a glow plug snap so had the bumper , intercooler, radiator off using my Haynes Manuel had a brilliant guy come from Newcastle to extract the plug, and I live in Doncaster, was very reasonable in price, then I fitted a new inter cooler and bolted back together, live all the t5 content your helping a lot of people out who do t have thousands to splash out on labour for every job going although I’d be nervous as hell resting the engine hydraulic pump, but I can’t see another way to do it, you the man , much appreciated, I’m gunna look to see if you got a video on changing the callipers, pads and disks Take care
I love watching your content Nath, I don’t even have a caddy or transporter, I’m the one that keeps looking for a RUclips creator like yourself that works with a MkII Connect! Anyway all the best my mate and I’m going to be emailing you with a little something. 👍🏻
Hey rob thank you mate really appreciate your kind words 🙏 hopefully you find a channel for the connects 👍 I’ve replied to your email thank you for getting in touch 😊
Is that skip banger with the disc cutter?? Also, have any of the overseas viewers asked you what a “reach around” is yet 😂😂. Tremendous content as always dude. Ah ye 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Hey bud thank you I did think about the hat but I thought as I was on my back most of the time it would have kept falling off so done it without it and banged my head 😆
Hey bud thank you, if you’re a body man I reckon you can do it. I know it’s different trades but you know your way round a motor 👍 take your time and enjoy it, get a strong mate round to help lift the box on and off, you’ll be alright. Comment on a later video and let me know how you got on 👍
and you mentioned you can get a clutch and flywheel for 280 where ? flywheel is more than that on its own. 400 quid and that's not sachs or luk some random make. so like to know where from?
Hi Nath, love your vids and what your doing. How do you find the van drives after removing subframe? Ive been told to get wheel alignment done as i didnt use the kit before taking it off and to renew the subframe bolts. Would you agree or disagree? Keep up the good work 🤙
Hi Adam thank you mate appreciate that 🙏 so it is a good idea to have the tracking done as I didn’t use the tools either but I spent abit of time trying to line it up and the steering is ever so slightly turned to the left. The bolts on the subframe are really large so I don’t think it’s necessary to replace them 👍 hope that helps.
Great video mate, quick question.. does the ASZ engine use the same clutch and flywheel as the T5? Just about to tackle the conversion and picked up an ASZ from a 6 speed Golf and I've got 5 speed box. Thanks 👍
I’m about to drop mine this week, got an oil leak which is causing the clutch to slip. I’m thinking it’s the rear main seal, but will find out once it’s apart…mines a 2.0 so not sure how different it’ll be to yours. Not looking forward to it though loll
Hey bud the job will be almost exactly the same as the bottom half of your engine is the same of mine so will be very similar. Mine was the guide tube on the gearbox but I have had main seals leak and do the same 👍
72 year old man here. Nice vid in OZ question clutch fluid leaking looks like loose line on clutch beside starter motor hard to get at and canot see a nut fitting how do I tighten. Chees from OZ
Hi Nathan, it would be good if you included in a video what tools are required, specialist to vw etc, i own a lit of tools, but im cutting back and only buying new impact only stuff, upto now iv got this list, i only want sockets that will get used. what do you think, 1/4 8,10,13. 3/8 8,10,13,16,17,18,19. 1/2 10,13,16,17,18,19. 1/2 12 point 19mm,27mm,30mm 3/8 torx impact t15,t20 t25,t27,t30,t40,t50,t55. 3.8 hex impact h6,h7,h8,h9,h10,h11,h12,h14,h17,h19. 3/8 spline impact m4,m5,m6,m8,m9,m10,m12,m14,m16,m18. Cheers.
Having ago at doing my clutch on my mk5 gttdi in the next couple weeks , buying a sachs 3 piece kit from darlside for £420 , do you have to drain the gear oil , being my first time I'm just gonna use the whole weekend and take my time , enjoyed the long video though dude 👌💯
Hey bud they are even easier on a golf no subframe in the way so I’m sure you’ll be ok 👍 nope no need to drain the oil just undo the spline bolts on the inner cv joint and the cups stay in the gearbox holding the oil in 👍
Haha I’ve been tidying the workshop so emptied a load of old box’s and those are just rubbish but your right I could zip through loads with the chainsaw 😆
These vans have Dual Mass Flywheel and Self Adjusting Pressure plate...... Best to buy the whole kit with new flywheel to save you trouble of doing the job over and over again..... These clutch parts tend to all fail at the same time..... So dont just replace individual parts ..... After few hundred miles the other parts will also fail then u have to spend more money and another 6 to 8 hours doing the job..... And dont forget to reset the new pressure plate .... My new one was not reset so i had to do it myself.... Only takes about 3 to 5 minutes to reset with basic tools..... If you dont reset the pressure plate you wont get it into gears and gearbox has to come out AGAIN 😢 ...... And be carefull with bolts..... Using powertools will strip the threads and the holes.... Rather hand tight...... If you gonna use the old pressure plate bolts rather not torque it or overtighten.... Those thin Bolts will snap easy if its not new..... And use Loctite to be save
My legs don’t extend long enough to reach the jacking points on my LWB, I could stick the rear leg on the sills and some wood but havnt tested that yet 👍
I have removed the T5 gearbox 8 times so i know the procedure by heart lol...... If you follow my procedure it will take you approximately 3 hours to remove gearbox and another 3 hours to put back ..... I mean not remove gearbox just place it aside on the subframe while you replace the clutch parts
#0 disconnect battery
#1 jack up the both sides and remove wheels....
#2 remove hub buts
#3 remove either the ball joints or if u have trouble doing that just loosen the control arms
#4 loosen top bolt of both Stabiliser links
#5 remove CV joints
#6 loosen waterbottle of radiator
#7 loosen the big rubber pipe under the bottle and put it aside
#8 disconnect the gear links by pushing in the clip and remove the whole part from the bracket
#9 go underneath and remove the link bracket from the gearbox (13mm bolts)
#10 remove the little bolt hold the power steering line and put that pipe over the horizontal stabiliser bar
#11 remove the little dust plate (10mm bolt)
#12 while your there remove the top gearbox bolts above the little plate (18mm socket)
#13 while your also there slide a bit to the front and remove the 16mm gearbox bolt next to the right side CV joint and the 19mm bolt just above that one
#14 remove the 2x 13mm bolts holding the front engin mount onto the subframe
#15 support the engin oilsump with a jack and put another jack under the gearbox
#16 remove starter and the plug connected to the gear selector
#15 undo all the subframe bolts (21mm) after putting some bricks or something under the back part of the subframe
#16 undo the gearbox mount (16mm)
#17 undo the rest of the gearbox bolts underneath
#18 slowly lower both jacks that supports the engin and gearbox as far as u can
#19 remove gearbox and replace clutch parts ..... ( Use 2 of the gearbox bolts and place it on the teeth of the ring gear to make it easier for loosening the pressure plate bolts and flywheel bolts
Now put everything back in reverse order 🥰
Please note.......No need to undo the steering rack !!!!
Well done Nath, you made that look a breeze, I am sure that this vid is going to end up helping loads of T5 owners over time!
Thanks Charles really appreciate that mate 👍 as far as clutches go it was nice to do so hopefully people can save some money and have a go them selves.
I'm just about to start this job, as my gearbox has just failed. So glad that I found your video. I'll let you know how I get on.
Great work Nathan loving the methodical way of sorting round issues on strip down and attention to detail on assembly very informative .
keep the vids coming most enjoyable to watch fella 👌
Doing mine this weekend because my local garage/freind wants £1500 to do dmf and clutch so really useful to know
Nothing like job satisfaction, good job well done,Ah yeah 🤙🏻
You are undoing too many things unnecessarily. There is another guy on RUclips who does it much quicker. I have followed his video twice now to change my clutch on t5 and it's a really good guide.

was a pretty brisk clutch swap all in all
Fab vid mate , last owner of my t5 paid 1400 for full clutch kit and dmf so well done saving a few bucks 👍👌👌👌
Thanks Brian appreciate that mate and yes that does seem the going rate, happy yours has already been done 👍👍
Bang on with the labour
Don’t forget most of the time it makes sense to replace the flywheel too

Hey Ben thank you 👍 if I didn’t know the age of my flywheel I would have definitely changed it. Appreciate the comment mate 🙏
Takk!
Hey Francis thank you mate 🙏 I sincerely appreciate your support ❤️
Thank you for the video Nathan. Great job you did there and done in little time - ah ye 👌🏻. Liked the attention to detail too. Have a great weekend mate👍.

Another first class job Nathan you’ve done a brilliant job on the t5 looks very nice 🤙🤙🤙
Thanks mate really appreciate the kind words 🙏👍👍👍

Thanks Chris and yep it wasn’t to bad at all 👍👍
Good stuff.. look fairly straightforward.
Lovely job Nathan

Hey bud I know I remembered half way through 😆, thanks mate 👍👍
You did an awesome job. However you forgot something very important. The safety hat 😅
Hey bud thank you I did think about the hat but I thought as I was on my back most of the time it would have kept falling off so done it without it and banged my head 😆
Top work again Nathan 😇👍
Thanks Archie mate 🙏👍
Great video mate , Bodyman myself but I’m tempted to do my T5 clutch up the drive 👍👍
Hey bud thank you, if you’re a body man I reckon you can do it. I know it’s different trades but you know your way round a motor 👍 take your time and enjoy it, get a strong mate round to help lift the box on and off, you’ll be alright. Comment on a later video and let me know how you got on 👍

Nathan you got me addicted to caddies! Do you reckon I can covert my 2L Diesel 6 speed manual to a 6 or 7 speed automatic?
Loving the front bumper/spoiler/splitter. Where's it from? (Subscribed to channel too)
Love the real life thing.......Nothing is straight forward! When it should be!
Great video mate, quick question.. does the ASZ engine use the same clutch and flywheel as the T5? Just about to tackle the conversion and picked up an ASZ from a 6 speed Golf and I've got 5 speed box.
Thanks 👍
Very entertaining. Cheers.
Thanks Michael 👍

@@YTDTETV thanks for your reply..seen one guy using a flexible extension socket did you need one? Or did you manage to get to all the bolts without?
Built no bought 🤙
Thanks AK 🙏
I'm going to have to dismantle the gearbox right now, because I'm having trouble shifting into first gear, because of the synchro ring. 😥
Oh man I’ve only ever opens one gearbox and wasn’t to bad hopefully you sort it 👍
72 year old man here. Nice vid in OZ question clutch fluid leaking looks like loose line on clutch beside starter motor hard to get at and canot see a nut fitting how do I tighten. Chees from OZ
The whole time i am thinking Nathan put your hat on
I know 🙈 it falls off my head and being layed down most of the video I thought I’d be ok 😆
Afternoon!
Hey Charles 👍
Done mine on a gravel drive & 18 months later it failed 🤦🏻♂️ luckily I got a replacement on warranty
Oh man that don’t sound fun, hopefully I don’t have to do mine again anytime soon 👍
Hi Nathan, it would be good if you included in a video what tools are required, specialist to vw etc, i own a lit of tools, but im cutting back and only buying new impact only stuff, upto now iv got this list, i only want sockets that will get used. what do you think,

Never an easy job first time
i love irwins sockets for these rounded bolt problems 👌
Yeah I just bought some, yank sizes but they still fit over to extract with a tap of a hammer
Ah yeah
Did you give him a reach around Nath? 😅😅😅
👌😎👍
Thanks Scott mate 🙏👍
Why wouldn't you put a fly wheel in at the same time as the clutch
Then people take them to a garage and they tell you 8hrs labour 😂
should of changed the flywheel at the same time.
so you may have to go through all that again.
