Seems more like he was looking up and to the right, which is reflexive when you have to think of something if you're a left-handed person. His body language doesn't seem to indicate any attempt at deception, so I think he was genuinely thinking back to the moment when he asked the question.
Денис Успешный Actually if it weren't for that therapist James wouldn't have opened up and Lars would be worse. Plus that therapist brought the 3 closer because they agreed he's got to go. So in an Odd way he helped lol.
Денис Успешный I don't think so. In think they learned how to grow up. Can't be an angry teen forever. I like Lars because he has no filter. He tries to be nice but too many people got jokes on him, so he's ready to defend. And he hates it when people question his intelligence. Lars is pretty smart guy. The therapy was to prevent a great Band from breaking up. To you they lost their mojo. If it weren't for that Documentary Metallica wouldn't still be a world wide sensation. Still making albums or even be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I'm actually Impressed with them.
all of these comments regarding the psychologist or whoever the dude is are moronic. The guy was doing his job and his reasoning for asking that question was pretty solid.
On the other token, James has no personality and never says anything insightful, and he was the main person causing problems with guys like Mustaine and Jason. He was so power-hungry, and never apologizes for any of it or acknowledges his fault in making people feel hated. Lars always looks back and acknowledges how bad everything was. I think most people have a very opposite view of things, because Lars really is the better person, as nice as James can make people think he is. Kirk is really just there, mediating everything.
Have you not watched Some Kind of Monster? They literally talk about how they got rid of him because he acted like he was a member of the band. Pretty common knowledge across the board.
Listening to Newstead you get an idea he was the only sane and rational person in the band at that point. Probably worked out the best for him to leave. Yea, he probably could've made shitload of cash but was it worth it staying in this circus.
If you watch A Year In A Half in the Life of Metallica, you'll see that they bullied the hell out of him and it was probably ongoing. I think Newsted has too much dignity to call em out on it publicly but yeah, they were mad he was doing alright with his band Echo Brain
Jason leaving the band was a massive wake up call for Lars, his overprotectiveness of Rob here shows that he was/is trying to be a better person (at least in my opinion)
I'm walking into this blind, but I think I get what Lars is saying. Don't put the new band member in a position to defend himself against an unstated concern because defensiveness doesn't make a creative, cohesive group of guys trying to strengthen their collective mojo. The guy should have just asked him directly: Are you devoted to contributing to that thing we call Metallica or are you going to split your attention and loyalty with another project?
lars didn't like that therapist guy. but when he asked him why he asked rob that question he should have just said because thats why jason is no longer with the band. probably thought that was something that james would like to know.
Considering that the last bass player left because they wouldn't let him have side projects... The way rob was chewing on his food at the end had me rolling lol. I want to see the rest of this footage
Lars did actually offer him the gig, it's in the film. Bob was moaning about how he was to old and to fat, when Lars said "You want the gig? I'll talk to the guys". Bob refused.
Bob was not a metal guy, nor did he want to be in a band anymore. He was in the Payolas and made money in the 80s. But then he became an engineer and eventually producer. The guy works with bigs acts on a yearly basis and makes massive money. Why would he want to go through the hassle and issues of being part of a touring band, let alone THE biggest touring band on the planet, at his age?
Rob has made metallica such a strong unit so glad he joined especially after watching some kind of monster how close my favourite band literally came to breaking up. Fuck it was so close. Highly look forward to seeing the metallica unit and slipknot in auckland in october it is gona kick ass.
He’s a ball of joy in conversation and real fun to watch on stage. When he joined, they got less depressing. Same thing happened to Weezer when they hired Scott Shriner after Pinkerton. If I was hiring a bassist, I’d make sure they aren’t be a reckless alcoholic, and were positive. Lotta good players out there, may as well focus on the band dynamic rather than minor or differences in skill, which may just be explained away by rehearsal time or song familiarity. They made a great choice.
Nolan said something similar when it comes to picking actors to work with. At that paygrade it´s clear (for him at least) that the skill is a given, only thing he needs to know is if he can work with them.
Im getting the impression that Rob is smarter than the rest of the band. Because honestly, at least Lars and James are behaving like little kids, not getting exactly what they want.
+Tim lefa I think that any group of people living in a bubble all of their adult lives like Metallica have, will suffer from immaturity and a lack of real world social skills

I love how Lars gets in the doc's face about his line of questioning, and I wonder how they let him in this meeting by himself if they felt they wanted to meet Rob without supervision from their shrink. Why is he in the meeting in the first place if he's not meant to talk? Lars has been suspicious with him a lot, keeping him on a leash sometimes, and they almost fired him on multiple occasions before calling him back to the rescue. It's crazy how fragile yet combative they actually were at this point, the guy had to be really good to survive in that environment. I would guess Lars never wanted him there, looked to get rid of him as soon as possible, but others felt like they needed him badly. He helped.
i saw him with suicidal in like 2001 in seattle and he let me up on stage and i took a bunch of photos of him looking right into my camera and playing for me.
2:36 Don't care what people say about Lars, deep down he is a good guy, a driven guy too which makes people think he can be an arsehole but if it wasn't for him Metallica would be long gone, even as early as 86!
@@clownpocket I wouldn't be so sure about that, Dave made James up his guitar level and not only that James was a pretty shy guy, I personally think it took Dave to show James how to be a front man and Lars was the driving force behind Metallica from day 1, personally I think James is quite lucky that he met those 2 in his early years to help mold him into the guy you see today.
@@Omar_E11 If you don't think Dave influenced James then you are kidding yourself, you only have to watch their early gigs with Dave to see who's ruling the stage, even at that point Cliff had more stage presents and confidence than James...jeez even Lars probably did as he's always been confident, only time James came out of his shell was when Dave left and was replaced with the quieter, more humble Kirk.
@@harrycallahan9143 Cliff influenced James musically. James was always the frontman. Even in Megadeth Dave wasn't originally going to be the frontman, but he eventually decided to sing because he couldn't find anyone else to do it. I think Metallica picked the best guy ever here. He’s by far the best bassist they’ve ever had. Period. And they just get along, it’s obvious he’s the man!
People trash the therapist but he was hugely a part of why Metallica was able to keep on. He did overstep some towards the end, but he played a huge role in Metallica's healing.
I think if I auditioned for a band and there was a therapist there doing a lot of the talking then it wouldn't fill me with a lot of confidence. Lars Ulrich
Trujillo is a role model for NOT giving up! Your time will come. Just be ready for it! He is a genuine dude, and deserves everything he got!
3:05 holds back rolling eyes
Seems more like he was looking up and to the right, which is reflexive when you have to think of something if you're a left-handed person. His body language doesn't seem to indicate any attempt at deception, so I think he was genuinely thinking back to the moment when he asked the question.
@@ageneralstateofchaos we dont need another therapists

@@H.E.M. someone woke up on both sides of the bed this morning
haha, yea. I would too. lars is an annoying little fuck
That fucking therapist ... ruined everything....
Денис Успешный Actually if it weren't for that therapist James wouldn't have opened up and Lars would be worse. Plus that therapist brought the 3 closer because they agreed he's got to go. So in an Odd way he helped lol.
I don't know, mate....Lars has gotten worse. After that therapist they lost their mojo
I think it was some kind of work man
why is that doctor asking questions. He's not part of the band
Bob Rock sitting there like: "I dont need this fucking bullshit".
He was their therapist during this time
Well... he thought he was by that time.
all of these comments regarding the psychologist or whoever the dude is are moronic. The guy was doing his job and his reasoning for asking that question was pretty solid.
@@variszarins yeah, what lars is bumbling in the end shows that therapist was needed
I’m a Cliff fan at heart but thank God for Rob, he seems like a totally chill and likeable guy.
It's amazing to think back that Rob has been in Metallica longer than Jason and Cliff... combined.
Why is that clown therapist speaking for the band?
right??....and how dare he question Robs "motives" lol
Probably because the band was a circus at that point. Terrible music and shit live. The real reason Jason left. RIP metallica 1981-1993
Fraiture you're the worst kind of music fan
@@nickdotjpg You mean someone with an opinion?
Thats what he’s there for
People rag on Lars on youtube all the time, but I think he is the nicest person in the band. He is considerate, funny.....just a good person.
He used to be such a dipshit though...
Kirk is really just there, mediating everything.
what is your evidence?
That look on Rob is like "What the heck did I get myself into?"
Phil Towle the Therapist always reminded me of Bishop the android from Aliens.
Yup
So true...😂
Lol what if they knocked his head off and it was all the white robot fluid 😂
I like to see the beginning to the current era of Metallica. It just brings so much happiness to see their journey.
Isn't that their therapist? Why's he even talking right now? haha.
Every Metallica video I watch I always see your comment
A band therapist?.............yep, that's normal.
Have you not watched Some Kind of Monster? They literally talk about how they got rid of him because he acted like he was a member of the band. Pretty common knowledge across the board.
@@joeaardvark9214 yeah, only idiots ask questions
Once they got a good new bassist they were like "We don't need a therapist" haha
Newstead said he left because James told him he cant do outside projects.
Hugh Jones and Lars having flash backs
Newstead didn't like where the band was headed and they didn't like that
Listening to Newstead you get an idea he was the only sane and rational person in the band at that point. Probably worked out the best for him to leave. Yea, he probably could've made shitload of cash but was it worth it staying in this circus.
@@Quicksilver_Cookie seriously? Jasons a crazy lunatic in a good way. Your comment is to presumptuous
If you watch A Year In A Half in the Life of Metallica, you'll see that they bullied the hell out of him and it was probably ongoing. I think Newsted has too much dignity to call em out on it publicly but yeah, they were mad he was doing alright with his band Echo Brain
C'mon, who wouldn't love this guy. I loved his reaction when Lars offers him a million dollars to join right then and there.
Lars: “ i have this over sensitive thing about making people in my space feel as comfortable as possible”
Jason: oh really.......
Lars has totally bad energy I was feeling awkward just listening to him :D
Jason leaving the band was a massive wake up call for Lars, his overprotectiveness of Rob here shows that he was/is trying to be a better person (at least in my opinion)
He is the best current bass player for Metallica I've ever heard.
At least he is in top5 of current bass players of Metallica.
I'd guess he feels bad for how much they shit all over Jason Newsted.
lars didn't like that therapist guy. but when he asked him why he asked rob that question he should have just said because thats why jason is no longer with the band. probably thought that was something that james would like to know.
I loved when Metalocalypse parodied the therapist thinking he was in the band.
Where I can see that?
I saw Rob twice, once at Ozz Fest, and once with Metallica. Love his crab like walk on stage.
i guess you have to walk like that if you wear your bass that low
And with that lady's and gentlemen the rest is history that's why Metallica is still going strong
Considering that the last bass player left because they wouldn't let him have side projects... The way rob was chewing on his food at the end had me rolling lol. I want to see the rest of this footage
yeah, but he knew that in Metallica he would make potentionally more money than from any of his side projects combined :D:D
that was hilarious. Imagine doing that in a real interview
This is a real job interview.
He's deciding if he wants this job or to do what he wants musically.
lars is super cool in that he is putting Rob in his shoes in the interview.
I bet Bob Rock secretly wished it was him
Lars did actually offer him the gig, it's in the film.
@Mr. Fireman to be fair, his username is trollstation123 . That's kind of what trolls do
Nah. He’s a career producer/engineer.
The psychiatrist is asking questions because he's desperate to keep his job and wants to appear useful
Rob has made metallica such a strong unit so glad he joined especially after watching some kind of monster how close my favourite band literally came to breaking up. Fuck it was so close. Highly look forward to seeing the metallica unit and slipknot in auckland in october it is gona kick ass.
Did you like the new album?
Okay so every time people are saying therapist, I think the are saying the rapist *~*
kwl story bro...
And there is the rapist
I guess you need a therapist :P
When it comes to Metallica...you probably aren't far off the mark. I bet he hands out banana stickers...
You know what this band needs now?.......More Cowbell!!!!!!!!!!
Holy fuck, now I know where that therapy episode of Metalocalypse comes from.
Rob is a class act, quality bass player and so laid back
I think Lars and James grew up a lot from the video up to this point. It's great to see that they got their shit together
Mike Lord lol
+Tim lefa I think that any group of people living in a bubble all of their adult lives like Metallica have, will suffer from immaturity and a lack of real world social skills
Brent Strathdee-Pehi like they need any lol
@@BrentStrathdeePehi yes. i think at this time they had been in a bubble too long... Sometimes in life when people leave… it leaves the door open for someone/something better to come along. Have always noticed that and love it!! This is a perfect example of that life fact. 🙌🏽❤️🔥🔥
Metallica has always picked good bass players
ha 'picked' I get it
Love how Lars stepped in.
Great choice to add Robert... always was on of my favorite musicians
2:36 Don't care what people say about Lars, deep down he is a good guy, a driven guy too which makes people think he can be an arsehole but if it wasn't for him Metallica would be long gone, even as early as 86!
Lars without Hetfield is just an annoying, arrogant nobody.
Hetfield without Lars still could have achieved a great band.
@@harrycallahan9143 Dave didn't make James "up" anything.
As long as there's no vocal proof of James admitting Mustaine influenced him I'm not going to believe ridiculous fan rumors.
I think Metallica picked the best guy ever here. He’s by far the best bassist they’ve ever had. Period. And they just get along, it’s obvious he’s the man!
What was wrong with Cliff and Jason?
@@cosmokramer179 That's a very stupid question. Cliff is dead, and Jason LEFT the band.
@@cosmokramer179 nothing wrong but rob is on a different league
The look on Bob Rock's face says it all, "This blows, I should be the new bassist."
It’s simply amazing to think Bob ever played an entire gig with Metallica. As someone who plays bass I can tell he struggles at the instrument.
People trash the therapist but he was hugely a part of why Metallica was able to keep on. He did overstep some towards the end, but he played a huge role in Metallica's healing.
I like this Rob guy, hope he makes it to a second interview
Rob was the best decision they made past 1991
Joins metallica then becomes bigger than metallica
Every time I see or hear “therapist” I think of the Brothers Grimsby😂😂
Man what a job interview! To join one of the greatest metal bands ever!!! No pressure Rob
I think if I auditioned for a band and there was a therapist there doing a lot of the talking then it wouldn't fill me with a lot of confidence. I mean I get why he's there from James, Lars and Kirk's perspective, but I'm not sure having him there for the first meeting was really a smart thing to do.
They should've gotten rid of that old dude long before this interview. The dude constantly oversteps his boundaries.
They got rid of him anyways
Texas Turner - Agreed!
He likes to work w/ a band and add his input creatively.....well, you chose the wrong band to play w/!
I think Rob Trujillo and Rick Rubin are personally responsible for everything good about Death Magnetic.
