In case you aren't aware but "Sousou No Frieren" (what they translated as Frieren the Slayer) is the Japanese name of the show. So that was also a title drop moment.

Sousou no Frieren can be translated as "Frieren at the funeral," which makes sense given Himmel. However, it can also be interpreted as "Frieren, the one who sends you to your funeral.:

Well I am fully bilingual, and I can tell you as a FACT that it's meant to be translated as 'Frieren the Slayer' lol 🤷🏻♂️

It's the most fascinating representation of demons I've seen in a while. They're an apex predator spices that evolved over time to look and sound like humans in order to better hunt them.

The flashback of that demon kid was really dark and disturbing, reminds me of the old story "the farmer and the snake", kindness to evil will be met by betrayal.
Except, that wasn't betrayal. Technically, all what happened into the village was Frieren's fault. Demon kid just didn't understand the meaning of words and Frieren knew it. Frieren wanted this experiment to fail and did everything for it to fail.
@hrul6639 How did you come to that conclusion? Lugner legit says she is right about demons right after the flashback lol. She literally did nothing even though she felt Himmel was wrong. The demons are not human even if they imitate human speech and that's the point of this little experiment. A demon cannot live as a human because it can't understand them, it saw nothing wrong with murdering somebody and taking their child to replace a child it ate to avoid being killed. All humans are the same to a demon as they don't have concepts like love, family and so on.
Frieren didn't want anything, she just knew what the results would be because she's had over a thousand years of experience dealing with demons. Himmel had to find out the hard way and now another person died because of his choices.

It is 1) foolish 2) legit a ticking time bomb until someone missteps and now they're dead. Keeping it well fed will only do so much, and no amount of empathy will save you

@@alarichrul6639Except it wasn't frieren's fault, if anything it was himmel and the rest of the villagers that agreed is the one who's responsible for that incident. Frieren went against the villager's opinions of giving the demon kid a chance but himmel agreed with the villagers who wants to give the demon kid a chance. Seeing that himmel was almost always right in frieren's eyes, frieren was convinced with the idea of giving the demon kid a chance to change. "Frieren wanted this experiment to fail and did everything for it to fail" how? She did nothing to influence the demon kid in a bad way and gave the demon kid a chance to repent for her sins even though she was against it and hated demons.
Just a note "Sousou no Frieren" doesn't really mean "Frieren the Slayer". It's much colder than that.
Sousous means "funeral". So the title of the show is Frieren's Funeral which of course is referencing all the funerals she must attend for lost friends.
But in the case of the demons, it more accurately translates to "Frieren the Funeral-bringer" or "Frieren the Undertaker". A "slayer" implies there's a battle or a fight. When you meet an undertaker, there is no fight, you're already dead, they just put you in the ground.
This episode introduces the demons of this universe, which are different from most LN/manga/anime. Here demons are just monster who can speak, and use language to deceive us. They have no concept to most of human emotions (a theme explored in a later story arc) and use words like "help me", "mother", "father" to deceive us. So people trying to claim "racism" in regards to demons in this universe just don't get it.
I found it interesting how I understood this is how the story depicts demons in this universe immediately yet every other reactor I’ve watched just could not wrap their heads around it.
It’s in a demon’s nature to deceive those, and their survival instinct to mimic human speech really is a scary thing.
I think it is funny how Fern keeps calling him Stark-sama, mocking him about the role of "village guardian" he had when they found him.
the demon girl flashback serves as one of the most jarring shifts in the show, not only because it introduces the world's major threat, but it also showed the first time Frieren and Himmel had strong opposing ideals
imo I think it's even intentionally showed through framing, when most of the time Frieren and Himmel are showed side by side or close to each other, in the flahsback they're either in separate frames or far apart

Been great watching you catch up on Frieren, this show does a great of dehumanizing the demons to the point that you realize how twisted they are, and how well they do at taking advantage of human emotions.
The demons in this show are honestly pretty terrifying, and I am so excited to see you get further into catching up on Frieren.

yup, because demon are natural predator which do not understand what is evil and what is good. The more demons want to understand and live together with other species, the more destruction are made. Soon in the next arc everyone will understand this, demon in this show cannot be reedeemed because it is what they are born from the beginning

Humanity in general is mentally not really good at dealing with those kinds of people, it's why people with those personality traits keep getting away with the stuff they inflict on others.

The guillotine (pronounced "gee-yo-teen" with a hard "g") was what they used to behead royalty during the French Revolution. It's also in the painting that Yor loved in Spy Family.

One thing in how to make a great show is, if you know how the pacing of the source material is really good and somehow the studio adapting it translated that pacing very well on the anime.
That's probably why some shows seem to feel like it went by too fast when it's not.

Stark is Shutaruku.
Aura is pronounced with the first "A" pronounced as "ʌ". Other "ura" characters remain as they are.
I think this is the closest pronunciation to Japanese.

This anime isn't just about fighting.
This is what I like more about it than animes like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba or Jujutsu Kaisen, which are just battles.
Also, Ms.JamiUwU, as you probably already know, has great words from the characters.
The title of this anime is sousou no Frieren (English title: Frieren:Beyond Journey's End), and "sousou" means "funeral" in Japanese.
In other words, it means holding a funeral and seeing them off.
It's a word that can be said to both friends and enemies, and it has two names.
But the names are not japanese and should also not be pronounced as such they are german. Stark = Power and Aura is the same as in english aura

I know that the names of people and regions that appear in this anime are originally German.
There are three types of characters in Japanese: kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
Since katakana is used for the characters in this anime, I wrote the pronunciation similar to katakana.

Idk if someone commented this before but all the names of cities, places and characters in this show are german words which funnily enough describe their character in some way. Its like the author went "how can I describe this character in one word?" and then translated that into german and picked it as a name. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's how they did it. This leads to quite the strange watching experience as a german where you often immediately know what a character is about by hearing their name xD

Linie - line (idk why this name)

This is a few weeks later but the most reasonable explanation of Linie's name that I've seen is it's line as in production line. Relating to the weapons she can produce and wield.

Frieren the Slayer is a bit of a wonky translation because it has only captured one connotation of the actual word, which has something to do with funeral/sending people to the afterlife. I understand why they translated it to Slayer, but Frieren the Undertaker would have been a much poetic/literal translation.

Lügner is German like all of Frieren's names, and it means liar. So from the start one knew even better what the nature of a demon was.

The thing I like about demons in this world isn't that they aren't even necessarily evil. It is more like they can't understand the viewpoint of humans. They are entirely lacking in empathy and most human emotions, so treating them like humans just does not work.
They are a creature that evolved to prey on humans. Is a lion evil because it eats a zebra? Especially since the lion cannot understand that zebra, nor can it see things from its perspective.

This is why demons are very dangerous for they can persuade as well as deceive and then once your guard is down that is when they strike.
The demon girl is tragic for it shows that sometimes it is their nature that can't be changed and their understanding of parents is non existent since they were created from demonic magic or spawn birthed from a demon lord.

How would you translate it? There's no real English equivalent to it's Japanese title, so just trying to capture the badass aspect of it is the best that can be done really
There are multiple ways to translate that. Undertaker, Funeral Goer, or Pualbarer. In the end, it still means attending a funeral/burial.
