Senna is my all time fav, but I think it does this car and history injustice not to mention Prost. After all, it was the two of them together who won those 15 races and led those laps. I wonder if we will ever see a pair of drivers of that sort of caliber in the same team again...

My heart still has a weakness for that 1993 Mclaren. To me the most beautiful Mclaren and that car was actually quite amazing considering the engine troubles the team had at the time. Also the car that truly made Ayrton Senna shine and the car he did some of his best driving.
I hope Mclaren will make a video about it. It doesn't have to win championships for us to love a car and get a video for it.

It was actually an interesting race. Let's put this into perspective from a formula one point of view. What is the one manufacturer in formula one that has competed in every season since the very birth of modern day formula one? Ferrari? Yes. It was founded by Enzo Ferrari and it is a marque that spans across the length and breadth of motor racing. Enzo passed in August of 1988. The Italian grand prix was in September 88. There is only one race that Mclaren did not win, or even finish. Monza. That race was won by Gerhard Berger, with also pulling off a spectacular and poignant 1/2 Michelle Alboretto. Ferrari's legends are sometimes built on dreams, this was genuinely a dream. How best to honour the old man by bringing his cars to a one two victory in their home race? All of Italy rejoiced, celebrated, cheered, cried. And the rest of the world could only smile as it really was the only way to honor a man who brought so much joy and dreams to people like me. I was a huge fan of Mclaren, still am, but even I had to smile and tip my hat to a out and out legend marking such a glorious day to mark the passing of an extraordinary man.

According to Stats F1 the MP4/4 led 1003 out of the 1031 laps that season which equals 97%.
No other F1 car has led more than 1000 laps in a single season. In fact no other car has led 900 laps in a season. The 2nd best car led 867 laps in the 1992 season which equals 84%.
I think the 1988 San Marino Grand Prix demonstrated how much ahead it was compared to the rivals. Everybody was lapped. However in most other races of the 1988 season the opposition usually finished close to a minute after the winning car.

    • @KeirThomas
      @KeirThomas 10 лет назад +4

I was determined to prove your stat wrong, and checked the 2002, 2011 and 2013 laps led charts...and you're right. Not even those dominant Ferraris and Red Bulls topped 900. Which is incredible considering how many races there are these days!

Numbers don't do the best and the examples by Prost and Schumacker show this. Those who make stories are those who have charisma, boldness, and draw attention without having a plausible explanation, that is, it has a star. Another example is James Hunt, who has only one title and even has a film about him like others that I will not mention in order not to prolong. Again, no offense.

Pete Weismann, out of California, especially designed the gearbox to fit lower in the car and use a smaller diameter clutch from Tilton, so both the engine and gearbox and sit lower in the chassis. Not to detract from Senna or Prost's accomplishments or the car's engineering, but a big part of the reason this thing was so dominant was because the rules were about to change drastically for 1989. The other teams didn't want to develop new cars just to have to start from the ground up the following season (no more turbos), so they basically just refreshed their cars from 1987.
I still love the car and Senna, but I have to wonder how the season would have turned out if the other teams were playing to win.

But McLaren also won the next season. And the season after that.
They made the right choices and ended up on top; the other teams had the exact same opportunity and they did not end up in the same place.

Right, and the season after that.
But they weren't nearly as DOMINANT as they were in 1988, where they won 15 out of 16 races. They were 10 for 16 in 1989, 6 for 16 in 1990, and 8 for 18 in 1991. My point wasn't that the car wouldn't have won the championship had the other teams built new cars, only that it probably wouldn't have won as many races.

TBustah but dont forget in 1988 the maclaren have no problem with mecanics failures (almost not) And others years maclaren had gear problens or engine .Its not just the pilot but the car .This is to make a car dominat. And 1988 mp4 was the CAR as senna was the man.

Just telling it like it is.
I like Senna, I like Prost, and I like the car, but there's no denying that it's legendary status is at least partially undue.

Have to wonder how Bruce or Jim Clark would have lapped in that beautiful work of mechanical art.

No one can deny Prost's talent. But when some here say he won 89 trying to make their point Prost was better than Senna . They probably don't know Senna made 13 poles that year , out of 16 races , and only did not win the title because FIA (or should I say Mr. Jean Marie Balestre) did not allow him to. Yes , he was punished on the incident with Prost where many other pilots also used the same safety escape and never lost single a point !!! It was probably the most shameful political manipulation on F1's history. My two cents!! #SennaTheGreatest

I never truly realized the implications of Senna's left-handed downshift. My daily driver is a manual, and, on occasion, I do have to perform the odd left-handed gear change (I'm in America, so we typically shift with the right hand). It's tricky, but doable. However, doing that 78 times through Lowes Hairpin, on full lock, with 800 horsepower underfoot...THAT'S amazing.

+Ferrariman601 Well tbh the shifter in the f1 car is much closer to you and the wheel than on a road car, and the mp4/4 didn't have 800 hp it had around 650.

I still think that the most dominant cars were Williamses 1992 and 1993 or they would've If Ayrton was the driver.

Without a doubt, the McLaren MP4/4 is the best Formula 1 car in all of history. It would be great if they could make a car like the MP4/4 again so that McLaren can once again be at the top of the great circus. Nowadays McLaren is not getting enough points to compete in the constructors' championship. We need them to make a car as great as the MP4/4 again so they can be fighting against the other teams. I hope they can take action and that later they will surprise us again with a great car. Thank you very much for you attention

Only lately I found that the first cars I loved was MC Laren's ones. I was born in 1982 and I remember the "coyote" as the first truly unforgettable car in my life. Then later on I begin watching F1. I'm Italian. In that time people in my country always refer to F1's with "Ferraris" (a plural of Ferrari). And later on I found that the "Ferrari" I loved the most wasn't a Ferrari at all..
It was the Mc Laren MP 4/4. I loved Senna too.
