About this video:
This video shows you how to connect your guitar to your computer for using BIAS FX, Amplitube, Guitar Rig, or one of the many other amp sim programs available. It shows how to use an "Audio Interface" to connect your guitar into much like a regular guitar amp, with the other side of the interface being plugged into a USB port on the computer. Watch this video, and you should have no trouble purchasing and setting up an audio interface, and playing your guitar through a virtual amp running on your computer.

It really frustrates me why youtubers dont make this simple like you did!
Thank you so much. After weeks of looking this is the most important and simple explanation. Thanks again
same......why don't people making video's *forget* about giving all sorts of information that isn't needed. Just close-ups with explanations of what's happening. That's all!!
The quicker, the better!!
I'm 34 and have played for like 20 years. Why have I never done this
Lol same
I have always loved the warmth and response of a traditional tube amplifier.
I am literally 34 and started playing at 14 and have the same exact question
@@joseolaguera7785 literally.
Cause going straight to amp is such a comfort zone for us. And I don't think any amp sim would ever change my mind, not that they are bad they sound better generally. But I could never neglect my marshall setup :c
Thanks Paul ... somebody actually telling you what’s needed instead of just showing you what sounds you get without knowing what’s used 👏👏👏👏👏 ...
Finally a simple tutorial! Thank you so much! Very informative!
Seriously !
Thank you. Watched like 50 "beginner" tutorials to finally find one that shows you the basics.
mate you're a fucking saint i've been trying to find a video like this which literally just says exactly what to do with no waffle. cheers
Why is the "f" word needed? Potty mouth
amazing tutorial
you’re a legend paul thank you
Most useful post so far.
I have learned tons from your series. I had no idea how you plugged the guitar in the computer, how you set up subs/ speakers and what kind to get, nor external components like expression pedals. For the tech illiterate, this is a lifesaver. Such an under discussed topic. Thank you very much! Subscribed ;)
Thank you Paul, you are a godsend. After playing cover songs on guitar forever and jamming with other musicians, a light finally went on in the nether regions of my thick skull, revealing a desire to create my own music. Thanks to you, I'm excited about music again, and the endless possibilities DAW, Focusrite, etc. offers, and am diving right in. You're a great teacher and ambassador for this creative process, and I'm honored to learn from your generous tutorials and vast experience.
Thanks for the simple clear instructions without fluff.
I appreciate the way you explained this! 🤘
Need more info on how to use an amp sim as well also how to use this with active monitors please.
I felt so dumb after watching this video. Thanks for explaining so simply! Liked and subscribed!
Great instructional video! Thanks for keeping it simple and straight to the point. 🎸🤘🎶🎵🎶
Thanks for the kind words Charles! 😀
THANK YOU I’ve been looking for a video like this for 3 weeks
easy simple. thank god.
Good stuff! 😀
Simple, direct, and straight to the point. I was wondering how this hooks up [since I am considering buying one] watched a dozen videos and none of them showed how to actually hook it up.
like your videos. nice, fast, simply explained without us having to watch someone muddle their way through and something they did rehearse beforehand. Well done sir. Thank you
Can I also connect my amplifier as a speaker to the interface?
Thanks for the video
Thanks Paul. I have the 4i4. Can you do a video on the software setup in focusrite? I'd really appreciate it.
Would have been nice to see how you interface BaisFX with this setup.
Paul, i love you!
best tutorial i've seen so far
So does this cut out audio crackling from direct connection between guitar and computer
Great video. straight to the point. You earned a sub.
I do have a question, if i have all of this set up on my computer and i can hear my guitar plus effects. If i play a song for example on my computer, would i be able to hear it through the same output? or it will come out from the computer speakers?
You're the best.
Great job - you deserve a trophy!
Thanks! 😃
Thank you for the awesome demo!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much man this video was so helpful ❤️
Thank you Paul
That was very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Paul for a great easy to understand tutorial.
Thank You for this video man!🙌🏻
No problem 👍
Great video - clear instructions on use. My question - can I have my guitar go through multi fx pedal first, then a cable from fx unit into Focusrite ( or any other audio interface ) before connecting to computer? Thanks
Thanks Guy for the kind words. Yes, you should be able to do that no problem.
Very useful, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Wos this is such a well explained video and easy to understand. Thanks!
Awesome video! Thanks for this explenation
It doesn't need to put the guitar on an amplificator ?
I connected my guitar to the microphone input, and it works, can someone explain me why you need audio interface?
Will help to me.
Good video.
*Finally I know how to connect now*
Thank you!!! 😃
You're welcome!
Hello, great video. I have recently purchased BIAS FX2. As audio interface for the guitar I have the Focusrite. For the video recording I usually use OBS. Unfortunately, the sound is transferred to OBS only clean ??? I have tried all the settings.....
If you dont have speaker monitors can you plug in to your amp using the "stereo out" from the interface to your guitar amplifier?
Can you ?
Wonder to know too
Very useful,Thank you👍
Thank you 💕
You’re welcome 😊
Can you use the computer speakers as well, or must you use the I/O speaker outputs?
Thanks!
You're welcome!
2:02 Yeah, I can't use my USB headset on either of those ports, so I'll have to stick to the sound coming from my computer.. But if I use amp software I can't play along to any songs since I can't hear my PC's audio anymore.. How can I fix this?
I'm sure a lot of other people just want to practice like this, so there has to be a solution somewhere..
i had the same problem as you, all i did was using Reaper DAW, once you got reaper add a track and put on some fx plugins if you want for additional tone (like the bias fx vst plugin or any other amp sim ect...) then you can activate the metronome or add the backing as another new track then press play, perfect, if you didn't understand anything, contact me via instagram @godfatherofdeathmetal , i will be available there :)
Play the song on your cellphone, lol
@@SiameseDream97 Then I can't hear the song because of the guitar sounds through my headphones, lol
I see some people using a DI box between the interface and the guitar. What is the reason for doing this?
Love your passion
Thank you!
Hi sir, tq for teach me.. 😉
You are welcome! 😀
Great tutorial ❤
Sould better explain what the costly 'adapter' is needed for. A simple cable connector to sound line in isnt worse, but nearly free of charge.
What type of speakers would you use? Any type of speaker?
So if we are using this interface in order to get the signal to a computer where It can be altered by bias FX or amplitube then are we going to hook speakers to the computer and get the altered signal out of the computer or will the computer alter the signal using amplitube or bias FX and then send it back to the audio interface where it can then be output from the audio interface to speakers or headphones? I just don't see what the point is to hooking speakers to the audio interface or headphones to the audio interface if the computer cannot alter the signal and then send it back to the audio interface to be output to the speakers are headphones. I thought the whole point of using the audio interface was to get the signal to the computer so I could be altered there with various software-based pedals and other simulators. Without this being explained I don't get anything from this video.
Hi I use cubase and was wondering how do I get the audio with the effect out...was having a bit of a struggle there....
helpful for beginners like me ! thx!
It's good to meet another Paul Douglas. LOL Love the video. I have the Focusrite scarlett 2i2 and Bias Fx2 Elite. Awesome tools to play with.
Might be a dumb question but if I’ve connected studio monitors to an interface and connected that to my PC, do the PC speakers work at the same time as the monitors? For instance if I wanted to play music through the speakers but play along on guitar through the monitors via the interface at the same time? Thanks
Questions: Sorry novice here with the software, and using audio interfaces with my guitar. I don't want to use the headphones either,or record! I bought 2- Kali Lp-8' power speakers, with a Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen.( As of right now I just get hissing using my Kali's? thrrough my laptop with positive bias fx2 software( I downloaded all the Focustire drivers too)
Ok with this audio interface, how can I use it with my Bias grid fx2 software, and connect it to my Blackstar 5htr combo amp, with a Blackstar 1x12 cab also connected to it? I have a Di box coming this Monday too. xlr inputs etc.
Suuuuuuuuuuper nice video, clear as water :D
Thank you so much, really appreciate that 👍
Great explanation. Could you also connect your guitar to at guitar amp and the guitar amp to the focusrite
can you hear the bias fx through your pc if you have your headset connected you pc and not the interface?
What if you don't plug in speakers or headphones? Can you hear the live sound through the computer speakers with only the usb connection? What if you connect headphones to the computer? Thanks!
Hey, I'll answer you cause I just received my interface and I'm waiting for my headphones to arrive.
If you run the sound to your PC speakers (not connected to the interface directly) your guitar will sound bad and with too much lag to be able to play it.
So we need powered speaker too?
@@prabindramakaju8367 yes
I have multi effects processor (zoom g5n) and headphones amp/dac (fiio k5 pro) and computer. Can this somehow be used instead of audio interface?
To me this is one of these rare moments when Technology comes really handy 😀😀
Could I do this and play a actual song through the computer and record covers?
hi sir nice guide!!! if you have time can you please check the muslady 222a or 422a if those would work as same as the focusrite 2i2, thank you so much
Hi, and thanks! I'm not personally familiar with the Muslady stuff, but I just checked them out online and they look like they should work pretty similarly to the focusrite interfaces e.g. line/instrument interface on the back you would plug your guitar into, monitor outs for speakers, USB interface to computer, etc. HTH!
can you just use your computer speakers as sound output for the guitar or do you actually have to hook up connections to the audio interface for speakers or headphones for sound?
You can use your speakers
Thanks mate.. Will I able to use pedal platform through this interface?
Great vid, keep the good job, but I have a question how about the pc itself, what are the best specs for guitar recording
Hi Paul! thank you, i came here via your site, I want to use the new mixwave Benson amp sim in Logic, and I have a RME babyface pro and Fender ultra telecaster. When I plug the guitar in directly in my babyface and have the guitar volume 100%, The signal coming in to the audio interface is quite low (-30db max). As such, the input level in the amp sim is also quite low.
Question: is this normal? i'm using +4dBu instrument input on the RME. Question 2: what is the optimal range (in db or dbfs) for input level in to the amp sim? Do I need a separate DI box?
Can you plug it in amp and get modded sounds?
Thanks for the tutorial!! I have a question though. Can I use my amp as a speaker by plugging it to the interface?
Yes possible
Nice video. Only one I found that showed the connection to the computer. It would be nice to take it complete - guitar all the way to the speakers including say Bias Amp software. Am I correct that I don't need an amp at all? Just plug my guitar into audio interface, plug an active studio monitor into the interface, plug the interface into a laptop, install the software, Bias Amp FX or Bias Amp 2 on the laptop, configure the software to some type of distortion amp simulator and start playing. The software controls the volume & effects. I could get rid of my amp and just use this? Thanks
What if you wanna mic a amp?
Can u use line 6 ux-1 with bias fx 2?
Can I run the headphone output into an
amp?
You can, but I'm not sure it will sound that great. I assume you mean a guitar amp, rather than a hi-fi amp? Guitar amps are designed for instrument level signals, whereas the headphone out will be a line level signal, i.e. a lot hotter.
That's cool and all but my question is how do i get the sound from my amp into my pc if i'm playing with headphones connected to my amp...
I use my Behringer UMC22 and use Bias FX, but when I try to run my PC audio through the headphones as well, the computer audio doesnt come through. Why is that and is there a way to fix it?
for example I want to play a song and play along through Bias FX, i can only hear Bias Fx not whatever else im playing
Hmm...that's strange. That's something I do all the time - have a backing track playing in RUclips for example, whilst jamming along to it using BIAS FX. Have you got your Windows sound settings to output into the Behringer UMC22 as well as BIAS FX?
@@PaulDouglasMusician yes when I switch my audio output to the UMC22, it keeps playing on my computer speaker. It's weird i get a playback error or no sound at all.
i want my amp to mylaptop / interface so i can use all this software like bias to come through my valve amp thats it using the software as a virtual multi effects can you do a video on making thisn software conected using an amp and a mixer
Great video 👍👍. I have a question, can I connect the audio interface with mic and guitar to my android mobile phone to take live skype classes? (I don't have a laptop) plz help.
I have a question
If I am recording using this connection :
Guitar --> Amp --> Amp Line Out --> Instrument Input of the audio interface --> computer (while recording)
Can i hear the guitar sound from the amp while recording ?
Nice vid very helpful! My question is if your playing say a clean tone and need to go to a crunch tone and back how do you do that while playing.
midi commander
I think you have to change the settings on the software you're using
👍tq sir
Is it possible to conect the guitar combo (I have a Blackstar 20w) to the interface ? Instead of studio monitors , I mean !
hi buddy, i want to use my line 6 x3 live with bias fx. how do i connect the line 6, and guitar to the audio interface. love ur vids. cheers.
Hi Stuart, and thanks for the kind words.
I've never used the Line 6 X3 Live, so I can't really offer any specific advice other than connect guitar to the X3 Live input, then the output that you would normally connect to an amp to one of your audio interface's inputs. Anyone who knows better than me, please correct me if I'm wrong here....
I have been doing this for about a year now, but I have been playing out of a Harbinger 12" speaker, which is huge. Should I be looking into studio monitors for this? Also, I barely record if at all, so I would only be playing and using the software (Bias FX 2) standalone. I also have a Scarlett. Thanks!
Is it possible too just be able to use an amp plug in on your computer as an amp instead of using headphones are en external source for sound?
Can we sound it thru the amplifier?
Do u reccommend a cheap one because ypyr interface is pretty much expensive
Hi Paul great vid , i am new to all this i was just wondering if i am using a Line 6 Power cab 112 would i connect it to the left output of my Audio Interface and then put everything to mono on Bias FX2 audio settings, Or does it have to be two speakers. Just using it to play along to backing tracks on my Daw. Thanks in advance
How to connect amp
Can you use a Boss Katana guitar amp as the speakers?
You could, although you'd want to avoid taking the output from the interface into the guitar input on the amp, as you'd be putting a line level signal into an input designed for an instrument level signal. If you get a dual mono phono to stereo mini jack cable, I believe you could use the Aux input on the back of the katana which might work better.
I have a two channel mixer with USB and I am not sure how to hook this up. I get an error about the sample rate not being the same. Help
Hi Paul.
Thanks for the videos.
One question......I am about to purchase Bias FX2 (using a Behringer UMC2020HD audio interface).......and I would like the sound to come thru my laptop speakers....how do I do this?
When I can get audio output from my laptop......then it is easy to bluetooth my laptop audio output to external speakers.
Hope you can help .....thanks
Can you connect a distortion pedal to it?
