that's an illusion....... the onyl reason you feel like you don't play better when you're recording is becuase you cannot mess up AT ALL and you know it. When you're playign without a recording we tend to mess up slightly but don't even notice it and just continue with the song. When recording those mess ups stop everything...... I thought the same thing, btu I actually realized I mess up the same amoutn whether recording or not.... it's just that it MATTERS when ur recording. (obviously this is just a suggestion on what it may be other than what you assume it is already, think about it that's all)
Haha...happens to me all the bloody time, seriously think I should record everything also, with time I'm sure it would help me to get over the gitters sometimes.
I quit for 15 years (after my best friend/guitarist in every band, died) then messed around for a few more years(uploaded some old videos of us playing). I just got serious a few months ago. Relearning takes a lot of work, but it feels good playing again.
As an aspiring guitarist, this really helps get myself started. I'll try using what I learned here in my next video (existing ones are horrible, don't even bother). Thanks, Rachel!
Hey everyone! I wanted to finally get into explaining the question I get the most: how I record my guitar videos. In this video I go into how to start editing both audio and video so that you can start making your own guitar videos as well! There are timestamps in the description if you'd like to jump around. Thanks for watching and I hope this is helpful to some of you :). Please let me know if you have any other questions.
She is so genuine and enthusiastic. Gosh. Who else feels how truly rottened their soul is AND knows how to record guitar videos after this? I do. Thumbs up for this vid. I bet she'll be a top youtuber within a year.
Can't say I have ever seen anyone whos smile comes jumping out of the tv and right on to your own face...but yours does! What a sweet, positive, cheerful and enthusiastic personality. Ok, that aside; Great vid for those just starting out or thinking of going for it. Reaper is only 60 bucks and like you said, can be used until you are ready. Full featureset, not limited. I have used several others, but for 60 bucks instead of 600 or more or less, this has everything I need. Thank you so much for this vid. I bet you are responsible for many ppl getting in there and giving it (recording) a shot. There is a learning curve, but one step at a time and ppl can be up and running in no time. You are a talented musician, great luck with your endeavors! :- )
I really love your positive spirit. I liked that you mentioned Audacity. You are clearly appealing to people who are on a budget. I love that you are addressing this. Well done.
This is why I love RUclips. I'm 34 years old and I've been playing guitar for 23 years but I have no idea how to properly record YT guitar related videos. With one quick search I've found a young woman that has given me such great advise. Thank you very much, I really appreciate the advice.
If any of you can't afford bias fx, amplitube has free amp sims and so does amplion free, I used the free ones for a year before I actually paid for anything. As far as interfaces go you can get a 1/4 to usb cable from amazon for 10 dollars and they work pretty good. When I started recording, a 4 track tape recorder cost a hundred bucks, its unbelievable how much technology has changed just in 10 years, its allowed everyone the ability to make music.
I have one suggestion that may make things easier if you have to manually sync the audio and video tracks. Before you start playing your song you could just play a single 16th note or a chord, the shorter the better, this will create a spike in both the waveform your video records as well as a spike on your actual audio track which makes syncing things a lot easier =)
Paul C clapping only works if you use an actual microphone to record your guitar though, I don't see how it'd work if you have it plugged into an interface.
I watched this video and before it ended I'd downloaded Reaper which said choose an interface I plugged in my Boss BR-800 selected USB on the power switch, added a track, armed a track and started recording. That is the first time I've recorded to a DAW and I have several but after reading the instructions for a few days I have always given up. I also have this Boss BR-800 which has gobbledegooked me into defeat as well. Thanks Rachelf !!!!
I honeslty appreciate this vid from you because I'm using audacity just get the idea across to the band members for the new songs and then later on were goign to get into a set up like yours at my pops studio.
I think I just entered Valhalla, here’s why: After looking through multiple videos on RUclips, I find this video very simple for my understanding level. Also metal. Cheers
Great video! Love the enthusiasm! Just a side note. Mac users get GarageBand for free and that is a fairly sweet (albeit simple) DAW that has everything you’d need to get started also. Cheers!
Second side note: GarageBand also has a nice library of instruments, loops and effects built right into the DAW. So you would have plenty to tinker with, without having to download additional VST’s and such.
I thought "that can be done better" several times in this video. Seconds later, every time, you did things how I do them. Example: Audacity vs DAW or dual tracking guitars vs single track. Great instructional!
Simple to the point unlike some other guys that dont show you how to get to the most important part how to get the signal in and how to use vst. Thanks Rachelf good video.
The world needs more people like you. Very cheerful! I think I first saw your video in facebook which was your guitar progress in a year. Then I checked your channel here. Then just to this day while browsing youtube I came across again, and I'm already a subscriber. I checked your previous/old videos and I noticed one element that I appreciate a lot. It is your willingness to share. Its like you're happiest when you share to us. You are very inspiring! I love the positive vibe of your contents and it is very nice that you are always smiling. Keep it up! 👍😊
BTW, REAPER also allows you to edit, mix, and add effects, titles, fades, etc., etc. to video! It's not a full-blown video program, but can do about everything needed for video. Very powerful!
I have Reaper, an AXE FXIII and an Audio Technica condenser microphone. I wanted something to make it easier to record from my iPhone, using the iPhone video and the great sound from my guitar, so I bought an iRig Pro. It supposedly works great with an iPhone with an app called iRig3 that combines the video and audio without losing the audio quality. It is being delivered in a couple of days from Amazon.
Sorry for such a dumb question, but how do you get just your raw guitar input when you use your amp as audio interface? When I use my amp as audio interface it always records the current settings i am currently on therefore making it impossible to add FX. Edit: Nevermind, I am actually retarded. But for people equally as dumb as me just turn every setting on your amp off xD
Rachel, I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I've been recording guitar for RUclips via a crappy webcam microphone because I'm not that savvy with computers, etc. But, this video made the basics for a n00b like me easy to understand and as of 10 minutes ago...I'm already recording things in Reaper! Thanks again. You're great.
youre on the right track not just for music but for your life as well. it sounds like music may be the field youre going to get into. looks like youre on the right path for a career. unless youre wanting to be a welder or doctor.
Not only it was an amazing video about getting started with it (the description was also awesome to track us back after we watched the whole stuff!), you sure ended it the best possible way with that message encouraging people to start recording themselves, it was really nice of you. Thanks a lot for everything! And that smile!
I appreciate the guide, but cutting out every second of dead space in between each sentence of a video makes this seem like a 17 minute run-on sentence. It hardly gives a listener a second or two to mentally digest the information you just spoke. It's like trying to eat a whole pie in one bite to learn how to bake one.
This video was insanely insightful and helpful. Taking my first steps into recording video and audio, I didn’t know where to start, really thankful for this tutorial!
I have watched several of your videos and am very impressed. I have been playing guitar a long time and you have so much drive and have picked it up so quickly! Awesome!
eh I actually find it quite unattractive.... Like a girl playing basket ball, or........ fighting..... very few females can pull of playing guitar without it looking cringy.

This is the first video of yours that I've seen and it was great. You are so positive and you smile a lot. You definitely like what you are doing and excited to share. Thank you so much! Rock on!!!
I love seeing young people like yourself, so passionate and enthusiastic about Guitar and music in general. Btw there are many effects possessors for PC available today as well a some very good free DAWs(digital audio workstation).
If anyone is wondering how to record dry signal, click on setting icon on THR Remote software on your PC. There is an option to record dry signal which needs to be checked. It took me a long time to find so maybe it will be of help to someone.
Many guitar amps now have built in usb to work as an audio interface. If the Boss Katana has this I would highly recommend getting one of those. As for a stand alone interface, they can be had for less than $60 new but you can find more high end ones used for around the same price point. BUY OR BUILD GOOD QUALITY CABLES.
Thanks so much for this helpful video. Ironically simple instructions such as this have been hard to find when I looked in the past. Saw your 2 years of progress video then this came up. I've been playing guitar for a long long time and have been wanting to get into recording for youtube. Would love to see a future video as you learn more and get more advanced techniques, such as using microphones, more advanced mixing etc. This is a great start and will gt me on my way!
Did you or are you going to attend a musical school or university? You just taught me more in a 20 minute video than I’ve learn’t all this year! Maybe it’s your up beat personality! Keep up the great dedication playing guitar, Your going places for sure no matter what career you choose! Good Luck!!
Really cool. I very much appreciate you putting this video up. There is not a lot of tutorials that are user friendly when it comes to using DAW's, however, you are an exception. You made perfect sense and now I can't wait to get back and start recording some riffs that cause the dead to rise.
This is so helpful for someone like me(been playing since 1974, I was 11yrs old when I started), thanks so much, like the shirt & the band, plus, you're making great progress & inspiring us all, keep on rockin' !!!
Thank you so much! Ive barley started playing electric guitar and I’ve been making random song parts and wanted to record it and make music thank you again!!
Hey Rachel,I just recently started learning to play the electric guitar (I’m teaching myself) and your videos really motivate me to keep going. Thank you for always being so smiley and positive. ❤️
Okay, you are my idol. I started learning guitar with a teacher and i had to drop the lessons because of the school, i am a senior now. When i go to college ı definitely will start again cuz guitar is life and it makes me really sad that i am unable to play this year, because i have no time. It makes me really happy to see you improving and it makes me really happy to see you happy😁 Your videos are very encouraging and inspirational for newbies like me please keep up with your amazing content😊
Such energy and animation in your communication. It's infectious. I feel pumped now. LOLOL Oh btw I really want THR10 bad. I'm thinking the standard version because I play a little of everything.
Ha brilliant! I just bought a Yamaha THR10 and got it working with the free version of Cubase it came with, that's why I was looking for a video like this one and here you are using the same amp! Bonus :-)
Rachelf I had trouble as well, I had to uninstall the driver and reinstall with the amp plugged in, then I add it as a bus and removed the existing ones, it worked then ☺
Thanks for sharing. I want to also upload some guitar videos one day when my pedalboard is ready. I used a similar setup before I moved to linux. It's not that you can't do many of the same things on linux but there is a lot less options on linux and I always had problems with latency which is why I started building my pedalboard. My plan is to have an ampless easy to plug and play pedalboard. The board currently contains: a noise suppressor (boss ns-2), a preamp for both clean and distortion channels (amt ss-11a), a reverb (strymon bigsky) and 2 cabinet simulator stomboxes (two notes torpedo cab). I am not rich and it took a long time to build the board but I am pretty excited. I still need to get a pretty beefy power supply (i am thinking yankee hs-m12), a compressor and an actual audio interface. But man it is so much easier for me to play when i don't need to worry about pc software or latency and i still have the advantages of being able to play through headphones.
Actually, this is a lot of information that you presented here. Thank you for sharing so many various skills that you are experienced with. Thank you for your contagious enthusiasm!
Thank you for taking the time to teach us how to record videos I’ve recorded a few videos on my phone that I’ve posted that don’t really sound or look too good
Great video Rachel! I just discovered your RUclips channel yesterday (better late than never) and I love you content and your enthusiasm. You are inspiring.
Hiya, I find your videos really clear and concise. Because you are so enthusiastic about your subject you do seem to speak very fast, slowing it down just a bit would be better (in my opinion). Either way, thanks for taking the time to record this.
You ever get "red light fever?" It's when you turn on the recorder, tense all up and don't play as well as you can. Happens to me all of the time.
that's an illusion....... the onyl reason you feel like you don't play better when you're recording is becuase you cannot mess up AT ALL and you know it.
When you're playign without a recording we tend to mess up slightly but don't even notice it and just continue with the song.

I like your helpful spirit. Have you tried Final Cut X? No monthly fees.
Hey, your channel is really great! Haven't tried it myself as I'm using a PC for editing, but could be a good option for others!
Nice price tag of $300 🙄😄
+The-Art-of-Guitar
Hey. Have you tried Blender? It's 3D software, but it has a video editor. And it's open source.

Rachelf Big fan... I have a 64 channel studio here and would love to collab sometime. Are you going to the NAMM SHOW?
Rachelf Do you think reaper would work for Mac?
+Mycroft Holmes I'm not going to NAMM, but it would be cool to go sometime in the future!
+ Danny Sitek It appears there is a version of Reaper for Mac as well as Windows!

Amazing tutorial. Its super nice how you smile during the whole video, it shows that you love what you do! Thanks for the effort you put in this :)
Thank you for the preview of the sync function. I’ll be using this soon. Music matters! God bless ya
+BorbonyHasBike Definitely a good tip! I often do something similar.
I clap sync mine
Paul C clapping only works if you use an actual microphone to record your guitar though, I don't see how it'd work if you have it plugged into an interface.
I often play a note and then y pull it off. That way i have two reference points in both the video and the audio

I also used Bias FX and reaper on my first two vids. Still have a lot to learn as far as mixing, but I have no complains :)
How's guitar going now?
If you were wondering, usb mixers work just as well. Just be sure to have all the settings at their default so you can do effects on your DAW
Love your smile, enthusiasm, and information - thanks!
Thank You Rachel for ur Motivation...I'll start making my electric guitar videos too...
Such energy and animation in your communication. It's infectious. I feel pumped now. LOLOL
Oh btw I really want THR10 bad. I'm thinking the standard version because I play a little of everything.
Ha brilliant! I just bought a Yamaha THR10 and got it working with the free version of Cubase it came with, that's why I was looking for a video like this one and here you are using the same amp! Bonus :-)
Awesome! I had some trouble getting Cubase working, but I'm sure it's a good option as well! Hope you are enjoying the amp :)
You are a very positive and bright person ;) I like your guitars and love how you play 😉😊
Actually, this is a lot of information that you presented here. Thank you for sharing so many various skills that you are experienced with. Thank you for your contagious enthusiasm!

Recently started recording and this video is an absolute life saver. Thank you so much Rachel!
Hiya, I find your videos really clear and concise. Because you are so enthusiastic about your subject you do seem to speak very fast, slowing it down just a bit would be better (in my opinion). Either way, thanks for taking the time to record this.
Like the Sonata shirt!!
Came here looking for the answers to all those questions. Found 'em. Thanks! Nice non-technical walkthrough of the process, just what I was needing :)
