  • Growing up Memoirs of a Geisha was one of my all time favorite movies. However, do the Kimonos of the movie hold up to being accurate? Does Collen Atwood as costume designer deserve her award for her work on this particular film? I have over a decades worth of experience and kimono knowledge. With that, a Tacky Historian will examine this "classic" film and see if the movie deserves its reputation.

Pumpkins kimono and hair look pretty good in the beginning of the movie! True the kimono was to reflect the careictius said the derecter in the behind the seans

I used to love that movie but ever since I started collecting and wearing kimono I’m just shaking my head at how sloppy they look all the time. I have actually read the book and albeit it’s shortcomings the book has some gorgeous descriptions of kimono with woven lacquer threads and embroidery but the movie lacks in subtle elegance. Honestly just regarding the costumes I enjoyed ,Sakuran‘ more. It’s more like the ,Marie Antoinette‘ approach with over the top colours and stylised dressing.

I agree with you on all three points!! Sakuran is one my personal favorites because of its use of color as well as Marie Antoinette!!

I think the shape with the obi is the biggest problem as far as accuracy goes for the costumes. The director said they wanted the obi cinched in at the waist and not as “boxy” as obi are worn in real life. Although I did hate that Sayuri’s kimono for her maiko debut was not accurate at all. Irl a maiko would wear a formal black crested kimono for her debut.
I actually don’t mind the inaccuracies in the costumes too much, it’s the inaccuracies in the hairstyles that really drove me bonkers. They don’t look anything like real geisha at all. Pumpkin as a maiko was probably the closest but what the hell was going on with everyone else?
Also the inaccuracies with the dances are abhorrent but that’s another topic altogether.

Great observation about the what should have been Sayuri’s Tomesode kimono. I’m sure they wanted something more “stunning”. In my personal opinion, Tomosode are a great option in that regard, but just like the obi it’s down to what they felt would look good on screen for an audience that would generally not know better.
The hair doesn’t bother me as much even though you’re completely right it’s pretty inauthentic.
As far as sayuri’s dancing, ask shogo has a video on her “Nihon buyo” style dancing. It’s a great watch. The short of it is the dance is an amalgamation of japanese style dancing with A LOT of artistic flair.

@@TackyHistorian oh yeah, I remember that Let’s Ask Shogo video. It was good. I also take Kamigata-mai lessons so I was just nodding along with the video the whole time lol.

0:43: The author's name is Arthur Golden, not Arthur Gordon.
