The author of Memoirs of a Geisha Arthur Golden interviewed Mineko Iwasaki and used her life story for the novel. Iwasaki later sued golden having cited a breach of confidentiality and later sued and settled out of court. Iwasaki later wrote Geisha A Life which I strongly recommend reading.
He didn't really use "her" story. The action of the book is set much earlier that Mineko's lifetime. I read the book too after the movie. The most difficult part was the main roles are played by a Chinese and a Taiwanese actress'. I own it. It is beautiful and tragic. Understanding though the history of these two countries? I wish it was cast differently. Maybe for this reason, Curse of the Golden Flower might deserve a higher ranking? I was impressed that you mentioned, House of the Flying Daggers. Another beautifully dressed and written movie. I would add the most recent movie version of, Sweeney Todd. The story is not that great, and the actors are talented, but still miscast for the roles (except for the chairman and Nobu). The music and the overall look of the movie are amazing, though.
Disney’s live action Cinderella’s blue gown is still up to this day my favorite when it comes to flow and movement. I still remember the first time I saw it. From the transformation scene to the ballroom dance. It felt beautiful and ethereal.
Also this is random but Crazy Rich Asians fancy outfits like the gold wedding dress was gorgeous but like obviously not every single outfit and that this movie would have some of the absolute best outfits throughout but like that was the first time in awhile I really appreciated the outfits in the movies again like it was something so gorgeous and made the mood so much more and a new touch than I’m used to as an absolute amateur:)
I actually liked the choices of outfits in that movie, as someone who has lived in both North America and Asia I feel they really depicted the difference in fashion really well. In the beginning Rachel was dressed in a way that literally screams "American-born Chinese". And gaudy outfits of her friend's family clearly tells audiences who are familiar with Asian fashion that their family was dressed like the typical "new-rich", which gives so much untold information about their status and class in society.
The wedding seen wasn’t necessarily moving, but I can confidently say that the wedding seen is the most beautiful seen I have ever seen. In an ascetic way not on an emotional level.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they used the people from Finale Wedding Studios for Crazy Rich Asians, they're a wedding dress studio from Thailand and they do these amazing wedding gowns
Even though it’s more subdued, I REALLY love the looks in Pride and Prejudice 2005. Well, it is one of my favorite films of all time, but there’s something so natural and lived in about the interpretation and I feel that the clothes must have played an important yet understated role in that. Love your work as usual! Please keep it up ❤️
I love how you incorporated movies from around the world instead of just movies from the West. To all you others highly suggest The Handmaiden and House of Flying daggers!
Jane Seymour also has it written into her contract that she gets to keep her costumes. I remember she once wore the gold dress from Winds of War to an awards ceremony. I loved that she actually wears the costumes/clothes.
Anna Karenina's costume design is the stuff dreams are made of. The contrast between Anna and Kitty is on point. I also love the persona clothes and styling created for Amy Adams in Nocturnal Animals.
Marie Antoinette is such a fabulous movie and people are just missing out! It must be one of the most rewatched movies in my life. The music, the costumes, the sceneries... it gives me a weird sense of longing 💕💕💕
One movie that I love the costumes in is Crimson Peak, the costume designer is Kate Hawley, what I love about it is how the costumes are used with the sets to help understand the characters and they are so so so beautiful. Anyway, another great video, I always enjoy your content ❤️
Crimson peak is my second favorite movie! The costume design has inspired my art so much, and I mean every costume is just gorgeous! Especially the golden Nancy drew dress, and the mourning belt! And Lucilles moth robe is so beautiful too I could gush over it for hours
I LOVE that you include "highbrow" / oscar winner films and "lowbrow"/ teen girly films and v old films and eastern films in your videos and regard them all with the same respect!!! So sick of film essayists undervaluing certain films because they aren't artsy / oscar winners - all of these films are good and the costume for all of them are important!
This is probably my favorite channel now. Warning: Emotions. I'm a trans woman who transitioned pretty early, like 12-13. I'm 28 now, and these videos are helping me remember something about why I loved movies (specifically movies that centered costume design) as a kid. Something about clothes helps us visualize identity, put it into material terms. Thinking about fashion and dress helped me understand the kind of woman I wanted to be, and try to come up with a vision for myself that I could be at home in. So many of these movies-- the period pieces, the wacky comedies, the fantasies-- helped me "try on" different sides to myself while I was still figuring out my gender. Flash forward, I'm 28 now, depressed, overworked, underpaid. A lot of the time I dress just for pragmatism. But this channel has helped remind me of the magic of "dress up" and really, the magic of femininity, as they first appeared to me so many years ago. Thank you so much for all your work, I promise it's worth it. This channel is a true gem
this was such an unbelievably amazing comment to read, you truly made my day, thank you. i know these stressful times are taking it out of everyone right now and i'm so glad that these little videos are able to help keep your mind off of things, even if it's only for a few minutes. wishing you the best and sending lots of love 💕here's to better and more beautiful days soon!
this comment is truly touching; thank you for sharing such a vulnerable aspect of your story! it’s true that expressing identity through clothes can bring so much joy. you look beautiful in your profile picture by the way!
Moulin Rouge has some of my favourite costumes, the can can dresses are incredible especially as every single one is different and has a unique flair I think it feeds into the campness of them film perfectly, every characters costume fits them perfectly and the set design is marvellous
The Lizzie McGuire movie is so underrated in terms of costume design. All of lizzie’s outfits in the movie were amazing. Lizzie was wearing vivienne Westwood off the runway.
@@drawnwithlove3499 in the I want candy scene they're there and they're put there deliberately-the film doesn't bother with historical accuracy that much and it doesn't pretend to. I mean, it has rap music playing in scenes lol

I was doubting a few minutes ago on if I wanna be a costume designer but this video made realize a little that I wanna do an iconic look for a movie or theater. Thank you great video!!!
I love the inclusion of Frida since the wardrobe is an ode to traditional and indigenous clothing here in México But I Just have to mention that the clothing both in the movie and in real life did not reflect the time period. It was actually a Statement to wear such clothes as the society of Her time period just wore what was fashionable in the US and Europe at the time (1920's to 1950's). She wore them to simbolize her connection to her origins and to distinguish herself from other painters and important figures from all over the world that befriended and surrounded her. Even at the time when she was born in 1907 the Fashion for the upper classes (the one she came from and lived in) was of French inspiration as popularized by the President/dictator Porfirio Díaz. Frida was actually of German descent(by her father) but her choice of clothing was to reflect the love for her country. Actually she alongside her husband Diego where the ones who inspided their contemporaries to look at popular or common mexican art of indigenous roots for inspiration instead of following yet again foreign trends
I completely agree with your choices. So glad you mentioned Curse of the Golden Flower and The Duchess! Those are my faves as well. I loved costume design in The Tourist as well!
Maarya S I love The Cell. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but one of my favs. I love the story and the emotional strength of Dr. Catherine Deane. She’s heroic! The sets and costumes were too much to take in all at one. Would have to pause often to see everything.
Queen Amidala's/Padmé's (Natalie Portman) dresses in the Star Wars prequels are some of my favourite costumes ever… even though the movies get so much hate, I think that everyone can agree on the costumes being truly amazing.
while I don’t know your background I really really love listening to your pronunciation of the names of pieces and characters in memoirs of a geisha, it shows you know what your putting out and your well versed in what you are doing and it’s so so appreciated.

Not gonna lie, Mona May has been my favorite designer in Hollywood ever since Enchanted. Love these videos so much! It's a shame how under appreciated the costumes and designers are in the mainstream. Style is so important to a character! I was surprised that the costume designer of Gone With the Wind was a man, the outfits were amazing!
Thank you for recognizing Ruth Carter. Her creativity for African Centric clothing is beyond inspiring and lovely. As a African Anerican it's nice to see other races and cultures appreciate the beauty, culture, innovation in her African tribal clothing. Also, you're other movies choices were great as well. You thought me something about fashion.
I was surprised not to see Orlando in here, the costume design in there is absolutely fabulous! However, I have seen a lot of my personal favourites such as Handmaiden, House of Flying Daggers or Curse of the Golden Flower and also added a couple of films to my "to watch" list, thank you for the video!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! If you're interested in more Old Hollywood wardrobe, I suggest watching The Women, a 1939 movie, with costumes designed by Gilbert Adrian. Any movies with Adrian as costume designer are a feast to the eyes.
I feel Baby Driver could maybe get an honourable mention in how subtle it shows the characters traits. Bats always wears red as he is always angry, and acts as a red heron to the main villain, buddy who always wears black. Deborah often wears yellow, which was Baby’s mother’s favourite colour, representing familiarity etc. Baby’s jacket is black and white, showing how he’s stuck inbetween a good life (his foster father, in which I will add that when he’s with him, he wears white, showing no mixed feelings, and his life with Deb) and his life of crime. Also at the end, Baby is wearing all black (and grey) to show he has gone further down the life of crime. This is probably completely ott but I thinks it’s cool
Yes! That movie is all around awesome. The costumes, while not overtly extravagant & grand, don't get enough credit as they play an important role in the story nevertheless.
I just watched What a Way to Go because of this video haha! I have never heard about this movie before, and I loved it! Thank you, the movie is fun and the dresses are amazing!

Costumes in Heathers were all iconic especially the colors representing characters personalities it was such a brilliant idea and god those shoulder pads are so iconic too
I'd absolutely love to see your take on Bollywood movies and their costumes. Love your voice, pronunciation, and shedding light on the beautiful world that is costume design. Keep going!
Strictly a personal note. Thank you for mentioning the lovely, and sadly, all but forgotten movie, "What a Way to Go." It's so fun on so many levels and, yes, the wardrobe is Head at her best. I'm pleased that a younger generation person is both aware of this shiny old gem and calling attention to it.
i just watched gone with the wind a few days ago, and i agree!! it has some of the best costumes ive ever seen on film. the scene of her walking into ashleys birthday party in that absolutely *stunning* red dress literally made my jaw drop. i think about it at least once a week.
House of Flying Daggers was *chefs kiss* beautiful. I absolutely love that movie and gawk at the costumes every single time. I love Chinese fashion from that era because it's elegant and flowy so no wonder the Chinese themselves favour that era.
This is fantastic! Love the work you're doing! Smart, well-researched, and engaging! I'll add: Mira Nair's Vanity Fair (cultural mashup done right), Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation (everything about the film has that quality of quiet suspension, costumes included), Night of the Comet (aspirational, time-appropriate, but also off-kilter and surreal, like the story), Ari Aster's Midsommar (clothing is an extension of the plot with clues), The Hunger Games, Desperately Seeking Susan (fun clothing for a fun film), Showgirls (every frame of this film is visually appealing and just ripe, idk how else to put it!), and Gregg Araki's Nowhere, where everyone's outfits are like a super-saturated version of teenwear, perfect for a supersaturated story. Great picks - love your taste in films!
Can I just note how much I appreciate her effort to try to pronounce things right? Especially in the movies that weren’t English, I could tell she was really trying her best to pronounce them correctly. I was especially shocked at her chinese pronunciation, she got the tones almost perfect🖤💗another compliment is just the shear amount of effort that was put into this video, when I was watching it I couldn’t help but wonder how someone got all this information and didn’t rip their hair out, and It was also very sweet to see you credit the people who helped you in the end!👍👍
Absolutely love this list, as well as how many honorable mentions you made time for! Good costume design is one of those things that always makes or breaks a film for me.

It was sexualized orientalist garbage written by a white dude, adapted by white people, made for white people who have never seen a Geisha or kimono
That wedding scene made me cry
The wedding seen wasn’t necessarily moving, but I can confidently say that the wedding seen is the most beautiful seen I have ever seen. In an ascetic way not on an emotional level.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they used the people from Finale Wedding Studios for Crazy Rich Asians, they're a wedding dress studio from Thailand and they do these amazing wedding gowns
I’m so glad that you put Titanic on here, those outfits are EVERYTHING
Even though it’s more subdued, I REALLY love the looks in Pride and Prejudice 2005. Well, it is one of my favorite films of all time, but there’s something so natural and lived in about the interpretation and I feel that the clothes must have played an important yet understated role in that. Love your work as usual! Please keep it up ❤️
totally agree
Agreed! I feel the clothes in the 2005 film fit the characters and their social class wonderfully, unlike in other versions.
That movie is ART omg ❤
Agreed. One of my favorite movies ♥️
Yes I agree! I was hoping it would be on this list!
I feel it is a lost potential. They seem so random and modest. While it was one of the most interesting costume periods, imo.
Oh, the Tom Ford movies!
Angélica Villamarín Amy’s clothes and whole style was one of my top favorites.
@@BbGun-lw5vi I was hypnotized the first time I saw the movie. It speaks volumes about her state of mind.
Marie Antoinette is such a fabulous movie and people are just missing out! It must be one of the most rewatched movies in my life. The music, the costumes, the sceneries... it gives me a weird sense of longing 💕💕💕
same here!
One movie that I love the costumes in is Crimson Peak, the costume designer is Kate Hawley, what I love about it is how the costumes are used with the sets to help understand the characters and they are so so so beautiful. Anyway, another great video, I always enjoy your content ❤️
You are so right! Every single thing which Mia Wasikowska wears in Crimson Preak should be in a museum
@kingcerati Wow that sounds amazing! I would love to see that someday ❤️
Crimson peak is my second favorite movie! The costume design has inspired my art so much, and I mean every costume is just gorgeous! Especially the golden Nancy drew dress, and the mourning belt! And Lucilles moth robe is so beautiful too I could gush over it for hours
Totally loves the movie and the costumes too.. one of my fav historical movie
Yes! I loved this film!
This channel is a true gem
this was such an unbelievably amazing comment to read, you truly made my day, thank you. i know these stressful times are taking it out of everyone right now and i'm so glad that these little videos are able to help keep your mind off of things, even if it's only for a few minutes. wishing you the best and sending lots of love 💕here's to better and more beautiful days soon!
what a beautiful comment!! this made my day, thankyou💖
This is such a lovely comment ❤️ really made my day!
this comment is truly touching; thank you for sharing such a vulnerable aspect of your story! it’s true that expressing identity through clothes can bring so much joy. you look beautiful in your profile picture by the way!
That’s such a beautiful story, thank you for sharing. I’m not trans but contra points really taught me a lot I was ignorant too. Hope you’re well!
I’m really interested in your opinions on Wes Anderson films like “Grand Budapest Hotel” And “Moonrise Kingdom” ??
Moulin Rouge has some of my favourite costumes, the can can dresses are incredible especially as every single one is different and has a unique flair I think it feeds into the campness of them film perfectly, every characters costume fits them perfectly and the set design is marvellous
I love Moulin Rouge!
The Lizzie McGuire movie is so underrated in terms of costume design. All of lizzie’s outfits in the movie were amazing. Lizzie was wearing vivienne Westwood off the runway.
Marie Antoinette movie had AMAZING costumes, it was so nice to look at.
Omg yes!
Yes I agree except for the purple Converse high tops in one of the scenes.
@@marvel7146 wait what where
@@drawnwithlove3499 in the I want candy scene they're there and they're put there deliberately-the film doesn't bother with historical accuracy that much and it doesn't pretend to. I mean, it has rap music playing in scenes lol
I really do appreciate the fact that you included Devdas in your honourable list, I would have loved to hear more about your opinion on it though, but anyway great video
I feel so educated right now. I swear if school was like this, I wouldn't mind listening every single day :)
I really like the costumes from the movie "Rear Window". I think the outfits are gorgeous, but I didn't know it was designed by Edith Head as well!!
The costumes in that movie were to die for! Hitchcock's movies in general have impeccable costume design.
I was doubting a few minutes ago on if I wanna be a costume designer but this video made realize a little that I wanna do an iconic look for a movie or theater. Thank you great video!!!
Do you sew?
All the best for your future!
I think "Rear window" also has some of the most gorgeous costumes in film history
S. B. We just watch that for our family movie club and that was a huge part of the discussion. Gorgeous clothes on Grace Kelly!
Yes
I love the inclusion of Frida since the wardrobe is an ode to traditional and indigenous clothing here in México
But I Just have to mention that the clothing both in the movie and in real life did not reflect the time period.
Great list. I'd add Atonement just for that green dress Keira Knightley wore. A lot of her movies have great costumes.
i love how inclusive this is, with the asian + bollywood films being included
Love Bollywood! Bhansali films are always a treat to the eyes.
I completely agree with your choices. So glad you mentioned Curse of the Golden Flower and The Duchess! Those are my faves as well.
I loved costume design in The Tourist as well!
TALENTED, BRILLIANT, INCREDIBLE, AMAZING, SHOW STOPPING, SPECTACULAR, NEVER THE SAME, TOTALLY UNIQUE
Eiko Ishioka's work in Tarsem Singh's "The Cell" and "The Fall" are absolutely otherworldly
Maarya S I love The Cell. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but one of my favs. I love the story and the emotional strength of Dr. Catherine Deane. She’s heroic! The sets and costumes were too much to take in all at one. Would have to pause often to see everything.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes will always have a special place in my heart.
Haven't seen it, only the part were lorallie(I can't spell ;-;) Took the diamond tiara. Yet I fell in love with it
Same
I loved that you included films with people of color and designers of color. Great video. More please
Queen Amidala's/Padmé's (Natalie Portman) dresses in the Star Wars prequels are some of my favourite costumes ever… even though the movies get so much hate, I think that everyone can agree on the costumes being truly amazing.
Dimitra-Eleni Kalaitzi yesss just watched that movie, totally agree
It's heavily inspired by Mongolian traditional dress. You should look into it!
they were quite beautiful yes
while I don’t know your background I really really love listening to your pronunciation of the names of pieces and characters in memoirs of a geisha, it shows you know what your putting out and your well versed in what you are doing and it’s so so appreciated.
This channel has absolutely saved me during quarantine, I am always looking for videos talking about fashion AND movies at the same time, and this channel is like my dream come true. I’ve already recommended it to multiple people. We would be best friends in real life❤️
Not gonna lie, Mona May has been my favorite designer in Hollywood ever since Enchanted.
I love you for just mentioning 'Harlots', that show doesn't get enough love,
also the work you put into your videos is incredible!
Ikr
Yes! And Harlots is such an amazing show. The clothing? Amazing.
A movie's costumes I love is uptown girls. Definitely effected my personal thoughts on costume design reflecting characters.
Omg YES
the fact thatt you know Devdas and House of flying daggers... ugh i love you!!!
I HIGHLY recommend you watch Hero and Crouching Tiger! The costume design is INSANE and very metaphorical
Wuxia in general have gorgeous costumes and cinematopgraphy. They must have insanely high budgets.
I was so hoping you would mention Elizabeth!! Its amazing, I can't say enough about the eye holding costume design.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! If you're interested in more Old Hollywood wardrobe, I suggest watching The Women, a 1939 movie, with costumes designed by Gilbert Adrian. Any movies with Adrian as costume designer are a feast to the eyes.
I love it. In fact, any film made by George Cukor could appear on this list.
The Women is a fantastic "chick flick" the costumes and the hilarious dialog is on point.
Thank you so much for including memoirs of a geisha because the costumes were absolutely beautiful and one of my favourites of all time
I feel Baby Driver could maybe get an honourable mention in how subtle it shows the characters traits.
I love how you put so much effort into pronouncing peoples names correctly 💕
I wasn't expecting "DEVDAS" in the list! Classic gem ❤ The costumes were absolutely amazing as the film 😍 Put in mughal-e-azam too 💫
Honorable mentions:
La belle et la bete
Atonement
Black swan
Notebook
It is both weird and lovely to find someone who has seen and loved all the same movies
Thanks for highlighting the House of Flying Daggers and Memoirs of a Gisha. Amazing costumes.
YOUR TASTE!! I 100% agree w you on most of these movies since I have seen them and im so happy one of my favorite channels has recognized the wardrobes in these movies! i love your videos and I'm so happy you made this one especially! thank you for your hard work and I can't wait for the next video :D 💖
Love the fashion in Romy and Michelle!
Honorable mention: Mary-Kate & Ashley movies.
(I'd actually love if you made a video about the fashion in Mary-Kate & Ashley movies. I love when they matched.)
Another amazing video! You are so underrated. One of my personal favourite films in terms of costume design and set pieces is "the fall" directed by tarsem singh, costumes by eiko ishioka
My Fair Lady is definitely my favorite out of the movies you mentioned, but a lot of the others you put in had great costumes as well.
I know it is about movie but in game of thrones's deeneryas and Margery costume are so gorgeous. You should make a separate list about tv series
I really love Cersei and Brienne's costumes too. The power dressing is gorgeous. There are many beautiful men's costumes as well.
I’m so happy you included Anne of The Thousand Days. It’s my one of my favorite movies and the costumes are breathtaking!!!
Your channel makes my inner girly girl so happy and helps me feel better in an extremely stressful time, so thank you!
Omg! I've been trying to remember the name of "What A Way To Go" for years. I remembered the iconic imagery and the simple premise, but couldn't remember any actors but Gene Kelly. Thank you for featuring it.
Down With Love has stunning costumes. Perfect early-1960s couture, whether it's Barbara's pink suit, her brunch dress, the Beatnik party, or the gown where the wrap is a single, giant ruffle.
I love how much variety you include in your list and most of these movie I’ve seen and truly loved! The fashion definitely makes the movie better!
After she mentions Clueless: I want that wardrobe, shame I wasn't born in the '90s because Alicia Silverstone gave all the wardrobe
I LOVE The Glass Slipper!! Always thought the costumes in it were gorgeous 😍
Keep going!
I love the care that you took pronouncing the foreign names!
1- your voice :0 🖤✨
2-THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO
i just watched gone with the wind a few days ago, and i agree!! it has some of the best costumes ive ever seen on film. the scene of her walking into ashleys birthday party in that absolutely *stunning* red dress literally made my jaw drop. i think about it at least once a week.
I love that my two favorite movies, Cinderella (2015) and Emma (2020) made it to at least the honorable mentions
Costume design is such an underrated field. So many people don't realize how important the costumes can be to the overall film
I just recently watched Titanic and thought how beautiful Rose looked through out the movie and how timeless the movie looked as well. 💗🌹
Thank you for including Chinese and Korean and Indian fashion! They are so underrepresented in lists
House of Flying Daggers was *chefs kiss* beautiful. I absolutely love that movie and gawk at the costumes every single time. I love Chinese fashion from that era because it's elegant and flowy so no wonder the Chinese themselves favour that era.
Love how diverse you are, loved that you included Frida!!!!!
When I started this video, my mind went to "The Golden Flower", so I was pleasantly surprised that you included it as Honorable Mention.
Devdas is literally the movie that knocked sideways out of my "tom boy" existence. I went from hating the sight of a dress to wearing saree and lengha within a year of seeing that movie.
And the MUSIC, *swoon*
I was pleased to see My Fair Lady was included and also there was a mention of the 2020 Emma film at the end.
I found your channel just a few weeks ago and I feel so blessed bc your videos are so great, I feel in such a great mood after watching them ! And this video was really good, inspirational and educational as well, so well done !!
Thank you for acknowledging Devdas! You should also check other movies directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali! The historical costumes in his movies are a visual delight!
Charlie's Angels 2019 was really stylish for me. it represented their characters and how they wanted to portray themselves as disguises. maybe it's just my love for streetwear casual, but i always find myself rewatching the movie for ideas
I'm so glad you included Curse of the golden flower because that movie is so beautiful
You have such a great speaking voice!
