Some years ago I hurt my knee badly (a training accident): surgery, 3 months of crutches, another 3 months of physical theraphy. The woman I loved left me during that time. My life was a mess. Then I started working out again: jogging, fitness, martial arts (Krav Maga). All the time I was listening to this & the entire "Weight" CD by Henry Rollins. Now I have a wonderful gf (about to marry) & am a Krav Maga instructor. Thanks Henry Rollins for giving me strength to carry on in bad times.
This song kept me alive on several dark nights. Light Energy. Get angry in a good way. Rise up. Stand up. Walk forward. Scar tissue is stronger than muscle. Shine.
"the ones who don't do anything are always the ones who try to put you down and you could spend your entire life walking around in the nowhere land of self doubt" SO TRUE. Love Henry so much!
Henry Rollins and Steve-o are going to be major role models in me achieving my absolute sobriety. Not just being clean but doing big time things. I like the lyrics "no such thing as spare time, no such thing as free time, no such thing as down time, All you got is life time."
This album SAVED me from a long-coming, seemingly terminal tailspin in the early 90s. With Henry screaming his own relentless brand of encouragement and truth into my ear, I resolved NEVER to cop out and hurt those who cared for me by suiciding, no matter how badly I craved it. Under his direction, I chose to suffer and then shoulder my shit and at least TRY to fight back and take down as many of the f*ckers who deserved it as I could. Although physically weak from depression and social phobia, I got my shit together enough to start on weights. I got strong quickly and went on to the punchbag. Then boxing. I gave up drugs, then smoking. Drink took longer, but I eventually quit that too. I’m 50 now. I’ve led an interesting life and share what I’ve learned with my two brilliant and similarly neuro-divergent kids. It is a privilege to watch them grow and enjoy this world, a place of transcendent beauty, despite all its challenges. But I’m honestly not sure I’d have reached this place if Henry and the Rollins Band weren’t around back then to jerk me to my feet and show me the way out of the darkness. Thank you, Henry. And thank you, Rollins Band. May you follow your paths to their end, resplendent with the strength and kindness that so helped me 🙏🏻 Note: I bought Weight and I still buy it for friends, given it helped me so far beyond its asking price. All the guys deserve financial reward for the genius, sweat and pain they put into their music. That said… I am sooo glad it’s here on RUclips, because, if you’re hurting, this album can help you make your world a better place
I love Rollins' music, he sings with the knowledge and passion of someone who's been through quite a lot and it's because of that that I turn to his music when I'm feeling pretty low and need a serious pick me up.
I was so lucky to have been to one of their concerts in Milan in 1994 or 1995. This song in particular was/is my battle hymn everytime I felt weak. And I'm stunned by these comments here that show me that maybe these wise lyrics have helped more people than any shrink, preacher, or so called life coach. Thanks Henry. You're a role model to everyone of us.
I feel that Rollins is one of the best lyricists in rock and roll because he expresses so many sentiments that I try to communicate and puts them in the simplest words and terms and defines them often in the confines of a single song. It's incredible!
that shit is killin you man. it was killin me and i dropped that shit. locked myself in a motel room with a girl, she took my wallet and my keys so i coudlnt go anywhere to grab smokes. 72 hours later i was free. determination and drive and focus is what it takes after those difficult three days of hell find yourself a distraction to keep you company for 3 days in a cheap motel room for a 3 day weekend. clean that garbage out of your body and out of your mind. its enslaving you so it can kill you. then you can take all that money you save from smoking and go on a road trip every month.... travel.... expand the mind.... oh and bring that distraction with you, she deserves a vacation too
@@GojiraNeko I don't get how people can get addicted to cigs I've only ever smoked if I was really really tense and sad so maybe a handful a year, I just feel dirty after I have one so
@@finlaymcdiarmid5832 at the moment its been over 10 years since i smoked. every now and then ill try to take a drag off of a friends cig and it gags me. it completely kills my lungs and sets my throat on fire. it also makes me incredibly dizzy and slightly nauseous. [these are typical reactions ot a cigarette if you arent used to them.... the dizziness and nausea are from the nicotine] thats how i reacted to cigarettes when i started smoking when i was 13 too. and i only occasionally smoked, a full pack would last me a week and a half. if i smoked two cigarettes back to back it would make me nauseous for hours [dont ask me why i kept smoking at that point because i honestly couldnt tell you other than because i was an idiot] people get addicted to cigs because of the nicotine of course. and the more exposed to it they are, the less violent the reactions are and the stronger the addiction becomes. finally it gets to where youre smoking a cigarettes ever 30-60 minutes. typically you end up smoking a pack a day [instead of a pack every 10 days like when you start]. some people even go thru 2 packs or more a day... its insane. not everybody gets addicted to heroin, some only use it recreationally once in their lives or just once or twice a year. and they end up never getting addicted. other people try it once and the next thing you know theyre shooting up on a daily basis like 2 of my friends did. nicotine is supposedly more addictive than heroin. i wouldnt know myself because ive never tried heroin. if things get too tense or whatever for me nowadays i usually drink some coffee or a soda. a cigarette for me will not help me when im stressed anymore, it will just make me sick
I'll echo and reverberate many of the comments about this song pulling me/us out of a slump. I was about to go homeless, and doing construction site clean-up (day labor), falling and failing fast financially, drinking shit beer every night, all my co-workers were living the bushes and riding BMX bike instead of cars. Never would have expected a song or album to inspire me to fight back and take control like this album did (2015-2016) but this song, on repeat, really made a huge difference. It sounds different now, but back in those days when I nothing good happening, Shine helped me get shit back on track. Typically, music doesn't do that...but this track DID. Thanx HR!!!!!
